after the storm, people continue cleaning up and digging out, and they're dealing with frigid and icy conditions this morning. fire and ice. the added challenges philadelphia firefighters dealt with as they battled this nightclub fire. a rare look at some of president trump's tax returns. what he said about the leak of documents he himself refuses to share. right now at 11:00, the bitter cold continues to grip our region following yesterday's storm. temperatures won't climb above the freezing point, so what's on the ground will stay frozen today. and it is still a mess in parts of chestnut hill right now. >> people continue to feel the effects of yesterday's storm.

these people in north philadelphia were like many others. they needed a little push to get out of their parking spots, frozen in place. we're dealing with strong winds today as well. here's a live look outside our studios. winds will increase as the day goes on, and we could even see some snow showers later today. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. don't let whatever sun you see fool you. you won't see a lot of snow and ice melting today because of the frigid conditions outside. that heavy ice and wind knocked down trees and power lines across our area. more wind today. about 16,000 homes and businesses are still without electricity. we have live team coverage as crews work to clean up the storm damage and deal with the icy conditions and the bitter cold that's around. let's go to tim furlong live in wilmington. >> reporter: we're in the wilmington/newark line. you look at the sidewalks here.

if you come over here and look at the roads, they did a pretty good job plowing the roads out and getting the streets dry. wherever the water sat there's ice. there were lots of power outa s outages. thousands and thousands of them yesterday. a lot of that heavy ice coating sat on these power lines and that's why you had problems. this whole neighborhood is still out at this point on the wilmington/newark line. he is hanging out with a crew from chicago, from chitown that came in. where else do we have? >> d.c., philadelphia, and chicago. >> reporter: you guys had to bring in all the big guys. one guy said to me you don't see this coming. were we underp prepared in delaware? >> as a company, we're always prepared. we live in that environment as well. when you have an ice storm like

tim furlong, nbc10 news. okay, tim. >> and that is the sound of branches being crunched up into tiny pieces after the storm brought down tree lines in audubon, camden county. crews are taking down the trees on walnut street that damaged that home and property. >> matt delucia is live in rocks borroarough borough. >> reporter: it's been a tough morning for those who park on the street. even tougher if you haven't started shoveling. that's because that snow has turned into solid ice. yeah, listen to that. it is not a sound you really want to hear, those tires spinning in the snow.

we saw plenty of drivers sharing the pain, trying to get their cars out. i was in sky force 10 earlier this morning. we flew to manayunk, norristown, north philly. all seeing the same thing. occasionally neighbors jumped in to help one another. most of the major roads, they look great this morning. some drivers really didn't think it would be this rough. >> i mean, it's all ice. all you can do is keep chipping away at it. >> reporter: how long do you think this is going to take you? >> we've been out here for a half hour. >> reporter: a half hour already? >> yes. >> reporter: another live look here. just a few seconds ago, you might see a city salt truck has been spreading some salt on this roadway. you can see these cars. this is another concern we've been seeing a lot of. a reminder to all of you to get that snow and ice off your car.

we've seen a number of cars and trucks this morning on the highway with ice flying off and it is pretty dangerous. look at some of this ice. it is really tough, and that can cause a lot of damage to your vehicle or to yourself if you're walking by. nbc10 news. bitter cold throughout our area today. nbc10 first alert meteorologist krystal klei is here with the forecast. >> it's cold out there right now. it's going to stay cold as we go through the rest of today. there's very little warmup, especially when you have snow and ice on the ground that's going to keep the ground temperature very cold. right now in philadelphia we're at 24 degrees. 19 in the suburbs. notice a little flake icon. 23 in new jersey and 21 the lehigh valley. most of us should just barely make it to the upper 20s. all of us should stay below freezing, meaning that snow and ice is not going anywhere.

look closely here, but there are a few flakes falling right now. the winds are blowing around. yes, it is cold. it's a little snowy, but this is a very light snow in comparison to the ice and snow we saw yesterday. you do not have to worry about high accumulations with today's forecast, but you do have to worry about seeing more snow. we're already starting to get some scattered snow showers coming in a little advanced here. the better chance of more steady lines that might pass through, meaning a squall, a brief period of lower visibility is possible later in the afternoon. there's why. we've got strong wind gusts coming in from the northwest. so they have forced the snow to our northwest, our direction. so later today just don't be surprised if you see a few flakes falling out there. temperature today bitterly cold all day. ice, little to no melting. the sun is now being covered up by clouds, so don't expect that to assist today.

you're going to see the icy patches along some of the walkways throughout. scattered snow showers are in the forecast, even into later today. i have more on if these temperatures pick up anytime soon coming up in a minute. let's talk more about the icy roads. investigators are looking at whether the icy conditions are to blame for this crash in delaware this morning. route 1 is back open after the serious accident at creek road. one car slammed into a tow truck. two people were hurt. the superintendent says bus runs would take hours. the outer lanes of the delaware memorial bridge are closed to drivers right now. here's the problem. it's falling ice. you can see it there on the roadway. bridge and turnpike officials are warning drivers to be extremely careful out there. speaking of the roads, let's get a check on late morning conditions. >> jessica boyington has been

watching the roads. >> it's been a challenging day all morning because pretty much anything that's out there is pretty much frozen. delaware memorial bridge closed lanes in both directions. there's a lot less cars on the road this morning. you can see we're still into the green on both directions of the delaware memorial bridge. we're over on route 309 at church road. this off ramp completely blocked with an overturned vehicle. just beyond the pa turnpike and we're seeing this here. a lot of emergency vehicles on the scene with an accident just behind this pole right over here. we are watching that off ramp being blocked off. out in bear, delaware, watch for some fallen power cables. that's closed right now and blocked to traffic. there's a vehicle fire in springfield out on mermaid lane right around flourtown avenue.

watch for those things. watch for icy spots, especially on the on and off ramps as well. a nightclub is destroyed by fire in center city. sky force 10 over xo lounge. in the next hour, we'll hear about the challenges firefighters faced because of the cold and icy conditions. the red cross is helping families forced out into the cold by a fire in their apartment building. it broke out around 1:00 this morning. one man suffered minor injuries. and new video shows a man robbing a pet store in center city. police are hoping you can identify the armed robber. he forced an employee to hand over almost $250 and then he took off. no one was hurt. here's a reason to never keep the car running as you're pumping gas. watch as the white car pulls up. someone jumps out, gets in the driver's side of a car at the pumps as the owner is filling

the tank. the thief just drives away while the car owner is just standing there and can't do anything but watch. this happened in northeast philadelphia earlier this month. police ask if you have any information on the thieves, if you know them, you're asked to call the police. give the police a call. jury selection continues today in the eric frein murder trial. frein is accused of shooting two pennsylvania state troopers in an ambush in the poconos in 2014. one trooper was killed. the jury is being selected in chester county because of extensive media kocoverage in t poconos. the state senate and assembly both passed the measure that says teens have to wait until they're 18 years old to marry. well, tonight in northeast philadelphia local police officers will receive top honors for their courage. >> yes, professionals will pay

tribute to more than two dozen officers, including three that were shot in the line of duty last year. one of the have valor awards wi to jesse hartnett. he still managed to chase after the suspect who was later captured. another winner is officer dorman. he was shot seven times by an alleged drug dealer. dorman returned to duty a little more than two months after being wounded. and philadelphia police sergeant silvia young will be honored. she was shot eight times. president trump is firing back this morning after a reporter released a portion of his 2005 tax return. and interest rate concerns. all eyes will be on the fed this afternoon. how that decision today could hurt your wallet.

my tax returns? fake news. today federal judges in maryland and hawaii will hear challenges to president trump's travel ban. the new ban is supposed to take effect tomorrow. it temporarily bars refugees from coming to the u.s. and bans travel from six muslim majority countries dropping iraq from the original list. we'll find out today if the federal reserve will raise interest rates. janet yellen will announce her decision this afternoon. if you have revolvie ining debt could see your monthly payments go up within 60 days. mortgage rates would also rise. and as you stepped out the door this morning, you probably noticed how cold it was out there. the main event, that storm, has since moved well off to our northeast, but the cold air has been left behind. so we're only in the 20s right now in our philly neighborhoods. 23 for chestnut hill.

22 west mt. airy. 25, graduate hospital. 25 in bustleton. we're not going to see much more of a warmup. we're talking upper 20s. that's about it for the afternoon. on top of that it's going to feel even colder because it's windy out there and that will continue as well through the afternoon. the feels-like temperatures 10 degrees at 1:00 in the afternoon. 14, 5:00 p.m. and 15 about 8:00 p.m. some brief bursts of snow are still possible as we go through today. this more of the tail end of lake-effect that may be pushed in our direction because of those strong winds. in the suburbs we're seeing some of those flakes fall with the wind conditions. feeling like 8 degrees at 1:00

in the afternoon. 12 by 5:00. 12 by 8:00. temperatures don't even break the freezing line today, so things will stay icy and snowy today. 7 the feels-like at 1:00 in the afternoon. 12 by 5:00 p.m. mid teens by 5:00 in delaware. that's the same for jersey and the shore. right now it is pretty isolated, a bit spotty in nature, but an uptick later today is certainly possible. watch the blue arrows. this is where the winds are forcing in from. it is easy to pull in a few of those flakes to our region. right now we're seeing just a few flakes fall outside of our studios. we're already seeing just a very, very light snow. you have to focus to even see them float by, but we're already experiencing that. that will continue into the

afternoon. there's a line of snow you see around 11:00 a.m. it kind of lingers to the northern zones like mt. pocono where they picked up a couple of feet in areas yesterday. a few spots of snow trying to make it through parts of new jersey and scattering more so by 4:00 p.m. everything breaks down as we go into the evening. by 9:00, we're clearing out with some of those lingering clouds. if you wonder how long the cold sticks, it is still here for a while. 34 only for tomorrow. look at those overnights. 19 into friday morning. then just a little boost into your temperatures with a chance of rain on saturday. the first day of spring technically monday, but we'll remain below average next week. grocery store traps. we'll tell you about the mistake you might be making that's hurting your waistline.

this is called parked in by snow. sky force 10 over manayunk this morning where drivers were challenged to get out of their snowpacked spots. that snow there is packed ice. it took time and effort for a lot of people to push their way past the big obstacles and get out on the open road. these guys were rocking and rolling. you know how you do that to get your car free from the snow. they had to use some real muscle power to get that car out of there. the outer lanes of the delaware memorial bridge are closed to drivers right now. and here's the problem. it's falling ice. you can see it there on the road. bridge and turnpike officials are warning drivers to be extra careful there. new castle county has the most power outages in our area still this morning. more than 11,000 customers are without their electricity. >> tim furlong is live in wilmington with crews working to

>> we appreciate that guy from chicago. downed trees and power lines are also being cleaned up in south jersey. >> our live team coverage continues there with pamela osborne. >> reporter: daylight here on walnut street now that they're taking down this tree. you can get a better sense of what the damage was to that house, but that's not all. this other tree came down across the street taking out parts of this fence. the cleanup really just beginning. residents of this audubon neighborhood woke up to the sound of clean up. ice covered branches are everywhere you look, a reminder of tuesday's storm and the damage it caused. still fresh on the minds of drivers like linda adams. >> it's pretty to look at, but you don't want to park underneath them because you don't know what's going do happen with the branches falling. >> reporter: county officials say during the height of the storm they received more than double the number of fire calls they typically get in one day.

>> it's mostly very light snow that is falling. in wilmington not seeing anything pass through, but it is now cloudy. although we started clear this morning. that's been turning over very quickly. jersey and now the shore starting to see the cloud coverage spread as well. this is somewhere seeing some snow though. i'm sure the folks out at cam camelback mountain and the poconos are happy about this. you can tell from looking at the darker zones those flakes are falling at a nice pace, but nothing too heavy outside today. we're talking limited accumulation for areas north and just some spotty snow showers that pass for areas farther south. it's very cold out there. anything that is icy or snowy is going to stay that way today. in fact, tonight expecting another hard freeze. continue to take it slow as you walk or drive outside. feels-like temperatures, it is feeling like 11 right now in philadelphia and 8 for pottstown.t. pocono.

>> reporter: for philadelphia firefighters at a burning building on south street this morning it was challenge after challenge. the snowpacked sidewalks, icy streets, and frigid conditions made it that much harder to get a grip on the flames. >> knocking down windows and walls. >> reporter: that's just some of what laura saw firefighters do outside the burning xo lounge on south street. it was a little before 6:00 a.m. when her client at the freehouse fitness studio said look outside. >> we called 911, but they said somebody was already on the way. within seconds, we saw fire trucks, but it was one of the biggest flames i've ever seen. it was very scary. >> reporter: firefighters say the first engine on scene got here as quickly as it did only because it's temporarily assigned to a fire station that sits only a block away. the worst of the fire was coming from the club's rear porch, and even after it was out, stubborn hot spots remained underneath that wooden structure.

next door world communications charter school closed because the smell of smoke was too powerful for kids and teachers. firefighters say the business below xo lounge and immediately next door are losses too. reporting from center city, katy zachry. happening now, the justice department is unveiling charters related to the two separate hacking incidents at yahoo that exposed data from millions of users. here's what we know. the four defendants include two russian security officers. one person is in custody in canada. the hacks have tarnished yahoo's reputation and prompted verizon to cut the price of its takeover deal by $350 million. talk about a scare in the sky. a woman on an overseas flight suffered burns to her face and hands as her headphones exploded in air. the headphones sparked and caught on fire two hours into

millville. up to 35 in dover. so across the board currently gusts about 30. as we go through the afternoon, wind speeds will be around 15 to 25 miles per hour, maybe a little higher in dover, but look at the gusts. 40 to 45 miles per hour and that is enough of a push to continue forcing in a few scattered snow showers into the later parts of today as well. it's cold enough to support just snow as well as keep any snow and ice on the ground sticking. it is not going to be melting off today. in our new jersey neighborhoods, pittman, 24 degrees. piles grove, 24. lumberton, 25. hope well township only 23 degrees. because of those gusts, it feels more like 10 to 15 as we go through the day. here's radar and satellite view that we are looking at right now. so we've got these scattered snow showers trying to pass on

through. where you see white, that is super light snow. a few flakes that are floating on by. we're not looking at major accumulations today. less than 1 inch at best. later in the afternoon a few lines of steadier snow that drop visibility a tad, but they'll be moving by so quickly they're not a major concern. a few spots of snow showers that are passing near parts of new jersey at 1:30. 4:00 p.m. a little more scattered through parts of pennsylvania and jersey as well. delaware gets clipped here a few times, and really most of this moves on out as we go into the evening past sunset. so by 9:30 just some clouds that are lingering over our area. future feels-likes though. feeling like 7 in doylestown. 10 in philly. right now as we go through the afternoon feeling at best around 15 in philly. 16 wilmington. about the same across the shore all the way up to allentown.

look as we go into 8:30 at night. not much of a change here. still feeling very cold outside in the teens. as we go overnight into tomorrow morning, another hard freeze by 7:00 a.m. feeling like single digits from trenton to west chester, voorhees at 9 degrees for the feels-like temperature. as for your weekend high temperatures, just a slight boost in temperatures to upper 30s for the suburbs and 40 for philly on friday. notice the mix of clouds and sun. saturday some showers in the form of rain for areas like philly and south jersey. a snow-rain mix for areas in the suburbs and the lehigh valley. maybe some low 50s along the shore points and delaware beaches. by sunday, about the same. mid 40s for areas like the shore and delaware. 42 for philly. we are drying out, but still

mostly cloudy on sunday. these temperatures still well below average. in philly we should be in the low 50s for this time of year. 29 the high today. 34 on thursday. there's the 40 i just pointed out. we stay in the low to mid 40s for the weekend with the chance of rain on saturday. the first official day of spring it's technically on monday. doesn't quite feel like it. we'll stay below average with lows right around freezing. we'll be right back.
