first up tonight, all new at 6:00, an nbc 10 exclusive. atlantic city police officer shot in the head six months ago tells us how he's beating the odds in his first ever interview. >> it's possible, no matter how low you get in life, you can bounce back from it. >> good evening i'm jim rosenfield. officer josh vadell has been making recovery since he was shot. now a funding cut has he and his family scared that money they've been relying on could be slashed. nbc 10 jersey shore reporter ted greenberg spoke exclusively to officer vadell who wants everybody to see what he's going through. >> reporter: he keeps making strides. on this day at the moss rehab brain injury center in wood bury. physical therapy to strengthen his left leg.

>> it's tough. >> every day is a miracle. >> reporter: the 29-year-old atlantic city police officer has beaten the odds since september 3rd. >> i remember everything. >> reporter: the date he was shot in the head when he and his partner interrupted a robbery outside a casino parking garage. >> not angry, it's the job i sign up for. i knew it was a possibility. >> reporter: but it left the husband and father of three without part of his skull. an injury he's publicly revealing for the first time. >> i want them to see the sacrifice that was involved. >> reporter: this week, a new potential struggle for vadell and his wife, laura who has been unable to work since the shooting. a state ordered cut in salary for officers and worker's compensation pay. money his family has relied on since he was wounded in the line of duty. >> kind of makes me feel like i did something wrong. and it just -- it upsets me. >> i'm sad right now and scared.

>> reporter: i'm told it's hard to predict how long vadell will continue to need therapy here. those helping him in his recovery say compare today many with traumatic brain injuries, he's definitely ahead of the game. >> i love working with him because i know he wants to get better. >> reporter: vadell faces surgery soon to replace the missing part of his skull with synthetic bone. but he's not worried. >> i've never given up and i won't give up. >> reporter: a determination to stay positive while continuing to push the limits. ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. as ted mentioned the state of new jersey is making a change to the contracts of atlantic city police officers. that includes salary and benefit cuts. today, the state told nbc 10 these changes will save about $20 million to help deal with ac's budget problems. well, for those of you in the lehigh valley it was day three of digging out from more than a foot of snow. there are big piles everywhere making it hard to find a parking

spot. it's dangerous for kids to walk around. that's why school was canceled again today in bethlehem and allentown. drivers say driving in ice, it's no fun. >> you can't reverse because it's all ice. you start sliding forward. >> and schools in allentown will be closed again tomorrow for the fourth straight day. the digout continues today in southwest philadelphia. we found this guy working hard to try to free his van. city tells nbc 10 it will have more than 70 trucks working through the night to plow and salt residential streets they haven't gotten to yet. it's still windy out there as we look live at the wind turbines. conditions really cold out there leading to another refreeze of the snow and ice that's already on the ground. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us with his most accurate first alert forecast. the cold is going to stick around for a bit? >> we get above freezing during the day and things melt. then it refreezes at night.

this is going to keep happening. but we're also going to add some snow to this over the weekend. as you'll see. not tonight, though. look at that. a clear sky finally. 38 degrees in philadelphia now. 34 in coatesville. 39 in allentown. and vineland. and dover. those temperatures way below average. the average high is 53. today's official high, 39. even though that's above the last two days, that's still way below normal. even the jumps we'll be seeing tomorrow is going to be way below normal. ten degrees below normal tomorrow. and it will seem milder. we're still getting pretty good winds, sustained at 24 in wilmington. starting to diminish a little bit else where. and that's going to knock the feels like temperature, prevent it from going down into the single digits like it did in many areas this morning. temperatures still going down into the low 20s. everything is going to be frozen

solid tomorrow morning. so it's best to get rid of whatever is slushy right now. i'll come back with more snow in the weekend forecast coming up. all right. glenn. tonight donald trump is not backing down from accusations that president barack obama wire tapped him before the election. comes the same day the senate intelligence committee said they have no evidence that it happened. as you'll remember president trump's accusations came in the form of a tweet earlier. sean spicer explained why the president is sticking to the accusations. >> no. he stands by it, again you're mischaracterizing what happened today. the senate -- no i know. no. >> from their -- >> i saunderstand that. they acknowledge they have not been in contact with the department of justice. >> what isn't clear right now is exactly what happens next. as the white house continues to claim president trump's accusations are true.

the president says he's making america first with the budget he unveiled today. the $1.1 trillion plan slashes spending while pumping billions of extra dollars into protecting the country. the budget gives $54 millibilli defense. $1.5 billion is slated for building the wall. this budget brings dramatic cuts. the environmental protection agency, state department and t altricalture department. the arts, would lose a big chunk of their funding. philadelphia's mayor react today the proposed cuts. this budget would be devastating to every single fiphiladelphiae. the mayor says small business and affordable housing programs would be hit hard. tonight, there's been another set back for president trump's revised travel ban.

a federal judge in maryland blocked the executive order today. a court in hawaii did the same thing last night. the president signed the revised ban last week and was set to go into effect today. it targets six predominately muslim countries. the immigration debate was center stagei in delaware. hours after the president's travel ban was blocked. the group released an opening letter to the governor asking he shield immigrations from deportation efforts. today, the general assembly approved a measure that would make it a requirement to appear on the ballot in new jersey, it's a response to the fact that president trump has refused to release his own tax returns. the bill heads to the governor's desk. police in montgomery county want to reunite millions of dollars worth of stolen jewelry

with their owners. the gems came from homes that were broken into in pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware. dating back to 2013. police say they arrested the guys who stole the jewelry, now they want to find the rightful owners. >> we're talking about, you know, new jersey, we're talking about delaware. you know, there's connections to all of these places so far. if you were the victim of a burglary, get to the website. >> and we have a link to photos of the jewelry on our website. nbc 10.com. a philadelphia school district rolling out a ad campaign as it looks to hire a thousand teachers. it spent $160,000 for the campaign. the ads will run for 12 weeks. some will be on the radio and on bill boards. philadelphia's mayor is meeting with the prek community tonight. he's taking part in a round table discussion with teachers

and parents. philadelphia's controversial soda tax is helping fund the prek program. the race for district attorney in philadelphia saw most of the candidates face off today. these are seven of the eight people competing to replace seth williams. the business association of west park side hosted this morning's candidates' forum. the primary election is may 16th. seth williams announced last month he wouldn't seek another term as da. the fbi is looking into $160,000 worth of gifts williams received and did not report. williams said the scrutiny on him has become a distraction. if you've ever wanted to work at wawa, here's your chance. they are hiring 5,000 new employees this spring. some stores will hold open house events for people interested to learn what a job at wawa looks like. the road to repeat for villanova starts in less than an hour from now. nova alum, keith jones in buffalo where all the action is

song. a couple hundred fans made the drive or flew in. students hit the streets to try buffalo signature wings. the question i had was are they better than philly's signature sandwich? very important question, buffalo wings or philly cheese steak? >> keith, that's a tough choice. i'm thinking. >> reporter: buffalo wings in buffalo or a philly cheese take in philly? >> philly cheese steak in philly. i'm from south jersey which means i'm basically from philadelphia. cheese steak all the way. >> buffalo wings as like a snack, but philly cheese steak for an actual meal. >> the wings i had was phenomenal. i'm going to go with the wings. >> reporter: i'll give to the city of good neighbors, the wings are to die for but they have nothing on philly's cheese

thanks, keith. we cut him off but we know he'll be with the cats all the way. catch his live recap of tonight's game coming up on nbc 10 news at 11:00. now back to our first alert weather and tractor trailers, look at this video, they're losing ice along the highway. nbc 10 caught ice flying off the trucks in lehigh county today. ice falling from high rises in center city. we've been telling you about the dangerous frr the laor the lastf days, this ice is falling off the building earlier in the week. let's take a live look. this cold continues and then we're looking at possible snow this weekend in some parts of our area? >> well below freezing tonight. anything melted today is going to refreeze and melt again tomorrow and refreeze again tomorrow night. it's 38 degrees now. still windy, so it feels cold, even though it's not quite as

cold as yesterday in the 30s across the entire area right now. and the temperatures and the wind combined make us feel like it's in the 20s. 23 in coatesville. 29 in mount holly. 28 in philadelphia. the wind gusts, maybe not quite as high as they were a couple hours ago. but still 32 miles an hour, wilmington, 30 miles an hour in millville. they'll be gradually coming down as we go through the night. we don't see anything on radar too close by. a few lake effect snow flurries. this is the system that will be racing down and providing that chance of some snow over the weekend. let me show you what we're talking about. here's thursday night. no problem. friday morning. cold. that's the problem. look how cold reading is. and then friday afternoon, still, fair amount of sunshine. then, look what happens saturday. here's that area of snow moving

in as you recall. the darker blues indicate the heavier snow. this is not just all light snow or flurries. the one advantage we have is it's the temperatures are border line and a lot of the snow may melt. especially in the philadelphia area. but that's hour after hour of snow in the lehigh valley, berks county, upper bucks, upper montgomery. and some accumulation. here's saturday night. the snow line starts coming down towards philadelphia. you notice the temperature, boarder line, right around freezing. this is another model for sunday morning showing a wintry mix from philly almost all the way down to the shore. so by the time we're done with this over the weekend, the computer models are showing generally one to perhaps three inches of snow, the most snow in the areas that got the most with the last storm.

and maybe an inch or so in the philadelphia area. as if we need it. here is saturday. more rain in philadelphia saturday and a little bit more snow early sunday morning. there's the snow lehigh valley, most of that on saturday. the rain at the shore and in delaware. we'll update you on this at 11:00. i'm john clark we'll hear from villanova getting ready for the ncaa tournament. a formal philly athlete is offering you free philly cheese steaks, that is next. ♪

60-58. nick folds back with the eagles. he spoke for the first time today since rejoining the birds. it didn't work out for nick as a starter with the rams. he is blessed to be back with the eagles. he's ready to do what he can to help carson. i asked what advitce he would give carson about the pressures of playing in philly. he says embrace it. >> being a part of that on game day, and you know, crazy enough you miss the booze from time to time. it's the only place you get something like that. it's a special atmosphere. >> nice flyers after beating the penguins, they're at the devils who have lost ten straight. nerlens noel, back in philly with the mavs. he's going to play the sixers for the first time tomorrow night. he says it will be special. >> man i think it's going to be

chilly beach day down the shore. nbc 10 along on the beach in atlantic county today. still it's a beautiful shot right there. how about ski conditions at camel back mountain? pretty perfect after all that snow this week. you're looking there live right now more fun to come for them this weekend. they're going to get more snow. maybe several inches in the poconos. lehigh valley, berks county, other northern suburbs not too thrilled probably but getting more snow this weekend. the temperatures are still chilly. but look to next saturday. could actually get back to 60.
