nervous. but the wildcats get off to a shaky start. >> nbc 10 news starts right now. the pictures say it all tonight. from pennsylvania to new jersey and delaware, windshields cracked and busted by flying ice. tonight, more and more drivers are coming forward to talk about these terrifying moments behind the wheel. nbc 10's drew smith is joining us live along the pennsylvania turnpi turnpike, in king of prush ssia. >> reporter: one couple was here on the turnpike today, when one of these came flying at them without warning. this windshield needs replacing tonight, after this ice chunk came to a stop halfway through. if it continued, it would have slammed into cheryl ye at highway speed. ye and her boyfriend said it

came flying off of a tractor-trailer. the truck kept on driving, even as they wailed on the horn. it was a similar story in delaware with mark riggins. we spoke to him on the phone tonight. >> just scared. in the moment, you don't know what to do. i didn't want to swerve. >> reporter: over on the garden state parkway, near the jersey shore, another impact. >> i had no idea what to do, where to go. i put my hazards on and tried to get over. >> reporter: fortunately, there were no serious injuries in these incidents. but it is a widespread problem. our cameras captured it over and over again. >> people dropping the ice missiles, so to speak. >> reporter: it's not just trucks. workers in philly are trying to get the icicles off high-rises. this storm set us up for days of the ice issue. >> an extra ten minutes of warming up your car and removing that snow and ice could be life-saving. >> reporter: aaa tells us they had record call volume

yesterday. a busy day again today. and this snow melting out on to the parking lot, has melted a little, but refreezed. that's going to create a problem again tonight, and in the morning. live at king of prussia. >> let's check in with glenn schwartz. these cold nights not helping to get rid of the snow and ice. >> if it was cold all through the day and at night, everything would stay the way it is. but seeing melting during the day and refreezing at night. you saw with drew, that's happening on your driveways and sidewalks and steps. so, the biggest danger might be just getting to your car in the morning. it's down to 33 in philadelphia. 30 in coatesville. some areas are below sfrefreezi now. others are not. they're all going to be below freezing by day break. it's been exceptionally cold the last three days. the average high is 53 for this time of year. even though it's not as cold the

next few days. that's still way below normal. the wind has diminished. now, only about 10 miles per hour for the sustained wind. you won't have too much of an issue with the wind tomorrow. it will be in the 20s, even in philadelphia. some teens in the suburbs. with the snow cover. we got a cold start to the day. it's a nice, sunny day again. but we're also predicting some snow over the weekend, for a good bit of the area. i'll break that down, neighborhood by neighborhood, coming up. >> okay, glenn. we have breaking news tonight, out of raleigh, north carolina. look at this massive fire there. broke out at a five-story apartment buildling in downtown raleigh. look at the flames that can be seen from miles away. nearby buildings and residents are being evacuated. we'll bring you updates as we get them. back here at home, a chaotic scene at a septa station in

center city today. the cell phone video shows a group of more than a dozen teens attacking a handful of students from the philadelphia performing arts charter school. it happened at the septa station at broad and vine. we spoke to a parent of one of the victims. it started when some of the teens stopped others from throwing ice. >> i was shaking, disgusted, heartbroken. i couldn't even breathe, to be honest with you. i just -- the whole world stopped turning. >> the boy's mother said her son walked away with bumps and bruises. but he is okay. another woman said her son had to be checked out at the hospital for his injuries. septa police is investigating. > [ cheers ] it ended with cheers. but tonight's game between villanova and mount st. mary's got off to a rocky start.

nbc 10 caught some nervous faces on camera. took the wildcats more than six minutes to score their first bucket. keith jones followed all of the ups and downs from buffalo tonight. >> reporter: you can call them the cardiac cats. while they won by 20 points, they were down for most of it. it's an unknown shuffle for villanova fans. >> they're scary. >> they scared me in the beginning. >> oh, my god. first half, did they have to do that to me? >> reporter: audrey drove up, and was among scores worried the wildcats wouldn't score. the fans bought the merch and kept their heads high. >> i'm hoping they can get to new york. that's my wish. one game at a time. that's the way they play. >> reporter: it was a nail-biter for the first half. the wildcats play on saturday in the round of 32, against the two teams playing right now, wisconsin and virginia tech.

reporting in buffalo, keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> keith will be with the wildcats every step of the way, as they head out on the road to repeat. catch his live reports from buffalo, right here on nbc 10 news. president trump is standing by his claim that former president barack obama spied on him in the 2016 election. you will recall that president trump's accusation came in the form of a tweet on march 4th. now, the top democrat and republican on the senate intelligence committee, says there's no surveillance or wiretapping on then. presidential candidate trump. the president isn't backing down. >> he stands by it. but you're mischaracterizing what happened today. the investigation, the house and the senate, has not been provided all of the information. >> fbi director james comey could be asked about the wiretapping claim in a rare public hearing in washington. prump unveiled the blueprint

for his budget today. the plan slashes spending, while pumping billions of extra dollars into protecting the country. let's start with the winners. under the proposed plans, the department of defense would see a 10% increase. $54 billion. homeland security would get a 7% bump. and veterans affairs, 6%. the biggest loser, the environmental protection agency. mr. trump's plan calls for a 31% there. the state department, u.s. aid and international programs get cut by 28%. the labor department, 21%. 19 programs are being eliminated. and 17 agencies are on the cut list. it's too early to tell what impact this will have on our region, jim kenney weighed in this afternoon. >> certainly, what he's proposed is devastating in many areas of housing and transportation and just every aspect of urban life. but we do have a u.s. congress.

and they have constituents. they're going to be affected as badly as we are. >> the mayor went on to say he hopes cooler heads prevail to get a budget passed that the fair for everyone. a fire that may have been caused by an exploding hoverboard has claimed the life of a second child in harrisburg tonight. 10-year-old savannah dominick died from complications related to severe burns. ashanti hughes died in that fire. investigators believe a hoverboard exploded when it was recharging. new video, tonight, of philadelphia's own meek mill, after an alleged altercation with an airport employee in st. louis. the employee wanted a photo with the rapper but wouldn't get one. some sort of fight followed. and two were charged with assault. mill is on probation. and this latest charge could be a violation.

could any of this jewelry be yours? police in montgomery county are trying to find the owners of more than a million dollars worth of stolen jewelry. the gems were stolen from pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, dating back to 2013. the die guys responsible have b arrested. we have a link on our website. an atlantic city police officer, in the fight of his life. he's giving us a behind-the-scenes look at his road of recovery. you may find some of the images disturbing. but nbc 10 was right there with officer josh, at a brain rehab center? woodbury today. the shoots left the husband and father of three without part of his skull. now, state-ordered cuts threaten to undermine his recovery. >> kind of makes me feel like i did something wrong. and it just -- it upsets me.

>> he will have surgery soon to replace the missing part of his skull with synthetic bone. the philadelphia association of black journalists is mourning one of its founders tonight. claude lewis tie edied this mor at his home in cherry hill. he worked in print and broadcast media, including nbc. he caught at villanova university. claude lewis was 82 years old. too close for comfort. the explosive situation that almost took out this camera crew. also, on the mend. teamwork saved this sick toddler during the winter storm. now, we're getting our first look at his recovery. amazing experience. i wouldn't work anywhere else. >> making the sell. philadelphia says it needs 1,000 new teachers. why some are worried the city will push the top talent away. next at 11:00.

wow. this is what a volcanoic eruption looks like up close. two bbc journalists were among a dozen people hurt when italy's mt. etna erupted today. a big cloud of steam, as people were running away. scientists say hot lava collided with thick snow that triggered that blast right there. and look closely at this video. you can see a woman barely escaping with her life, after she was caught in a mudslide in peru. there she is, in the center of your screen, covered in mud. the woman crawls and stumbles over that debris. bystanders took her to a nearby hospital. there she is. she is bruised but expected to be okay. here at home tonight, teachers wanted. the philadelphia school district, looking to hire 1,000 new teachers. but as nbc 10 shows us, some think this could be a tough

sell. >> reporter: the philadelphia school district is starting its campaign earlier to recruit 1,000 new teachers. >> looking at early literacy. and the specialty areas. those areas like special education, art, music. >> reporter: elementary and middle schools are a main focus. but this year, so is hiring more teachers of color. the philadelphia federation of teachers says five years without raises and stalled contract negotiations have current teachers feeling underappreciated and disrespected. and will make it a harder sell to potential candidates. >> the cost of living is going up. i haven't seen increase in salary. that gets hard. basic life gets hard. >> reporter: dr. william height said he wants a deal. increases offered by the district were rejected by the union, as they remain hundreds of millions of dollars apart. still, as in the past, the contract dispute has not deterred people from applying. >> with almost 1,100 teachers we

hired, we didn't see that as a factor, nor was it mentioned a factor. the longer this goes on, the harder it will be to retain good teachers. >> reporter: around 90% of teachers choose to stay. that includes the teacher of the month, who after 13 years, knows what it takes to be successful. >> you have to love the kids. you have to love your city. and you have to see the big picture. philadelphia's mayor, talking early education tonight. jim kenney took part in a round table discussion in north philadelphia. the soda tax is helping fund the pre-k program and serves 2,000 children. kevin hart is one of the hottest celebrities in hollywood. and today, the philadelphia native is being recognized with his ties for the city. the city council approved a resolution that provides july

6th as kevin hart day. councilman david oh calls him an ambassador for philadelphia. a toddler got a police escort to the hospital during the height of the snowstorm. this is benji, as he recovers from his surgery. state police, penn d.o.t., got him to the hospital in danville because of a heart condition. tonight, we're told bentley is doing okay. to our first alert weather. we could see more snow this weekend? >> absolutely nothing like the storm we saw earlier in the week. it's kind of a nuance type f vent that we're talking about. the traffic is moving fine on i-95 and south philly. and through most of the weekend, it should be moving just fine, too. may not be able to see as well a lot of the snow that would fall

would be melting in philadelphia. it's 33 degrees now. above freezing. 33 in allentown. and 30 in potstown, reading and lancaster. everybody will be going down in the 20s. doesn't feel as cold, as it did earlier, and it did yesterday or the day before because the wind certainly has diminished. and the temperatures not as low. we don't see any snow nearby. this is the next weather system that's racing towards chicago. and is going to be affecting us over the weekend. it comes at us in pieces. you can see, first of all, we go through friday, temperatures go through the 30s. and into the 40s. wow. it's been a while since we've been in the 40s. that will almost feel balmy. tomorrow night, we start off dry. after midnight, the first piece comes over. a little light snow to the north and west. probably a little rain mixed with snow in philadelphia. during the day saturday, still,

some patchy snow. that may change to rain, even up in the lehigh valley for a period of time. and to philadelphia and points south, with temperatures in the 40s again. watch what happens saturday night, the colder air starts coming down and the snow line starts coming down to philadelphia. and we could see some snow saturday night. and that, mostly, would melt, as well. there's a different computer model for saturday night, showing that snow, mixed precipitation and the rain. and here we go. into sunday morning. it would be cold enough for snow, in and around the city, and points south. and maybe cold enough to stick, at least on grassy surfaces. and then, it gradually improves, as we get into sunday afternoon. how much snow? the latest computer model just in. it's showing around an inch by saturday night. for the first round. and by the time it's all done,
