the music world mourns the loss of one of its icons. a neighborhood neglected. a water main break shuts down this street for weeks. hear from city officials about what led to it all. >> nbc 10 news starts now. good evening. this is nbc 10 news at 11:00. i'm denise nakano. heartbreak on the main line for the villanova wild cats. the team is back on campus after a stunning loss in the second round of the ncaa tournament. their road to a repeat is over after a nailbiter against wisconsin. keith jones is live in buffalo tonight. the wildcats were the number one seed with hopes of winning back-to-back titles. this has got to be rough. >> when you put it that way, it is definitely rough. the wildcats officially left the city of good neighbors for the city of brotherly love because they are going to need it.

a lot of the fans that traveled from the delaware valley, they'll have to sleep on this upset tonight. taking in sights like buffalo city hall shaped like a birthday cake. the icing at niagara falls. water flowing southbound. local nova fans were sprinkled across western new york. but came together to dance until the music suddenly stopped. >> i want to know a few days from now, we'll say what a great season, but it hurts a little bit tonight. >> tom kelly has been to nearly every villanova game the past three years. now he's dreading the drive home. >> we drove up from new jersey. heading back. about a 5 1/2-hour ride. >> steve murphy graduated in 1985, the first time nova won the title. >> we're feeling all the pain but i feel most -- i feel hardest for our kids, for our team and the coaching staff and the managers and everybody affiliated with the team. it's toughest on them.

>> he's flying back to jersey tomorrow but heads were held high despite adversity. >> we were surrounded by a lot of wisconsin fans. that was tougher because they were going crazy and we were kind of sitting there. >> reporter: jane is a sophomore in high school considering villanova, the school her parents went to. the grace the wildcats showed losing resonated. >> i love it. i love the atmosphere. my cousins go there and it's an amazing school. >> i happen to agree with that statement being a 2007 graduate of villanova university. really proud, obviously, of the way the nova nation turned out and proud of our guys for being number one in the country for a great regular season. mark and i will be traveling tomorrow morning just like all of these fans after the second time here in buffalo, the wildcats ousted in the second round. for now, live in buffalo, keith

jones, nbc 10 news. >> the energy is still there. villanova students are still shocked after the second round upset. csn's john clark was on campus talking to the students just minutes after the loss. >> does not get the shot off in time and wisconsin has won. >> they were stunned and silent. you could see the emotion on their faces. >> i want to cry. >> this is devastating. i can't believe we didn't win. i'm devastated. >> i'm shocked. all of us really had villanova going all the way. >> during the game it was tense. students were biting their nails, praying and gave away some mini basketballs. some students used them as stress balls. >> i saw them win last year. it was the best thing that ever happened, like ever. and we really thought we were going to repeat.

live on. >> i want you to take a look at this rip chuck berry hash tag on twitter. as you said, those condolences are pouring in. even if you don't know his music, chances are the music that you do love was influenced by him. chuck berry's life and influence can be summed up in three words. rock and roll. >> he's a legacy. a legacy to music, to rock 'n' roll. a legacy to the blues and just to guitar in itself. >> reporter: the pioneering guitarist first began making a name for himself in the 1950s. his showmanship on stage from his stance to posturing coupled with compelling lyrics set him apart. johnny b. good, sweet 16 and rollover beiethoven are two of his big hits. >> at the right time when it was spilling over into the

mainstream. >> reporter: despite not putting out new music for nearly four decades, new generations continue to be directly and indirectly influenced by the artist. that includes guitarist sam risen who was first introduced to berry's music at a concert. >> pretty old at the time but he was still doing the duck walk and everything. it was pretty inspiring. >> reporter: berry continued performing well into his 80s. it's hard to find awards he did not receive. >> we lost so many great musicians. more contemporaries and yet he's sort of their father. >> reporter: in death his songs will play on. chuck berry was 90 years old. >> last october, berry announced plans to release an album this year. it would have been his first album in 38 years. no word yet on if any of those songs will be released. reporting live in center city, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10

news. tonight, people are frustrated and the city is apologizing. it's been a month since a water main broke on east houston street. while the main has been fixed, the street is still closed. another issue that came this week, the snow and the ice. now after pressure from neighbors, the water department says houston street will be fixed by next week, if the weather cooperates. in a statement the water department says we apologize for the lack of communication and follow-up with the neighbors on this block as this does not meet the level of service we strive to provide our customers. time for the nbc 10 first alert neighborhood forecast. meteorologist erica marten is here with your most accurate forecast. >> we have temperatures in the 30s right now. and that fog that we did see earlier mixing out and that's because we're seeing moderate wind speeds at 15 miles per hour. with those increasing wind

speeds, that does mean any fog we were seeing will certainly mix out. satellite and radar image picking up on some returns. some greens lowering lower chester county area and newcastle county. for the most part, conditions are going to remain mainly dry. i'm going to time out your out the door forecast for the next couple of hours and notice at 6:00 a.m., we are seeing mostly cloudy skies for philadelphia. temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. p.a. suburbs seeing possibly a flurry or two around 2:00 a.m. lehigh valley also seeing mostly cloudy skies. maybe a passing flurry, but i do think that for the most part, there is a low pressure system that's going to push offshore and a lot of that moisture will be gone with it. i'll explain that in detail coming up in just a bit. >> erika, thank you. new details on the man shot and killed at an airport in paris after attacking a soldier. what we're learning about the deadly hostage situation.
