>> "nbc10 news at 5:00" begins with a scheduled slow down at one of the most heavily traveled spots in our region. skyforce10 is live over the mid-town exchange. they're closed here and they will be for a while. that means drivers who are used to zipping through those toll plaza lanes. that toll plaza connects the p.a. turnpike and the northeast extension and the blue route. the ez-pass express lanes are shut down because of a construction project. >> how traffic looking right now? >> reporter: it looks like a typical evening rush. we can tell you that those northbound lanes are shut down, the southbound lanes just for a little while longer are operating. this construction project is going to last until april 10th bringing those ez-pass users going from 55-mile-per-hour stopping to 5-mile-per-hour when they have to go through the

tolls. >> i definitely feel the people use that a lot more than they use the toll lanes, but it is what it is. you can't do anything about it. >> reporter: drivers like this knew about the three week closures. >> this is going to become a disaster out here. >> reporter: he had no idea. >> i would assume the same thing's going to happen with the turnpike commission. >> reporter: a spokesman tells nbc10 news the toll plazas will be open and ready to accommodate more cars coming and going on to the blue ruft to and from the turnpike. the entire ez-pass system is not being taken down just those high speed lanes. >> because then they'll be more cars going into the slower part and it won't be as fast and traffic backups. >> reporter: and while there are some delays possible, the system repairs are unvoidable. >> if they have to do, they have to do it. >> reporter: and while drivers say they can deal with the

traffic. >> the ez-pass lanes are still open, it will save me some time better than paying manually. >> reporter: now if you get caught in one of those money only lanes. don't worry. the turnpike commission says that now turnpike toll takers can take credit cards but they're saying that these upgrades are necessary and will last until april 10th. reporting live in plea muj meeting. >> our coverage continues with mitch blacher. >> how does it look there from the sky? >> reporter: i want to take you down back to the toll plaza. you can see it's flowing pretty well. the best way to go at this point looks to be those left hand toll lanes, those seem to be flowing the best. if you get over to the right lane that seems to slow down a little bit more than anything. as we go down 476 northbound, you can see pretty normal rush at this point.

slow down looks like it starts about a half mile back, but flowing pretty well at this point, guys. >> all right. thanks for keeping an eye on it, mitch. >> i want to hit some breaking news now. this is in overland park kansas. huge flames here. this complex we are told under construction. we don't have any word on any injuries but lot of firefighters at work right here. flames throughout that area. similar to what we saw in raleigh last week where that apartment complex was under construction. looks like some of those flames have jumped the road there to homes that are nearby. a lost smoke in the air. this is overland park, kansas. start apparently at the apartment complex under construction across the street and now you see this home with flames shooting out of the roof there. so this is an ongoing breaking story that we are continuing to follow. if we get any more information, we'll update you with that. to this now about a million dollars in jewelry stolen from a

store in lawn crest overnight. skyforce10 flew over that store. looks like someone cut a hole right through the roof and police believe that's how the burglars got inside. we're checking with police to see, if any, surveillance video exists from inside that store. >> as part of our counterintelligence mission is investigating the russian's governments efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. >> a first from the head of the fbi today. he publicly confirmed his agency is looking into whether the trump campaign conspired with russia to interfere with the election. >> lauren mayk is joining us live from washington. this was no order day on capitol hill, was it? >> reporter: things are winding down now but if you saw me at 4:00 you know the hallway was busy. this whole place was a very busy place today. i was able to get a spot inside that hearing room, though where

there was a lot of anticipation today and it didn't take long for the committee members and voters at home to get new information that now raises new questions. all eyes again on fbi director james comey. lawmakers in this packed hearing room didn't even get to their questions before comey made news confirming an investigation into russian efforts to interfere with the u.s. election and spesifying. >> and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the trump campaign and the russian government. >> reporter: it was just hours after the president tweeted that, quote, the democrats made up and pushed the russian story as an skus for running a terrible campaign. but it was the president's recent tweets on wiretapping claims that got attention here with director comey saying. >> i have no information that sports those tweets. >> reporter: because of concerns about classified info, director comey and national security agency director mike rodgers often told committee members

they couldn't answer specific questions. >> i know that is extremely frustrating to some folks but it is the way it has to be. >> reporter: new jersey congressman frank low beon doe did get specifics from this question. >> if you can describe the elements of the russia's active measures in the campaign in the 2016 election. >> reporter: the answer from the nsa director. >> we saw cyber used. we saw the use of external media. we saw the use of disinformation. we saw the use of leaking of information much of which was not altered. >> reporter: public discussions are part of fighting it in the future, the nsa director said and director comey was clear. >> we have to assume they're coming back. >> reporter: and congressman lobiondo from new jersey also asked whether there would be updates for the committee now the fbi director did not commit to that today inside the hearing, but he also said that he didn't know how long this investigation would take. coming up at 6:00 we're going to have reaction from a local

now. we're looking at 2k5i degrees and winds generally out of the west. we're going to drop into the 40s by 11:00. clouds will thicken and we'll see those winds turn to the northwest. this is like a brief little thing, little passage of a front and we are basically going to rebound very nicely for tomorrow. temperatures, this is the change from yesterday in philadelphia we're 2 degrees warmer at this hour than yesterday. atlantic city, you're 6 degrees warmer and right now around the area is 45 in coatesville, vineland at 55. nonetheless a very pleasant day out there. now this is the trend. we didn't see a lot of melting over the weekend of that icy snow but we're starting to see it now.

42 on tuesday. we may even kiss a few 60s across the area and then things take a tumble, a nasty tumble. there it is. 39 by wednesday. we'll talk more about that with the big weather when i come back in a few minutes. >> all right. i want to go back up to skyforce10. mitch blacher in skyforce10 over some breaking news at 30th street station in philly. >> what do you have for us? >> reporter: we're talking about someone who fell on the tracks at 30th street station. they've been taking to presbyterian hospital. we do not know the extent of the injury or what caused the fall at this point. it does not appear to be effecting departing trains. it's the latest from skyforce10. >> all right. 14-year-old boy recovering tonight after he had to be rescued from a river in wilmington. skyforce10 over that brandy wine around 7:35 this morning. he ended up stuck in a bad spot,

40 feet below the bridge at 16th and market. firefighters put on dry suits, they got in the river and they brought that boy blankets. since he wasn't hurt they decided to rescue him with a ladder truck to hoist him to safety. >> once he was warmed and we felt he was stable, we felt the rope rescue option was the better option to remove him. >> and we have blurred that boy's face to protect his identity. after he was lifted to safety he was taken to ai dupont hospital for children. fire officials at the scene told us he is doing okay. police are investigating how and why he ended up in that cold river. >> we have some new information just in to the nbc10 news. philadelphia police have charged a 17-year-old with aggravated assault. police say he slammed an officer to the ground, knocked the officer unconscious this morning. the officer was responding to a disturbance call around 4 this morning. the officer tried making the arrest on academy road in a

we continue to watch this breaking news out of kansas where they've been battling a large fire at an apartment complex under construction as we told you just a few minutes ago. we were watching live as it appeared those flames had traveled across the street to homes nearby. this home on your screen in particular where it is just a total loss there, the entire roof went up in flames. firefighters fighting that fire once again in kansas and we don't have control over these pictures but a short time ago we did see across the road just a huge apartment complex that was under construction that was also heavily involved so we continue to watch this breaking news out of kansas for you.

another story we're watching, the whereabouts of tom brady's missing super bowl jersey. no longer a mystery. authorities have tracked down that prized piece of sporting appar apparel. >> it turned up, john. >> oh, it did. mystery solved. it has been recovered and fbi director james comey little busy today testifying, but the fbi also involved in recovering brady's jersey, the jersey was worn in this year's super bowl. it went missing shortly after the win. houston police and fbi tracked it down in mexico. investigators believe the jersey was stolen by an international media member and sold outside of the u.s. and they actually recovered another tom brady super bowl jersey from his super bowl win two years ago, hopefully this long saga is finally over but if tom brady or i should say when tom brady wins another super bowl, hopefully

look at the roads. they're clear but there are still some of those possess can i piles of the icy snow out there and that's going to be the case even over the next week because some of those piles are ginormous and they're just not going to be going anywhere soon even with warm air coming in for the weekend. warm air. i had to say that twice. i'll get to that in just a moment. we look at our doppler radars and there is nothing here going on in our area. look at the clouds beginning to advance. you can see that with the satellite already making their way into philadelphia. not quite out to the shore but should be there within the next hour or two. what we have is a system that roared through the upper midwest last night bringing strong and severe weather. this is curbing downward. it will end up down into parts of the tennessee valley. we could get clipped especially south and east of philadelphia with maybe a strinkle or shower. it really is becoming rather unlikely that we're going to see

much of anything. let's check the temperatures. we were average 54 is where we should be and that's where we were. we're looking at 47 in lehigh valley. it's 42 as an average in the pennsylvania suburbs, 52 in philly. parkside at 51, fox chase at 51, center city is a 54 degrees. let's check out what's going on in the suburbs. we have west township at 43, exton at 50 and chadds ford at 49 degrees. how about if we head further off to the north and west. el-roy at 49, ft. washington at 50. very pleasant afternoon there. we get in the lehigh valley and berks county. we're looking at 55 in spring and whitehall at 48. a little bit further off to the north and east nazareth at 48.

it isn't until we get in the mt. pocono that it drops into the 30. if we go into delaware, you're looking at 50 and claymont at 50 so very mild there. 52 in felton, dover coming in at 54 and let's check out south jersey. want to make sure you don't feel leftout. clayton at 53, at coat 53, we get up to princeton at 51 and florence is at 50. how about the shore? where everybody is in the low to mid-50s. egg harbor township at 57. so this is where we're going to be going tonight. we're going to be dropping down in allentown to 29, wilmington at 35. as we head through the overnight hours we're going to see the clouds move in. quakertown you'll be at 39

last year. >> in australia a teenager is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by a crocodile and it all started with a dare. he bragged that he could jump in a crocodile infested river and others there, well, they were even egging him on. so he jumped in and was almost immediately attacked by a crocodile. he did manage to punch it several times before getting away. depaul himself called what he did stupid and he even said he did it to impress a girl. >> she's beautiful, caring and kind. i didn't know there was a crock there i just done it. >> it was kind of like that. there's a lot of blood and bone. it was just, you know, it was pretty horrendous. >> his arm was badly injured during that attack. he hopes he can eventually regain its full use. no word on if he got the girl.

jumping across the road to involve some homes in the area. firefighters have been working hard to save those homes. at least one we saw has been lost to this huge fire in overland park, kansas. this apartment complex right here heavily involved. >> now to a developing traffic situation we're following right here in montgomery county. >> construction has the ez-pass express lanes closed at the mid-county toll plaza. >> from up there in the sky, how's it looking? >> reporter: so in the last hour or so we showed you how traffic was flowing pretty well and it's still was up until about five minutes ago when a car stalled on the back end of the toll. they have just pushed it out of the way. you can see the traffic. there's that car sitting there right on the northbound side right pass the toll but it was a real great example of just how easily the traffic can get backed up for about five minutes. there was only one lane getting

passed when you got through the toll. now, the we just got word that the southbound lanes on the express ez-pass lanes they'll be closed starting tomorrow. this all of course because pendot has to upgreat it's electronic equipment for the express ez-pass lanes. right now we're getting a real good taste of just how quickly the traffic situation could deteriorate all from just going down from four lanes to one lane. at this point they've only taking away two lanes, those express lanes but the traffic it seems to be going pretty good. but jim and jackie, the best thing to do, is stay to the left. it looks like the right toll lane is the slowest one, guys. >> good information. doesn't take much to back up that traffic. more traffic talk right now. skyforce10 over the scene of a tractor-trailer accident. this happened just before 2:00 this afternoon on the northeast extension. you can see that trailer flipped on its side after going off the

turnpike and sliding down an embankment. no one was hurt. >> to our first alert weather now, live look at boat house row on kelly drive. sunny, warmer today. temperatures in the 50s for this first day of spring. felt good out there. meteorologist tammie souzza back with us tonight. >> and there's a taste of spring in this forecast but there's also a taste of winter. >> we just can't get rid of it. it was nice at 6:29 this morning that spring has arrived. summer in three months, right? outside you can see haze in the sky as we look across philadelphia and we are seeing .clouds increase. we have a system that moved through the upper midwest that's heading into ohio and tennessee valley and that's going to bring a few sprinkles it looks like perhaps in south jersey and into delaware. there's a possibility of that tonight but it doesn't look like this is going to be a rain event. you can see those clouds that are starting to move in right now. the temperatures are still holding steady basically in the

mid-and upper 40s and even low 50s across the area. here is where we're going to be looking at our trend for tomorrow. starting at 40 for your morning low. and we'll be climbing up about 1:00 just as you finish lunch hour to 50 degrees. we'll make it up to 56 as the high tomorrow. we will exceed where we should be. don't get too attached to this. don't marry this because we're going to be taking a huge tumble by the time we get into wednesday. we'll talk about that when i come back. >> see you soon, tammie. here's a look at some of the stories making headlines. county by county across our region today. berks county, he was accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a local church group event. he assaulted her multiple times back in 2006 in the town of sinking spring. he turned himself in to berks county detectives today so that's the latest from there.

>> two children in lancaster county are finally back home tonight after they became sick drinking what they thought was apple juice. the 10-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl spent about two weeks in the hospital. they had burns to their throats after drinking that liquid. the test show that was not apple juice. health officials shut down the restaurant because of building code violations. >> a new beach ban takes effect in may. you'll no longer allowed to bring a large tent or canopy. first responders said they have trouble navigating during the large tents in an emergency. if you break the rule, $25 fine. small umbrellas and baby tents are still okay. >> medical marijuana facility will be talked about a board meeting in bethlehem township tonight. board of commissioner is kmekted to vote and give final approval. the pennsylvania program to begin in 2018. >> in munts the owners of the balancela plaza office complex are asking pennsylvania for

welcome back. philadelphia man suing a new york city city bar for not serving him. he claims it's because he was wearing a make america great again hat. anyone who sports president trump isn't welcoming at his restaurant. the bar owner did not return the post calls. the meals on wheels program saw big surge in donations after potential cuts were outlined in president trump's budget proposal. it got $100,000 in a two day period. on a typical day it gets about a thousand dollars in donations. the program serve 2.4 million seniors last year. the white house's budget would defund a lot of programs.

quiet. let's go ahead and puts the satellite into play and you can see those clouds beginning to move in to the area. not quite to the sure, yet but definitely moving across philadelphia. we're going to see those clouds thicken overnight. bef a system that's come out of the upper midwest and move to the ohio valley. it will continue on in to parts of the tennessee valley. that's not going to bother us. maybe we get clipped with some sprinkles. that will predominantly be for delaware and south jersey. it's not going to be a big deal. you may get a sprinkle tonight or tomorrow morning. let's put the hour by hour in to play here. temperatures they could get quite chilly at times as we head into the mountain areas and by tomorrow morning you can see maybe a sprinkle or two around the area. for the most part we're going to stay close to 40 at dawn in philadelphia. little bit cooler as you head off to the north and west. we're going to get into the afternoon, start to climb p. temperatures are going to make it well into the 50s.

this forecast model is just a little shy of the mark because i do think we'll be a couple of degrees warmer than this. i think we'll see the mid and upper 50s unless you're out toward mt. pocono. then we get into tomorrow night and you can see that far, far away from us that's where the snow is. we might see a sprinkle. but we cool down. the bigger thing is going to be after tomorrow night wednesday is going to be fierce. look at this. 6:30 in the morning, 18 at mt. pocono, 30 in philadelphia. and it's going to be a brisk day. we may not make it out of the upper 30s on our wednesday. so you're going to have to enjoy near 60 in some places tomorrow and in returning to the upper 30s and low 40s about a 20 degree drop in some areas by the time we get into wednesday. so that's your hour-by-hour forecast just going through it taking a look at everything that's going to go on. we get into thursday and thursday is another chilly day. let's look at the winds. of the winds are out of the northwest for tonight and

they're fairly light but they are going to start to pick up. look at this. we go through tuesday. the winds are calm in the morning. then they really start to ramp up. and with ala we are going to be looking at wind gusts anywhere from 15 to 20 miles an hour bill the time we get into wednesday. here's your ten day trend. we are going to be looking at 58 tomorrow in philadelphia. a little cooler north and west of the area. 39 on wednesday, 32 on thursday. at least we get sunshine both days then we hit 58 on friday. clouds move in. mix of sun and clouds on saturday. 70. we go back to the 40s on sunday with rain. we see some rain on monday and then we start to climb back out of it by the time we get to the middle of next week. >> i am just focused on 70. that's it. he is just a little guy but he's sending out a big thank you tonight. >> he's offering his appreciation to the local crew that helped bring him into the world under pretty unusual circumstances. that story next.
