to bypass security at philadelphia international. that the u.s. attorney says didn't actually happen but a meeting was set up by seth williams where influence was pushed. the u.s. attorney says much of this pay for play is captured in text messages exchanged between williams and those who gave him gifts. here's a little bit of what the u.s. attorney said just moments ago. >> as the indictment alleges mr. williams was willing to compromise his position of public trust in exchange for private financial gain. and that allegation even more unfortunate given the fact that he was elected to protect the interests of the people of philadelphia as their chief law enforcement officer. but there is absolutely nothing about this indictment that bears upon the competency, integrity and professionalism exhibited in courtrooms every day by adas who fight to make this city as safe

as possible. >> reporter: now, williams has not made any public statements or any comments about the indictment so far. his office spokesman says that he was not in the office today, that he was spending time with his family. we're live in center city. i'm mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. >> you've been digging into questions about seth williams and gifts he's received for several months doing sbebs research. >> reporter: yeah, the nbc 10 investigators have done several reports from looking into his finances with his gift disclosures to the biggest gift disclosure, his $45,000 roof on his house. now, we have just learned that some of these gifts, some of these unreported gifts have led to criminal charges. we have tried to ask him questions since the fall about how he spends money and how he collects money. this is what happened when we asked him if some of these scandals could actually lead to criminal charges. >> mr. williams, are you worried about any criminal charges for

4:04 pm
mean to cases that williams oversaw. that would depend on a case by case basis whether there's any grounds for an appeal. in the short-term, however, attorneys i spoke with say the first step is for the district attorney to step down. >> it would be very difficult for him to remain in office. these charges are not just gratuities as had been suspected but actually doing favors in exchange for money essentially allegations of selling his office. >> reporter: criminal defense attorneys tell me this is absolutely unprecedented for the city and the district attorney's office. coming up at 5:00, more reaction from the city of legal community. live in center city, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. our coverage of the indictment of seth williams is just getting started. we're digging through the indictment and looking through the text messages that he sent to those who gave him gifts. deanna durante will bring us some of those at 4:30. right now 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with a video of
