tonight on nbc 10 news at 6:00, philadelphia spring tourism. april kicks off a busy week in the city. we're breaking down all the events for you. a life saving rescue. fire crews say one man is lucky to be alive after what happened here in southwest philadelphia. and a deadly crash in south jersey. we'll tell you what happened here in burlington county that killed one drive and sent two others to the hospital. nbc 10 news starts now. good evening. welcome to nbc 10 news at 6:00. today is the first day of a big month for philadelphia. many events are returning as the spring season really gets going. drew, with the crowds out today, if it's any indication, we can expect a very busy month ahead.

>> reporter: everybody wants to get out and turn the page on the month of march. the sun made an appearance and people are running up the steps taking their photos here today. chopping down trees, making it look real nice out here. across the streets, they are cleaning up from a race today. but that will be the spot of a lot of action in the beginning weeks as they begin to build the big stage for the nfl draft experience. the trees are beginning to bloom. love is in the air. and it's time to get outside. >> it's here. spring's back. >> reporter: the subaru cherry blossom festival began today. the japanese house and garden is opening its gates in fairmount park for the first time since october. >> we've been fielding calls for the last two, three weeks, when are you opening, why can't i come out sooner. people are ready. >> reporter: at the art museum,

it means salsa. it was packed on this saturday. there will soon be another museum option in the city. >> this is a last major exterior piece, like a little decoration on the top of the cake. >> reporter: a crane lowered 3,000 pound sculpture panel of the american revolution ahead of its april 19th open. >> every morning there's a line of nose prints on the glass behind me. it's amazing to see. >> reporter: cranes also at work outside city hall. a huge welcome banner for the nfl draft is now up. as the city prepares for one of its biggest events of the year. the tourists are out in strong numbers today. at the end of the month, that is the nfl draft as well as the relays on the same weekend. it will probably be tough to get a hotel room that weekend. >> thank you, drew.

tonight philadelphia fire officials say one man is lucky to be alive after this home collapsed right on top of him. fire crews had to dig through the rubble before pulling off the rescue. andrea cline-thomas is live in southwest philadelphia to walk us through what happened. andrea? >> reporter: well, denise, i want to start here by showing you this car that's completely covered with dirt. it shows you the impact of that collapse. but walk with me. what's even more startling especially when looking at all this rubble is that a man made it out of the house alive. daylight reveals a gaping hole between homes on yo com street. a home collapsed overnight. >> they've been fixing on this abandoned building for a while. but nobody knew nobody was down there. >> reporter: the sound of the crumbling bricks was a rude awakening for neighbors. >> i woke up with all the fire

trucks outside. i was like, what's going on? >> reporter: what was worse, some say they heard the man inside screaming for help. first responders managed to rescue the 59-year-old who say is homeless and was squatting in the vacant house. >> two abandoned houses next to it that caught on fire years ago. nobody took care of the house well enough. >> reporter: neighbors say there had been work on property that once occupied the space for the past few weeks. some said the collapse wasn't entirely a surprise. now, back out here live. that 59-year-old was taken to penn presbyterian hospital for treatment. i was able to talk to the contractor who was doing work out here for the past few weeks. but he hung up and did not answer any of our questions. reporting live in south west philadelphia, andrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. a 14-year-old was killed this afternoon when the atv he

was driving flipped over in burlington county. two passengers were hurt. the accident happened at new road in tabernacle. authorities tell us the passenger's injuries don't appear to be serious. three children were taken to the hospital after an armored truck collided with a car sending that car crashing into a building. the kids are expected to be okay. the crash happened this afternoon the at the corner of broad and brown streets. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. a follow-up to a story with efirst brought you last week on nbc 10. police in chester county have someone in custody tonight for putting a skimming device at a gas station. police said this picture of that skimming device. it was found inside a pump at the exxon gas station on lincoln highway. the device is used to steal credit card information and potentially people's identities.

the bridge at a site used to store noncombustible construction materials, including coils of plastic. >> it takes something to cause something like that to burn. high-density plastic that is noncombustible. >> two other people were also arrested. they're charged with criminal trespass. this ebelieve the trio may be homeless. one child has died and a dozen other people sickened after a carbon monoxide leak inside a michigan hotel. police at the quality inn called 911 after seeing six unresponsive children on the pool deck this morning. authorities say a high level of carbon monoxide was detected in the area, and they immediately began pulling the children out. officials are trying to find the source of that leak. next on nbc 10 news, poking fun.

today is the start of trout season in southeastern pennsylvania. anglers can go for the big one in berks, bucks, lehigh, montgomery and philadelphia counties. the rest of the state can go fishing in a couple weeks. crews have stocked streams and lakes with thousands of trout, so good luck out there. a celebration of children and the latino culture in center city today. thousands turned out for the ninth annual day of the child at the franklin institute. a family's got to explore exhibits and meet nbc 10

personalities, christian, and erika was also there. nbc 10 and telemundo 62 are proud sponsors of the event. people gathered in washington square park to battle for international pillow fight day. some came in costumes, others brought the kids along. after the fight, pillows were donated to got laundry who will wash them and give them to people who are homeless. the phillies phanatic kicks off the seventh annual charity 5k today. thousands of runners made their way around citizens bank park and through south philadelphia. the race raised money for phillies charities. the phillies return to action at citizens bank park next week. nbc 10 will help welcome them home. watch the home opener against the washington nationals next

i'm erika martin with your most accurate forecast. we are seeing thinning clouds out there. a mix of mid and upper level clouds. pretty much a cloudy day all day long. we're seeing a break in the clouds and we have a mostly clear night in the forecast. here it is. that area of low pressure well out to sea. that wreaked all that havoc across the views area, bringing an inch to over 2 1/2 inches for some. however, right now, we're under the influence of a high pressure system that will continue to bring us mostly clear to clear skies, at least through the second half of monday. and then i'm tracking some rain late monday into tuesday. currently temperatures are mainly in the 50s. we are seeing upper 40s for coatesville and allentown. atlantic city 51. and mount holly, your current temperature is 50 degrees. we topped out at 53 in philadelphia. current temperature 52.

and the normal high, or average high is 59 degrees. so we're working our way up there. at least we'll be above that by tomorrow. current wind profile coming out of the northwest, giving us chillier feels-like temperatures. moderate wind speeds ranging between 17 miles per hour in allentown, 16 for philadelphia, 18 for melville. they will start to diminish later tonight. but for right now, temperatures are still a little uncomfortable. those are our overnight low temperatures. conditions for sunday include mostly sunny to sunny skies. i am going oh leave breezy. on monday, we're going to see clouds developing as an area of low pressure starts to develop. temperatures will top out only in the low 60s. we're going to see low 60s on tuesday with the threat of thunderstorms of the by wednesday, folks, mix of sun and clouds.

thursday, looks like more unsettled weather coming into the area. we do have rain in the forecast for friday for phillies. phillies game opener. temperatures only in the upper 50s. at least we'll be seasonal this time of year. by next sunday, it looks like we still have a chance for rain early in the day and then clearing monday and tuesday. next monday and tuesday we could have some rain. i did have -- we did have an area of the lows for tonight but we do have to, of course, talk sports. the flyers haven't taken the ice yet tonight. they're already a little closer to being eliminated from play-off contention. one of the finalists for player of the year joined the team today. we'll hear from the newest flyer and let you know when he might play. that's next in sports.
