side. let's start with our top story on a monday morning. talking about damaging storms ripping through the south, with another day of severe weather on tap. we'll get to al's forecast in a moment. but first, maya rodriguez is in alexandria, louisiana. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, mat. overnight in alexandria, heavy rains flooded streets and homes here. so far, the storms have killed two people and left more than 40,000 without power across 5 states. overnight, heavy storms battering parts of the gulf coast. lightning streaking across the sky. >> there it is, tornado. >> reporter: a tornado moving quickly across the highway, a reports of multiple tornadoes hitting the state sunday. just 20 miles away at this strip mall in alexandria, stunned shoppers looked on as a funnel cloud appears. >> the winds are picking up.

>> reporter: rapidly forming into a twister, blowing out windows. >> the windows are busted out of the car. >> reporter: powerful winds leaving a path of destruction. bringing down trees and power lines. collapsing part of a gas station, ripping the roof off of this home. earlier, another tornado brought tragedy to one family in louisiana. after 100-mile-per-hour winds flipped this mobile home, killing a woman and her 3-year-old daughter. the husband and father, inconsolable. >> i lost everything. i lost everything. i lost my family. >> reporter: in other parts of the state, lightning caused this oil tanker to go up in flames. the weekend's severe weather, just the latest in a day's long barrage across the region. with flash flooding, damaging winds and hail, all possible in the coming days. this morning, the threat of severe weather will push east into mississippi, alabama and

georgia, putting more than 20 million people in the path of these storms. matt? >> maya rodriguez, thank you very much. al's map tells that exact story. more troubling weather. >> unfortunately, we've got tornado watches, severe thunderstorm watches and flood watches as this system moves east from the mid mississippi river valley all the way down into new orleans. we're looking at very severe weather. today, as you just heard, 20 million at risk. tornado risk is highest along the gulf, including the florida panhandle. tomorrow, it lessens just a little bit. 10 million people at risk, from oklahoma into missouri and again, along the gulf. it fires up for wednesday. we're talking 43 million people at risk for damaging wind, hail and strong storms from the tennessee -- mississippi river valley all the way up into the southeast. as this system pushes through, airports will be a big problem. travel delays from the southeast to the mid-atlantic.

and it will be round after round of not just strong storms. but heavy rain, snow, into new england, by tuesday afternoon. look at the rainfall amounts into saturday. 3 to 7 inches of rain through the lower mississippi river valley. but it stretches all the way up into the northeast, with 4 to 5 inches of rain. we'll probably be looking at flood watches up and down the eastern seaboard. travel delays, big, big problems as we move on into the middle of the week. >> welcome back. that was a fun week. >> we had a good time. this will be a critical and busy week for the white house. the senate judiciary committee is set to vote on president trump's supreme court nominee, neil gorsuch. it sets up a high-stakes showdown with democrats who want to block confirmation. the ongoing investigations into russia meddling in the election. nikki haley saying there's no question that moscow was involved and the actions will be addressed. and break overnight, we learned that jared kushner is in

iraq. an unannounced trip for the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. he will play a key role in president trump's meeting with china's president. >> our team ready to break it down. with the white house issuing tough new talk on north korea, lester holt has made his way to the region. but let's begin with peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. first, a senior white house official confirming to me overnight that jared kushner is in iraq. there with the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. his father-in-law, the president, has meetings with china, egypt and jordan. he's eyeing his first domestic victory here, the confirmation of neil gorsuch. and even as president trump is tripped up by the wiretapping dwe twe tweet, he is spoending to "the financial times." we issue hundreds of tweets and

every once in a while you have a clinker, that's not so bad. but the wiretapping tweet, he ns insists, without evidence, is turning out to be true. a stalemate over the supreme court, despite the president's praise for neil gorsuch. >> judge gorsuch's nomination is about more than his just incredible qualifications. it's about preserving our republic. >> reporter: standing in gorsuch's way, a divided senate. >> neil gorsuch will be confirmed this week. how this happens depends on our democratic friends. >> reporter: the democrats threatening to block gorsuch. >> it's highly unlikely he will get 60. when a nominee doesn't get 60 votes, you shouldn't change the rules. you should change the nominee. >> reporter: gorsuch needs eight democrats onboard. so far, he only has three. if democrats force the issue, mitch mcconnell is threatening

to do something that's never happened with a supreme court nominee, deploying the so-called nuclear option. changing senate rules to override democrats, confirming gorsuch with a simple majority, just 51 votes. a move that could have far-reaching implications long after gorsuch is confirmed. this battle goes back more than a year. democrats angry about republicans' refusal for giving president obama's pick a hearing. and also, president trump is looking to resurrect the health care plan, playing golf with rand paul. >> i think the sides are getting closer together. i remain optimistic that we will get obamacare repealed. >> reporter: the president venting his anger about the russian investigation, dismissing it as a scam. mr. trump blaming leaks, writing, find the leakers. all of it as michael flynn's business ties to russia come under renewed scrutiny. two sets of flynn's disclosure

forms show he failed to list three russian-linked companies that paid him for speaking engagements. flynn's lawyer saying the first filing was just a draft that had bundled speaking fees and was not completed because flynn lost his job a few days after the submission. as for the president's son-in-law, and senior adviser, jared kushner, who is in iraq, traveling with the joint chief of staffs, a trip confirmed by a senior white house official, kushner and ivanka, an official but unpaid adviser to the president, have hundreds of millions of real estate holdings. but ivanka keeping a stake in her father's d.c. hotel. a source familiar with ivanka trump's plans, all of her business decisions were made after a consultation after a meeting with white house ethics lawyers here, to remove, as they say, any potential conflicts. matt and savannah? >> peter, thank you. >> let's bring in nicolle

wallace and ari. this was a week for the confirmation neil gorsuch. and to hear mitch mcconnell tell it, he's going to get confirmed. but what are the stakes here? >> the stakes are high, as republicans will bend the rules. republicans made the original fight over the obama era about the seat, not the man. they won. now, democrats have painted themselves in a corner, making this about the man not the seat. and they are on the precipice of losing. >> he says democrats are painted themselves in a corner. so, if republicans go nuclear, which is the term that everybody is using, and they require only a majority vote, according to the rules, how will this play out? and which party has more to lose in this? >> i think democrats are snatching defeat in the jaws from victory.

to their base, they may be satisfied for tyaking a hide of garland. but people that may have glanced at the confirmation hearings, they saw gorsuch was qualified. a republican president replacing a conservative judge with another conservativconservative shift the balance of the court. it was a silly fight for democrats to pick. >> let's talk about jared kushner. he has a visit to iraq. he has a broad portfolio. >> the world. >> is that unusual? >> yes. it's one of the more stun ining- the stars have aligned in jared and ivanka, in that they are the most intimate people in trump's orbit. and they are the most influential advisers among a power-hungry white house staff. jared is in iraq. there's some reports in his role of setting up the meeting with

the chinese. what draws them into the crosshairs on questions of ethics isn't whether or not they filled out the right forms. it's just the vastness of the influence. >> that's a good way to turn to you. there's a lot of what ifs. what if the holdings put them in conflicts of this decision or that? what if his businesses impact the president's decision on other topics? at the moments have you see anything than what ifs? do you see a red flag on the pole for everyone to look at? >> flying media around the pole. whether or not the money came through, it raised a question if they are speaking for the business or for the public interest in their roles. the d.c. hotel post office hotel has a provision that says you can't be a federal employee and make money from it. that is an open question. these are fixable things and they've met the legal limit that

other employees hit. but there's a lot of questions of which hats the s they're wea because they're wearing a lot of hats. >> we'll be pack in touch with both of you this week. have a good week. >> thank you, guys. now, to a scene of desperation that's playing out in south america, after an avalanche of mud buried a mountain town. now, rescue worker s race to fid survivors. tommy leitner is there. tammy, good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. a wall of water came rushing down here, carrying everything in its way, including this giant bus. as you can see behind me, rescuers have been working around the clock, frantically searching for the hundreds that are still missing. this morning, a desperate search for the missing. as survivors of one of the worst natural disasters in recent history, struggle to hold out

hope. we've lost a lilt baby, this woman says. a little baby. we can't find him anywhere. this man brought to tears, looking at a list of dozens of missing children. i will not rest, says this grandmother, who hasn't seen her family since the disaster first struck. it happened early saturday, as the small city of mocoa slept. a rainstorm causing rivers to swell, sending mud and debris towards the town's 40,000 unsuspecting residents. the wall of water so powerful, entire neighborhoods washed away. homes and bridges, destroyed. the nation's president has declared a state of emergency. and colombia's military is now scrambling to help. many of the roads are impassable. the colombian military is flying in supplies. food, water, bedding. there's a rush to take care of the survivors, as well as search

for those still missing. this weekend's avalanche, a reminder that colombia is bropr to natural disasters. in 1985, nearly 20,000 people died when a volcano erupted, triggering massive mudslides. this man says he has nothing to eat, nowhere to sleep, and is wearing borrowed clothes. le the level of devastation clearly win on the face of those left overcome this local tragedy. locals tell us they buried about 100 people yesterday. but they're holding out hope that more people will be found alive. >> tammy leitner on this story for us. thank you very much. president trump is also speaking out about how to deal with growing threats posed by north korea. nbc's lester holt has more on that. he's in seoul, south korea th, s morning. how are you? >> reporter: salvannah, the

president's marks if carolina does not climb onboard, will do nothing to diffuse tensions here. especially when north korea is trying enhance nuclear weapons capabilities. that puts the focus on the service members here and the risk of hostilities. read dy to fight tonight, is th slogan at osan air base. >> the jets are ready for combat mode. we train to it all the time. we go out in regular training missions and training for those skill sets. >> reporter: also at osan air base, we get a rare peek at the operation center, where operators are the first to detect the north's ballistic missile launches. the missiles putting millions in the region at risk, including tens of thousands of american military personnel, and u.s. civilians, like teachers steve and lea rigby who live in seoul.

do the threats from north korea, do they rattle you? or do you take them with a grain of salt? >> it's spring, we're going to hear another threat that south korea is going to be turned into lake of fire. we've heard it before and nothing has happened before. >> reporter: seoul is a modern metropolis of over 10 million people and hardly looks like a place under constant military attack. but shelters are plentiful and marked. we're 100 mills of the dmz. what's casting a chill all the way to washington, is north korea is claiming to work on an intercontinental missile and a warhead capable of reaching the u.s. >> this is a threat of rhetoric and growing capability. right now, it appears to be going in a very reckless manner. >> reporter: secretary mattis will get no argument from this man, a high-ranking north korean diplomat who defected last year.

>> and i was asked these questions, i always, you know, tell them that kim jong-un is a person who did not even hesitate to kill his uncle, even his half-brother. so, he's a man who can do anything. >> reporter: in addition to missile developments, activity spotted on this commercial satellite photo suggests north korea may test another nuclear warhead soon. >> think of this as two streams that are moving fords each other. you never want the streams to cross. when they do, the u.s. will be forced to make a decision, whether or not to do a preemptive strike. >> reporter: it's important to note there's about 300,000 u.s. citizens living in south korea. the vast majority of them here in seoul. i attended a briefing with u.s. military officials who said a lot of the planning is focused on how to get the american civilians out, if, in fact, hostilities were ever to break

as well. >> reporter: good morning. authorities here at the tennessee bureau of investigation says they have more than 1,200 tips since the pair went missing three weeks ago today. so far, there's been just one credible sighting as this mystery deepens. this morning, authorities say this is the only solid lead so far, in the disappearance of elizabeth thomas. surveillance video from march 15th, showing thomas and tad cummins, her teacher at school, together at a walmart in oklahoma city. it appears that cummins darkened his hair and thomas may have red hair. they bought food and paid in cash. >> it is our proof positive that he did abduct her. >> reporter: cummins' wife, jill, who begged for him to turn himself in, has filed for divorce. and overnight, at an emotional vigil in elizabeth's hometown in

tennessee, friends pleaded for her safe return. >> she was groomed. this man manipulated her, brainwashed her and took advantage of her. >> reporter: her father, giving new details to nbc news, on how he believes cummins manipulated her. >> he was molding her mind and convincing her. >> reporter: when a student reported seeing the pair kissing in a classroom, it set off a firestorm in the school, that sum cummins used to his advantage. >> tad had been telling her because of the kissing incident, she would never be able to attend college. wouldn't be accepted in college. and wouldn't be able to get a career after that. >> reporter: investigators discovered secret messages between the two on an e-mail account. >> this is not a romance. there's nothing pretty about this. this is a crime. and it's a serious crime. >> reporter: cummins is considered armed and dangerous. he faces aggravated kidnapping

monoxide leak. >> jeff rossen in here. >> reporter: this is a superimportant one. it is a silent killer. carbon monoxide poisoning poisons over 10,000 a year. a group of kids playing at this hotel pool got poisoned by the gas. they had no idea they were breathing it in. no warning at all. this morning, we have the latest on this tragic case and how you can protect your family right now. >> priority one medical at the quality inn and suites. >> reporter: a terrifying scene at this michigan hotel. >> the mother was screaming up and down the hallway, my kids, my kids. >> reporter: kids, passed out on the floor near the pool. >> i didn't see movement in their bodies at all. >> reporter: officials say it was a malfunctioning pool heater, leaking carbon monoxide into the air.

this boy was injured along with nearly a dozen others. a 13-year-old boy even killed. investigators confirming there was no carbon monoxide detector near the pool. and believe it or not, in michigan, not all hotels require them.y constructed hotels. this one isn't new. in fact, most states don't require them in motels. choice motels cited this latest leak, telling nbc news, safety is their highest priority. and they're working with officials, calling this an isolated incident. and it's true. most deadly carbon monoxide l k leaks happen inside our homes. just months ago, this father and his 9-year-old son killed by high levels of carbon monoxide at home. and in january, a leak killing this young couple and their cats, inside their apartment. this house right here. to show you the danger, we teamed up with the st. paul,

delays. moving through toward the area where you split off before you go to philadelphia, 295, we'll see delays. rosemary, back to you. this morning, philadelphia police are looking for three teenage boys who grabbed a 13-year-old girl right off the street and sexually assaulted her. police tell us the boys kidnapped and attacked the victim in hunting park yesterday. they say the girl was walking on butler street when the teens abducted her. the assault happened inside this abandoned house. the victim is now recovering at st. christopher's hospital for children. philly police are also looking for the person who firebombed a woman's house in west philadelphia. somebody threw a molotov cocktail at the house on reno street late yesterday. the device blew out the windows at the house and set the first floor on fire. firefighters were able to rescue the woman who was trapped on the second floor of the home. she was not injured. detectives have been talking to her in the case. we'll have another update in about 25 minutes. don't forget to join us every weekday morning for "nbc10 news today" from 4:30 to 7:00.

>> the 1970s was political violence, economic disaster. political crisis with watergate. >> reporter: out of that chaos came the sla, a disorganized but deadly domestic terrorist group of eight people, in 1974, kidnapped cal berkeley student, patricia hearst. >> i have trouble figuring out what it was these people wanted, except to be noticed. and that they accomplished. >> reporter: she was the granddaughter of william randolph hearst, newspaper t tycoon and inspiration for citizen kane." >> the name hearst was to the

1970s. >> reporter: while her family pleaded for her to come home, the sla had audio recordings to confirm her kidnapping. >> i'm making this tape to let you know i'm robbed a san francisco bank. and there was patricia hearst, automatic rifle in hand, looking more like a gunman on a victim. >> the impact of the photographs of patty hearst with a machine gun were in some ways bigger than the kidnapping itself because it established or so it appeared, that patty hearst had gone to the other side. >> reporter: it was a story the press and the public could not resist, even if there was more to that photo than people realized. >> the similla told her, we're g to rob a bank. you're going to be up front. there will be a number of guns behind you. one false step on your part and

we'll gun you down. >> reporter: after the robbery, the sla and their newest member, became america's most wanted fugitives, turning up a month later in los angeles. as two of her kidnappers get stopped at a sporting good store, hearst shot out the building to come this their aid. >> that was the moment that she was established that she was really a member of the sla and . >> reporter: the fallout was immediate. the next day her other six captors were tracked to a house in south-central l.a. and killed in a shoot-out with lapd. more than a year on the run followed, including another bank robbery, in which a mother of four was killed while helping her church deposit donations. hearst drove the getaway car. she was arrested in 1975, 19 months after her kidnapping.

magazines like "time" were billing the case as the trial of the century. the hearsts brought in the biggest defense attorney, f. lee bailey. take me back to the moment when you first met patty hearst. >> i was talking to a zombie. >> reporter: a case of potential brainwashing that four decades later stands out as wholly unique. >> there is no case like patty hearst. she was a wealthy, secure woman, who turned up after 60 days after being alleged warrior. and the trial was about how did that happen? >> reporter: ultimately, the jury convicted hearst for her role in the robbery, sentencing her to seven years in prison. >> in some respects it was a verdict on the young people of the 1970s. it was a verdict that said, you know, we gave you every advantage. and you turned on us.

and you became one of the bad guys. >> reporter: while her surviving kidnappers served jail time for the death, her sentence was commuted by president carter and she was pardoned by president clinton. >> she wound up living the life for which she was destined. she trained show dogs. she has grandchildren. she has a nice, quiet suburban life. that's all her parents wanted for her. finally, that's what she got. >> reporter: hearst is the only person in u.s. history have to her sentence commuted by one president and be pardoned by a second. only one member of the sla is serving in prison. he's in prison in san quentin for murdering a school superintendent. >> the fascination of it, it holds up after all these years. >> there's never been a case like it since. >> good job, steph.

the royal family. it comes from a new biography, exploring prince charles' marriage to diana and with his new wife, camilla. >> keir simmons is at buckingham palace with that. >> reporter: fans of the show, "the crown," that what the royal family shows out here is not what's going on in there. charles and diana, diana saying there were three people in their marriage. but it turns out there may be more to learn. 20 years since diana, a new book opening old wou wounds. it portrays her as emotionally troubled. prescribed antidepressants before her honeymoon, but refusing to take them, believing that the royal family wanted to sedate her. charles felt trapped from the beginning. >> he was pressurized into making a decision quickly by his father. what a huge decision that was.

and possibly a bad decision. >> reporter: the couple, famo famously asked if they were in love. >> of course. >> what does in love mean? >> reporter: as the marriage crumbled, the people's princess was pictured alone in india. but a sympathetic public did not see the wild rages, the broook' author claims. perhaps most controversially, the book recounts diana's suspicion of camilla. she wept before her fiancee left because he had taking a call that night from camilla, the author writes. a reminder of charles and camilla ice history will not receive a royal welcome. charles hopes that camilla will be named queen when he takes the throne. while diana, the book claims, would taunt charles, that he would never be king. the author suggesting she attempted suicide.

he, alleged, receiving therapy for 14 years. for william and harry, the book's contents will be painful. in a year, they plan to mark the anniversary of her death. the boys talking lately about losing their mom. william telling this little girl he was 15 when diana died. harry admitting it took a long time to express groef. >> for the first 28 years of my life, never talked about i. >> reporter: the author paints diana as a woman with emptiness. that's not the way they remember her. a mother who would greet them with open arms and who they lost too soon. so many memories. i guess it's just worth pointing out, guys, that charles and camilla, because of their position, can't respond to allegations. and diana isn't here to defend herself. matt? savannah? >> that's a no-win situation, keir. coming up in ex-a survivor of the boston marathon bombing taking her life back nearly four

years later. first, this is "today" on nbc.

this year marked four years since the boston marathon bombing. rebecca and her young son were just feet away from the blast and they survived. now, rebecca is sharing her story in a new book, taking my life back. >> i was three feet away from a bomb. i'm still here. i'm pretty blessed. >> reporter: rebecca was cheering on a friend at the f finish line. her son sitting at her feet. what happened next would change their lives forever. she was rushed to a boston hospital, fighting for her life. her young son suffered minor injuriey sies. his mom's legs shielding him. rebecca spent a mththrough it ad

determination inspired so many. her injuries were so severe, she would later lose her leg. and then, showing everyone exactly what boston strong means, she got a prosthetic leg, named it feliz ya. and in 2015, she ran in the boston marathon. >> when i crossed the finish line, i took my life back today. >> reporter: a month later, dzhokhar tsaranev was convicted. rebecca released a letter to him that went viral. >> today, i looked at you right in the face and realized i wasn't afraid anymore. now, when you're sitting in solitary confinement awaiting if the verdict on your life, i will be enjoying everything this beautiful world has to offer. >> reporter: rebecca moved on with her life. she married. then, endured a painful later r reuniting with her college sweetheart and faced another incredible challenge. their baby girl was born several months premature. like her mother before her, she

was fighting for her life. remembbecca says her faith founr through it all. now, riley is happy, healthy and nearly 1. rebecca's story of pry ump over adversity, her strength through challenges, has made her a lasting symbol of grace. you already had me crying, rebekah. you wrote this book. you turned 30 next week. that was your goal, wasn't it? >> i promised by 30 i would have a book published. and i cannot believe it's out tomorrow. and i'm 30 next week. 30. >> and you have so many things to talk about. you have such a story to tell. how are you doing? that's the first question everybody wants to know the answer to. >> this is a great chapter of my life. just like i said on the piece, i'm very blessed. and i continue to feel blessed. i feel like we go through chapters of our life that are difficult. and i've had those. as an amazing husband who

supports me in everything i do and two, beautiful children, i'm here to tell my story. >> one thing i like about the book is you're honest and worth coming what is still a struggle. what are the challenges. and you talk about dealing with ptsd. dealing with the trauma of the bombing. >> people think that because it was four years ago, we've moved on with our lives. but people don't understand the emotional impact of everything is so much greater than the physical. so, what we saw that day, people's body parts were on the ground next to us. bones were laying on the sidewalk. blood, nails, ball behrings, that sticks with you. there's nightmares. and you're afraid to go to the airport and leave a bag unattended. it creeps up in everyday life. >> how is noah doing? he was there. your legs shielded him. he's a healthy little boy? >> he is wonderful. he is running around like nothing ever happened to him. he likes to tell people, i got blown up by a bomb and here's my

scars. >> little boys are little boys. tell me about your daughter. that's a miracle and so wonderful. doctors weren't sure if you would be able to carry a child. but you did carry riley. and she was very premature. how is she doing? >> she is wonderful. doctors told me i would never have a baby again. that was sad noah. but riley did come into our lives. we spent quite a few days in the nicu. we're ready to celebrate her first birthday. >> it struck me, your story. all these things in life, people fear. what if harm came to me or my family or they worry about a divorce or a struggle with oa child. many of the things have actually happened to you. and here you are, the better for it. where does that come from? >> i feel like everyone's life blows up in their face,

literally and figuratively sometimes. and i've been through different aspect oss of that. and i've had heartache. at the end of the day, i'm here to tell my story. and with each chapter, i learn so much about myself. and i have a greater appreciation for the world around me. and i'm so thankful for that. >> one of the things you said, the hardest chapters bring you to the most beautiful ones. you have to wait long enough to get there. and i know your faith is important to you. this isn't some faith that you put up on a shelf to admire. you had to really put it to the test. >> i have. and there's been times when i turned away from it. but every time i turned away, i have been shown that there's such a greater power out there. and god reveals himself to me in the strongest ways. and so, my determination outweighs my fear every day. and because i was at the boston marathon and i got blown up does not mean that my life stop there's. i was three feet from a bomb. i'm here today. i'm blessed, regardless of

♪ 8:46. we're back with "today food." in her newest book, a new way to bake, martha stewart helps you approach a healthier style to baking. these can't desserts that are really healthy for you. but they're healthier than the classic recipe. >> using new ingredients, new flour. flour that's made not just of wheat but spelt and farrow and

more dense whole wheat flours. and it's not all gluten-fre. people aren't so gluten-intoll rent anymore, either. >> these are great recipes. making chocolate chip cookies. how do you go away from the traditional recipe? >> we're using farrow flour. you can use spelt flour. whole wheat flour. we're using farrow. and the farrow -- you want to sift or add? you add. to butter and brown sugar, two eggs and two tablespoons of vanilla, flour, 1 and a quarter teaspoons of baking soda and salt. want to use your elbow grease, dump all that in.

adding chocolate. coarsely chopped chocolate. walnuts, any kind of nuts. >> you can put dates in yours? >> you can put dates, apricots and peaches. this is a dense batter. a lot of good ingredients. you have some chocolate. >> i'm going to eat those here. once you get done with that. you make them a little smaller. some people make cookies that are too big. >> it depends on what you're going to use them for. you can eat two of these. use an ice cream scoop like this because you're going to get uniformized cookies. >> look how beautiful they come out. >> and skim or 2% milk. >> now, a different take on a traditional chocolate cake. what's the add or take away here? >> the addition of a vegetable to your batter. >> carson doesn't like beets, by the way. he's downstairs. see if you can sell him on this. >> see if he doesn't like them.

take about 25 minutes. steam them, peel them, grind them up to a fine pure. and you can make borsht out of this, if you want. we're using spelt flour and cane sugar. a brown, less refined sugar. a little all-purpose -- this book doesn't not use white flour. use a little white flour, that gives a lighter cookie. >> you mix the dry ingredients first. and adding the wet ingredients. >> you can add the eggs. >> okay. two eggs. >> two eggs. and beat those. and this is all done by hand. you don't have to use a mixer. >> a little vanilla. >> a little vanilla. add the beets. here's a rubber scraper. >> okay. how is it, guys? >> what is the beat beets inst? >> are you replacing beets?

>> the melted chocolate. water and sunflower oil. there's no butter. it's less caloric. but it makes a beautiful, beautiful batter. line your pan. using a brownie pan. line it with strips of parchment paper. i use these clips to hold it in place. >> can i try it? if you add healthier ingredie ingredients, it doesn't matter if it doesn't taste good. >> you bet. and everything in this book tastes delicious. i think. i love all of the recipes. what do you think? nice? >> pretty good. >> and the genashe, it's melted cream. >> i want to know what jack thinks. >> i don't taste it. i think the cake tastes awesome. >> did he say awful?
