a local team plotted to kill pope francis right here in philadelphia. right now at 11:00, an nbc 10 exclusive. a teenager killed on his front steps. a father shot trying to defend hi son and cab driver attacked. the same teenager is involved in all these crimes and many more. >> that 17-year-old is accused of terrorizing a west philadelphia neighborhood but mr. accomplice say he is now off the streets. >> he is a suspect in one homicide two shootings and seven robberies. the crimes took place over six blocks in west philadelphia in the last two weeks. >> denise nakano has the details on his arrest and how hiss victims are recovering. >> reporter: this woman is thankful her brother is out of the hospital after police say he

was shot in the face during a shooting and robbery rampage in west philadelphia. >> praying for him too. at this point he needs prayer too. >> reporter: the two-week crime spree is over after the arrest of a 17-year-old. police believe he is responsible for seven robberies at gunpoint two shootings, and one murder. investigators say he didn't know any of the victims, that he went after ten people in the market street corridor between 59th and 62nd streets allegedly using a gun he took from a victim. it started on march 17th with the robbery of a cab driver. fast forward to march 26th. he is accused of robbing several people at gun point. sometimes while on a bike and getting away with as little as 20 bucks. police say the worst, the murder of a 17-year-old who was shot

several times in the chest. one woman showed me the community newspaper that profiled the victim as she described the gunfire that took his life. >> we thought it was a car backfiring or a tire going flat and next second, we heard another boom. >> reporter: police took him into custody at his mother's home. >> amen he's off the streets. that's a blessing to everybody else. >> reporter: in west philadelphia, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. now to your first alert weather tonight. thunderstorms are getting closer to our area. >> the rain has started in some areas. you can see it here on the cam program from cape may. the storms could make for a noisy night. >> let's get an update on when they could arrive in your neighborhood. glenn? >> it's already raining hard in some parts of the area. there's citizens bank park. you can see the wet roads here and it's about to get heavier as

you can see on the radar, this area down in delaware, into south jersey is headed in our direction and there isn't a whole lot behind it, as you can see. the heaviest of the rain and the greatest threat of thunderstorms will occur with that line. that would be around 11:17 in wilmington. around midnight in philadelphia. about 12:24 in ben salem and there could be other storms that develop over night as you will see here. the futurecast showing the heavy rain and thunderstorms as we go through the midnight to 2:00 a.m. hour. then some more storms farther to the south that are around until 3:00, 4:00 in the morning. as we go toward the morning rush it's on the dryer side around philadelphia. just a few showers around then. but even more storms coming later on during the week.

and i'll talk about that in a couple minutes. >> new tonight, new details at a shooting at a housing complex. four were shot and two are dead and many bullets fired into this area. >> what have you learned, drew? >> reporter: some of the top people here are looking into this crime. they are looking for two people seen running away, possibly getting to a gray suv and what they left behind, city leaders are describing as a scene of senseless carnage. tonight, neighbors trying to make sense of what sounded like warfare out their windows, found bullet holes in their cars. >> people lay there dead and the kids walk past the dead body. >> reporter: it wasn't much of a fight. the four men between 25 and 30 years old hit several times. one taking two direct hits to

the head. >> we believe that someone came east from this location and started firing. one shooter, maybe two. >> reporter: the violence began as school let out next door. >> all you heard is shots. >> reporter: as crime scene investigators used metal detectors to tally up the damage the school went into lockdown. >> one underlying common theme is too many weapons on the street. >> reporter: family friends say the victims grew up in this public housing development and working to get beyond trouble in their past. we saw detectives speaking with families tonight. >> senseless, man. i'm praying for the families right now. >> reporter: just one block over from the shooting scene is 10th and thompson which is the name sake for the tnt gang. several of the members were busted for what the d.a. called ongoing feuds and gun battles.

it does show a history of gang violence in that area. i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. a big ball of flames at a barn in bucks county tonight. crews were called to the scene just after 9:00. sky force 10 flew overhead as the flames and smoke shot into the sky. no one on what started the fire. no one was hurt. a guilty plea from a new jersey teenager who admitted plotting to kill the pope. the man admitted he tried to hire a sniper to shoot pope francis back in 2015. an undercover fbi agent said that he scaled building and climbed on roofs to scout the best locations. he faces up to 15 years in prison. russian president vladimir putin placed flowers at at the site of a subway explosion in

st. petersburg. the bomb exploded inside the train car as it sat in a tunnel between stations. witnesses say someone threw a backpack in the train car before it left the platform. but investigators have not confirmed that or if this was an act of terrorism. president trump called president putin to condemn the attack and offer condolences. a community joins together to remember a 2-year-old whose life was taken too soon. we were at the vigil in west oak lane. the police organized the event which the boy's family chose not to attend. he was found dead last month. the boy's primary care giver facing a number of charges including concealing the death of a child. >> it's very important we all get some type of closure and that comes through the vigil. >> we are awaiting autopsy results that could reveal the

cause of his death. a big win for the prosecution. frein's videotaped confession will be allowed in trial. he is charged of opening fire killing a state trooper and wounding another. opening statements are scheduled for tomorrow. new information on what caused two septa trolley cars to crash into one another. more than 40 people were injured in the collision. both trolleys were heading west when one rear ended the other. at the jersey shore, engineers have closed a bridge in cape may county. inspects have found a crack in one of the support beams and other beam beams are wearing out. there is no time line for when the repairs will be finished.

residents in the colonial school district will get a second chance to save jobs and school programs. if the second referendum does not pass, more than 170 positions will be eliminated. middle school and freshman sports will be cancelled. parents will be forced to provide basic school supplies and field trips will be eliminated. in washington, the supreme court nomination of neil gorsuch took a step forward. but democrats have enough support now to launch a filibuster this week. republicans are threatening to invoke the nuclear option. that means a simple majority instead of 60 would be needed to confirm. president trump is donating the first three months of his salary to the national parks service. sean spicer presented an

one of the cars is lifted into the air there. severe storms ripped through the south. and that pummelled nine states spawning tornados, fires and a lot of damage. at least five people are dead as a result of the weather and more storms are expected here this week. also tonight, a 14-year-old brutally beaten in the middle of king of prussia mall. >> he says he was randomly attacked. keith jones spoke with the victim new at 11:00. >> what is the last time that you heard of police called to the mall? an eighth grader says he was jumped and it was caught on cell phone video. >> we see a large group walking through the mall and one asks where are we going? a commotion off camera and at least seven people throw punches at a teen's head, back, and chest. someone screams.

the 14-year-old victim too afraid to show his face, his friend by his side they were celebrating his birthday. >> it was scary. i wasn't expecting anything to happen. >> reporter: the eighth grader swears the attack was random. his mother was shocked and angry. >> i got a phone call at 8:00 at night, fear in his voice. you know, mother hears her son say come, now. i just had this feeling. a really bad feeling that something wasn't right. it was horrifying. >> reporter: upper marion police are investigating the fight which was finally broken up by that taller man in the backwards cap. >> it was just showing off, i think. there was no reason to do anything. >> thank goodness there is video and technology helped. hopefully going to help get these kids and teach them a lows

son. >> reporter: keith jones, nbc 10 news. septa's body camera program is paying off. an audit is tallying the effectiveness of the program. this is body camera footage from three separate incidents. the report says that injuries to suspects are down 20%. officer injuries have dropped 30 percent and complaints have decreased 25%. the police input is asked for a $1 billion medical complex in burlington county. and would be a replacement for memorial hospital in burlington county. the project gained approval from the trownship. carryout liquor sales could be expanded in pennsylvania. a bill was passed that would allow carryout spirits. officials estimate it could

bring in more than $100 million in revenue. no jacket required for a run along kelly drive tonight. not even a shirt for that guy. but we are tracking big changes on the way. >> look at the radar. a lot of rain and thunderstorms moving across the area overnight and we could see stronger storms later this week. >> we are tracking it all for you tonight. let's start with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we are getting rain right now and it's heavier in delaware. this is all coming up from the southwest. it's coming in a line and it's coming right at the philadelphia area. it would hit the wilmington area in a couple minutes. upper darby, 11:54. ben salem at 12:32. and that should be the heaviest rain of the night. we're drying out across virginia.

and so that is a sign that the morning rush is not going to be anything like the way is it right now on the radar. there's still plenty of action back to the west. so that's not the end of this weather system overall. the wind is coming off the ocean. it's mild tonight. 56 in allentown at this hour of the night. so we've got some really warm weather ahead. but first we've got to get through this stuff. 1:00 a.m. heavy rain and thunderstorms from allentown and doylestown, mt. holly. and down to the shore. that's really heavy thunderstorms. it is tapering off in philadelphia by 3:00, 4:00, a.m. but the temperatures, 60 degrees. by 6:30 in the peak of the morning rush, a few leftover storms at the shore. generally lighter and scattered showers but that's just round

one. round two is going to be stronger later in the week. and tammy has more on that. >> and colder. we talked about that. potentially this will be the coldest day of the week. it will pull plenty of cold air down from canada. places like chicago could be looking at a rare april snow. this is the north american model. but if it is true it's going to be pulling cold air toward us. we get these winds off the atlantic. so we are going to get cooler temperatures but it is also going to be a more moderate temperature. but watch what happens as we go through thursday. we'll have rain and perhaps strong and potentially severe waert weather in the area. here comes that low. snow and freezing precipitation through pittsburgh.

how much rain are we going the see from all of that? at this point we could see from 1 to 2 inches from all of. that but we have to wait and see how it shakes up. we could be talking about strong or severe storms and looking at the coldest day of the week in the 40s for opening day with the phillies with rain showers. >> but we have we have good news. opening day was a success from pitch one. >> but a different stories for this mets fan. how trouble on the tracks set him off. that's next at 11:00.

big mess today for commuters when a new jersey transit train derailed at penn station in new york and an investigation is underway into what went wrong. and fewer trains will be running
