new bridge in. >> reporter: relacing the bridge would be too costly. >> you have to drive around. no choice in the matter. >> reporter: for gary, it means more time on the road. ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. the man accused of killing a pennsylvania state trooper and lead i leading police on a six-week manhunt will not take the stand. opening statements got underway today in the eric frein trial. >> jim rosenfield joins us with details from the courtroom. >> this guy is an anti-government survivalist. he could face the death penalty if convicted. he's accused of shooting two officers back in 2014. during opening statements today, prosecutors told jurors frein assassinated dixon outside the police barracks. this happened during a shift change. jurors watched surveillance video of that shooting, which showed duction son going down first and then douglas. douglas trying to help dixon before crawling inside for help. the shooting was an attempt to

it's going to be warm. it's going to be very comfortable. it's going to be lovely out there. these temperatures are probably going to hang on for a bit longer and start to dive into the 60s. we'll be in the 50s overnight. but then all eyes are going to be turning off to the west. it's going to be headed our way. potential of some flood iing in areas on thursday and also some damaging winds perhaps even large hail. i'll cover that with the full forecast. >> it's been 24 hours and no arrests after a quadruple shooting that killed three people in north philadelphia. police say they haven't received one typical. two shooters are responsible and more than two dozen rounds were

fire d. it happened on styles avenue just steps from the school. police say the motive for the shooting was an argument, but they can't e elaborate. >> one of the victims had a gun in his pocket and all four victims were known to police for drug and gun crimes. the two suspects got in a small gray suv. philadelphia police say the r robber in this video used the cup in his hand to get what wanted. this is surveillance video from south street in the graduate hospital neighborhood. according to investigators, the man said he had gasoline in that cup and threatened to set the cashier on fire if he didn't empty the register. the cashier sat $20 on the count count counter. the man took it and left. right now investigators are trying to identify a body found in a pond in middletown.

testimony continues in it the trial of three teens accused in the death of a delaware high school student. she died on the bathroom floor at howard high school shortly after she was attacked by three female students. that testimony was delivered by witnesses today at family court. a school employee held the as she lost consciousness. the death toll is rising after a suspected chemical attack. 83 people including 25 children are among the dead. 350 others are injured in that attack. the syrian opposition described it as the worst in the country's six-year civil war.

today's chemical attack is reprehensible and cannot be ignored by the civilized world. e he goes on to blame president obama saying, quote, these heinous actions are a kons kwebs of the past administration's weakness and ir resolution. tonight we are learning more about the man police say is responsible for a deadly subway attack in russia. investigators say a suicide bomber was behind the attack in st. petersburg. it identified hum as a 22-year-old born in kyrgyzstan. authorities say they believe he's linked to radical islamic groups and carried the explosives on the train in a backpack. russians continue to bring flowers and candles to a memorial outside of the subway station where that attack happened. there were similar scenes across the country. along with church services. sky force 10 over moments ago of hundreds of union

president trump and his team have long said there are leak when is it comes to national securi security. >> reports are alleging a leak could be part of those revealing confidential names to the public. >> reporter: national security adviser susan rice under fire and ob defense denying she played politics with the names of trump associates who were caught in foreign surveillance. >> the allegation is that somehow obama administration officials utilized intelligence for political purposes. that's false. >> reporter: in an interview with andrea mitchell, she said she didn't have the power to identify names and e revealed them publicly. >> i leaked nothing to nobody. >> her denial coming one month

denying benghazi was a terror attack. there were statements that ignited years of controversy. part of this georgia bridged by fire last week is scheduled for demolition tonight. the northbound section of the i-85 overpass is heavily damaged when a fire started under the highway. today the department of transportation says reconstruction will be completed earlier than expected in mid-june. to this now. police tackled a woman after a police chase. a woman driving this van drove on sidewalks, lawns, you name it. she was try ing ing to get away it police. . she jumped out of the van and ran. police tackled and arrested her. no word tonight on what started that chase. the national weather service is checking to see if two tornadoes touched down in different parts of the south. the man was flipped by strong winds. in georgia another possible tornado uprooted trees and

it's 76 in atlantic city. 72 in philly. mount pocono at 54. just the rest of the area enjoying spring-like temperatures and this fantastic weather. as far as the sky, we have seen a few high, thin clouds. we have seen a few isolated thunderstorms develop this afternoon. we're picking those up on the radar. you can see that out toward wild pack, we have a shower or storm that's moving by. maybe an isolated thunderstorm there. otherwise it's very isolated in nature across the area. we're continuing to get all of the warmth in here. where it's still climbing with temperatures, we may notch out another degree. what we're watching close ly is this storm system. it's dumping snow in north texas.

this is a very deep trough with cold air. it is going to surge across the country bringing a path of snow that's all the way from texas through, michigan into upstate new york and even western pennsylvania we'll be dealing with snow and snow/rain mix. let's go hour by hour on thursday. we are going to be looking at the wee hours of the morning. no rain yet. potentially we'll hear a clap of thunder. 5:00 in the morning we'll see rain. we'll see the first of some thunderstorms coming through during the morning rush. any thunderstorm potentially could be severe in our area on thursday. . right now we are in the risk of severe weather. and in the upper elevations west of the city, we're going to be looking at the potential for some flooding. so by noon, we have widespreads across the area and some heavy rain. temperatures on thursday only about 60 degrees.

these thunderstorms continue into the night. and then on the backside of all this, we still have rain that has to move through for friday and friday being the home opener. this is what we're look iing ats far as the severe threat. we have a slight risk that's mainly south of the metro area. and that's where at this point, we're talking about gusty winds. further south parts of north carolina and virginia are looking at a tornado threat. not for us at this point. if you get out o the west and north of the city into the upper elevations, the lehigh valley, that where we could see an inch or two of rain. that would constitute some flooding. these are the rainfall totals right now. you can see in philadelphia perhaps not quite an inch of rain on thursday. but to get out there you could be looking at an inch of rain and about the same thing in wilmington. that's why we're concerned about all this. let's take a look at something that might be pleasant. opening day for the phillies, it's going to be blustery.

we'll be hard pressed to make it out of the 40s. mid-40s are possible at this point. we're looking at winds that will be out of the west at 15 to 20 miles per hour. woer going to deal with cloudy skies, broez si, cool, maybe a rain shower, maybe a lult drizzle. let's look at the weekend ahead. saturday looks stellar. if you're going to the game on saturday, you picked the right day. and the same for sunday back into the 60s with sunshine on sunday. we'll talk more about the severe weather threat later on this hour. guys, back to you. drivers, watch out. police are cracking down to make sure you're paying attention behind the whole. we were there as officers headed out to catch distracted drivers. the police chief says distracted driving is a major problem and their job is to protect the community before it's too late. >> we investigated about 2200

let's look outside. out there by cape may in the mid-and upper 70s. it was fantastic across much of the area. you can see some clouds across the city. but look into the distance. that's sunshine and blue skies. so we are going to be looking at a very pleasant evening. . we'll clear out and have mainly clear skies overnight. doppler is sweeping the sky. you can see a few spotty showers out there. it's not heavy rain that's coming down. let's go out here and take a look at what's going on in parts of buck county. were not looking at a lot in the way of rain. what we're going to focus on and this is what you have to prepare for is potential for severe weather. we have the potential for heavy rain. but also we are in the risk of severe weather. it's all because of this large storm system which is going to make its way in our direction.

so we'll see the clouds and before you wake up on thursday, we will be dealing with the rain and the thunderstorms from all of this. let's break down your evening tonight. look at this. we'll be dropping from 72 to 68 at 9:00. 60 degrees. that's not too shabby. we'll talk about the ten-day and that severe weather when i come back president bush. today in court prosecutors called eric frein ab assassin who targeted law enforcement with the hopes of spark iing a revolution. frein is accused of killing a pennsylvania state trooper and injuring another outside the blooming grove par racks in 2014. in a high profile case, the defense strategy is key. for inu sight into what might be going in our breaking news cent center. and police found him hiding

weeks later. you or a defense lawyer how would you defend him? >> i would not defend a guy like this, but where you have someone where you definite ly know this guy is going to be found guilty, there's an overwhelming amount of evidence. what did he do? he sat there and he got innocent people coming out of a bar racks and attacked them ambush style. so really this is about the second phase. he already knows that he's going to be found guilty. but when you look at the dylann roof trial and boston bomber trial, they tried to put up a defense where they were doing their job. but they were trying to gear up for the second phase, which is going to be the death penalty phase. he only spent six minutes on the opening statement. they are going to try to put themselves in the position to argue to a jury later to save that cred can blt to try to ask for them not to give them the

death pnenalty. >> today we learned that frein is not going to take the witness stand. what goes into the decision? >> underneath the law, the defense does not have to put on the defense. they are not required to put on anyone to do anything to present any witnesses or evidence whatsoever. now you know in this particular case this particular defendant has some extreme views about revolutions and things of that nature. the last thing you want to do is put this defendant on the stand wasting the court's time and wasting the jury's time ask put him in a position to spout off things that may really inflame the jury and then come in the sentencing phase after it's a fore gone conclusion he's going to be guilty and ask the jury not to give him the death penalty. here are some of the stories that are making headlines across the county. in kent county, female legislators introduced a bill

you probably heard how aspirin can reduce the risk of a

heart attack. a new study shows it might also lower the risk of dying from cancer. researchers at massachusetts general hospital followed more than 130,000 patients and found those that used aspirin were up to 11% less likely to die of cancer. a new drug may help the lives of patients with advanced melano melanoma. . researchers at the yufr of iowa tested the drug on 60 patients. more than the half the patients saw tumors partially or completely shrink within a year. expert says the findings still need to be confirmed in larger studies. listen to this one. can taking a nap improve your mood? researchers in the united kingdom found that taking a power nap of less than 30 minutes can make you happier. but the survey found taking longer naps doesn't have the same benefit. previous studies have linked several health risks with taking regular naps of an hour or more per day. keep it short. late this afternoon, payless shoe stores announced it is

and then we'll see all of those die off this evening. this is what we're watching. we're watching this system that's dumping snow now in texas. north texas. snow in april. this is what we're going to be watching. we're going to be watching this entire system. i'm going to show you the wide view of what happens. it comes at us day and night over the couple days. dumping snow across parts of the midwest. plenty of snow across michigan. it parks itself just to the west of us. brings us severe weather. mid-50s in the area. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. we'll have another beautiful day close to 70 degrees tomorrow. but tomorrow night, clouds increase. by 3:30 in the morning on thursday, be looking at showers moving in.

we could also have thunderstorms during the morning commute. mi midday and into the afternoon and some of these storms could be severe. we're expecting to see potentially not here, but in virginia and north carolina tornadoes. we have been placed in the of severe weather here in our area. mainly from the metro south. north of the metro, there's some potential for tlooding because this is going to go on all day. as you just saw, we're going to be looking at perhaps some showers during the phillies home opener. we have a first alert for the entire viewing area. we want to make you aware the fact this is for periods of heavy rain for all of us. we'll reevaluate tomorrow. that's south of this area. but perhaps some damaging winds are going to potentially be possible here. we are in the risk of severe weather for thursday. so bear in mind. you can see the yellow is the risk for severe weather.

raising questions about the soda tax and who the added cash is serving. >> the city council wants to make sure the wealth is being shared with the children who need it most. we got a look at what the city's beverage tax is buying. >> what's the concern here?

>> it is that those pre-k spots are going to neighborhoods where they are needed. low income areas where people may not be able to afford private programs. the city wanted to approach this did try to give priority to those areas. but city council members today are pushing administrators to try to fill in any gaps on the map. however, a new lawsuit is putting a hold on any new spots. the students here are new. they started at this preschool in january. . >> 15 of the 20 children in our classroom were not in school and never atnded preschool. and they didn't have access to quality preschool. >> they are here because they got slots in the pre-k program with its controversial beverage tax. in a new report to city council, staff on how it's working reporting that 82% of the slots were awarded to providers in high need neighborhoods. council members today, though, pushed administrators to target

low income areas next year that didn't get many slots this year. >>. if you say that people didn't apply, what's that strategy? what's the long-term plan? >> the chief education officer says they have the data to reach out in those areas of need. but for now, there won't be any additional seats to hand out. the plan was to go from 2,000 slots to 3,000 next year. but that's on hold until a lawsuit over the beverage tax is is resolved. at this pre-k, there's a wait list. . extra seats are in demand. >> we had another classroom we could fill it. >> reporter: that lawsuit is moving forward tomorrow in pittsburgh. and those extra seats, those 1,000 seats they want to put into place this coming year, they are going to set aside u the money for that, but not put them into action until that lawsuit is resolved. live in north philadelphia, nbc 10 news. nbc 10 news at 6:00 is next.

community quiet. three men are dead, but zero p tips are coming in as police hunt for a killer. awe tempted abduction, a stranger grabs a baby in a stroerl. who police are looking for now. >> janitors impact, new at 6:00, the school rallies behind the man they say deserves nationwide re recognition. right now at 6:00, the haunt for two kill canners who shot four people near a school. it happened along style street not far from the school as kids were walking home monday. we learned new information this afternoon. three people were shot dead and as many as 25 shots were fired. so far police have gotten sozer tips from the community. tonight there's a $60,000 reward. good evening, i'm jacqueline london.
