that happens. you have been tracking the rainfall totals and the damage reports are pretty impressive. >> when you have these storms moving at 60 to 65 miles an hour, it's not hard to imagine damage from the winds. that's what we have. loads of damage reports up and down the coast. these are strong wind reports. especially right at the coast itself. here's 53 miles an hour. when you get that kind of a gust, especially when the ground is wet, it's capable of knocking trees over. 54 miles an hour in delaware city. and we have also had some hail reports in burlington county that's more than quarter inch diameter hail. not enough to do a lot of damage. but certainly inconvenient. washington township, also with some hail reports this

federally mandated deadline for positive train control installation. federal records show 95% of amtrak's locomotives are e equipped. the same records show 100% of locate motives and none of new jersey transit's can detect the train slowing technology. >> it we have to be equipped by the mandate, you have to be equip by the mandate. >> reporter: another problem is some rail systems may not be compatible. federal funding is also an issue. there isn't enough to test each system by the 2018 deadline. now the nbc 10 investigators first revealed how krit call positive train control can be for railway safety. we discover ed it missing on track or 188 derailed in may of 2015. the southbound concluded that the technology would have slowed the train and could have saved

of the heavy down pours. right now back here live, we have blue skies and sunshine. that's starting to clear out. the cleanup continue here's. nbc 10 news. now to a scare at a south jersey school. administrator hs to evacuate the building. there was a gas leak this morning. several students and teachers started getting sick. emergency crews found there were higher than normal carbon no mox side levels at that school. they were taken to a nearby school for the rest of the day. trenton police are investigating reports that a 5-year-old special needs student was sexually assaulted on her school bus. it happened march 28th on the girl's way home from the pj hulls school. an advocate blames the district saying there are too many kids ask not enough aids. >> i have parents that are afraid to put their kid on the bus and that's a shame. >> no one has been charged with

but not everywhere. let's take a look at basically what you can expect for the rest of the evening. we're going to be improving. we're watching sort of a dry area in the storm system. we're between the severe weather and strong storms and sprinkles and cooler weather coming in tomorrow. 57 right now. we'll drop down to 53 at 8:00. we'll see more clearing. we have some sunshine out there now. we have winds that will be turning out of the southwest and clear overnight for part of the night and cloud up for tomorrow. 53 will be the temperature at 11:00. we'll drop down into the 40s. especially with the clear skies out there tonight. you'll still need the jacket if it you're going to be out and about. the heavy rain and severe weather and storms that brought the 50 miles an hour wind gusts. small hail and flooding rains. all of that is heading off to the north and the east of us. baltimore still has a few showers. we'll see those swirling around our area. sprinkles are possible through the evening. allentown is just beginning to clear out. bridgewater has a few showers. . you can see the greater

philadelphia area is quiet. redding has a little shower activity there. as we go closer in lehigh, you have some showers. chestnut hill, a few showers. clinton, a few showers. bridgewater a few showers. we head down here. out of maryland and into delaware, we're watching this storm system right here. it has diminished. it was severe earlier today. that's diminished. we're we're not expecting that to cause us trouble. half the nation is covered by it. there's cold enough air to produce snow on the backside of this. we still have to watch all of these spotty showers swirl through. this whole system has to pass us. that's to happen tomorrow. that's why tomorrow is going to be blustery. take a look at this. i think this juxtaposed everything perfectly. we have the heavy rain that's falling. the water has to recede. be aware of that. but look at that. the purple, that's a freeze watch tonight. nearby, very cold air.

not for us, but that's how cold it's going to be will turn off to the south and the west at 9:00. we could see a spotty shower. i showed you that. that's the rotation that's coming through. we will by 1:30 in the morning see clear skies across much of the area. the winds are still going to be gusty. then here come the clouds tomorrow morning at 6:00. clouds and then you can see some of this colder air may out towards harrisburg and the western parts of the state produce a a rain/snow/sleet mix. and then if we head into 9:00 tomorrow morning. a a spotty shower. let's go to game time. spotties around the area. that's why we're seeing bring the rain slicker. we're going to have gusty west winds anywhere from 15 to 20 miles per hour. the high tomorrow, only in the mid-40s. we're going to talk more about that in your ten-day forecast in

right now at 5:30, the heavy rain and strong storms rolled through the region. take a look at that shot. drivers trying to wade through that street there. water covering the road. >> it's usually used as a cut through to bipass and take you to the city. not today. look at that traffic. we have seen a lot of this around town. >> a roof blew off a building narrowly missing some people, but smashed up cars. drew smith is live. what are police saying about this. >> they say it stings like a tornado out here. an hour and a half ago, it was pouring rain. the skies got dark and describes circulating winds. it's an industrial park. union hill, you can see that roof and the damage to it.

you can see a heavy ac unit that was pushed off of where it originally sat. and further down is where that wind pushed the rest of the roof. there are several cars we're told underneath that roof. and it was lucky that nobody was inside there. police told us that it was a security guard who first noticed the changing weather conditions outside. they worked to evacuate the building and everybody was accounted for when they came up here to the higher parking lot. there was a lot of damage to cars out here. employees right now are helping police try to clean up the parking lot to get some of these cars out of here. they are going to be discussing about the damage that the experienced out here. now the roof on this building, we're told, is just a couple years old. it's pretty new. they put it on an existing roof there. a lot of the witnesses say it was windy out here and re1e78ables the tornado.

weather. we showed you temperatures are going to drop off into the 40s. the strongest storms coming through. between noon and 3:00. and that's when we saw the line come through with the gusty winds. damaging winds, pea-size hail and heavy rain. this is the dry portion of the storm system. don't get to married to the sunshine. those storm systems are quite large. this is covering a good part of half of the country. you will see the wrap around showers. we'll see peeks of clear skies

one after another. and delaware city in new castle county. we have had several reports, but not as anything over 70 miles an hour. the amounts of rain generally in the 1 to 3 inch. tammie souza will sew you how nice the weekend is going to be. >> you talked about the hail, down downed trees, how about this? >> sky force 10 over the scene. drew smith was there. the roof came off the building. crushed some of the cars down below. we still haven't seen just how badly the damage is. we have been talking about these fast-moving storms and the fast wind. there's evidence of it here. this is. no one hurt.

but just some evidence of what this storm was capable of earlier today. flooding is a problem, especially on days like today. now a project that should help ease flooding on ocean city streets will start soon. the pumping project was put on hold twice after a contractor who lost the bid. the mayor of ocean city said you can expect to see equipment arrive between 26 and 34th streets very soon. eric frein had an accident while brushing his teeth in prison today. >> neena has the story from pike county. >> appeared in court. there was no obvious sign of injury. he was still wearing his hospital bracelet. took his glasses off, rubbed his head and appeared to close his eyes. the jury was given no explanation as to why the trial got off to such a late start.

multiple sources and parents have said frein hit his head on a sink while brushing his teeth. after being checked out, frein arrived to the court. in the courtroom, testimony focused on the day after the shooting. where brian dixon was killed and trooper alex douglas was shot in the hip. we heard from a man who wanted to stop police. he took his dog for a walk in the woods. that's when he discovered a a jeep. partially submerged in a retention pond. he saw papers a military-style duffel bag and an empty gun case. he then called state police. the defense tried to paint the man out as seeking a reward. he got paid after the shooting for the discovery of the jeep that led investigators to frein.

a man befriended actual students and stayed at their apartment when he knew they were away. the 23 year old is accused of stealing from them. he's charged with burglary, credit card fraud, forgery and theft. police say he was hanging around a lot and think he may have done this before. then there's this. a woman hired as a principal at a kansas high school und underestimated just how smart those students were. >> after she was hired, students who work at the school newspaper started writing a story about her, but didn't realize things were adding up on her resume. they did what all good journalist dos.

and if u put it in motion, there were several strong cells that went through. they are going to be looking to see if indeed perhaps there was a microburst that took place. maybe something else if there was a quick spin above the tornado. there was a significant storm system that went through with gusty winds at that time. straight line winds maybe a weak tornado. we won't find out for at least 24 to 46 hours. just showers. it's wrapping around from harrisburg. they are going to make their way to the philadelphia area. look at the size of this thing through our as we head through the evening hours, most of the rain is confined off to the north. . temperatures drop into the 50s

right now. we may even hit 60 degrees with the sunshine. winds have turned to the south and that's favorable for the warmth. we get to 1:00 in the morning. we'll clear out. we may see clear skies for a bit of the overnight hours. . we'll drop down into the low 40s when you wake up tomorrow morning. mount pocono could see a rain/snow mix tomorrow. we see a few spotty showers around. here we are at 3:00 with spot si showers. if you're going to the game, you're going to need to carry your rain slicker. let's break the game down for you. 47 degrees, if we're lucky. mid-game we're going to be looking at 15 to 20 miles per hour.

part of a roof blown off this building this afternoon. sky force 10 flying over the damage. flying debris crushed nearby cars. fortunately the people are all safe tonight. >> let's get to drew smith live on the scene. >> these winds were so strong. . i'm holding a peace of that roof in my hand. you can take a look at the damage to the building. we're in an industrial park at the top of a hill. and you can see the winds blew in. coming and blowing that roof. also part of the air-conditioning units have been tossed around on top of this building. those winds ramped up around 4:00 today. the sky got really dark, the winds started circulating almost like a tornado out here. some of the roof blew off on to the parking lot around the back

of the building. the company makes technology products. there was a security guard looking out the window while this all happened. no one was hurt here. there's some cant damage to the building as well as employee's cars. . three of them crushed underneath the remains of the roof that blew off. we spoke to a witness whos in one of the industrial buildings here. listen to what she had to say. >> it wassing and you just sea it was like a wind tunnel. >> the roof flew off. >> firefighters have now roped off that area where the roof is sitting on top of heavy cars. we kabt even see the cars. we wanted to take
