pinned as a referendum president trump himself had the political world on edge. there is news this morning the race is heading toward a runoff in june after none of the candidates who vied for the vacant seat received the majority votes needed for a win. >> still this morning boekt the democrat and the president claiming victoriment for more we go to nbc's tracy potts in washington. tell us about the nail-biter. >> reporter: interesting race. so many people in the country outside georgia's 6th congressional district were looking at it. let's look at the results. john ossoff, the 30-year-old political neophyte who ran in this race as a democrat to pickup what has been a traditionally republican seat, it was a near miss for him. he had 48% of the vote. he needed 50 to take the seat outright. the next closest republican in a very crowded race of republicans was karen handel. she got 19% of the vote.

so, about one in five people in that district voted for her. that means the two of them are looking at a runoff in june. this is the seat that was given up by tom price when he came to washington to be the president health and human services secretary as you said. both sides are claiming victory. here's ossoff. >> let me tell you this. there is no doubt that this is already a victory for the ages. [cheering and applauding] so bring it on. [cheering and applauding] because we are courageous, we are humble, and we know how to fight. [cheering and applauding] >> democrats have been painting this as a referendum on president trump who barely won that district by 1%. if they're able to pickup this seat, it will affect the balance here in congress, but also it could give them some momentum

going into congressional elections. by the way, president trump got involved tweeting about this candidate saying now in a tweet after the results came in that he's glad to be of help. >> sure, people all over the country watching this very closely. tracy potts, thank you. still a huge number for a democrat in that state for sure. former president george h.w. bush back in the hospital recovering from a mild case of pneumonia. they said he was admitted on friday due to a persistent cough. doctors discovered and treated the pneumonia which has since been resolved. he is being held for further objector vegas but is sid to be in very good spirits. president bush has had health battles in the past including a two week stint in the hospital back in january. also for pneumonia. >> the manhunt for fugitive steve stephens came to a violent end in erie, pennsylvania. stephens shot and killed himself afternoon a police pursuit yesterday. he is suspected of fatally

shooting a 74-year-old man in cleveland and posting it on facebook. nbc's gutierrez has the story. >> reporter: steve stephens came to a dramatic end here just after 11:00 a.m. >> i was scared and now i'm actually relieved. >> reporter: a worker recognized stephens at this mcdonald's drive through where they said he ordered mcnuggets and fries but they stalled. >> basically they told him it was going to be a minute for his fries. we were trying to make sure she got in contact with the state police. and he didn't want to wait for the fries. >> units psp is behind a white ford fusion on buffalo road. >> reporter: stephens sped off, but after a short chase investigators say he shot and killed himself. >> there are a lot of questions i'm sure that not only the family, but the city in general would have had for steve. >> reporter: police say stephens murdered 74-year-old robert godwin at random in broad

daylight easter sunday and posted chilling video of the crime on facebook. >> she's the reason why this happened to you. >> reporter: where he also blamed his ex-girlfriend for his action. seconds after the blood shed. >> oh, lord he's dead. >> reporter: came the horrified calls for help. >> ma'am, what's your address? >> oh, lord have mercy. oh, my god. >> reporter: but for this 911 dispatcher, it was too late. >> ask him is he breathing. >> is he breathing? not breathing. >> i lost everything i had, man. >> reporter: stephens had no criminal history. he worked for a decade at a mental health agency and was a mentor. as they prepare for the funeral they feel an overwhelming sadness. and she called her father's killer a coward. >> thank you to nbc's gabe gutierrez for that. fresno california is recovering from a day of violence after three people were shot to death. less than a minute at three different locations the victims were described as white men ages

34, 37 and 58. police arrested suspect corey muhammad when they saw him running from the scene. he posted on facebook that he did not like white people and he used the alias quote black jesus. officials say the suspect yelled god is great in arabic as he was being loaded into the police car. investigators believe the shootings had nothing to do with terrorism. >> based on the information that we have been provided and our investigation has shown is that this is solely based on race. >> muhammad had already been wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a security guard at a motel 6 last week. now he faces four counts of murder. >> back in washington, the trump administration is just 1 days shy of its first 100-day mark. the president is taking a victory lap of sorts. >> no administration has accomplished more in the first 90 days that includes on military, on the border, on trade, on regulation, on law

enforcement. we love our law enforcement. and on government reform. >> his comment comes as he signs a new executive order. part of his buy american hire american policy. but it's raising new questions about whether mr. trump's businesses should follow that same message. here's nbc's chief white house correspondent holly jackson. >> reporter: back on the road sounding like he's back on the campaign. >> buy american and hire american. >> reporter: the president signing a new executive order in wisconsin promising to put america first, directing an administration review to tighten up the h 1 b visa program which lets high-skilled workers into the country. that's after president trump has used different programs to bring on foreign workers at his own properties. all of it raising questions for one republican senator at her iowa town hall. >> shouldn't he be the first one to bring his company back and manufacture his products here? >> maybe he puts his money where

his mouth is and bring some of those jobs here. >> reporter: the president has separated himself from his business and so has his daughter, but conflict questions linger. the ap now reporting ivanka trump's business was granted three chinese trademarks, the very same day she joined her father for dinner with the chinese president. >> the question is whether that kind of award of a trademark is a way for the chinese government to curry favor with the president or with the president's assistant ivanka trump. >> reporter: an attorney for ivanka trump tells nbc news she has had no involvement with trademark applications submitted by the business. and with americans talking taxes, president trump is, too. >> our tax reform and tax plan is coming along very well. >> reporter: but that tax overhaul could be over before it begins with democrats warning they won't play ball unless the president releases his returns. >> i think it's going to be hard for him to make people believe

"the new york times" found o'reilly paid out $13 million in settlements to five different women. mr. o'reilly has denied any
