officials say hernandez was found hanged in his cell overnight, in a contributional facility in massachusetts. they transported hernandez to the hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 4:00 a.m. this morning. according to officials, the former football star had attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming it with serio various items. just last friday, the former patriots tight end was found not guilty in the shooting deaths of two men in 2012. but hernandez was serving a life sentence for murder in the case of odin lloyd. hernandez's family has been notified. it's a shocking and developing story. >> miguel, thank you. please, keep us posted. another story overnight. results are in from georgia's hi high-stakes special election, to fill the seat that was tom

price's. this was an early test of president trump's influence. and take a look, the democratic upstart jon ossoff, just short of an outright victory. there will be a runout between him and the second place finisher karen handel. we're going to get some insight by lindsey graham and others on this. we start with kristen welker. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. on the one hand, the white house is breathing a sigh of relief. political newcomer jon ossoff did not get 50% and enough to avoid a runoff. still, ossoff did get close. a big night in georgia for political upstart jon ossoff. >> we have defied the odds. we have shattered expectations.

>> reporter: ossoff got more votes than any other candidate, democrat or republican, in an 18-way race. significant because this district is reliably red. while eatit's not 50% needed to avoid a runoff, it's enough to rattle republicans. karen handel, who had the most votes on the republican side, struck a vote of confidence. >> you're looking at the top vote getter, y'all. >> reporter: the seat up for grabs was once held by gnewt gingrich. president trump got involved in the race. despite major outside money, fake media support, they almost won. trump also recorded a robocall against ossoff. >> only you can stop the liberal democrats. >> reporter: some republicans may be dissatisfied with the direction of their party. >> he has brought the decorum of

the presidency so low, that i cannot support candidates like that. >> reporter: ossoff raised $8.3 million, much from out-of-state donations. an unprecedented number for little-known candidates. some celebrities lending their voices. >> hi. i'm samuel l. jackson. we have to channel this anger into votes at the ballot box. >> reporter: a race in a small district that could have big implications for the president and his party. the runoff will take place in june. when asked for further comment, a white house official referred me back to the president's tweet. it's a race these officials will be watching very closely, as well as the president. willie, savannah, back to you. >> thank you so much. president trump has just orlandoed a review of the iran nuclear deal and whether to kill it. nbc's andrea mitchell is here with that story. >> reporter: good morning,

willie. secretary of state rex tillerson says iran is abiding by the agreement under the obama administration to rein in its nuclear program. and six world powers did not consider because it was more important to stop iran from getting a bomb. in a strong signal, the new administration appears ready to rip up the deal. this morning, the white house talking tough on iran. secretary of state rex tillerson saying the trump administration is weighing whether to break the terms of the iran nuclear deal signed almost two years ago. during the presidential campaign, then-candidate trump called it the worst deal negotiated. secretary tillered admits iran s been holding up its part of the bargain. but iran remains a leading state sponsor of terror through many

platforms and methods. the 2015 deal signed by the u.s. and other world powers restricts tehran's nuclear prom in the lifting of oil and other economic sanctions for ten years. without the deal, experts say, they would have had a nuclear weapon if they wanted within months. israel's prime minister netanyahu has been a fierce opponent of this nuclear deal. but critics say the trump review will anger european allies and raise questions about why the white house wants to risk iran going nuclear, while it is in the middle of a crisis with north korea, which has been arsenal of nuclear weapons. >> a business y inbox. mike pence issued a warning to north korea, just hours after the u.s. naval fleet that was supposed to head towards the korean peninsula in a show of force, was sailing in the

opposite direction. kelly cobiella is in seoul, south korea for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. you said it. vice president mike pence talking about north korea. talking tough. calling it an urgent and dangerous threat. so urgent, in fact, that last week, president trump said he was sending an armada this way as a show of force. now, we're learning that carrier group won't be here for another week. vice president pence on "uss reagan" in japan this morning, with a familiar message for north korea. >> we will defight any attack and meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective american response. [ applause ] >> reporter: "the uss carl vinson" aircraft carrier, used to back up the talk, is heading to the region, as a prudent

measure, the pentagon says. over the weekend, when kim jong-un was showing the world his new weapons, threatening the u.s. and testing a missile, the "vinson," was 3,500 miles away, moving in the opposite direction, to a military drill with australia, despite what trump did last week. >> we're sending an armada. >> reporter: the military threat had the reegion on-dej, with china and russia calling for restraint. late yesterday, the president backed off the tough talk with kim jong-un. >> hopefully he wants peace and we want peace. we have to see what happened. >> reporter: this morning, the vice president said all options are on the table. but no mention from the vice president about the "uss carl vinson," or the confusion surrounding the timing. also this morning, we're hearing from the pentagon, that two jets

were scrambled late monday night to intercept a pair of russian bombers 100 miles off the alaskan coast. the defense department says those russian bombers were in international air space and they acted, quote, very professionally. >> kelly cobiella for us. lindsey graham here this morning. >> a wonderful day. >> a lot to talk about with you. let's start with iran. rex tillerson, the secretary of state, notified that congress is going to review that deal. i know you're not a fan of that deal. the president is not a fan of that deal. if you undo it now, has iran received all of the benefit and we're talking away from what would be the benefit to the u.s. and to the west? >> here's what i would say. they have most of the money or are in process of getting most of the money. you look at the deal when it was signed until now, they've not gotten better. they've gotten worse. they're the largest state

sponsored terrorism. they're backing assad. they help hezbollah. i would put sanctions on the regime for violating the u.n. resolution on missile tests, humiliating our sailors and being a state sponsor of terrorism. >> is that different from the deal? the deal didn't look at the issues of iran's sponsorship of terrorism. >> it was to be a disconnect between the nuclear program. >> let me ask you about "the uss carl vinson." the president said he was sending in an armada. and yet, it was 3,500 miles away and in the indian ocean. >> let's not get tweets in the navy. >> how does that happen? a lot of americans wonder how in the world does that happen? >> i don't know. obviously miscommunication. but they're headed in the right direction. the fact that the vice president goes to the dmz and looks across the border and says to the north

koreans, we're not going to allow you to send a missile to our homeland. i talked to the president about this topic. i said, do you want on your resume that during your presidency that north koreans could hit the american peninsula with a nuclear well on top of it? he said, absolutely not. >> what did you suggest to the president he do, yobeyond putti pressure on china. >> tell china, if they don't take care of it, we will. if china can't stop the regime from building a missile that can hit the american homeland, we would do everything, including diplomatic sanctions and military strike to stop the missile program. do you really want north korea to have a missile that can hit california with a nuclear weapon on top of it? 20 years ago, north korea didn't have any nuclear weapons. every republican and every democrat has screwed up north korea. they're close to getting a missile to hit the homeland. now is the same to stop. >> for a pre-emptive strike?

ominous sign for things to come? >> that district is changing. the congressman won by 20 something points. trump won by a point and a half. this guy got clinton's vote. i think you see a casting in this race, hollywood versus georgia. but the south is changing. atlanta is changing. there's districts like this all over the country, that are getting more moderate. and i think karen will do a good job. she's probably the best republican we could have chosen. i like her chances to win this seat. but this should be a wake-up call for the republican party in the south. >> senator lindsey graham, thank you. well-wishes are pouring in for former president h.w. bush. he is recovering in a hospital after a mild case of pneumonia. kerry sanders has more for us. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. former president george h.w.

bush is at methodist hospital for continued observation. his spokesman says he is just fine. president george h.w. bush is in good pirt conspires this morning. the 92-year-old admitted last friday, after a cough prevented him from getting proper rest. it was determined he had a mild case of pneumonia, which was treated and has been resolved. he's now being held for further observation, while he regains his strength. back in january, the former president spent two weeks in the hospital with pneumonia. for a time, he was in the icu and put on a ventilator to help him breathe. at the same time, his wife, barbara bush, spent five days in the same hospital for bronchitis. the pair had just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. recovering enough to take part in a pregame coin toss at the super bowl in houston. and earlier this month, the 41st president was visited by his former rival and now close

gabe gutierrez is in erie, pennsylvania, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was a mcdonald's employee who recognized the so-called facebook killer at this drive-through. a remarkable end to the manhunt that gripped the nation. this morning, investigators are trying to piece together how steve stephens spent nearly 48 hours on the run before he took his own life. the manhunt for the killer is over. but for robert godwin's family, the pain is not. >> i want to see him go to trial because god awful what he did to my brother. >> reporter: police say stephens randomly chose godwin and murdered him, posting the horrifying video on facebook. >> he took all of the dignity he had. we all know we going to die. but not like that. not for the world to see. >> reporter: the manhunt's violent end came 100 miles north of cleveland, in erie,

pennsylvania. a sharp-eyed employee at this mcdonald's drive-through recognized stephens. the manager said the suspected killer ordered mcnuggets and fries. but workers stalled his order and called 911. >> it was going to be a minute for his fries. wanted to make sure the proper people were contacted. >> reporter: stephens sped off. surveillance video showing his car fleeing the scene. >> the unit's psp is behind a white board. >> reporter: after a short chase, he took his own life. the 37-year-old had no criminal history but had recently filed for bankruptcy. >> i lost everything. i lost everything i had, man. >> reporter: in a video rant, he blamed an ex-girlfriend for making him snap. >> he was a sweet man at heart. >> reporter: his friend, jason, says stephens called him just minutes before the murder. >> he told me to call him right back once i saw the facebook post. i attempted to call him back and he did not answer.

shark. there's a major development in the sexual harassment schedule surrounding fox news star bill o'reilly. cynthia mcfadden is here. cynthia, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. there are suggestions the network's biggest and bank rl star could be gone for good. while o'reilly is on a plann en vacation, the board of fox news is having a meeting that is supposed to be the topic. after a scandal that has sparked protests and sent advertisers fleeing. >> caution, you are about to enter the "no spin zone." >> reporter: it could with game over for bill o'reilly at fox news. sources say the host, on vacation and off the air for the last week, after bombshell sexual harassment allegations surfaced, could soon be forced out at fox. >> forces are telling me that the murdoch family is inclined to let bill o'reilly go and not return to the air on fox news.

and i'm hearing that the two sons are pushing for bill o'reilly's exit. but their father, rupert murdoch, is resisting. >> what do we want? >> fire o'reilly. >> reporter: calls to fire o'reilly picking up steam. protests outside of fox headquarters in new york. now, another woman, a former clerk at fox is coming forward with new allegations, that o'reilly sexually harassed her for months. >> she said he would grunt like an animal. he would call her hot chocolate. she's african-american. >> reporter: fox news has not commented on the latest allegations. but more than 60 advertisers are speaking loud and clear, pulling their ads from "the o'reilly factor." the anchor's downward slide starting after "the new york times" reported millions of dollars in settlements have been paid out to five former staffers. another accuser, frequent fox guest, wendy walsh, o'reilly

[ yelling ] >> reporter: than a week after dr. david dao lost two teeth, a broken nose and sinus injuries on a united flight, the airline is ramping up its apology tour. >> we heard from oscar munoz, apologizing. >> reporter: ceo oscar munoz, on a conference call with investors. says even though the investigation isn't complete, no one including him, is being fired. >> it was a system failure across various areas. there was never a consideration for firing an employee. >> reporter: dr. dao's attorney says, quote, i'm not even a little surprised. on twitter, more backlash with #boycotunitedairlines. and just paid an extra $50 per person to avoid flying united. >> not even if they give me $10,000, i would not get on their flight. >> i don't see myself flying

united. not ever again. >> reporter: with so few airlines today, there often isn't another airline to choose. >> dulles airport is a hub for united. if i choose not to fly united, i don't go anywhere. >> reporter: on tuesday, united stock lost another 4%, despite good first quarter earnings. since a week ago today, the stock has lost more than $1 billion in value, branding veterans call last week's incident a p.r. disaster of epic proportions. and senior united employees tell nbc news, the airline is reeling. united has taken several immediate steps to contain the fallout. no longer will it bump customers for employees less than an hour before a flight or once a customer is seated. other merrill airlines making s announceme announcements. will unite's p.r. debacle mark a change in the way airlines treat their customers? in 2016, all airlines combined bumped 40,000 passengers.

it's way beyond ice cream. we're back, now. 7:45 with a story that will probably outrage a lot of parents across the country. >> it certainly will. a lot of day-care centers offer live video so you can check in throughout the day. one mom in texas decided to do just that. and she witnessed the unthinkable. you can hear audible gasps as it's happening. an 18-month-old boy is pushed and thrown to a mat on the floor, by a day care worker. caitlin gilmore was the toddler's mother. she was on a lunch break, watching a live stream of her son at the children's courtyard when it happened. within seconds, it was racing there. co-workers recording the incident. the day care worker is 22-year-old jasmine lexis torres.

she is now free on $10,000 bond. >> she had no prior history. there was no incident. no concern as far as a flight risk. and she had been cooperative with us. >> reporter: the children's courtyard operates 55 centers in 4 states. texas state records show, the plano center has been cited for 29 deficiencies, nine of those rated high. state officials report all of the deficiencies had been corrected. a statement from the children's courtyard reads in part, we have strict policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-will of our children. we don't tolerate deviation from those standards. upon being aware of the situation, we immediately notified the authorities. the children's courtyard facebook page exploded with outraged comments. made me so apg ngry, i can't put into words. grown adults roughing up kids. what is wrong with you? the owners of this facility

innovation is about to become "today's next big thing"? we will reveal our first finalists. we'll meet the new round of contestants who brought ways to simplify laundry to playing with your dog. we fbegin with the stunning suicide of patriots star aaron hernandez. i'll miguel almaguer. hernandez was found hanged in his cell overnight. medical personnel attempted to perform life-saving techniques. they transported him to the hospital where hernandez was pronounced dead just after 4:00 a.m. this morning. according to officials, the former football star had attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with, quote, various items. no suicide note was found. just last friday in a boston courtroom, the former patriots tight end was found not guilty

in the murder and shooting deaths of two men back in 2012. but the 27-year-old was serving a life sentence for murder in the 2013 killings of odin lloyd. massachusetts state police are on-scene. hernandez's family has not been notified. it's a stunning fall from grace, from a football star that was recruited out of college, and quickly made million. hernandez, again, found dead early this morning. police say they are still investigating. officers are on-scene at the hospital and at the prison cell. investigators say their investigation could take quite some time, as they try to piece that all together. hernandez was in a single secel not with the general population but was alone in his cell. police in fresno, california, says racial hatred drove a gunman to kill three on tuesday. gaudi schwartz talks about the system that was used to locate

that suspect. >> reporter: the founds of the alleged shooting spree, captured by fresno police. >> we're getting reports of multiple gunshot incidents. >> i heard gunshots. >> reporter: within minutes, dispatch call s flooding out. >> another victim over by the catholic church. >> reporter: police pinpointing the gun location with a gunshot connection system. officers were able to use maps in their car to see where the shots were coming from. 16 rounds fired in total. three people dead. police seen here capturing a man named cory ali mohammed, who began his shooting rampage after he was named the prime suspect in the murder of a security guard last thursday. >> he made a decision he was not going to go to jail for shooting a security guard. he was going to kill as many people as he could. >> reporter: investigators say mohammed first opened fire on a utilities truck, killing zachary

randalls, a newly hired customer service representative. it was his first ride along on the job. police say mohammed killed two more people in front of a catholic charity before he was caught. offering this confession to officers. >> i did it. i shot them. i said, you guys are looking for me. >> reporter: on facebook, police say mohammed had many anti-white and anti-government posts. but police are not calling this a crime of terror but a crime of hate. >> our investigation has shown, is that this is solely based on race. and it has nothing to do with terrorism. >> reporter: mohammed, now facing four counts of murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. for "today" gadi schwartz nbc news. president trump was keeping a close eye on results from the special election in georgia. jon ossoff fell just short of

of opening day for the film festival. this year, it's not just films. you're getting into video games, television. so, if it's on a screen, it's at the festival? >> yes. >> if it's a good story, we're platform agnostic. stories are happening -- good stories are all over the place, whether you see them on netflix or hulu. video games have some of the most amazing nonlinear story telling. we're going to show all of it. everything is changing. how an audience reacts and wants to participate. that's changed. you know that from, you know, your tweet board over here. >> i know you're a big video gamer. you're very excited about that. >> yes, i am. >> about that part of the festival. how has the business changed, the landscape changed, since you started in 2002, in terms of streaming, netflix, amazon, hulu, video on demand, people not going to theaters at much? >> even i can say it's changed a

lot. she can give the details. >> it didn't exist. it didn't exist. iphones didn't exist in 2002. things like uploading, downloading. we didn't do any of that. it did not exist. >> but at the same time, it's not like the parts have gotten worse. if anything, there's an explosion of material available for somebody in your line of work. >> there is. and that's the good part about it. the format, watching something on a little screen like this, as opposed to watching something in the theater is a different experience. they work but don't work. there's a lot i don't know. if you watch a comedy, you want to watch it with an audience. i don't imagine watching a comedy on a little screen like an iphone or something. >> jane, what's the one film we will walk out of this year's film festival talking about? what's the big draw? >> well tonight, it's clive davis and the music of his

years. that will be a spectacular evening. it really is. clive is a cultural icon. and the artists he worked with from aretha franklin, bruce springsteen, simon and garfunkel. it's quite extraordinary. and afterwards, there will be a little concert. a few of clive's friends will show up. tickets are available. >> i think tickets are not available for a rare godfather reunion. >> true. >> who is coming? is this hard to talk you into? or were you for it? >> it wasn't -- it -- francis was not too inclined to want to do it. he's been asked a lot. but i said, come on. let's try and do it this one time. it will never happen. radio city, it will be great. blah, blah, blah. and he was great about it the he said, okay. and the rest of the cast said they would do it, too. >> once francis is in, everybody is in.

>> you can watch a live stream of the conversation that will happen afterwards with everyone on facebook live. >> you're screening the movie in the theater, correct? in a theater setting. >> one and two. >> one and two, yes. >> are you excited to see it in that way again? >> yeah. i'd like to see it. i'll come in and see parts of one and two. i don't want to -- the other times when we had "good fellas" and "king of comedy" and the other one -- >> "taxi driver," we had the interviews during the screening. so, we couldn't get the experience. this time i want to. >> you two are busy working together. you have "wizard of lies" coming out, the story of bernie madoff. and a lot of people are excited about "the irishman." martin scorsese, you, joe penitentiary chi. >> we're trying to get joe. >> the madoff part. what was it like to step into his shoes? >> it was interesting. the one thing i have always felt

before i did the movie, was that the sons never knew anything about it. and once i did it, i realized that i felt even more they didn't know -- had no idea. that's why they had a tragic -- the whole family, ending, one killed himself and the other one had a relapse of a cancer that had been supposedly cured. and so, it's very sad for them. the kids. >> it's a story that we're looking forward to seeing you portray on the big screen. thank you very much for being here. both of you in the tribecca film festival kicks off today. coming up next, a historymaking new girl scout troupe and what makes it so special. first, this is "today" on nbc. back at 8:39, when you hear girl scouts, projects come to mind. >> one of the newest troupes is looking at overcoming adversity. morgan radford joins us this morning. >> reporter: this troupe is a little bit different. they're the first of their kind right here in new york. troop 6000 is united by how they play and how they support each other and how they live. >> at all times. >> reporter: troop 6000 is just like any other girl scout troop. >> we're all girl scout sisters. we're all a pack. >> reporter: they dance. ♪ >> reporter: they color. they pledge to make the world a better place. but unlike their fellow future leaders, these girls are all homeless. >> do you think people treat you differently because they know you're in a shelt center. >> no. >> reporter: do you do all of the same things that the girl scouts get to do? >> it feels like you're not alone.

>> reporter: feels like you're not alone, why? >> it shows you're not the only one that has the same problem. >> reporter: run out of the sleep-inn, a motel turned makeshift shelter in queens, families here share tiny beds. like the children of single mother giselle burgess. >> i felt ashamed. i felt like i let them down. >> reporter: that's why she wanted something for her kids to look forward to. so, she started the girl scout troop in february. with the help of the department of homeless services. how do programs like this help to solve the problem? >> shelter used to be three hots and a cot. now, we have 70% of the shelter system is families, we have to help children not back in the shelter system when they become adults. >> reporter: troop 6000 is the first in new york city, designed for homeless girls. there's 22 members. >> our mission so give girls of courage, confidence and character. >> reporter: the number 6, setting them apart from the

troops in the city's five boroughs. putting these trail blazers in a class by themselves. >> if you see a girl with 6000 on, it makes you -- we've gone through the same thing. >> reporter: their duties in the scouts helping highlight their determination, even when things get tough. >> there's one thing you wanted me to know about your girl scout troop, what would it be? >> that we all share. >> reporter: all share? >> everybody is equal. >> reporter: everybody is equal. >> we all act like we're real sisters. >> reporter: real sisters. >> oh. >> real sisters, guys. the new york chapter covers the costs associated with troop 6000, the patches, the vests and the membership fees. they're accepting donations to expand their program across new york. >> if you're having a bad day and saw that piece, you're having a good day. that was beautiful. >> yeah. >> morgan, thank you so much.
