jersey and delaware for most of the morning and you see the lehigh valley and burkes county and this is also light rainfall and a heavy rainfall is staying to the south. this first line of showers moving through as expected and then a break. you might see a sprinkle or two for much of the day and later this afternoon as we head into the evening commute. all of this will be moving into our area and it will be a dreary day today with occasional rain. rain showers, 53 degrees right now in philadelphia, and up to 54 in the suburbs and we're waiting for rain in many of the neighborhoods and notice the clouds that have taken over in the lehigh valley as we see some sunshine to start with. near 60 degrees at 5:00 this afternoon and showers eventually moving into the entire area. mainly just light rainfall for today, there's a potential for heavier downpours with the system and it's going to be around for days and a look at when you can expect those when i come back with the hour by hour

forecast. philadelphia police are looking for the person who shot a teenager in the eye. sky force 10 over the scene on lindberg boulevard in southwest philadelphia just after 7:00 a.m. and police tell us a 17-year-old boy was shot one time in the left eye. he was taken to children's hospital of philadelphia where he is in critical condition. so far there are no arrests. a suspect is under arrest following a deadly shooting in philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene on east tenth street in germantown where a man shot and killed a man on wednesday night. police say they captured the suspect as they ran from the home. officers recovered a gun, and they believe it is the murder weapon. investigators say an argument led to the gun fire. happening today, a new round of nfl draft road closures is hours away and it will impact the commute for many drivers. this is a live look right now thea the draft stage, still under construction there in front of the art museum at 7:00 tonight and traffic on the parkway from 20th street up to the art museum will be shut down and we also want to let you know

were unconscious when their car crashed. medics took them to the hospital and working to find out their condition. the child was not hurt. we are also in touch with authorities to learn about specific charges in this case. >> in north jersey, 40 people are sick, possibly because of synthetic marijuana. newark police say they were tipped off last week when they responded to a person foaming at the mouth. they got a dozen similar calls with some people going to the hospital. officers arrested two men on possession charges. authorities are looking for the source of the drug. the chemical can cause seizures, hallucinations and vomiting. we're learning more about the weekend marijuana event where nearly two dozen people were arrested. the philly smoke session was organized on social media. police first busted the event at a frankfurt warehouse because more than 200 people showed up creating a fire and safety hazard in the building and

police officers confiscated 50 pounds of marijuana, $50,000 and four guns. in south jersey, police in camden county are investigating after someone found a body floating in the river. it was in the water near admiral wilson and baird boulevard yesterday. police have not released information about the person's i.d. or a possible cause of death. happening now, the pennsylvania state supreme court holding a hearing to decide whether to overturn appeal denials from abu-jamal. his supporters plan to demonstrate during that hearing. abu-jamal was sentenced to death for killing daniel faulkner in 1981. a federal appeals court later changed the sentence to life without parole. also happening now, the penalty phase of eric frein's murder trial has been delayed. we're trying to find out what is causing that delay. frein's family ties to be examined today. the jury that convicted frein last week of killing one state trooper and wounding another in 2014 will decide if he should live or die even though there is

a moratorium on the death penalty in pennsylvania. frein's defense suggested they will face questions about how much influence his father, a retired army major, had on the gunman. did you feel the earth move this weekend? people living in lancaster sure if the an earthquake shook. the united states geological survey say it was a minor 2.3 magnitude earthquake. that is similar to a rumble you would feel from a passing truck. [ honking ] you are looking at dozens of bike riders pedalling along philadelphia's vine street expressway yesterday. someone shot this cell phone video from the opposite lane of the highway. most of the cyclists appear to be teenagers and in case you were wondering, bicycles are not permitted on freeways in pennsylvania without penndot permission.

president trump is counting down the first 100 days of his administration. he has a busy week with the government shutdown looming and work to be done on health care and tax reform. nbc's kristen welker has more on the week ahead for the president. >> reporter: with donald trump's presidency approaching the 100-day, ma, trk, the presidentd his aides are fulfilling a triumphant night. >> he's fulfilling promises at a breakneck speed? with 45% of americans, he's off to a poor start. mr. trump's job approval rating now stands at 40%, the lowest for any president at the 100-day mark in the history of the poll. still, a new abc news/washington post poll shows president trump is holding on to his base with 96% of trump voters saying they'd vote for him again. on twitter, the president calling the new polls very good considering that much of the media is fake and almost always

been going on for most of the morning and you've got a dreary, damp view and no sunshine there. that's really keeping the temperatures cooler today because the winds at 7 miles an hour in philadelphia and stronger in wilmington at the shore. up to 16 miles an hour in new jersey. the temperatures have been climbing and most of the area will koos off into the 40s overnight and now it's in the low 50s for philadelphia. the rain has yet to get going and 58 degrees in the lehigh valley and we've seen showers in the suburbs and not every neighborhood has seen it just yet and these numbers were in the 40s and they've not seen a huge climb, but they are warming up. 54 in audubon, mount laurel and lumberton is at 53 degrees and 53 for robinsville and hopewell township and the clouds will stay with us and rain will be on and off. so we're not going to see a huge warm-up and philadelphia topping out near 60 degrees and as we go

into the evening hours and occasional showers. the steady rain is in burkes county right now and a few showers moving through philadelphia right now. these are light showers and you see much of the area is dry and we will get a break with whatever is falling right now before more showers move off this afternoon, and they'll stay offshore and if we get some heavier downpours, those are most likely to go tomorrow. at 6:00 this evening and rain for the parts home in much of the area and we'll see some rain into south jersey, as well and allentown, most likely dry at 6:00 tonight, but showers will be on tonight and look at that the steadier rainfall and there is the potential for downpours, not at 8:00 in the morning and there's a large system that will be with us not only today, but

11:30 tomorrow earn poing and we'll be tracking heavier downpours and a good chance of pretty good downpours. this is 5:30 tomorrow oofrn and there could be some showers continuing into wednesday morning. we're starting off with clouds and showers. 60 degrees this afternoon and cool are and the wind will be stronger and the potential for heavier downpours tomorrow. 58 degrees and showers into wednesday morning, but not all day wednesday and what breaks the sunshine and the afternoon and look at warm-up into the 7 ons on wednesday and it's a warm-up that continues for the end of the week. in fact, turning summerlike timed perfectly for the nfl draft and it could be a warm 80s for thursday, friday and saturday and the next round of showers comes in for sunday, monday and possibly into tuesday. we're drawing out next wednesday, back to normal temperaturewise, that is, with a high of 70 degrees wednesday afternoon. erin? >> bill, thank you. we have important health news this morning for

this is nbc 10 news. a new study suggests prostate screening guidelines may need to be revised for high-risk african-american men. research shows more than one-third of black men developed prostate cancer with no symptoms and they progress more quickly than their white peers. black men may need to be screened at a younger age and more frequently than the general population. >> here's a reason to jump on that bicycle this spring, you may live longer. a new study finds that cycling or walking to work reduces the risk of death from all causes.

bill henley is here with your most accurate forecast. bill? >> we are light rainfall and nothing more than that. these showers will be on and off and we've seen that in wilmington and gray skies overhead and that's what will be staying with us all day long and the testimony temperatures have been climbing in the 50s in wilmington and it will be upper 50s this afternoon at best. you are more likely to see warmer conditions farther to the north. there is the rain moving through philadelphia. you see, it is going to take a break shortly in wilmington. there's a pretty good break here before the next round moves in for this afternoon. so it's not going to be all day that you will need your umbrella, but you'll want to keep it with you just in case, but the showers are just moving into southern delaware will be here for the evening commute and the showers will continue this evening and through the day tomorrow and even into wednesday, as well. now 54 degrees in the suburbs and delaware, 53 degrees and northeasterly winds at 13 miles per hour and that's a breeze flowing in philadelphia at 8

video from the opposite lanes of the highway. most of the cyclists appeared to be teenagers. bicycles are not permitted on freeways in pennsylvania without penndot's permission. and just in to nbc 10, a delay in the sentencing phase for convicted cop killer eric frein in pike county. we are told frein is refusing to communicate with his attorneys and two sheriff's deputy his to physically hold him up to bring him into court. the attorneys are pushing the judge to hold a competency hearing as early as today because of concerns for frein's mental state. he was convicted last week of murdering pennsylvania state police corporal dixon and murdering alex douglas. we have nbc 10 crews in the courtroom and we'll bring you updates later on today. happening today, we are just hours away now from a new roundful nfl draft road closures and it will impact the commute for many drivers. this is a live look at the draft stage coming along and still under construction in front of

stay open until 24th street. you will also still be able to drive eastbound on spring garden street from 31st to 24th street as well and these are other road closures and this is very important and what you need to know. traffic from mlk and spring garden street will have to exit on 24th street. as of tomorrow, 21st street will be closed from wint tore spring garden street with local access to pennsylvania avenue. that will be a great alternate tip to avoid all of these road closures for the nfl draft. in terms of mass transit we are seeing a line of road closures for septa busses as well as regional rail. for more information download the nbc 10 app that will help you bypass the local closures as well as detours. we'll take a look one last time at the vine street expressway for the 611 exit. we're doing okay. a lot of these majors in terms of the travel speeds have rebounded back into the 60s. safe traveling.

this? she wanted to run away and she wanted to leave, and he didn't want her to go alone and so he went with her so that he could know that she was safe. >> reporter: the 15-year-old and former teacher were found more than 2,000 miles away in a remote cabin in northern california with no electricity and running water, a camping stove, some food, toilet paper and two beer cans. >> she was obviously traumatized by the whole incident including the takedown, but she seemed to be in good health. >> daphne quinn says she does not defend nor condone what her brother did. >> i think he would like to get his family back, but i think it just hasn't hit him yet that that's not going to happen. >> reporter: the thomas family lawyer says the 15-year-old is now in a safe location and is being evaluated and treated by mental health experts. gabe gutierrez, nbc news, columbia, tennessee. defense secretary jim mattis is in afghanistan today. mat sis in kabul to assess

a 4-year-old girl seen falling out of the back on to a highway. >> it was unbelievable. >> reporter: as the car slows down, the girl lies motionless. driver ryan siampoli and another motorist rushing to her aid. once i picked her up and put her in my arms it was heartbreaking and she had this horrified look on her face. i had to not think about my family, my children and just focus on her. >> reporter: siampoli says he was at the right place at the right time and as a volunteer firefighter the 35-year-old would never normally move a trauma patient, but in this case he had to make a quick decision for her safety. >> i couldn't risk further damage to a vehicle by hitting her or one of us or any of the other bystanders on the scene, and i had to take action and get her out of the road. >> siampoli says the driver of the bus unaware of what happened returned about 15 minutes later. the young girl was rushed to the hospital where she was treated

joining us to tell us more about the weekend's event, the forest theater are the ceo manu sedarti and dancer maria con ststantino chapin. for those that don't know, tell us about it. >> today we're serving over 1,000 households in the neighborhood, 21 meals a week and giving them a prescription diet for them to win the fight against their illness and we do it mainly by a volunteer organization and we're 36 employees, but we have 3500 volunteers and every day over 100 in our kitchen making it all possible. >> we're looking at these beautiful performances. >> i think every year it's something very different. i think what you can expect is something fun and light and at the same time really special and heartwarming because of the cause.

the dancers get really into it because it's a chance for an arts organization to actually give back. so that can be really special and the dancers are the beens who put it together. so that's a fun twist that we don't usually get to be hands on with. >> how did the partnership begin? how did you get together? >> 25 years ago, the dancers and members of the community and the founding members came together and the story goes after talking it out they said we just need to shut up and dance and so manu was an hiv-aids organization at the time and they partnered and we've been so fortunate over 25 years to have hundreds of thousands of dancers volunteer their time to make this night incredible? how will the proceeds from the event benefit folks in need and what other projects do you have planned for the weeks and month ahead? >> this event is one of the largest fund raisers of the year and we'll raise $150,000 and tickets, there are only a couple hundred left and it will be a

thanks to the winds coming in off the ocean and inland, we can get up to 60 in philadelphia and not a quick warm-up and we're making slow progress and 54 and westmount areas 55 degrees and the trend is for warmer weather after we cool down tomorrow. look at the temperature surge at the end of the week and the normal temperature for this time of year is 67 degrees and we'll be past that wednesday afternoon and summerlike heat for thursday, friday and saturday that will get us into the weekend, but maybe not through it. i think it will turn cooler on sunday. this is what we're dealing with so far this morning and light showers have moved through delaware and much of south jersey and now they're moving through philadelphia and some steady rain now in burkes county and upper montgomery seeing a few raindrops and it's starting to spread through allentown and nothing, but light rain here and steady rain to the south with thunderstorm activity staying offshore and downpours possible for us tomorrow. this is a system that's

extending into georgia. some heavier downpours in north carolina and south carolina. those will be coming into our area tomorrow afternoon most likely. so we'll get a pretty good amount of rain from this. about a quarter of an inch by philadelphia and half an inch in dover and just over a quarter of an inch at 10:00 tonight and that's on and off showers during the day today and showers in evening, as well. on and off showers overnight tonight and by tomorrow morning we're not looking at a lot more rainfall in the area. egg harbor could see more than a half inch on the ground than that and that's the total for today and overnight tonight. watch what happens as we go through the day tomorrow. here comes the heavier rain. that's 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. some downpours topping an inch of rain in avalon and closing in on two-thirds of an inch in philadelphia at that hour and at 5:00 tomorrow afternoon we've still got rain in the area that continues into the evening hours and it will top an inch of rain

in philadelphia and westchester and pottstown and more than two inches of rain is possible at the shore. yes, you'll need your rain gear today, tomorrow and into wednesday. stays cool today and chillier tomorrow, 49 in the morning and 58 degrees in the afternoon and once we get the sunshine and the temperatures take off and it's looking unusually warm, timed perfectly for the nfl draft and we'll be here through saturday and come sunday that's the next chance for showers and for sunday, we could see showers and possibly a thunderstorm that continues into monday and the showers taper off tuesday and the sunshine returns on wednesday. we'll be right back.
