assignment in amman, jordan traveling with the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. craig, we'll talk to you in a bit. and dylan dreyer here as well on this busy saturday morning. >> another busy news morning. right to our top story -- president trump in saudi arabia this morning. we actually have a live picture of the president with saudi leaders right now. he is trying to hit the reset button on his troubled presidency, but that's not going to be easy with a series of bombshell reports dropping while on air force one, flying overseas. nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson traveling with the president inside saudi arabia with more. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, jeff. good morning to you, and at this moment, president trump is at that ceremony with the royal saudi court. we are told he didn't get much sleep on a flight on air force one landing in riyadh but got a spectacular greeting. seven jets streaking through the sky with kim salman joining the president in his limo on his way

back to the hotel. despite the warm welcome here in saudi arabia, it was a different vibe back in washington where the president was facing new questions about why he fired fbi director james comey with new word now that comey himself will testify publicly in front of the senate. the president may be in saudi arabia today, bumt he cannot escape the shadow of russia. president trump touching down in saudi arabia this morning -- >> very happy to see you. >> reporter: williamed with coffee with the king, but even thousands of miles from the white house, his recent controversies have followed him here. a new explosive report from the "new york times" says the president told russian officials in the oval office last week the fbi director he'd just fired was crazy, a real nut job, and that dismissing james comey relieved great pressure on the president, because of the fbi's russia investigation. the report fueling suspicion the president fired comey because of that investigation. the white house not disputing

the account but saying, by grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into russia's actions, james comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with russia. comey set to testify publicly after memorial day on capitol hill, but now an intensifying spotlight on the white house. government sources familiar with the latest development say the actions of a current white house official, who wasn't named, are now under investigation. >> that's important, because there's been a lot of talk of former trump associates or advisors, but now we're told that the investigation actually reaches into the white house. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson, attorney general jeff sessions and adviser and son-in-law jared kushner have already acknowledged contact with russian officials. the white house says as the president has stated before, a thorough investigation will confirm no collusion between the campaign and any foreign entity. these domestic crises coming as the president begin as critical

overseas trip, the first of his presidency. diplomatic land mines at every step. today he'll meet with key middle eastern leaders before a speech tomorrow aimed at the arab world with a message -- unite against islamic extremism. then it's israel, the vatican, brussels and sicily. five countries, nine days. no room for error. >> it doesn't take him away from the drama at home and accomplishing any easier when he travels, either. >> reporter: president trump is joined on this trip by his wife melania and daughter ivanka. neither of whom wore head scarves as all local women here do. remember, that is not unusual. most western visitors don't cover their hair but it's drawn attention since 2015. donald trump treated saudis were insulted when michelle obama didn't wear a scarf. and bring in former foreign policy adviser to senator rand

paul now an nbc analyst and "time" analyst and also, now an msnbc justice and security analyst. good morning to you both. >> thanks for having us. >> matt, start with you. your reaction to the "washington post" story. a senior member of trump's white house team is under criminal investigation. if true what does that mean and have investigators found evidence of wrongdoing? >> it means they found evidence that makes him suspicious of wrongdoing by the senior adviser. what we can read from this is that the underlying investigation whether there were links between trump campaign associates, people close to the president, and the russian government, and whether with those links there was coordination to steal the election nap is accelerating dramatically and not only reaching into people from the campaign, but now getting close to people in the white house. what that means going forward is that there will be people from the white house likely subpoenaed to come of it before a grand jury, asked to turn over e-mails and other documents and

extremely disruptive to the functioning of the white house and the senior staff. >> i want to talk about this "new york times" bombshell. it landed as the pret pred wsid flying on air force one. p that the president told the russians james comey was a nut job. poor judgment or more significant? >> absolutely staggering that you have the president of the united states insulting one of his former top officials to his russian counterparts, but eveningen, you know, another -- it's incredible to me the amount ofleaks comes from the white house, unprecedented and show the discontent within his own administration and within career officials. >> we should mention the white house does not deny the overall theme of that? >> their defense, that president trump -- building a defense that president trump needed to fire

jim comey to pursue foreign policy goals. this makes me think white house lawyers are studying up on impeach thement there is credence to that just because trying to lay a broader argument. >> follow-up on that, and matt, what jeff was saying. the white house didn't deny the underlying allegations of either report but with the response said, they're engaging in negotiations, tactics, and once again saying that national security is a risk with all of these leaks and we all have to admit there was a massive amount of leaks coming out of d.c. does this concern you? is it a valid point? >> leaks are always concerns. if you look at the leaks, people are in the white house and in the administration who are concerned about potential wrongdoing by the president. what this leak gave us, another piece of evidence that is the most significant question in politics now. did the president trump of the

united states obstruct justice, firing jim comey and urging him to quash the russian investigation. people that leaked this were concerned it would get in the hands of investigators and in the hands of the american public. >> good discussion. the story continues to spin. we'll continue to follow it. back overseas to jordan. u.s. ambassador to the u.n. nikki haley is visiting as part of her first overseas trip. craig melvin is traveling with her in amman, jordan this morning. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: jeff rossen, [ speaking in foreign language ]. that is good morning in arabic, so i'm told. this is nikki haley's first trip overseas as u.n. ambassador, set to arrive here in amman, jordan in a few hours from now and from here will make her way to turkey. president trump to the eat of us in saudi arab eat of us in saudi arabia,

conversations undoubtedly about how to end the six-year war in syria and the ambassador here in the middle east getting a firsthand look at the effects of that war. it was haley, of course, who really grabbed the world by the collar early last month when she held up those pictures of women and children who had been killed using chemical weapons in syria. some 7 million people have been killed since the war started. another 5 million are rep fugee. the ambassador will spend time in jordan touring one of those refugee camps along the syrian border, do the same in turkey along the syrian border, spend time in a refugee camp there as well as a u.s.-funded school for refugees. haley really has emerged, if you will, as one of the most outspoken, vocal members of the trump cabinet. haley spent time talking about the annexation of crimea saying all options were on the table, in north korea as well and a

clarifying voice. we'll spend time talking to her about that, her role in the administration and america's role in the world as well during an exclusive conversation, jeff and sheinelle. >> craig melvin, thank you very much from jordan. now to that terrifying flight from los angeles to honolulu, where a flight attendant had to stop a man from rushing towards the cockpit. nbc's steve paterson is live at l.a.x. where the problems started. good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, a flight into paradise interrupted by an unruly passenger but he was stopped as he made his way towards the cockpit thanks to a very brave flight attendant. a skirmish in the sky producing panic on the ground. friday's american airlines flight from los angeles to hawaii sounding alarms. f-22 fighter jets scrambling to escort the plane to honolulu after passengers spot a suspicious man rushing up the aisle. >> i get up, hear a noise. everybody's kind of freaking out. >> reporter: the passenger trying to make his way to the front of the plane was stopped

by the quick actions of a flight attendant. >> she rushed the cart to the entrance to first class, and then i stood up, stand behind her and she said, you're not coming in here. a bunch of guys grabbed him and found duct tape, and i think they went back there with pillows and blankets, just to tape him to his chair and keep him subdued. >> reporter: the passenger, a turkish national in his 20s, taken into fbi custody. >> currently preparing a complaint for interference with a flight crew. confirmed that the cockpit was not breached prior to previous reports. >> it was all kind of surreal. >> reporter: before boarding flight 31, that same passenger around 2:45 a.m. was caught going through an unauthorized door that led out on to the airfield ramp. he was arrested for misdemeanor trespassing, cited and released. airport police determined the man had been drinking but not enough to be cited for public intoxication allowing him to

board the flight to hawaii. back in honolulu, passengers thankful. >> flight attendants are heroic. did a phenomenal job. >> reporter: no one hurt onboard the flight and despite bomb technicians combing the plane, no explosives found. officials are working on a motive as the suspect will likely face federal charges. >> steve, thank you. this morning, high-flying former congressman anthony weiner's life is in shambles. weiner facing the possibility of years in prison for sexting with a teenager. his guilty plea coming the very same day his wife, huma abedin, hillary clinton's closest aide filed for divorce. >> reporter: one-time congressman anthony weiner walking out the crousourthouse, admitted sex offender. pleady guilty and reading a tearful apology details years of

obscene communications calling it a sickness and accepting full responsibility. the plea comes as part of a deal with federal prosecutor setting a prison sentence of 21 to 27 months would be appropriate telling him he would have to register as a sex offender and turn over his cell phone. on the day he admitted guilt, huma abedin timed for divorce. federal investigators finding clinton e-mails on his seized laptop leading fbi director james comey to reopen an investigation. >> this is bigger than watergate. >> reporter: for the past six years weiner has been tabloid fodder. >> today i'm announcing my resignation from congress. >> reporter: resigning from congress when his sexting first went public. >> i made some big mistakes. >> reporter: in 2013 tried to

videotape. the images are graphic. captures driver richard rojas barreling through crowds in a packed tourist area. it's hard to watch. according to prosecutors, he told investigators he smoked marijuana with pcp and wanted to kill the crowds on his way and hoped to be shot to death by police. rojas made a court appearance friday charged with murder and held without bail. a shocking close call caught on camera in washington. a police officer was speaking with a driver at the four-way stop. as he left to get back in his car you can see here two other cars collide in the intersection. look at that. one of those vehicles comes soaring through the air crashing into the korea spot where the officer stood seconds ago. no word yet on any injuries. and it is a big day across the pond, as they say. duchess kate's little sister pippa middleton getting married this morning to her hedge fund boyfriend. pippa probably the most famous

bridesmaid in the world after wowing every with a form-fitting dress at her big sister's wedding back in 2011's more on pippa's big day coming up. a royal wedding, dylan. >> beautiful form-fitting dress. like i notice those things. >> it was accurate. dylan's here with a check of the weather. >> yes. more storms moving through the middle of the country. look at what we saw yesterday. we had several storm reports with several tornadoes reported. 25 to be exact, hail reports up to 88 -- wind reports, 104 reported with this storm system, but we are going to still see more storms today. in fact, we have heavy rain moving through st. louis. lots of clouds. lightning. just to the northwest of little rock and extends into eastern texas. we are going to see this continue to move eastward, and it's not just the severity of the thunderstorms we're worried about but could see flooding. warm, moist air holds a lot of moisture. when it rains, ends unproducing torrential downpours. a flooding threat through the

out in the lower 70s to high 60s today. showers moving through the delaware valley, not a washout, just some scattered showers moving through. also seeing an increase in those winds. and notice on sunday, we're seeing upper 60s, as well, and upper 50s along the jersey shore. so it will be a chilly weekend, be sure to keep those jackets handy and tracking 70s for next week. back to you, rosemary. >> thanks, erika. happening now, philadelphia police are searching for two men who shot a toddler in kensington. the 2-year-old boy is in critical condition. police tell us the boy and his father were sitting on a porch on malta street last night when the gunman rode up on their bikes and started shooting. four bullets hit the child in the back. the father took a bullet to the knee. police believe that he may have been the intended target. the shooters are believed to be in their 20s. one was wearing a white vest, the other a red shirt, both wearing cutoff jeans or shorts. they were last seen riding their bikes on westmoreland street. if you have anymore informs,

philadelphia police would like to hear from you. this morning, the search for a teenager who vanished in the delaware last night is now a recovery effort. nbc 10 was in the air and on the ground in philadelphia's torresdale neighborhood. the 15-year-old disappeared from lyndon avenue. we're told he went swimming with three other teens last night. the others returned to shore. the coast guard joined ed philadelphia police and fire crews in the search. today, a few minutes from now, hundreds of people will be participating in the million dollar bike ride in philadelphia. it begins at 7:30 on high line park at the campuses of the university of pennsylvania. the ride supports people with rare diseases. that's it for now. i'm rosemary connors. we'll be back in another 25 minutes with a local update. now back to the "today" show. ♪

morning -- first, president trump is in saudi arabia. first foreign trip as commander in chief, the first stop on a busy nine-day, five-nation tour. while the president may be trying to hit the reset button on his troubled presidency, turmoil is building at home with several bombshell reports surrounding the russian investigation and fired fbi director james comey. much more in a moment. plus, the last confederate monument's in new orleans has been removed. the statue of general robert e. lee lifted from its ppedestal. the monument represents white supremacy and proposed to remove them after that 2015 massacre of nine black parishioners at a south carolina church. and tensions ran high, the game between the marmens alins dodgers. it happened when the reliever threw a pitch behind stanton who didn't like it and the benches cleared. no punches thrown, though.

>> i mean, i guess i learned from before. i said i'd never come back. so, you know -- i don't want everyone to say, oh, well you said this. you said that. >> that's true. >> honestly, i don't see myself coming back. i did 3,000 yesterday and don't see myself swimming 15,000 a day ever again. >> wow. >> i thought you were talking about calories. isn't that how much food you had when training? look, i know you're -- >> when i was like 15. >> you're there for a program that you're launching. near and dear to your heart working with the consumer product safety commission about pool safety for kids. talking to a bunch of parents and you're a new parent yourself. tell us about the program and why it's so important to educate parents and kids alike about swimming? >> the biggest thing if you look at drowning in the world and definitely in the u.s., second highest cause of death for children under the age of 14 in u.s., and being able just to get out ahead of it. for us, for my family, that's how we learned to swim.

that's how we fell in love with the sport. my mom put us in the water for water safety and now being a father, you know, kind of having boomer on the verge of starting to walk, and we do have a pool out back. so always making sure we know exactly where he is, if he is outside, and now we're in the process of -- coming up with a plan to, whether it's fence -- the pool, or make sure we just have something set in place so if something does happen and he was to get around the pool, that he would be safe. you know, for me, this is -- something like you guys said. it's very passionate for me, and i'm taking the pledge as a parent and i hope everybody else will take the pledge as we with me. >> michael, i have to ask. i have a 5-month-old at home, dying to get him in the pool. we're going to florida next week. is it too soon to put him in the pool with the chlorine and everything? >> no. not at 5 months. boomer was in the water between

3 and 5 months. just him, i guess -- i think the biggest thing, what we try to do, with my swim school, trying to get the kid to be, like, comfortable in the water. i think that's the biggest thing. you know, for me, like, he's the direct opposite of me. i didn't want to be on my stomach. only my back. he only wants to be on his stomach and hates being on his back. so every kid is differ and they're all going to learn differently. the biggest thing, trying to get them relaxed in the water. because i think once you get to the point where you're, where a kid is spazzing out, i think that's probably a big no-no. so -- anytime we can try to get him to be as comfortable as they can, is a big goal, and -- with our foundation and the swim school it's over 16,000 kids, in boys and girls clubs all over the u.s. and special olympics worldwide just being able to get water safety. if the kid doesn't want to swim, great. at least we know they're safe in the water.

night sky. meteorologist erika martin is tracking the changes to our weather with the most accurate forecast in the region. erika? >> all right. so, rosemary, that's right, we're tracking cooler temperatures for this weekend. unseasonably chilly temperatures. only topping out in the 60s across the entire delaware valley, both saturday and sunday. but right now doppler radar is picking up on those showers moving through from west to east. i want to show you satellite and radar, that two-hour loop, as well. showing you what we do have coming through. a few pockets of shower coming through the philly metro area for the lehigh valley and the outer suburbs, as well. and we do have some reports here. looks like a really strong wind gust moving through cape may at about 40 miles per hour, so far recorded. besides that, we haven't seen anything else other than the rain moving through the region. current winds right now, sustained wind speeds raking between 12 miles per hour for toms river, 20 for atlantic city, 18 for millville and dover and 15 for philadelphia. but look at these wind gusts. pretty strong, especially along thje
