>> reporter: she was in a fight with her 43-year-old boyfriend from maryland. they say he was beating the trooper and so she took action. >> she was being severely beaten by the boyfriend, which led to the trooper who was offduty grabbing her service weapon and firing one shot at the boyfriend. >> reporter: after hitting him in the chest, the trooper was able to call 911 to get help. paramedics took her out oba stretcher. the boyfriend was also rushed to the hospital. he died a short while later. they towed the lexus away at this point. she was domestic abuse victim acting in self-defense. we're told the trooper's in stable condition at the hospital. we're also working to learn more about the boyfriend. as we speak, our newsroom team is digging to learn much more about his past. live in the pike creek section, i'm tim furlong.

nbc10 news. >> turning to our weather, the umbrellas were out across the region today. taking a live look at a cloudy cape may from our camera at the marquis de lafayette hotel parts of new jersey and delaware could still see rain this afternoon. >> the roads may be wet for your drive home tonight. taking a live look at the schuylkill expressway at city avenue. of this is from our camera at the presidential city apartments. traffic already building up right now. a soggy start to the week is just a taste of what's to come. >> the amount of rain will depend on where you live. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has the most accurate weather. >> some places got a lot more rain than other. you can see the low clouds cutting off the tops of building. it looked a lot worse than this this morning as the rain came through philadelphia itself. we had more rain in delaware and in new jersey than in our pennsylvania county and the

heaviest of the rain now has just moved off shore so it's just off shore from atlantic city down to cape may, a little bit heavier around long beach island. that's just round one. there's more rain, a lot more rain down across the southern states as you can see moving in our general direction. it's not going to rain all the time this week but it's going to rain a lot more this week than just today. and this is the area that had the most. from dover, delaware, about an inch of rain estimated by radar to an inch and a half around vineland, buena vista had reports of 2 1/2 to 3 inches that was the highest amount that we've gotten and up to an 1 1/2 around toms river. much less less farther to the north and west as far as accumulation. it kept the temperatures down, only in the mid-60s in philadelphia. the average highs in the mid-70s

this time of the year. there's that rain at the shore. there may be another round of it coming in during the evening hours. you can see there it is, 11:00 tonight where most of the area is dry. the timing on those next rounds of rain, a look ahead to the holiday weekend coming up. >> right now at 4:00, bill cosby heads to court in pittsburgh. >> we're here to pick a job. >> the tough task, finding an unbiassed jury for his sex assault trial. count on nbc10 news to cover every angle of the local case that's getting word wide attention from jury selection to the verdict. >> cosby's defense attorney say they hope to have a jury in place by the end of this week. >> but it may take more time than they think. keith jones was the only reporter in the courtroom during

jury selection. >> we're already seeing some of the challenges during this case. some potential jurors saying they already afford an opinion, other jurors say they can't spend the time sequestered on the other side of the state. >> reporter: those are two huge sticking points. they've seated two jurors, two white men, one white woman. the jury selection, both sides able to determine exactly who gets to try bill cosby. when he walked into the courtroom, there wasn't much surprise. bill cosby's tall but moves slowly escorted as usual, a yellow handkerchief in his pocket. inside an oak panelled courtroom, the judge inform alley addressed 100 potential jurors and the national popularity of the case. then the cosby walked in and didn't directly face his peers who raised a number of plaque ards. 100 people split about evenly male and female. there were about 16 people of color.

86 out of 100 potential jurors reported they heard about the cosby case. more than one-third identified as having been a victim or having a loved one who was a victim of sexual assault. we learned the family of alleged sexual assault victim and formal temple university constand may testify in addition to doctors of other names including and law enforcement. >> reporter: so far cosby spoke to the judge just once to say he was having a hard time hearing each potential juror as they were asked questions from both sides. >> this is still going on right now. the judge expects to wrap this up at 4:30. cosby has pleaded not guilty. we'll be able to talk hopefully with both sides. they're expected out of this courtroom any minute. and when we get that we'll have that for you. live in pittsburgh, keith jones, nbc10 news. >> paint a picture for us, what

happened when cosby walked in and all the jurors saw him? >> reporter: there was a big question that lasted almost the last few days. was cosby going to show up? these jurors showed up today not knowing what was going to happen. they saw a lot of news vans here, probably put two and two together. there was some murmuring when he walked in. they didn't seem surprise they were part of the bill cosby sex assault trial. >> we'll see more from you in the days to come. >> we'll be in pittsburgh as attorneys work to find that jury. count on nbc10 for complete coverage of that case on air and on the nbc10 app. to new video into nbc10 of a senseless attack caught on camera. we do want to warn you. this may be difficult for some of you to watch. earlier this month this was outside in the 7-eleven. you're going to see him making fun of the man in gray who has

cerebral palsy. he walks over right there and he sucker punches him in the face. the guy then leaves while the victim recovers from that punch. west chester police arrested barry baker and charged him with assault. he's also facing other charges and he's due in court later this month. a major twist in the investigation into possible collusion between the trump campaign and russia. >> former national security advisor michael flynn says he will invoke the fifth amendment. that protects against self-incrimination. james comey is expected to call house oversight committee jason chaffetz. he wants to know if comey's firing was related to the russia controversy. >> president trump visited israel this morning. it's the second leg of his first tour overseas. erin coleman is live in our

breaking news center for details. >> reporter: after a formal greeting and a speech that focused on the fight against terrorism, the president and the first lady toured the church of the holy sepulcher. it's the site of christ's crucifixion. he is the first sitting u.s. president to pay his respects at this historic and iconic religious site. >> during my travels i have seen many hopeful signs that lead me to believe that we can truly achieve a more peaceful future for this region and for people of all faiths and all beliefs and frankly all over the world. >> now during this news conference mr. trump thanked prime minister netanyahu for his commitment to pursuing peace, admitting that it's one of the toughest deals of all. netanyahu tried to stop an israeli lawmaker from taking a

selfie with president trump today. it all happened at mr. trump was shaking hands with a long line of israeli dignitaries. the lawmaker nudged himself into line and took out himself and posed with a not too happy mr. trump. melania trump visited a hospital in jerusalem today. she was accompanied by prime minister netanyahu's wife sara. the two met a number of staff members before talking with young patients outside of the facility. tomorrow the president wraps up his israeli visit with a trip to the west bank city of bethlehem and a meeting with the palestinian president. i'm erin coleman, nbc10 news. >> and lester holt is in jerusalem reporting on president trump's trip. "nbc nightly news" with lester holt is live from the old city right after nbc10 news at 6:00 anchs crash between a school bus and a car sent two students to the hospital this morning. it happened at the intersection of harmony road. the bus was carrying about 30

students from the high school. the driver of the toyota prius failed to yield and drove into the bus. everyone involved is expected to be okay. tonight the community and local leaders will unite to stand against violence. this comes two days after someone shot nine people in north philadelphia. those shootings happened saturday night at 23rd and sergeant streets. the victims range from 17 to 26 years old. they were listening to music when two men approached and started shooting. many of the victims are still recovering. no arrests have been made. tonight's call to peace rally starts at 6:00 at 23rd and huntington streets. >> some pennsylvania prosecutors are pushing to reinstate mandatory minimum sentences. recently those minimum sentences were ruled unconstitutional by the state supreme court and now some argue there's no deterrent for people committing some crimes. the minimum sentences were not a deternlt to begin with and putting them back in place will cost $85 million a year.

>> bucks county the council rock school district will hold a meeting to talk about closing school. and possibly one other. the district is looking at combining schools as a cost saving measure. tonight parents can meet to hear the latest proposal and ask questions. the meeting begins at 7:00 at the chancellor center in newton. >> a historic high school in philadelphia is about to get some new life. they plan on making into a college prep tri school. the housing authority plans to infuse 10 to $15 million into renovations. the hope is to have it ready for the up coming 9th grade class in september. >> the murder of a college senior is being investigated by the fbi as a possible hate crime. richard collins the third was visiting friends at the university maryland college park when he was attacked early saturday morning.

investigators say u.m.d. student approached collins pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest. last night a vigle was held in his honor on u.m.d.'s campus. the suspect is a member of a racially charged facebook group. he faces several charges now including first degree murder. collins was set to graduate from bowie state tomorrow. >> the trial's underway in delaware county for the man charged allegedly using hidden cameras to spy on people in bathrooms. he was arrested after a student found a hidden camera in the third floor bathroom in villanova's hall. he's facing child porn, invasion of privacy and other charges. tomorrow president trump is expected to unveil his proposed budget that would drive millions of people off food stamped and cut medicaid. according to those familiar with the plan $1.7 trillion of those

cuts would be implemented over the next ten years. >> that plan comes as u.s. senators are also debating the future of medicaid and health care. >> today lauren mayk sat down with republican senator pat toomey. he's the lawmaker we don't often hear from on camera. he can play a key role in the health care debate. >> reporter: his views could be critical in shaping this bill and as i learned today he's not just looking to pass what the house passed and that could mean more debate over what you pay for and what your insurance company covers. with the house vote in the rear-view mirror, the future of a health care bill now rests with senators, like pennsylvania's pat toomey. >> what we're trying to do is find the consensus that would hold all republican senators together. >> reporter: how difficult is that? >> very difficult. >> reporter: he's part of a group of senators that meets twice a week trying to hammer out a plan. from his old city office, senator toomey a key player in the process told us what he'd

like to see, including an effort to lower premiums that could wage more debate over what insurers need to cover. >> i think it's much better to have a lot more flexibility about that so people can choose the kind of coverage that they need, that they care about and want because it all has a cost. >> reporter: right now under obamacare insurance are required so-called essential health benefits like emergency room trips and pregnancy. >> reporter: do you think that those essential benefits should just be optional period? >> i think that there's no unique category of wisdom and virtue in washington that doesn't exist anywhere else in america and so i think it's much better if we allow these decisions to be made state by state. >> reporter: the house bill let's states get waivers for those benefits. toomey says they shouldn't need to ask for them. >> reporter: how do you avoid, though, things then getting more expensive, insurers then charging a lot more money for things that right now are just standard. >> it's called competition, you

know. why is it that a cheeseburger doesn't cost $100 because someone's willing to sell it for a lot less. >> senator toomey also wants to make changes to medicaid, even different from what the house bill says. he says medicaid can't keep growing at its current rate and he wants to curb that so spending grows slower. >> these are some potential big changes. what's the time line here we can expect for this going through the senate? >> it's going to take a while. definitely we are talking about months here. i asked him, are you talking by the end of the year, he says he hopes so, so we'll see, but definitely months. he is hoping by the end of the year. >> we know you'll be keeping an eye on it for us. >> for quite a while apparently. >> turning back to our first alert forecast and a foggy center city sky line. just one of those days, could likely be one of those weeks. >> i say always have your

umbrella because i've been caught without it, so always have it just right there next to you. let's go to glenn for a look at our day and week. >> always keep in the car and keep it close this week. this is going to be raining more than once. maybe over for the night for a good bit of the area as you'll see in a minute. starting at 4:00 this morning. pay attention to is this area here, part of central delaware up to the interior portions of south jersey. and watch these areas of heavy rain just go right along the same line hour after hour after hour we're drying out across most of the area as you can see. but there's more on the way. that's a big area down by the gulf coast, so yes, we have a break but it is just temporary. the heaviest of the rain has moved off shore. at least for now. we still have some patchy areas

of light rain down toward cape may county. look how close it is to atlantic city and to cape may. just off shore and that is some really heavy rain. that's that area that had all of that rain from the this morning through afternoon from dover all the way up through a good bit of new jersey. show you some of the specific amounts. turnersville, 1.23, sicklerville had over an 1 1/2, shamong had 2 1/2 inches, millville, 2.75 while farther to the west closer to philadelphia, voorhees township only .79, collinswood, a little less than a half, delran, little less than a half of an inch. again, more to the east, less to the west. tabernacle, 2.7 inches. but ewing township, just about a third of an inch. quite a difference. now we're not seeing reports of

rain across much of the area any more. still pretty cloudy. 64 degrees in philadelphia. that's about 10 degrees below average for this time of the year. and as we go through the day tomorrow we're going to see dry weather for most of the day. but watch what happens later on? we're getting into the 70s with perhaps a touch of sunshine and then here comes some rain tomorrow night and perhaps into first thing wednesday. that is some pretty heavy rain. and the temperatures over the next few days getting milder. we didn't get out of the simms today. most of the day tomorrow for most of the day is dry, but late in the day you can start coming into delaware and especially into parts of the jersey shore that already had too much rain today. tammie will take you from there into the holiday weekend. >> we're hoping for a nice holiday weekend. >> at least warmer. >> warmer, maybe a little bit of

sunshine, none of these ugly issues and bad hair days that we'll see over the next four days. we do have a few breaks. i'll take you right on through. let's start on friday. we still could see some lingering showers especially from the city northward as we say good-bye to yet another system. they're just lined up like the jets at philadelphia international airport coming through every 36 hours or so. on saturday, you notice we don't have a lot of cloud cover, but that i think may be the nicest of all the days. we get the winds coming in more out of the west and that may be the warmest of the days as well. so saturday i would go ahead and mark that on my calendar as possibly the better day this weekend. by sunday you can see at noon clouds have moved in and you can see that we're starting to get a flow coming off of the atlantic, some spotty showers on sunday, even some spotty showers on monday for your picnic. just enough to be pesky. there's a more solid shield of

rain into monday night into tuesday. saturday, that's the day you want to checkoff and keep an eye on. we'll see 74 on friday, 81 on saturday in philadelphia, 73 in the bushes on friday, 80 on saturday. you notice all that sunshine even at the shore. 70s is what we'll be looking at. sunday, a chance of rain across the entire area. maybe a spotty shower late saturday night and into sunday and the same for monday. but i think saturday right now looks pretty good. >> and we're just days away now from the start of hurricane season, the teams who fly right into those storms are ready. tomorrow at 4:00, meteorologist krystal klei will take you on a tour of the planes used to get information from inside those huge storms. >> the so-called hand slap now seen around the world. >> and it's getting a lot of attention on social media. still ahead at 4:00, the first lady's response to a little presidential pda on their overseas trip.

>> announcer: now your nbc10 first alert weather. >> radar tracking showers still coming down in parts of delaware and south jersey. there's the radar on the left side of your screen. the cloudy conditions could be an issue for drivers as well. we take a live look at the ben franklin bridge. not your typical day at the beach today. here's rehoboth. people bundle up with the rain and clouds on the sand. the weather making for a rough day in the surf as well and you'll want to keep that umbrella handy because we're not finished with all this rain just yet. >> glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking a pretty wet week i guess in your most accurate weather forecast. >> especially places like the shore, this is cape may from the marquis de lafayette hotel and there's practically nobody there and there's good reason because it's chilly and damp and it's been raining for a good bit of

the day. now there's another area coming up from the south here and that is headed right in the direction of cape may and into the rest of the area. you can see how close we are. we're still getting a little bit of rain on land here near cape may and also a little bit around atlantic city but the heaviest is clearly off shore. and that's good thing because there was a lot of rain during the day today. this blue area indicated over one inch of rain, so much of new jersey had an inch to ninch and a half. there's dover with over an inch and as jackie said, that's not the ends of it. we got a big area back to the west and to the south along the gulf coast moving right in our direction and so there is more rain in the forecast. a little bit of rain left for tonight especially at the shore. going to get some more rain. not so much in and around the

inland areas, maybe a little bit of fog by morning in some areas but it's mostly just cloudy thing and that's what we're going to have for tomorrow, mostly just clouds. it's up to 65 degrees in philadelphia now. that's the warmest it's gotten all day because of the wind off the ocean and the clouds and rain. only 61 in allentown, 62 in trenton. but it will not be as chilly during the day tomorrow. we're talking about temperatures starting off in the low 60s by tomorrow morning. even with a touch of sunshine, we get into the 70s. we'll look ahead to the rest of the week and the holiday weekend coming up. >> turning to "nbc10 responds" and an alert about air bags. >> recall air bags that could kill are getting recycled making their way back into cars. job as a technical community specialist for chester county after he brought the concerns to light. he alleges that the computer-aided dispatch for fire police and ems operated without an active firewall and the county leaders knew about it. the nbc10 investigators are taking those claims to cybersecurity experts and examining just how broad the impact might be. >> here's a look at some of the $he,vy in delaware county residents are invited to a town hall meeting in springfield tonight. it's dressing the growing heroin epidemic. they'll be joined by police and addiction specialists. identifying the signs of addiction. starting the road to recovery and also finding support out there. in burlington county the moorestown police department is getting a new armored vehicle. officials approved that purchase of the heavy duty humvee for department use. it will not have a gun actuary ret. some residents are concerned about the military vehicle which

the rock rocked it. >> he did. >> taking a live look at the clouds hovering over center city. hard to see just a sign of what's to come today and maybe later in the week too, glenn. >> yeah but about an hour ago i couldn't even see that much from that camera so believe it or not that's an improvement. this is the way we started the day with a lot of rain especially in new jersey and that's the way we kept it. hour after hour after hour in some of these places, finally drying up across most of the area, but we're still seeing a little bit of rain down by the shore and little bit heavier right over sea isle city at the moment. just off shore that's where some of the heaviest rain is and that's where it's going to stay at least for a little while. may be another round coming up.

very, very little total rainfall from philadelphia north and west and from central delaware up through central new jersey. a lot of rain. radar estimates generally an inch to inch and a half around dover and rising sun, about an inch up towards smyrna and in new jersey, vineland about an inch and a half, millville inch and a half. we had some stations reporting well over two inches so it was a lot of rain and you need time to dry out. this next area's coming right up in our direction and so we may be getting some more rain by this time tomorrow. in philadelphia, of course, a whole lot less, about a half inch of rain at the airport, little less than a half at graduate hospital, about a third of an inch in dora, about a third of inch in torresdale, port richmond, society hill, little less than a half inch. the temperatures now are in the 60s for the most part. 58 water temperature. the wind coming in off the ocean

keeps the coast cool and that of course is going to be important for memorial day weekend, but that's about average for this time of the year. the ocean is not warmer or colder than it is on average. here we go through the night tonight. some more rain in atlantic city possibly, even through the evening, but cloudy skies elsewhere, some areas of fog toward morning and then generally dry during most of the day tomorrow. if we get a little peek of sunshine we could get up over 70 but we could also see some showers later in the day and tomorrow evening. here's come the rain returning possibly for the afternoon rush. and then we have the rainiest of all thursday, that's the stronger system coming in. temperatures held down in the 60s. we could see some thunderstorms with that.
