right now at 6:00. sucker punch. a man caught on camera attacking a stranger and mocking his disability. ñr= brand new at this hour. a new twist for the man at the center of the u.s./russia investigation. >> slippery commute tonight for parts of our region and this rainy pattern won't let go of your week any time soon. >> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. >> right now at 6:00, a state troopers boyfriend shot dead and tonight police say she's the one who pulled the trigger. investigators tell us the boyfriend was beating the trooper at her home so she defended herself with her gun. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. >> and i'm jim rosenfield. the officer is recovering tonight. let's go live to tim furlong live in pike creek with more on this story. tim. >> reporter: we're not naming the trooper and police haven't either. she's still in the hospital

tonight recovering. neighbors they don't want to talk on camera about this but a few told us they feel sad about the whole situation that played out in her house. >> she was being severely beaten by the boyfriend. >> reporter: state police got an 911 call from one of their own. they say she decided she had to take action because she was being beaten by her boyfriend. >> it was a very physical altercation that occurred which led to the female trooper grabbing her service weapon. >> reporter: the trooper used her state issued gun to shoot her boyfriend in the chest. they rushed her boyfriend to the hospital where he died a short time later. by this point neighbors had gathered outside. >> i saw a lady on a stretcher. >> reporter: the trooper was taken to the hospital as well. she acted in self-defense but detectives stayed through the night to investigate. they told the boyfriend's car away. and court records show he had a history of domestic abuse

issues. >> reporter: and the trooper's two kids weren't home when this all happened. the troopers now in stable condition. her police suv still sits outside her house. police haven't said what the couple was fighting about. they tell me it's all going to be part of their investigation. we'll keep you posted for now. live in pike creek section of new castle county, nbc10 news. >> now to our fert alert weather. brace your self for a wet workweek. we're tracking three rounds of week that could make many of your commute's slippery. that's how it is in wilmington. the roads are wet. every part of the region is dealing with wet weather at some point today. drivers were splashing along wet roads in south philadelphia, umbrellas up in newark, delaware, and in camden, new jersey, as well. the nbc10 first alert radar shows that rain still soaking parts of our area. >> that's why our first alert

neighborhood weather is so important. >> let's bring in chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> some parts of the area had a whole lot more rain than others during the day today, much of the day we could not see it from this view, liberty place here, beautiful picture, totally obscured for much of the day and delaware and new jersey getting pounded with rain much of the day. we just have a little bit in southern delaware right now and sussex county which has gotten hit hard. this area in yellow in new jersey forts most part has gotten hit the hardest, vineland, mays landing up to ship bottom and you can see the radar estimates, one to two inches of rain localized areas of up to four inches of rain. just during the day today. now we have a bit of a break but here's more coming. this round two that's going to be coming late tomorrow and tomorrow night. then we'll get around three by

thursday. here we go, futurecast showing some more rain coming from delaware up toward the jersey shore. that's tonight. we'll tell you more about the other rounds of rain in a few minutes. >> new at 6:00. a new development in the investigation into possible connections between the trump campaign and russia. in the past 45 minutes a top democratic in the house said there is evidence former national security advisor michael flynn may have lied while getting his security clearance. flynn appears to have told investigators the u.s. company paid for a 2015 trip to russia when, in fact, a russian company paid. this comes hours after flynn said he will invoke the fifth amendment in the senate probe into russian election hacking. the fifth amendment protects against self-incrimination. he was fired in february after misleading the vice president about his connections.

>> president trump is in israel tonight and he's reaffirming a strong relationship between the u.s. and israel. that's after allegations he shared classified intelligence information from israel with russian diplomats. >> just so you understand, i never mentioned the word or the name israel. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu insisted that intelligence cooperation is terrific with the united states. >> and coming up in ten minutes, we sit down with republican senator pat toomey for his assessment of the trump administration so far and what he thinks the white house should be more careful of. >> back to michael flynn for a moment because today new jersey governor chris christie said if he'd been elected president michael flynn would never had been a part of his administration. >> if i were preak of the united states i wouldn't let general flynn in the white house let alone give him a job. >> christie said he warned candidate trump and later president-elect trump that flynn would not benefit his

administration. christie said flynn wasn't quote his cup of tea. >> right now at 6:00, the people who will decide bill cosby's fate are being chosen tonight. jury selection in cosby's sex assault trial started today in pittsburgh. 100 people will be questioned in court each day until 12 jurors and six alternates are chosen. and so far five of those jury members have been chosen as bill cosby looked on. >> this is video of cosby coming to court today to watch jurors grill the men or winl who will convict or acquit him on drug that he drugged and molested a woman in his montgomery home. >> he joins us now live with more, keith. >> reporter: this is arguably the most important phase of this entire case. so far the jury consists of three white men and two white women. however, their backgrounds are quite diverse. some are related to victims of sexual assault, others are

related to convicted criminals. a quiet walk after a busy day. cosby leaving slowly. inside he was interested, surveying each potential juror and once even expressed he had trouble hearing them. almost two dozen people were questioned, five jurors have been selected. it was a long day inside the courthouse. 100 people entered, 14 reported they had no knowledge of the cosby case. one-third had been a victim or had a loved one who had been a victim of sexual assault. none were asked about whether they were fans of the 79-year-old or watched the cosby show. instead, the question, could they be fair and impartial, so far both sides agreed five have passed that test. 50 more people will be welcomed back into the courthouse for more questioning as this process will continue tomorrow morning and you can be sure that we will be live. i'll be inside there and i'll

58th and king sessing early yesterday morning. the victim is in critical condition. >> atlantic city casino industry is healthy again that's according to the casino control commission. casinos operateing profits are up by more than 30% for the first three months of this year. >> new jersey lawmakers just took a big step toward taxing fantasy sports. the state assembly approved a bill today to put a 10.5% taxes on the revenues. the senate has approved a similar bill with a slightly lower tax rate. >> in chester county, a votesville man is facing charges for sucker punching a stranger. the attack is all caught on camera. it may be hard for some of to you watch. it happened outside a 7-eleven store in chester. barry baker the guy in the yellow hoodie there started mocking that man's disability and then the video shows him

punching him right there in the face. baker's now charged with simple assault. they call him a bully and his behavior appalling. >> a crash turned into a hazmat scare in delaware today. a pickup truck plowed right through the wall of a building off route 72 this morning. a lab inside that building was damaged and hazmat crews were called in because of the chemicals used inside. two people were hurt but will be okay. >> upnext. the return of the zika threat. the brand new warning for philadelphia health officials tonight. >> we got more rain during your workweek and warmup for the holiday weekend. how hot temperatures are going to be coming up in my most accurate first alert forecast. >> plus vandals attack a controversial muriel inside italian market. that story is all new on "nbc10 news at 6:00."

repairs will be significant. >> now to an nbc10 exclusive, weighing in today on the trump administration. >> let's go to lauren mayk who sat down with the senator for an exclusive one on one interview. >> reporter: senator pat toomey voted for president trump but he didn't align himself with him during the campaign. so senator toomey is watched carefully by both trump supporters and by critics. >> i have a lot of disagreements with donald trump, i've been very clear about that. >> reporter: that was senator pat toomey in a campaign commercial last year and this is the re-elect the public senator today assessing the trump administration so far. >> i think it's mixed. >> reporter: and getting rid of some regulations but he says. >> i think the white house needs more discipline in terms of the daily management of the white house and the communications. i thinkóó some of their proposa need more careful vetting before they are rolled out. >> reporter: in a one on one interview today, senator toomey addressed the investigation into

russian interference that had senate colleagues calling hearings. >> i want to get to the bottom of what exactly they did, with whom, why, what were they hoping to accomplish and was there any collusion. was there any cooperation. we should absolutely get to the bottom of that. >> the republican senator campaigned last year on #ó,v independence. >> reporter: do you feel you're living up to that? >> absolutely. >> reporter: critics have let him know when they aren't happy with him. holding protests with his office last week and complaining about access to their senator. >> what do you think your relationship is right now with your constituents? >> reporter: well my constituents run the gamut, right, of our spectrum from people who are thrilled with what i'm doing to people who are appalled at what i'm doing and everything in between. >> reporter: center says he's met with some of those groups as well. he has not been one to make dramatic statements about the administration but he did have some strong words last week when

president trump revealed classified information to the russians. he said he wanted a full explanation. today i asked if he has gotten that yet, he said no. >> to this now, the philadelphia health department bracing for an increase in zika case there's summer. they're putting out ads at the airport and on septa buses warning people especially those traveling out of the country. zika is spread by mosquito bites and is dangerous for pregnant women and babies. zika carrying mosquitos are highly unlikely to be in our area. >> turning to our first alert weather now. we found an empty beach today in ventnor, atlantic county, just a dreary and overcast day there and in philadelphia, just about everybody needed an umbrella or a hood earlier today to deal with the rain that was coming down in old city and it might still be raining where you live. you can see the rain there on first alert radar at chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here to tell us it's going to be a rainy week. >> we got another couple of shots of it and some parts of

the area had a lot of rain today and you can see starting at 6:00 a.m. you just watch this area in central delaware, into the inland portions of south jersey, and hour after hour the heaviest of the rains going right over the same place. we're finally dry out across much of the area and even at the jersey shore, things are improving quite a bit. a little bit delaware beaches, a little bit in south jersey so this area in the yellow here has had well over an inch of rain, some places up to three and one or two spots up to near four. we get a bit of a break and then here comes more. it's just racing right up from the south and this is a wet weather pattern overall. so today's not the only day this week that we're going to be seeing some of the rain here.

we've had amounts of rain again over two inches in some areas but the farther north and west you get the less there is. there's 2.7 in tabernacle, 1.8 in browns mills. down to .37 in ewing township. it really does matter where you are. now, later tonight and tomorrow, we can see a couple showers still in atlantic city, a lot of clouds. this is the fog symbol, some areas getting fog overnight tonight and into the morning. it's just a lot of cloud cover tomorrow. any peeks of sunshine, that will push temperatures into the 70s. you can see it's 10:00 a.m. everybody's got the clouds and later in the day, that's when the rain starts coming in especially at atlantic city and down through delaware and tomorrow night, into wednesday, everybody gets it. so here we are tomorrow afternoon.

getting into the low 70s and then here comes the rain. shooting up late tuesday night and into wednesday morning. today was round one. that's round two. round three is probably the heaviest and that's going to be on thursday during the day. rain and thunderstorms. so the temperatures are below normal. the average highs are around the mid-70s now and especially thursday below the average for this time of the year. and as we look ahead toward the end of the week and the holiday weekend, you see much improvement for friday and saturday. those should be the nicest days of the next week and then sunday, another system comes in producing some rain that may last into memorial day. showers and even some thunderstorms but at least the temperatures are way up there. more like summer-like temperatures for the holiday weekend. i'm john clark from csn.
