industrial park saw the crash and the lots more heard and felt it. >> we heard the sputtering sound coming tr the engine. nbc 10 is the medical helicopter. the pilot was alone doing inclement training run flying by instruments in and around the new castle county airport. it just didn't sound right. >> i looked up and saw it going straight down. >> the flames were just atrocious at that time. e we couldn't see anything left of the airframe at all. >> going on what he said, there isn't is much left of the chopper. you see what it did to the outbuilding. it burned some nearby buildings and cars in the area have

significant damage as well. the state police are goungs to have a news kmpb. t the ntsb and faa will keep us posted. a dramatic story here. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> we'll get more information as the news conference begins. investigators say the weather conditions at the time of the crash were a big factor. >> let's go to chief meteorologist glenn schwartz with more on how weather played that important role. >> it was the intention to fly into bad weather so there's no surprise that there was bad weather at the time. now just how bad was it? there's not much on the radar. just a few sprinkles missed. the clouds are pretty low to the ground. reported about 500 feet above

the ground. so you had that much room to play with. visibility was two and a half miles in that period between 10 and 1:001:00 in the morning. tvs even lower earlier in the morning. the reported visibilities at 11:00 a.m. the airport at 4 miles. philadelphia had 8 mile visibility. so these are conditions that helicopters have managed to fly in in the past. it's not exactly ideal weather. but the intention was to fly in bad weather. and that's what they got. the weather was worse. and let's say at 8:00 in the morning than it was at 10:00. it was gradually improving. the visibility was going up a little bit each hour. the cloud deck was not going any

kig zig cantly different amounts as we went through 10:00 in the morning. >> regarding that deadly helicopter crash, this news conference is beginning with state police ask the ntsb. let's lin in. >> this morning a 2006 air bus ec-135 helicopter, which is being piloted by a 37-year-old franklin, new jersey, man crashed into a drainage ditch located in the rear of the post office facility located in the 200 block of quigley boulevard. the helicopter, which is owned by penn star, an association with the university of pennsylvania hospitals, then became engulfed in flims. responding fire personnel and

neighboring fire companies arrived at the scene and were able to extinguish the blim fla flames. the sole pilot was declared dead at the scene. we are withholding the name pending the notification of his next of kin. there were no other injuries as a result of the crash. minor structural damage to a shed is was sustained by flying debris and flames. upon speaking with aviation officials, it was learned that the pilot, who was employed by metro aviation, have flown from the atlantic city airport. s in currently an ongoing and active investigation which is being conducted by the delaware state police, the national transportation safety board and federal aviation administration. further information on the investigation will be released at a later time as the investigation dictates.

behind me the crews still working out here and the fire crews on scene. this started with a leak from a a rail car. the danger is that when it hits the air t can be flammable, butt difficulty is we're about to show you it makes it hard to see. >> at this industrial park, the white vapor filled the air. fire crews from the substance leaking from a rail car. here at a spot where material is transferred from rails to trucks. >> what happened was the valve failed and once that hits temperature, it becomes a vapor. >> reporter: the potential for a fire or explosion is why emergency crews evacuated a half mile around this park. no homes, but a daycare is among those told to leave. >> it was just a matter of going from one business to the next and let iting them know they ne to leave and the direction they needed to take. >> with the area evacuated,

crews dealt with a leak that persisted for hours. finally, though, good news as crews got access to that valve. >> anything leaking at this point? >> right now the leak is secured. >> the work here not done yet. >> we're going to go building to building and going to do air monitoring to make sure the buildings are secure and safe. >> evacuations here are still in place. it could take hours before businesses can get back in here to this industrial park and for commuters, here's what you need to know. the road e closures also remain in place in particular on 295. the on and off ramp is exit 10. they are still closed down. so you'll need to take an alternate route. an emergency management crew is at the site of that propane leak say they are concerned a about the threat of lightning later on tonight. >> you can see from first alert radar that storms are heading our way in just a few hours.

let's go back to glenn schwartz with more on the storm threat. >> a lot of lightning strikes back here in the richmond area. this is coming in toward the philadelphia area itself. and it will be getting into new jersey. the timing and the highest resolution models that we have been showing and telling the eoc about, the first showers developing perhaps around 6:00, these are just isolated. the main area coming in after 7:00 and closer to 8:00. here's sweedsboro. so the heaviest thunderstorms are in the vicinity.

the second day in a row. jurors asked to see the reaction of d.j. as the moment detectives informed him they found his son dead half submerged in the river. in this, police interrogation video, his 911 call to police and a secretly recorded conversation with the boy's mom may help this jury reach a verdict on two counts, murder and child endangerment. >> there's no traditional smoking gun. there's no signs of a struggle. >> we asked rock co, who is not tied to the case torks weigh in on how difficult a a case like this is for the jury. >> he pointed out both the prosecution's strengths. >> he was home alone with the child. there's no evidence of a break in. no evidence that anybody else had a motive to harm this child.

so therefore, it has to be the dad. >> as well as their weakness in the process of lielimination of who did it may not rise to beyond a reasonable doubt. >> there's enough to convict him with the circumstantial evidence. but i won't be surprised it he's acquitted of it either. >> the jurors have only had five solid hours of deliberations. even over three days we just found out they were dismissed for today. they won't return until after the holiday weekend to continue deliberating on tuesday. >>. >> those images show the bomber at a shopping center right next to the concert arena. take a look. he's wearing a blue backpack. it appears to be the same backpack that three days later

"the new york times" obtained this images of what's left of the bomb. its battery ask trigger. british officials are said to be furious about the photos being leaked to the media. >> i will be making that intelligence shared must remain secure. >> two more people were arrested in the attack that killed 22 outside a concert. eight men have been detained, including the. suspected bomber's brother and father. today's britain's queen elizabeth visited children injured in the blast. she also shook hands and thanked hospital staff. 12 children were taken to the hospital following monday's attack. we are continuing to follow the latist developments in the manchester suicide bombing. we'll bring you any updates as they come in.

erin coleman, nbc 10 news. president trump told nato leaders to pay their fair share on defense during the summit. the president had been urging leaders to give up to a 2011 decision. it was to increase spending on defense of 2% of the gross domestic product. but not everyone has done that. >> they are not paying what they should be paying ask what they are supposed to be paying for their defense. this is not fair to the people ask taxpayers of the united states. >> germany would have to double its military budget spending more money on defense than russia. want i want you to look at this. an audiocassetwkward moment as d a nato leader out of the way.

ask move him aside. >> new details on the plane crash last week. the ntsb issued a preliminary report this morning. it says the pilots turned too late upon approach which caused the plane to go down. the report says the plane was late making its final turn for approach. they have the voice recorder and are tribing it. philadelphia patients, health experts met today to talk about the impact of repealing the affordable care act. philadelphia mayor jim kenny and planned parenthood hosted the event at the center in center city. as it stands right now, the bill strips millions of women tr health care and blocks low income patients from going to planned parenthood for preventive care. right now the senate is drafting its own version of the bill. soldiers placed thousands of american flags at arlington

national cemetery today. the annual tradition is known as flags in. it marks the beginning of memorial day weekend activities at the cemetery. for more than 60 years the mission has been carried out by the third u.s. infantry regimen nicknamed the old guard. the unit plants small flags in front of the more than 230,000 grave markers. in south jersey, members of the military and state police held their annual parade of cretes ceremony. participants laid wreaths at the tribute to those who gave their lives in service to our koun b try. we continue to follow two breaking news stories. a deadly helicopter crash in wilmington. state police announced the pilots who died was a 37-year-old from franklinville. it was on a training mission at the time. the investigators are locking into ntsb records tr crashes in our area. we'll have much more on the story at 4:30.

fire crews were called to this industrial park after the white smoke you see there filling the air. gas leaked into the air from a rail car. in the past hour crews managed to contain that leak. they are making sure surrounding buildings are safe. the wet weather is not stopping an annual tradition in chester county. the stands are covered and the wind was blowing rain into the stands. organizers say the wet weather did not impact the day's events. competitionen went on and the course was a little muddy. >> i think we needed more plastic clothing than we brought. we were hoping the stands would be drier. but we're not as wet as the riders. >> the horse show runs through june 4th. here in philadelphia it's a rush to get out of the city for

some to start the hong holiday weekend. this is a live look at the expressway near city avenue. it's not too bad on this turz. our team of meteorologists is helping prepare for the weekend. >> before we can make it through friday, we have to get through another round of storms. >> this is probably going to be the worst weather we're going to see in quite awhile. we were talking about the helicopter crash. it's an idea of how low the clouds were in wilmington. a whole lot better than conditions have improved there. 66 degrees with a northeast wind in philadelphia. it's close to 70 in northern delaware. a lot of clouds across the area. but delaware it's a different story depending on where they are in that state. the northern part of the state

it's 65 in talliville. it is up to 70 in wilmington. 72 in middletown. and as we were telling you earlier in the day, up to 80 degrees in parts of the area. lincoln, 80. that was the difference. we had the east wind up in pennsylvania and so that's why it was so much colder up there. down in the warm, humid air, we have some big storms headed in the direction of washington. count up the lightning strikes. it's a 266 of them in this area. so there's not a lot of lightning with that. there's n this line here, there's more activity to the west that could be affect iing over the weekend. the main threat comes in the next few hours. there are some of the storms coming right into the area.

by 10:00, it's starting to move out. by late tonight and into tomorrow morning. so tomorrow is going to be a better day than today. it's not necessarily going to be a real sunny day or a real warm day, but, hey, that's better than it has been. a little bit of sunshine is better than none at all. let's check out the rest of the week. >> we are going to get some over the weekend. not as much as we'd like. i'm going to show you what you can expect for the weekend. we wake up on saturday. we're going to have a little bit of sunshine out there 37 we're going to be looking at winds that are coming off the lands. we have more of a west wind and that's going to warm us up nicely. that's a good thing. the clouds are going it move in by the evening hours and several of the forecast models have spotty showers past the area. this particular model has them down to the south.

then we get into sunday and we have that on shore breeze. we have cloud cover. it's going to be cooler along the beaches. only in the 60s. here come some showers. you're going to start your monday with some showers, especially along the beaches. and then you'll start to clear out in the evening. you're going to have to time it out to dodge all of the showers and storms. here is your weekend weather. on saturday, 78 in philadelphia. we are going to be facing some showers out there. and i want to let you know storm ranger 10 will be out to keep you ahead of the storms. this is the first of its kind weather radar on wheels that gets us closer to the storms. up to the minute information that wiit will be providing us.

did to stop her car from being stolen. here's how it all unfolded. you can see a black cadillac pull in front of the woman's car. someone jumped out and hopped into the driver's seat. so she jumped on the thood prevent them from leaving. the bad guy slammed on the breaks twice to try to shake her off the vehicle. he got into the street, but eventually gave up and took off. so scary. a lot of people are focused on that long holiday weekend. >> some are getting a jump start on it too. here's a live look at i-95. we're going to try to get you that picture as soon as we can. anyone hitting the road could see some storms. they have to be wary of that. >> the storms are fierce already near washington and moving this way. we could see a lot of lightning and downpours just a few hours from now. i'm tracking the timing and who is likely in that path and the most accurate weather forecast. and we continue to follow

we are tracking breaking news. a helicopter crashed this morning near the new castle county airport. it crashed behind the post office ask burst into flames. the pilot was killed. he was 37 years old from frank lynnville, new jersey. we found this photo of the actual helicopter that went down.

it took off from atlantic city and crashed just before noon. mitch went through the ntsb records. >> what were you able to uncover? >> so in the tri-state in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, we see five helicopter accidents a year. that's according to ntsb records that we reviewed. this is video from one of those fatal crashes back in 2012 in bucks county. here in pennsylvania in the last ten years, we have seen 31 accidents. in new jersey, we have seen 13 helicopters crash in that same period of time in the last decade. those records show delaware has seen four helicopter accidents not including the one today. now in those 47 crashes in the last decade, 11 people have died in those 47 crashes. we also look ed at how often th same type of helicopter involved in today's accident was involved in any previous crash. the euro continuer model showed up seven times in the past

decade in new jersey, pennsylvania and delaware. an update on breaking news out of logan township. a leak has been contained. it leaked into the air. they are going building to building to make sure that area is safe. an nbc first alert weather is tracking the threat for storms in our area tonight. >> you can see damaging winds and heavy downpours in just a few hours. chief meteorologist glenn schwartz has more of the timing and what to expect in your most accurate weather forecast. >> we have a couple hours to watch this. it's not happening during the afternoon rush. look how fast some of this is moving right up the coastline. then the other is moving to the northeast. and very warm air that's filled up there, very humid and it's created some pretty big storms.

you see the purple in there. there's probably hail in that cell along with a lot of lightning and there are warnings around washington, d.c. area for that storm. behind this line, things quiet down a bit. there's still some moisture. so there are some threats as we head toward the weekend. nothing like what we're going to see tonight. by 6:00, some of these isolated storms into new jersey. the main area from washington starts to come up after 7:00. look how red this area is is. this is pretty nasty weather. it's going to delay things. you might have ponding on the roads. you're going to have lightning and this is going to hang around for the evening. you can see the swirl when you see that sometimes. >> 62 in trenton.

wipers are get iting a workout today too. a dreary day across the region. we could see storms in some spots tonight. >> let's go to glenn schwartz for a look at our day. >> cloudy day. but cloudy day at the beach is better than getting stuck in traffic here. this is i-95 in wilmington. visibility has improved in delaware. and temperatures are going up. 78 in dover. 70 in wilmington. it's barely 60 in potstown. we'll see temperatures much cooler with the wind coming in off the ocean. 6 5 in cape may. much warmer inland. what's happening here.

we have the storm center right around washington. as that comes up this way, it's going to go into the east winds wp when they converge, the air is forced to rise. that helps make those storms even stronger. that's why i'm expecting them to hold together. counting up the amount of lightning strikes and it's pretty close to what we counted a half hour ago. there's not a a real increase or decrease. this is 150 miles from philadelphia. moving at 30 miles an hour. it would be getting here in about five hours. it will come faster than that. there's the cluster. there's more moisture back to the west. so that's not the only threat

for rain this weekend. watch this as we go through 8:00 to 9:00 hour. look at those heavy strorm storms coming through. then things quiet down later tonight. so we have the evening thunderstorms across the area. look at this. you can see it just about anywhere. and then as we go into tomorrow, it's dry. it's partly to mostly cloudy. it's still a great improvement over today. tammie souza will see if it that improvement continues through the rest of the weekend. >> it's going to continue through the rest of the weekend. you're having a big barbecue. i'm waiting for my invitation. maybe that's on saturday. >> it's going to be the best of the days. more clouds than sun. we get to saturday. it's still the best day. some of the forecast models want to bring a a shower in late in the day or in the evening. but nonetheless, it's going to be close to 80 across the area. we will see some sunshine. sunday we'll start with clouds. we could see some late afternoon

rain and storms that continue overnight and into monday. we have now made it scattered rain and storms on monday. that will be hit and miss. plan accordingly. at this point still, saturday may be your best day unless you're the one unluky person under that one isolated shower. the same for saturday. both pretty decent days. saturday is the nicer of the days. we'll see rain and some storms late in the day. on monday we are going to be looking at showers and storms moving into the area on and off. and we start to clear out and next week doesn't look half bad. it looks very seasonal and mild and much nicer than this week has looked. >> i like that 70s and 80s. >> it's a saturday. you can grill out. barbecue everything and sunday just eat it indoors. >> we're all waiting for the invitation. >> even most of sunday is okay.
