in the live picture. rainy conditions for drivers along i-76. this is a look at conditions near city avenue. and going to wilmington. here's how traffic is looking along i-95. some people hitting the road right now trying to get to their destinations to relax for the rest of the long weekend. let's go to glenn schwartz. some people are driving through rain right now. we heard it right over our heads here. >> some of it is very heavy and it's all developed just within the last hour. there was nothing on the radar close by. an hour ago and now we have some really heavy rain and some thunderstorms. so the northern edge of this getting to doylestown in it just a few minutes. now we see this area of red, which heavy rain. we don't see a lot of lightning

flashes now. we do see that heavy rain that continues moving straight south to north. it lasts longer because it's traveling over the same areas. so winn moore, east of marion, it's a good thing they got the leak cleaned up but there's lightning starting to develop here. that's right in the area that did have that leak a little while ago. we also have indications of hail with this storm coming right into philadelphia itself. this area of purple suggests a potential of hail over 1 inch in diameter.

down towards south philly. >> to get the updated holiday forecast, track the storms the minute they arrive in your neighborhood our live interactive radar. right now at 6:00, a helicopter pilot lost his life in a crash. the piet lot was operating a helicopter during a training mission. it was preparing for emergency situations. and we can tell you about that hop chopper that it went down today just before noon right near the new castle county airport. tim furlong is live at that scene.

>> reporter: they are going to be taking over this investigation to the crash that happened here behind this building here today. . all afternoon the police had their photos and video for investigators. everyone trying to figure out the cause of the crash. a bunch of witnesses say the chopper sounded like it was struggling. some people saw this medical chopper before it hit the ground just shy of the new castle county airport. >> there was a guy that ran from the post office and he said that he saw helicopter coming down upside down. lots hr. people in the industrial park heard the crash. >> i thought that chopper hit this building. . . that's how bad that noise was. >> reporter: police say the pilot from new jersey flew from atlantic city specifically to train in today's bad weather. he worked for metro aviation. the university of pennsylvania's se was doing approach training. the. chopper sounded like it was

struggling and crashed and exploded. >> this building shook. >> reporter: they tried to help. they couldn't get anywhere near the wreckage because ts fire was too intense and the smoke was too thick. >> there was fire damage to surrounding buildings. they moved the cars back too. the hyundai has h a a window blown out and a lot of cars have dirt on them. it's amazing nobody on the ground was hurt at this point. the ntsb and faa are not releasing the name of the pilot who was involved. we're live, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. more e details are coming in about a propane gas leak near a daycare. it leaks into the air from a rail car. lauren mayk explains how responders stopped that leak before the threat of lightning moved in. >> this leak is now contained and rows are back open. it took hours to get things under control, but we have learned how emergency crews did it using hazmat suits and a tool that is simple, but effective.

the white vapor filling the air carried a a danger. >> the problem is when it becomes gaseous, it's flammable. >> reporter: it started out as liquid being transported and ending up as a gas. it escaped when a valve failed. for emergency responders, the challenge to fix it wasn't just the danger, but the difficulty in seeing through it. the trick, misting it with water. >> there's a couple things. it alleviates the spark and helps to knock the vapor down to give better visuals on what's happening. >> reporter: officials evacuated a half mile around the industrial park. there are no homes here, but they told 1900 people at local businesses and a daycare to leave the area. the leak contained work continues to monitor air quality and bring back power that had been shut off. and next make sure it doesn't happen again. >> we're going to suggest they double check and make sure they

have inspectionsdown done on the valves that are staged over in that area. >> reporter: there were two reports of injuries. both are expected to be okay and one of them involved a burn. this gas when it hits the air freezes to the point where it can burn your skin. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. new at 6:00, the suspect charged with sucker punching a man with cerebral palsy is wanted by police. investigators say this video shows barry baker punched the victim after mocking his. he was arrested for this incident and then released. but now another warrant is out for him as he failed to show up for court today in a separate case. jury deliberations will resume tuesday in the trial of the man accused of killing his 3-year-old son. this was the second full day of deliberations in the murder trial. prosecutors say he killed his 3-year-old son brendan and

dumped him in a park. ed to we spoke to a former prosecutor and defense attorney who has no ties to this case. he says jurors could get hung up on the fact that the medical examiners never gave a cause or exact manner of death. >> the medical examiner originally said that he couldn't determine the cause or manner of death. he later changed that opinion when apparently the prosecution asked him the day before jury selection to e review the file and see if he could change the conclusion. today the jury asked to review some evidence including portions of the coroner's report. an update on a standoff and attempted robbery at a cvs. police identified the suspect. investigators say he faces many charges. he walked in wearing all black. he hid in a storage room when officers got there and surrendered about an hour and a half later. officers found a weapon nearby. new at 6:00, septa is

raising the fairs you pay to ride its buss and trains. the board approved fare increases. they hosted 10 public hearings. tap the nbc 10 app. a fraternity linked to several sexual assault investigations is now suspended for five years. the university announced that suspension today. drex el cited alcohol violati violations, but the frat had already been on interim suspension after reports of allegations of sexual assault inside the fraternity house. new jersey governor chris christie is shedding new light an the federal opioid commission he's heading up. he delivered remarks during a luncheon in center city and plans to send a report to the president by the end of next month. the governor is plan ining a

right now. glenn schwartz will tell us how long the rain will last in the neighborhood forecast this a moment. he he also says the reports of hail in south philly and center city. more on that in a moment. to this now. every time you grab a beer wharks you pay trickles into the local economy. new numbers show just how much. a beer industry trade group released a report showing between bars, broeweries and stores, it counts for $1 billion in delaware. $6.5 billion in new jersey. and $11.4 billion into pennsylvania's economy. as randy gyllenhaal reports, this coming weekend will be one of the biggest for beer sales. >> within the next 48 hours, the shelves that link beverages in coopersburg will be wiped clean for holiday parties and and b h barbecues. >> we have to keep stocked. this will be the number one seller over the weekend.

>> they call it crafting the future one pour at a time. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. in delaware tonight, they are moving forward with a plan for the ocean that environmen l environmentalists hate. the state gave permission to construct a an out fall. it will discharge treated waste water into the atlantic ocean. the state issued perms for the out fall saying the plan meets all legal and scientific standards. just in time for the weekend, new warning signs are most posted alerting swimmers to a possible danger at one jersey shore beach, but some say it's not enough. a dozen updated signs along north wildwoods unprotected beach feature even stronger wording like deadly currents and a real risk of drowning. brad smith was swept out to sea in 2012. his family is fighting in court toft beach closed for good.

it's definitely going to happen again. we just don't know when. to close off all wildlife areas and natural to everybody is unrealistic and unreasonable. >> a court decision ob whether to make the beach off limits is expected soon. back to our first alert weather. storms rolling through philadelphia right now. this is a lye look at conditions in south philly. glenn schwartz says there's hail. we also have reports of strong, windy conditions. >> things change quickly and move quickly. . we couldn't see anything about 15 minutes ago. and the skyline shot at center city has improved dramatically just over the last few minutes. so the core of that storm is certainly going through. we go back. we were showing you the conditions earlier that were

favorable for the development of these thunderstorms and, boy, have they exploded. but over the last hour or so or less than an hour, they have weakened. there's less loiightning in thi than the heaviest over avenuing on to and the warwarrington are. now they were getting hit pretty hard a half hour ago. so that adds up. now this also kind of unusual. hail tracking in the south and going right into south philly. we showed you this a half hour ago. low and behold, there's actual hail that has been reported in south philly. this will continue moving up to the north and the amounts of rain with doppler estimates pretty significant. in just an hour, hour and a half. and we haven't even seen the

main area. and you see the tremendous amount of lightning with that. so that's coming into wilmington at 8:40. so we're not nearly over with the threat for showers and storms. you can see how much bigger this area is. as we go to 7:30, here comes some of the heavy storms. then moving up through bucks county and farther to the north. once that moves up, things will quiet down somewhat. and by tomorrow morning's rush, it's very quiet. it might be cloudy, it might be peeks of sun too. and not a bad day tomorrow. and not a bad night tomorrow night. and not a bad day on saturday. and that's some sunshine out there. remember that? and then saturday afternoon
