our plaza is filled to capacity. an overflow crowd and maybe a little bit of traffic. >> we're going to have a great concert coming up later in the show. let's start with politics and the overnight results in a closely-watched race in montana. an unexpected turn in the final hours. greg gianforte won a seat in the house, a day after he was charged with assaulting a reporter. and during his victory speech, he apologized for his actions. >> reporter: good morning, matt and savannah. prior to last night, gianforte's only public comment was a statement issued by his campaign, where they blame the bizarre incident on the reporter. late last night, just minutes after the race was called in his favor, gianforte took a very different tone. >> i'm not proud of what happened. i should not have responded in the way that i did.

and for that, i'm sorry. >> and you're forgiven. >> reporter: a contrite gianforte, offering a public apology for the incident that threatened to derail his campaign in the 11th hour. >> i should not have treated that reporter that way. and for that, i'm sorry, mr. ben jacobs. >> reporter: the hotly contested campaign between gene fianforte rob quist, landed the candidate in hot water. >> i tried to follow up one more time. next thing, i went from vertical to horizontal. >> i'm sick and tired of you guys. the last time you came here, you did the same thing. get the hell out of here. >> reporter: gianforte's campaign offered a different version of the altercation saying, it's unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a

liberal journalist was seen. after he was charged with assault, speaker paul ryan said gianforte should apologize but he would be welcome at the capitol. the alteration changed some perception of the candidate. but in the end, his supporters rallied behind him. his campaign taking in $100,000 the day after the incident. the earliest gianforte could be sworn in is june 6th when they come back from recess. he has to take care of business here in first. he has to appear in court on that assault charge. >> garrett, thank you very much. that montana win is a win for the white house. but this morning, there's turmoil facing the trump administration. the president's son-in-law a ensenieand senior adviser is under scrutiny

in the russia investigation. we start with peter alexander. >> reporter: jared kushner may be the closest adviser to the president, making him one of the most powerful people in this country. now, the fbi is taking a closer look at kushner in its russia inquiry. that means the investigation now reaches right next to the president. this morning, the fbi's russia probe's expanding into the west wing. jared kushner senior adviser and son-in-law to president trump, now under fbi scrutiny. multiple officials tell nbc news they believe kushner has significant information relevant to her russian inquiry. he's the only current white house official that's known to be under scrutiny in the probe. the fbi is investigating whether trump campaign associates coordinated with russia to interfere in the 2016 election. but it's unclear precisely what about kushner's activities has drawn the fbi's interest. during the trump transition,

kushner met with sergey kislyak. he had a separate meeting with a russian banker. gorkov owns a development bank that's been under u.s. sanctions since 2014. although investigators are looking at kushner, they don't suspect him of a crime or intend to charge him. in a statement, they tell nbc news, mr. kushner previously volunteered to share with congress what he knows ant these meets. he will do the same in connection with any other inquiry. >> jared is a successful man in new york. >> reporter: putting the russian probe inside the white house and inside the president's family circle. spoke to several white house officials overnight. right now, the white house is not commenting. instead, redirecting us to that statement from jared kushner's lawyer. to be clear, u.s. officials say that kushner is not a target of the investigation. he's not accused of wrongdoing.

he's in a different category than the former campaign aides, paul manafort and michael flynn, who was national security adviser before being ousted. both men are considered subjects of the investigation. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. ari melber, good morning to you. to your trained legal ear, you hear suspect of a investigation target. to say under scrutiny is a vague term. what does it mean? >> it can be vague. it doesn't mean that authorities want to charge this person. it means this person has significant information about the issues under inquiry. >> he's volunteered to talk to congress about anything he knows. apparently he will do the same with the fbi. if you're jared kushner, how does finding out about this change your day-to-day life? and if you're the president and he is your trusted adviser, how does it impact your daily interactions with him? >> it's not good for the white house because they have repeatedly said that there is no there there.

the president challenging the entire legitimacy of this inquiry. this is an independent group of fact-finders. saying there's something they want to talk to him about. his lawyer put out a statement saying they haven't been contacted yet. that's the implication. but day-to-day, he has to think about his role and anything involving russia. >> can the president share any information with him during this period? or does he have to be careful? >> they are witnesses and maybe more to a whole set of potential activities. whether that includes diplomacy, which is perfectly legal. or includes questions around current or former aides did anything financially questionable or otherwise. they have to be extra careful. they have to keep running the country at the same time. ultimately, this is a white house that has tried to sweep this under the rug. this news suggests, this story is alive. >> and the fbi is looking closely. ari, thank you very much. as for the president, he's on the final leg of his first overseas trip.

the g7 in sicily. he enters it off of fresh confrontations of a nato meeting with some of the leaders he is facing today. kristen welker is traveling with the president. good morning to you. >> reporter: this morning, president trump in diplomatic damage control. as the g7 summit gets under way. the president's facing fallout from thursday's nato summit. this morning, "der spiegel" reporting that the president slashed out saying, the germans are bad, very bad. look at the millions of cars they are selling in the u.s., terrible, according to participants there. this morning, president trump, standing next to the german leader, during the group photo, as the white house weighed in. not confirming the language cited in the report but acknowledging to nbc news, the president voiced his frustration that germany is taking advantage of the u.s. still this morning, the president of the european union commission saying the story isn't true.

highly controversial. matt? savannah? >> kristen welker with the president. thanks. breaking news out of egypt this morning. officials say at least 24 people were killed and 27 others wounded after gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying christians. this happened as the bus was traveling to a monetary. nobody has claimed responsibility for in a attack. there's developments in the attack of a pop cancer in manchester, england. we're seeing new video of the suspected bomber. bill neely has more from manchester. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. one more arrest here this morning. the police are calling them all significant. and the police have resumed intelligence cooperation with u.s. intelligence agencies after that row over leaked photographs. the emotions here, still very raw. and the fears here, still very real.

it's an unrelenting manhunt. a race to stop another attack. more raids this morning. one more arrest. and for the first time in britain, armed police patrolling trains ahead of a holiday weekend. the threat level at its highest. hospitals warned to prepare for another attack. the bomber, salman abedi is dead. this is the first video of the killer, filmed by neighbors outside his home. but he had accomplices, and enough chemicals to make more bombs. his victims have been identified. so many, so young, so many dreams that died in an instant. 15-year-old megan hurley the last to be named. and this was a biker's memorial, for their hometown girl who never made it home. 15-year-old olivia campbell's mother, overcome by tears, surrounded by love. one tiny english village

melvin is on the roads. kerry sanders is on the airports. and dylan is at the busy theme parks. >> let's start with craig. 34 million americans on the roads this weekend. how is it looking where you are? >> reporter: we are in a traffic jam. we're traveling north here. north on 95 heading into the city. it's difficult to tell whether this is routine friday morning traffic heading into the city or this is memorial day traffic. you mentioned the highest number of folks on the road since 2005. roughly 88% of those people will be in a car. we wanted to give you a little help this morning. there's a number of apps out there that can help you out. this is one of my favorites. i can show you here. this is waze. most of you are probably familiar with waze, the crowdsourcing app. if you look closely, not only does it show you where the traffic is, it will show you how long you can expect to be in that traffic. and, look.

bag, your computer and that's it. but in the ten cities, they've added some issues that will make it just that much slower. first of all, if you have books, you need to take your summer reads out and take those out. say you have some food in there, turns out, you need to take your food out, as well. in other words, you're basically emptying your bag. when you add that up from person to person to person, you see there's going to be a delay. you can look online at tsa.gov and see how long the lines are going to be so you have an idea. always get to the airport early on a busy travel like today. we look at the misery map from flight aware, there's 113 delays, 24 cancellations. already, we're starting out on a day that looks like it's going to be frustrating for travelers. >> is that fabio on the cover of your summer book there? just curious. >> i know who wrote this book. this is my wife's book. >> he's doing young adult

reading, as well. let's go north of where kerry is. we're going to orlando where the holiday weekend has a very popular destination. dylan at universal studios. and all of the parks there will be busy this weekend. >> they certainly are. usually i'm the one sitting in traffic. this year, i got to come to orlando, florida, and talk amusement parks. this is one of the top destinations this memorial day weekend. you have a lot of the theme parks opening up new attractions, taking advantage of the crowds. universal studios, has opened up volcano bay, a 30-acre theme park here. disney world will open up pandora, a collaboration to bring the world of "avatar" to life. six flags tends to debut their newest attractions this time of the year because they're taking advantage of the crowds. if everyone's going to the amuse m parks, how do you beat the crowds? get here early. try to get on the rides before the crowds get too big. also, start at the back of the

and tarsdale, 62 at graduate hospital. this busy travel weekend started with a crash in the southbound lanes of the new jersey turnpike. a bus and tractor-trailer collided just after 12:30 this morning in west deptford. 32 people on board the bus that left new york. it was bound for atlanta, were injured and had to be treated at area hospitals for minor injuries. the wreck has been cleared, and the roadway reopened just after 4:30 this morning. the pennsylvania turnpike expects 2.3 million drivers on the toll road today through monday. today alone, turnpike officials project 750,000 cars will be riding the turnpike. down the shore, the mayor will unlock the sea to start the unofficial start to the summer season. this is video from last year's ceremony. the annual tradition happens at 3:00 this afternoon. back to "today." to that customability.

final after a thrilling double-overtime win over ottawa. that was 3-2. game seven double-overtime. the penguins will face the nashville predators. game one monday night. you can watch it right here on nbc. >> good stuff. also this morning, there is outrage in florida, after a man was caught on camera, unplugging a bounce house during a birthday party. and children were playing inside at the time. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in port st. lucie this morning. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. police investigating the incident. the suspect could be charged with trespassing. it was bizarre enough when parents noticed the bounce house beginning to deflate with children trapped inside. and they looked at the security video and got quite a shock. you can see the kids playing in the bounce house, when all of a sudden, with no warning, it starts losing air. just 20 seconds later, it collapses. about ten kids, some as young as 2 and 3 years old, trapped

inside. the birthday party turning into panic. >> chaos. >> reporter: glen hunt is the godfather of the birthday girl, 1-year-old diana. >> some of the kids were crying. one was traumatized by the incident. another one, when he was being removed, his leg got a little injured. >> reporter: what has people up in arms is this, a fan seen walking to the backyard, unplugging the bounce house before nonchalantly walking back across the street. there was also a deejay and music at the party. >> he believes he was pulling the plug to the deejay booth. but it pulled the plug to the bounce house. >> reporter: police know who the man in the red shirt is. they tried to question him but he was uncooperative. his wife sauce he has hired a lawyer and has declined to comment. >> that's irresponsible for somebody to do that. >> reporter: from florida to south carolina, to colorado, kids have been accidentally injured in bounce houses before, when they blew away.

capacity passenger loads and we have minimum flight attendant staffing. and people are crammed into smaller spaces. and people are stressed. >> they're stressed from the time you get in your car, face traffic, to going through tsa. when you finally get on that plane and you're going to go for three hours with nothing, this is where it gets released a lot of times. >> raise your hand if you feel tension in the skies, in planes when you're onboard planes right now? raise your hand if you feel it. >> i experience it every trip at least once. >> every trip at least once? >> yeah. >> what's the worst you've seen on a plane, in terms of people behaving badly? >> i had a passenger. the lavatory was occupied. and he did not want to wait. and he urinated right in front of the bathroom by the cockpit. and that's pretty much unacceptable. and -- >> pretty much unacceptable. that's unacceptable. yeah. and how do you handle it?

and we continue to follow breaking news in center city philadelphia. bests have been evacuated from the logan hotel at 18th and arch. it used to be the four seasons. officials tell us there was a small fire inside the hotel, but it is now under control and no one was hurt. we have more breaking news in philadelphia's overbrook neighborhood where a car hit a person at 59th and oxford this morning. we're going to get more details on the victim and the person's condition. we'll have updates on the air and on the nbc10 app. let's go now to bill henley with your neighborhood forecast.
