memorial day weekend celebrations are off and running. and overcoming tragedy through poetry. we'll take you inside a local classroom where students are expressing themselves through words to try to overcome the loss of one of their own. tonight, kicking off the summer season in style. tens of thousands of hitting the road and heading to their favorite shore points at beaches across the area for memorial day weekend. in montgomery county, the summer fun festival where hundreds came out to enjoy the rides. the rain hanging over the midwest right now could change some of your plans tomorrow. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist tammy souza is here with your most accurate forecast. >> we wanted to have one perfect day. you may have to keep the

umbrella handy all three days but not a washout. no rain out there. earlier we had spotty showers come drifting through and they are diminishing. but everybody kind of looked up to the sky and wondered if they were going to get hit with a few sprinkles and some of us did. now we are focused on this system coming out of the midwest. much of it is diving south and the best chance of showers tomorrow will be south of the metro area but we all may get showers around midday. for tonight, the temperatures very mild. we made it all the way up to 76 degrees today. 69 degree is the temperature right now. we'll drop into the mid and upper 50s. 66 in vineland, 64 in wilmington and atlantic city at 69 degrees. here's a couple of things we are watching for. overnight tonight we're going to

go clear. it is 62 degrees at 2:00 in the morning. you'll wake up in the upper 50s to low 60s. about 60 at 5:00 tomorrow morning. let's break down a couple of things. we will be dodging showers all day long. midday showers on saturday, evening and night rain on sunday and scattered rain and storms on monday. and tonight at the jersey shore, the board walks are packed with thousands who are kicking offer their summer fun with sand and sun. drew smith shows us how a.c. is doing the holiday this year. >> reporter: the boardwalks are beginning to fill up taken party is starting down here at the shore. the resort towns are counting on the weekend. atlantic city aiming for an explosives start to theunofficial beginning of summer. >> summer 2017. the jersey shore is open.

>> reporter: music and entertainment got people dancing outside the tropicana. >> thousands of people here tonight running a block party. >> reporter: at resort casino, people rushed to grab a keepsake at the beach ball drop. >> you don't have to wear the heavy coat. you don't have to deal with the snow. >> reporter: this weekend is about traditions for many families. >> fresh air, relaxation, enjoy our time together. >> reporter: the weather not quite hot enough for a dip in the atlantic but this guy went in anyway. katrina was only brave enough to put her feet in. >> it's cold but it's beautiful. >> reporter: so they will come back later in the year for the full experience, something that the businesses are counting on. >> it's a starting point. >> reporter: there are new restaurants and attractions. this is the first test for public and the early reviews have been good. i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news.

the stage is set for the first ever hoagie nation festival tomorrow. the concert is the brain child of darryl hall and john oates who will headline a show with tears for fears. and gene love stopped by the nbc 10 studios to say there could be surprise collaborations on stage tomorrow. >> the best part of being in a festival is just to get the opportunity to jam out with some of the other musicians and i'm always ready. >> the door open tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. stay up to date with your forecast all memorial day weekend. tap the nbc 10 app. right now, two police officers are in the hospital after they were involved in a car crash while on their way to a shooting. that crash happened in a philadelphia neighborhood while witnesses looked on. brandon hudson has more.

homeowners say this accident is not a surprise to them. >> reporter: that's right. neighbors say accidents at this intersection are common but they have never seen one involving cops until today. police were on their way to a shooting when a car struck them at this intersection. sky force 10 shows you the aftermath of a car crash. two police officers lying on the ground in pain. philadelphia police say a driver struck their car. >> kind of like a bang like thunder. >> reporter: the collision happened feet away from athena scott's home. >> the car got hit and two cops laying on the floor. >> reporter: her family shared this foe with us. you can see where the driver hit the police suv on the driver's side. the impact deployed the air bags in the suv. >> you walk out and the first thing you see is 20 cops on the street.

>> reporter: the officer responded to a call of a shooting at a park which was six minutes away. we learned someone shot a 23-year-old woman twice in the leg at the park. investigators recovered a weapon but didn't make an arrest and are working to find a motive. the victim will survive. both officers involved in the crash have nonlife threatening injuries. the police will look at the video from that camera on the light post to find out more about this crash. they will try to answer if the police had their sirens on. it does not appear at this time that the driver will face any charges. tonight overcoming tragedy by using their words. a local teacher is helping students channel their emotions through the power of poetry. nbc 10's keith jones is live to tell us more on their message of grieving and overcoming.

>> these three girls lost a friend in a senseless shooting an almost lost hope. >> reporter: rowling streets with graffiti on god forsaken homes. a grueling chorus outside but inside the walls there is inspiration away from the violence. >> it keeps me every single night. >> reporter: this teacher serves hope through writing encouraging these three girls to open up. >> i miss him. >> reporter: her tears fall on a white page for her classmate who was shot and killed in march. he was only 13. >> speak out to myself. it helps me think that i'm not alone. >> reporter: grammar, spelling

and punctuation. >> family members and all the people who knew him. >> these kids are up against so much. they have the deck stacked so much against them. >> reporter: so she started this enrichment writing class and what happened next? became teenaged therapy. >> we have granddaughters, daughters, sisters and survivors. >> reporter: slam poetry. >> for kids who can't read by the time they're nine. >> reporter: now nothing stops them. >> don't bother me now. >> mark our words. >> i'm not just she's black so she don't know how to read and write. there's more to me. >> we are the future, stop the hate. stop the killing, stop the violence. >> when i share my words i feel i can be myself more. >> when given a chance it's incredible what they can do.

firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames. no one was hurt. tonight, the death of a 6-week-old baby is under investigation. the boy was taken to the hospital with head injuries. his parents say they found the baby bleeding from his nose in their home. the baby had head injuries but it's unclear how he got them. the ntsb is expected to release a preliminary report in ten days about the deadly helicopter crash in delaware. the medical helicopter went down in a training exercise yesterday. he flew for penn hospital and was our backup pilot in sky force 10. he was 37 years old and leaves behind a wife and a 2-year-old with another child on the way. next, a religious community in mourning after a deadly

in allen ttown. in mt. pocono, 51 and wildwood at 59 degrees. a very comfortable night. the doppler radar beam sweeping the sky. look at the sprinkles off of the great lakes. they just kind of die out. the atmosphere is stable until this moves into the area. this could bring us showers as early as late morning tomorrow and perhaps in the afternoon. i don't think it's going to be a washout. let's go to the west. this system brought heavy snow to wyoming today. just pause to consider that. at least we don't have snow, right? this will bring severe weather to the plains. but that is our weather maker for sunday and monday. we have winds out of the west. that is a mild air mass for us. we will have clear skies tonight. tomorrow morning things are quiet at 8:30 tomorrow morning. at about 2:00 in the afternoon,

looks like scattered showers south of philadelphia. at 5:30 again maybe just a scattered spritz from that storm system. we could see more overnight in delaware and south jersey. the only thing on sunday is the winds shift to the east. it will be cooler along the beaches and maybe a sprinkle in the lehigh valley or burks county sunday afternoon but for the most part, sun will be dry. sunday night and into monday that we watch that system that was in wyoming coming through and on monday scattered showers here and there. how much rain? less than a half inch. this is not a big rainmaker for us. reading at 69 degrees. let's go to voorhees, 72. newark, 71.
