good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the president was hoping his first foreign trip would help turn the page on the negative headlines on the russia probe. but he's back at the white house and the scrutiny deepening. with his son-in-law at the center of some of the latest revelations. this morning, the president is back on defense. president trump returning to washington from his first foreign trip. and bracing for battle, after "the washington post" reported over the weekend, his son-in-law, jared kushner, tried to set up a back channel for communicating with the russians in december, before the inauguration. kushner is now a focus in the russian investigation by the fbi app a source familiar with the thinking inside the white house, a few people suggested that kushner should lay low for a while. the trump administration on defense. >> it's normal and unacceptable. any way you can communicate with people, particularly organizations not particularly

friendly to us, is a good thing. >> reporter: attorney mark cass wits who will represent the president in the russia proep, was spotted talking to icavanka trump. and mr. trump who stayed off social media on the trip, was back on twitter. it's my opinion that many of the leaks coming out of the white house are fabricated lies. other republicans backing him up. >> i don't trust this story as far as i can throw it. >> reporter: on "meet the press," former director of national intelligence, james clapper, had a different take on a back channel. >> i will tell you that, my dashboard warning light was clearly on. that was a the case with all of the us in the intelligence committee. >> reporter: and some democrats pounced on kushner. >> there ought to be a review of his security clearance to find out if he was truthful. >> reporter: after trump was given warm welcomes in saudi arabia and israel, he may have roiled allies in europe,

scolding nato allies for failing to pay their fair share. angela merkel saying america can't the trusted, saying we as yurms must take our destiny into our own hands. as for kushner, it's important to point out that he's not the subject of the investigation. and those familiar with the matter say he's focused on work and is eager to cooperate with any investigation. and despite buzz about him laying low, there's no indication the president shares that view. mr. trump telling "the new york times," jared is doing a great job for the country and has total confidence in him. the president will lay a wreath at arlington national cemetery and delivering remarks. >> kristen, thank you. john harwood is cnbc's editor at large. let's start with the war room idea that the white house is supposedly setting up to combat revelations related to the russia probe.

if you consider that a lot of the revelations seem to be coming from inside the administration, how effective can this war room be? >> well, it's a huge challenge for them because this is not simply an argument between the president and members of the other party. in is an argument or a conflict between the president, his own fbi, his own cia, his own justice department, where there's a special counsel investigating all of these matters involving russia. and i have to say, this report, if true, of jared kushner trying to start a secret back channel using russian facilities, is not normal. it's not usual. there's not really a good explanation for it. we'll have to see if the report proves to be correct. >> you mentioned that "the new york times" has reported that a back channel was proposed to discuss syria and other national security issues. if that's the case, then is there any justifiable reason then why they needed to, you know, use secretly communicate

with the russians or diplomatic facilities without including the pentagon? >> to use russian facilities to do that? no, there isn't. and it raises basic questions of what side jared kushner and the -- his associates within the trump transition were on. and if you look at the results, sheinel sheinelle, of this foreign trip, the strains that kristen mentioned in her piece, between the united states, members of nato, angela merkel, french president macron, that's a principal goal of the russians to weaken the western alliance. you see what the long-term consequences was, but it seems to accomplish what vladimir putin wanted to accomplish. >> mr. kushner wrapped up in the investigation. and reports that the president

was pressuring jim comey to let the investigation go. the president asking his intel chiefs also to push back on the fbi investigation. to you, what picture is emerging? >> it's a picture of a white house and a set of actors within the white house, jared kushner, michael flynn's no longer there, in deep trouble. this is a serious investigation. robert mueller is a very serious person, who takes the concerns of the intelligence committee seriously. i'm not sure a war room of operatives in the white house is adequate to the task. i this i they have big problems. this happens at a time when they're entire legislative agenda is struggling. they don't have a tax plan yet. the health care plan is nowhere to pass the house, extremely unpopular. the senate hasn't moved yet. that's why you see the president lashing out at the fake news media and accusing people of making up stories, which journalists are not making up

scheduled demonstration of the navy's elite leapfrogs parachute team, which performs throughout the country. made up of active duty navy s.e.a.l.s, the unit performs jumps from as high as 12,000 people. the victim's name has not been released. authorities are waiting to notify his family. and now, an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the malfunction. now, that same parachute team was scheduled to hold an event in citi field in new york city today. they've canceled that event, given yesterday's tragedy. authorities will release the name of that s.e.a.l. 24 hours after they notify his family. we're learning more about a suspect of a deadly shooting rampage in mississippi. in all, eight people killed, including a sheriff's deputy. maya rodriguez has the latest on that investigation. maya, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig.

and an opening in california took a giant turn when a boy was flung from a water slide. steve patterson has more on that. >> reporter: you can see it behind me. the slide the boy was on was nearly 50 feet tall and an 80-degree drop. as you see, the boy was moving fast when he hit the pavement. a trip to a brand-new water park in holiday weekend takes a horrifying turn. and the whole thing is caught on camera. a 10-year-old sliding off the end of a three-story water slide at california's the wave water park and slamming into the ground at high speed. >> i thought he was dead at first. he hit the ground pretty hard. you hear it. >> reporter: incredibly the boy gets right back up, escaping the spill with only minor injuries that were treated at a local hospital. >> he had some scraping on his back. once again, we checked him out fully. he was talking to us and laughing and smiling and was in

good spirits. >> reporter: this is the latest in a series of recent accidents at water parks across the country. last summer, a 10-year-old kansas boy was killed, going down the world's tallest water slide at schlitterban water park. this month, his family received a $20 million settlement. some are wondering who is holding the parks accountable. >> there's no federal regulations or reporting requirements for amusement parks or water parks. >> reporter: 24 states have comprehensive state inspection programs. other states leave oversight to the private sector or have minimal requirements. six states have no regulations at all. >> we have been testing that slide for a couple of weeks.ceie state of california. >> more than 4,200 people are year are taken to the e.r. for

investigation. and despite any buzz about him laying low, there's no indication the president shares that view. mr. trump defending him to "the new york times," saying, quote, jared is doing a great job for the country and he has total confidence in him. as for strategy, the white house is setting up a war room to respond to the russia controversy. and the president is expected to hit the road and hold more rallies. as for the president's overseas trip he may have roiled some allies abroad by saying in nato they're not paying their fair share. as for today, the president will keep the focus on memorial day. he'll lay a wreath at arlington national cemetery and then deliver remarks. >> kristen, thank you. this morning, we're hearing from one young women who said she was the subject of slurs.

now, the good shaamaritans who tried to help are being honored for their courage. >> he saved the lives of two muslim women. >> reporter: a surge of emotions by fresh tragedy. the portland community coming together to honor two men killed during a stabbing on a commuter train. >> we lost two great humans, people willing to put themselves into harm's way on their daily commute. >> reporter: rick best died along with 23-year-old talishian remembered by his sister through tears. >> everything he did in his life, he had purpose. >> one was stabbed in the neck and the other in the stomach. >> reporter: the brutal train attack happened friday during the afternoon rush, when a passenger, identified as 35-year-old jeremy christian, suddenly went on a hate-filled tirade, according to witnesses, spewing anti-muslim remarks at

two, young women. the rant prompting three men to confront christian, who police say pull eed a knife. >> they lost their lives. >> reporter: one of the women targeted expressing gratitude for the men who came to their defense. >> i want to say thank you to them and their family. that i appreciate them. because without them, we probably would be dead right now. >> reporter: her appreciation now echoing across an entire city. the surviving victim, mica fletcher, is recovering from his injuries in a portland hospital. as for the suspect, jeremy christian has a criminal record. he has a history of hate speech on social media. dramatic video has surfaced showing a terrifying encounter between a kayaker and a great white shark. it was like a horror movie.

that served this nation so proudly. it's also time for reflection, thinking about those who lost their lives in battle. there's a host of foundations out there doing good work to support our military families. and this morning, donald rumsfeld is here with ryan manion to highlight the travis manion foundation, named after her brother who died in iraq. their mission is connecting those who serve in the military to engage in character-building together. >> thank you. great to be with you. >> let me start with you. i know there's been a movement afoot over the last few years to remind folks that memorial day isn't just the unofficial start of summer. what is memorial day to secretary rumsfeld? >> for me, it's a time when we remember the people who served and the people who have fallen and their families. and the travis manion foundation has a purpose of meeting and talking to people all across the

country. they have presenters who go out from families and veterans, to talk to people about it. i was one of the original sponsors of legislation for the all-volunteer military. we have the greatest military on the face of the earth. there were a lot of people that weren't connected to the military. this foundation, the travis manion foundation is particularly important because they connect people who may not have relatives in the military with the military. and they get a chance to hear the stories of people who served and meet the families of people who served. >> ryan, tell us about your brother. tell us about travis. >> my mother was my best friend. we're 15 months apart. brew up grew up in a military family. we understand the meanling of service. we understood it from a very young age. but it wasn't until he lost his life in 2007 that we began to understand the meaning of

sacrifice. and i always say travis would be very proud of the work that's happening at the travis manion foundation. but he would be terribly upset to know that we named it the travis manion foundation. like many men and women in our military, their incredibly humble. they just want to get out there. they're the epitome of what servant leadership is all about. >> i understand that you met at travis' graduation, isn't that right? >> at a wrestling match. >> he was a wrestler. >> and you're a wrestler. >> i'm a brokendown exwrestler. that's a long time ago. but i'm partial to wrestlers. and he was a good one. >> i understand that your foundation just announced a $500,000 donation to the ryan manion foundation. why this particular group? and i want to ask what this money will be used for. >> this group is doing something distinctive. it's connecting people who haven't served with families and

for the cast of "the love boat." for ten seasons, the cast made viewers want to jump on the ship headed for any destination. >> the show debuted 40 years ago. we caught up with the cast. gavin macleod played captain steuben. cynthia lauren tewes played julie mccoy. and the purser, gopher, played by fred grandey. gavin, let me start with you, you were the captain. why do you think this show captured so many imaginations 40 years ago? this was a huge hit. >> it was never done on television before. this was the first big show on a

cruise ship with over 1,000 guest stars all over the world. and had three different stories. had the happy endings are something that people love. i always loved that as a viewer. and people love happy endings. and that was one of the goals aaron spelling had putting the show together. and we were able to bring the world to television viewers because after the first few years, we went all over europe. you know, china. just name it. and that's where we were. representing the united states and having a great time. as a result, people wanted to take cruises. we started with two small ships. and princess cruises has eight magnificent ships with two more on the way. it's successful because it's giving people what they want. and it's fulfilling dreams. i've been doing this so many years. i was young when i started. if you can believe it, i had hair. i never had hair.

noise. >> we have the different spices here. we recommend starting out with some loin back or baby back ribs. >> we have salt, pepper, ground mustard, onion powder, garlic poud i powder, cayenne and paprika. we're going to put this on first and we're going to top with brown sugar. >> on your ribs, do you pull the membrane off the back? >> you can if you buy them from a local butcher shop. it's not hard to do at all. i'm going to sprinkle this on here. >> both sides? >> i like to do it on both sides. you betcha. we'll do one here. we're going to rub it in really good. we're going to take some of the brown sugar and give it a nice coat there. >> after the brown sugar, we're going to take them and put them in the oven at 350 for 2 1/2

life. >> he did almost die on the helicopter. there was a nurse that held his wound down with her own body so he did not bleed out. >> reporter: zach was air-lifted to germany and then to walter reed. but as is the case with so many soldiers, while rhyner was back in his homeland, he was in a forced military retirement. >> the military was all i knew in my whole adult life. it was hard to make that transition. especially when you deal with having a life-changing injury. >> reporter: each day was a battle, physically and emotionally. the wounds on his shattered leg, paralyzed from the knee down, took more than a year to heel. >> i mean, i contemplated suicide. i was in an incredible amount of pain. >> reporter: helping him through it all, then-girlfriend jillian, who he proposed to from his hospital bed.

>> he said, i don't feel it's fair to you to go through all of this. >> reporter: their marriage helped the healing enormously. and rhyner's decision to go back to school in medical care. >> i would like to get a job working with the v.a. that would be the ultimate goal. >> our community welcomes you to be our newest resident. >> reporter: and the final moment of magic that would make this soldier feel at home again, an organization called helping hero hearn rhyner's story and helped him and his family make a fresh start in a new custom-designed house. >> it's a major problem that these warriors are forgotten about. we want to make sure they are able to not have so much attention on where they live, how they're living. and that they can move forward with whatever game they want to play in life. >> helping a hero provides financial assistance, offsetting the cost of customized houses

for deserving veterans throughout the nation. we were there this month to watch the rhyners receive keys to their home. it was designed for their family and rhyner's needs. the home is equipped with special showers where he will no longer slip. the master bedroom is on the main floor so he will no longer have to struggle with stairs. and there's wider doorways throughout, so if he becomes wheelchair bound, the family is prepared. >> it's not to say that i'm not going to require an amputation or hip replacement down the line. there's potential to end up back in the wheelchair. >> reporter: best of all, the home is representative of the family's new lease on life. >> i feel like this house really symbolizes like the next chapter in trying to move on. injury's always going to be there.
