the shore at cape may, but will thing improve before people have to pack up and head home? >> good morning. i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm katy zachry. you might think you'll have to cancel that barbecue, but that's not necessarily the case. >> chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. >> hi, vai. a gloomy start to the day, and we still have clouds around and you can see the top of the comcast building cut off and that means the clouds are low. we do have some showers moving through to philadelphia itself, but this is the last of it, back to the west it's dry. farther to the south it is dry and so this is the last of the rain. this is light, but it's taking its time moving through over the next couple of hours. that rain will be moving out. now we do have still a lot of cloud cover around as you can see here, but you may be seeing

some breaks through the southern portions of the jersey shore later on during the day today. >> here is the future cast, hour by hour. you can see some of this clearing taking place in south jersey, delaware, and nothing more than an isolated shower this afternoon. most of us are just not going to get any rain this afternoon and again, conditions improving hour by hour as we go through the rest of the day. it's 59 now. only 60 at the shore, so it is cool, but as you can see, the temperatures stay in the 60s across most of the area today, but you don't see those raindrops, the 71 degrees in parts of delaware and at the jersey shore, for example, cloudy skies most of the day, but later on, at least a little bit of sunshine. we'll see what the rest of the week holds. >> memorial day is more than

just barbecues and the unofficial start of summer. >> there are events around our area today to help people remember the true meaning of this holiday. pamela osbourne is live in media with a look at one of them and how delaware county is marking the day. >> reporter: hi, katy, vai, the parade was meaningful for the people gathered here today to observe the holiday. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: that's the pencrest marching band performing along the parade route. they were joined by veterans organizations and a handful of others as they made their way to the courthouse for a ceremony. we spoke to one woman who brought her granddaughter to the parade. she tells us it's important for her to understand that the freedoms she is growing up with did not come without sacrifice. here's what memorial day means to her. >> it's celebrating our freedom and thankful for our veterans that went to war. my father was a marine. my son-in-law is a marine and my

killed inside their kensington home. police say they were found yesterday inside a second-floor bedroom of a house on clearfield street. a woman who identified herself as the sister of the victims has a message for the killer. >> we are coming for you. we're going to get you, believe me. it's not the end. >> our brother raymond, first of all, was a good brother. he didn't deserve that. tina was a god-fearing woman. she didn't deserve that. >> neighbors say they hadn't seen the woman since friday, but it is not clear when the pair was killed. no weapon has been found. a suspect is under arrest in the deadly double stabbing. nbc 10 was on the scene on frankfurt avenue. the violence inside an apartment last night left one man dead and another in critical condition. investigators are trying to determine a motive. >> to south jersey now, a hazmat situation is under control in cumberland county, neighbors in millville reported a strong

smell of sulfur on north 8th and e streets last night. first responders and crews found a chlorine leak and so far there have been no reports of anyone injured or sick. >> oh -- >> the lehigh valley now, you just saw a barn collapse after a fire in north hampton county. a viewer shared this video with us of a barn coming down in lehigh township. firefighters blocked off traffic on cedar drive for people's safety. no animals were inside the barn and no one was inside either. it is unclear what started the fire. >> today south jersey, the aquarium is wrapping up shark awareness weekend. guests can find out about shark species, medical care and shark behavior. guests can donate money to will go to the non-profit for research and tickets for $10 for military members. >> that knowledge may come in handy as there are two great white sharks swimming off the

his security clearance to find out whether he was truthful. >> this morning the president gave a statement of support for kushner to "the new york times." the president told "the new york times," quote, jared is doing a great job for the country. i have total confidence in him. he is respected by virtually everyone and is working on programs that will save our country billions of dollars. in addition to that, and more importantly, he is a very good person. a fund-raising effort for the families of three men has topped nearly $800,000. the amount of money raised continues to grow included on a fund-raising page set up by a muslim organization. the men were attacked as they came to the aid of two young women who were being attacked by a man yelling anti-muslim serves. >> a man who tried to help said he's never seen -- >> i have never been prepared for two men, knife down in an attack.

>> the suspect, jeremy christian was arrested on murder and attempted murder charges. south korea's president has called for a security meeting just hours after north korea conducted another missile test. the u.s. military says north korea fired what appears to be a short-rangetñoff their east coast this morning. the missile was tracked for six minutes until it landed in the sea of japan. that's 280 miles from where it launched. on sunday, north korea also claimed to have tested a new type of anti-aircraft-guided weapon. >> arrests continue in england in connection with last week's manchester suicide bombing. right now british police have 14 people in custody linked to the attack and today police announced on twitter that a 23-year-old man was arresteded on suspicion of terrorism. a neighbor said the arrest comes as a surprise. >> it was on my way home and going to my girlfriend's house and there were police and i

didn't know what was going on. >> 22 people died when a bomb went off minutes after an ariana grande concert ended a week ago. john mccain commemorated, australia, a staunch u.s. ally sense troops to fight in several u.s. wars to fight alongside soldiers, iraq, vietnam and korea. >> a water park in san francisco is looking into this situation. a 10-year-old boy launched right off a water slide. take a look at this child flying off the three-story slide. the boy only suffered scrapes and bruises, amazingly. the park is investigating what went wrong. now your nbc 10 first-alert weather. >> well, here we come back. and here comes the last of the rain, all right?

it looks pretty ugly out here in center city. the flags are blowing, but it's going to be improving this afternoon. it's going to take a while, but it's going to be improving. 59 degrees. cloudy skies out there right now. we've got clouds across the area. some raindrops on the lenses in delaware, also in parts of new jersey, but as we take a look at the radar, you will see improvement. now it's not going to improve a whole lot at the shore. they see a brightening of the skies and there's sunshine later today. it's not going to warm up a whole lot with the rain coming in off the ocean and 60 in cape may point and 69 in wholegate so it's not going to be a beautiful, sunny day, but this afternoon it's okay for the barbecue coming up. don't give up on the outdoor activities, improve some for the shore during this afternoon.

the next threat of rain comes in tomorrow morning and it will have to wait until wednesday for 80-degree temperatures. we've had temperatures well below normal for quite a while now. today, not even reaching 70 degrees so there's the last of the rain showers moving through. these are light, as you can see on the radar except for right near trenton right now and little patches of light rain moving to the east so just be a little patient and we have dry air moving in from the west and also dry air will build up from the south and then we have a little gap until the next system comes in. so here we are during the afternoon. by 3:00, you can see we've got sunshine here in south jersey. i'm not necessarily expecting a bright, sunny afternoon, but certainly better than it is right now. by 6:00, it's not too bad and it's dry.

this evening, not too bad, nice and dry. a lot of clouds by tomorrow morning and low clouds and fog and we may see some showers and even some thunderstorms in the morning hours for the most part tomorrow, and then a lot of clouds, too. so it's not necessarily going to be a beautiful day tomorrow. another round of showers or storms tomorrow night. so what do we have here? we have temperatures in the 60s today with the rain ending. tuesday, we've got some more showers and storms at the jersey shore. it's chilly tomorrow, but temperatures will be going up toward the rest of the week. vai? >> all right. thank you, glenn. a unique theater production is under way in philadelphia. >> it tells the story of slavery by bringing back voices from the past. we'll explain how coming up. ♪ ♪ >> another live look at the

this is nbc 10 news. a new local theater production is bringing voices from the past into the present. this new work examines the journey of african-american slaves from the time they were captured until they were freed. it's called one more river to cross, and joining us now to tell us more about the show is director james jackson. thank you for joining us and also next to james is sarah osi scott, one of the story tellers of the show. >> tell us a little bit how you took stories from the past from actual slaves and put it on the stage. >> well, the script is written by pulitzer prize winner lynn notage and she takes the

narratives from the writer's project which is part of the wpa in the 1930s and combines them into an arc that creates an arc about slavery all of the way from the africans captured through the emancipation. what did you find most interesting about these stories? >> what's amazing is that art. usually when you have a historical document it doesn't connect, you know. there doesn't seem to be a whole -- there's just, sometimes, you know, the interest can't be held, and lynn did an excellent effort in making this into one, solid narrative. >> osi tell us about your role in the show. >> sure. my role as one of the story tellers, i am woman, number one. they're storytellers, although my character is listed as woman number one, i actually speak the

voices of 13 individuals. so 13 former slaves who were interviewed during the federal writers project as lynn adapted the play, each character speaks the voice of multiple characters. and so it's very multi-facetted and it's hard to really describe a specific character because i had the voice of so many. >> what's it like, though, being the voice, right? of so many former slaves because these stories are true accounts. >> humbling. it's humbling and heavy. the gravity of this piece is so much that every day i'm grateful, and my mission is to give respect to those ancestors who went before me so that i can accurately portray their stories and highlight how important they were in the arc of history. >> james, let me ask you. how are people responding to it? it just opened this past weekend.

and the wind is coming in off the ocean, but this is the last batch of the rain. you can see it's dry back to the west and we don't anticipate any more developing. so it was right over philadelphia and now it's moved into new jersey. so the progression continues. we've been telling you since last week that the best part of memorial day is going to be in the -- toward the end of the day and we're still expecting that, and maybe a little bit of sunshine in parts of southern delaware and extreme south jersey, but there's still a lot of clouds around and once the rain goes out, at least things will improve a little bit. you can see on the futurecast, some of that sunshine developing later on during the afternoon. we'll see how the rest of the week's shaping up coming up. glenn, thank you. >> happening right now, this is a live look at arlington national cemetery where president trump is speaking at a

in world war ii and was severely wounded by german fire. in just a few weeks bob will be celebrating his 94th birthday. its hour of need. today, a new generation of american patriots are fighting to win the battle against terrorism, risking their lives to protect our citizens from an enemy that uses the murder of innocents to wage war when on humanity itself. we are joined today by the wife of specialist christopher horton who rests on these so beautiful grounds. as jane tells us, chris was a man who loved his country with every part of his being. in 2008, chris enlisted in the oklahoma army national guard. he trained as a sniper, becoming known as one of the best shots anywhere at any time.

he was a talented, tough guy. while chris was in the national guard, he was also a volunteer police officer, in everything he did he was thinking about how he could serve god, serve his family and serve his country. in 2011 he deployed for the first time to afghanistan. chris knew his job was one of the most dangerous there was, but he was determined to go after the enemy at any cost to himself. his mission helped target terrorists who helped to destroy innocent people. just two months after his first deployment chris was near the pakistan border trying to eliminate an enemy cell that was doing so much damage, and that was planting deadly roadside

bombs against his unit, and the units of many others. standing watch with his comrades, he died in the ensuing gun battle with enemy forces. chris sacrificed his life to protect his fellow soldiers, and to protect all americans. he was awarded the purple heart and bronze star for his courage. at only 26 years old, chris secured his place in our hearts for eternity. jane, america grieves with you. our whole, entire nation sends you our support, our strength and our deep, deep love.

you lost your husband and america lost a hero, and together, we will preserve his memory today, tomorrow and always. thank you, jane. on this memorial day we want to tell you about a golf tournament tomorrow that will honor military members. the philadelphia trust pga classic starts tomorrow in plymouth. to join us more to tell us about it are kevin mccluskey and the ceo of hartford trust. let me start with you, first of all, you lost both your legs and it didn't stop you from golfing and you lost it on a tour of duty in afghanistan, but tomorrow you're going to tee off the -- you're going to start the tournament off by hitting the first ball, and you also talk about how much golf has helped you as you assimilate back into civilian life. tell me about that. >> yeah. it was weird how it came about. i was just out with a few friends and we weren't -- i wasn't planning on golfing, and i didn't want to, but they

talked mead into hitting a ball. >> you never golfed before you lost your legs? >> i'd never golfed until four and a half years ago, and i ended up hitting the ball and it kind of went straight, so i figured i would give it a try. >> look at the video of you that's pretty awesome. are you nervous at all when you line up on the first tee? did you do this before? >> i did it one time before, and it was tough because everybody is staring at you and you're, like -- >> people are lining up along the -- >> yeah, it was a little nerve-racking, but i ended up hitting a 3 wood instead of a driver because i didn't want to shank it in the woods. >> he's doing fine. he's a 13 handicap. >> yeah. >> your company will present a donation to the pga hope foundation. tell us more about that foundation and how it helps veterans by providing free golf instruction. >> in a small way, it's our way

of giving back and honoring and being grateful for the service and the dedication and the commitment and sacrifice that kevin and the men and women that serve in our military have given us in protecting us. so it's an opportunity for the sectional pros to give them free lessons, to give them services throughout the course of the whole year and have them assimilate back into society. >> kevin, getting back to you, we're showing you playing and the guys jumping around who are playing with you. you know, it strikes me that people who do play golf, and i play golf. i love the game, but you play for a different reason. i feel like you play it in part because it helps -- it helps you get your mind off a lot of things that most of us don't even deal with. >> it is. i think that's been the biggest change. you know, when i came home i did

50s, but you see it in delaware where it was raining a few hours ago, things are drying up a little bit and the temperature, well, it's still on the chilly side and much of the area, 59 in greenville, talliville, claymont and 60 in the point and around 60 even at the delaware beaches. obviously, not a great beach day. we had the onshore winds now and as we go through the afternoon it's going to stay onshore. it's going to keep it cool at the beaches even if the sun starts coming out. tomorrow morning it's still an onshore wind. tomorrow afternoon it's still an onshore wind. can't get warm at the beaches as long as the wind is from that direction, but as we head into wednesday, there it goes. so the weather pattern changes somewhat and it can get warmer with that kind of pattern. here's the last of those raindrops coming through the

area. it's coming through pretty rapidly and now mostly in burlington county, and that will tp continue to move toward the shore and we're drying out in philadelphia and more so to the west and still a lot of clouds, but we may see some breaks in that as we head into the later portion of the day. we have some moisture back to the west that could be affecting us by tomorrow morning. so cloudy, but dry this afternoon. as you can see, temperatures only in the 60s for the most part and perhaps a little bit milder. you can see a little peek of sunshine late in the day, but you can't count on a beautiful, sunny afternoon and it's better than it is now. tonight, you can start to see low clouds and patchy fog throughout the area and we start tomorrow with cloudy skies, no doubt about that and we have the threat of some thunderstorms

an associate director of clinical medicine at temple university. welcome to you both. y is reasserena, tell us about silowam. >> it was born out of conviction in 1990. the brainstorm happened and we opened our doors in 1995 in the epidemic was still at its height and people were tragically dying. >> what specifically, do you do for those afflicted? >> we really want people to get that to emotional wellness that stigma with aids and hiv is hard. people don't realize it, but it's still there. >> because that can do so much damage. >> the emotional wellness, so we try to let people come and flourish, feel good about themselves and do wellness centers, have a massage and we have so many who said nobody has touched me in 18 years, want my

hands and coming and getting a massage for that individual was just tremendous. >> jennifer, let me ask you. you're a doctor, talk to us about the wellness that it provides and the importance to the patients? >> it is very important. we as physicians can do so much. >> with medicine. >> yeah. the medicine that we provide does -- it is so much easier for patients to take and i like to say that hiv is forgotten, but not gone, but there is so much stigma now that has not, unfortunately, gone away and one of the things we like to say about silowan that we as physicians take care of the illness, but silowan provides wellness. we're partners in taking care of hiv patients and silowam really provides such great spiritual
