london. let's get right to nbc 10 ea's deanna durante to see how the fire department is trying to keep you safe. >> reporter: investigators here at the spring garden headquarters did hold a news conference a little while ago along with the mayor and red cross announcing if you need free smoke detectors they are available to everyone and also stressing the orns of having an escape plan so you and your family can get out quickly. going door to door. >> we feel every fire death and every injury. our hearts really do go out to those survivors, to the families. >> despite the flames, firefighters were able to bring one child from the home. even if the house had working smoke detectors that only gives the family less than two minutes to get out alive. >> help is on the way for those

who live nearby. they will give out 9,000 free smoke detectors this yeefr. the red cross will give out even more. >> reporter: that's only part of what's need ed ed to e prevent loss of life. the mayor and red cross are urging you to check in on elderly neighbors to make sure they have escape routes and so do local families. practice fire prevention never leaving cooking items unattended. the cause will take time to. figure out. the building is so badly damaged investigators can't get inside for a better look. but this it fire did not have to be deadly. it's demoralizing. folks do feel this. i was at the scene. it's a tragedy. we stood there as we brought out the victims.

helping to prevent the strong thunderstorm thunderstorms. going to start seeing some delays at the airport as visibility goes down. this is the last of the showers moving offshore. it was severe earlier, but it moves into this cool, cloudy, stable flow. it just dies out. this is not quite dying out. we still have some rain. it was down and redeveloped near long port. some of that on the heavy side. but this is what we have been tracking. that's good news. we don't need any severe thunderstorms, but the fog is going to be the story when you get up in the morning.

street shot in the shoulder. he's expected to be okay. so far no arrests in the case. a 7-eleven employee is recovering after he was shot on the job. two masked men entered the store and demand money from the clerk. one of the robbers shot the clerk in the shoulder when he couldn't open a register quickly enough. one person of interest has been taken into custody. jury deliberations resume today in the trial of a man accused of killing his 3-year-old son. today the jurors spent more than three hours asking questions and looking at evidence against dj creato including the police interrogation video and dj's social media activity. league experts say the jury could be focusing more ob concrete evidence like those reports. >> new at 6:00, police officers are learning a secondcr langua.

drivers in a popular jersey shore community need to ease a bit off the gas just in time for summer. they have dropped the speed limit on one of its busiest streets. they are citing safety, but some wonder if money also motivated the move. ted greenberg with the story.

>> reporter: atlantic avenue n the busy summer season and is dangerous combination of cars, bikes, joggers and walkers. >> try to cross the street and whoa, they are going way too fast. >> reporter: city leaders are trying to reduce the risk of accidents on this congested street running the length of the community parallel to the beach. the speed limit just lowered this month on atlantic avenue from 35 to 25 miles per hour. >> people seem to be out of control. if we can save one person tr having an accident, this decision is well worth it. >> my father has been in a bicycle accident. i'm happy for the safety meas e measures. >> reporter: on social media one suggestion that enforcement of the slower speed limit could lead to an increase in revenue for the city and some people said off camera they also believe money might have been a contributing factor, not so says the mayor.

coast. and the stuff from central pennsylvania weakening and we just saw the story on march gate is running. these storms have really weakened as they crossed central pennsylvania. they move into this cool, dense air and that causes the storms to fall apart. but we could see a few showers or a little bit of drizzle in parts of the area tonight. and then tomorrow temperatures get 79 degrees by late in the day. the fog all morning, no rain on thursday or friday leaves temperatures getting up to 80 or near 80s. we have two really nice days and you're also going to probably like saturday for the most part. near 80 degrees. the shower threat is basically
