london. let's get right to nbc 10 ea's deanna durante to see how the fire department is trying to keep you safe. >> reporter: investigators here at the spring garden headquarters did hold a news conference a little while ago along with the mayor and red cross announcing if you need free smoke detectors they are available to everyone and also stressing the orns of having an escape plan so you and your family can get out quickly. going door to door. >> we feel every fire death and every injury. our hearts really do go out to those survivors, to the families. >> despite the flames, firefighters were able to bring one child from the home. even if the house had working smoke detectors that only gives the family less than two minutes to get out alive. >> help is on the way for those

who live nearby. they will give out 9,000 free smoke detectors this yeefr. the red cross will give out even more. >> reporter: that's only part of what's need ed ed to e prevent loss of life. the mayor and red cross are urging you to check in on elderly neighbors to make sure they have escape routes and so do local families. practice fire prevention never leaving cooking items unattended. the cause will take time to. figure out. the building is so badly damaged investigators can't get inside for a better look. but this it fire did not have to be deadly. it's demoralizing. folks do feel this. i was at the scene. it's a tragedy. we stood there as we brought out the victims.

helping to prevent the strong thunderstorm thunderstorms. going to start seeing some delays at the airport as visibility goes down. this is the last of the showers moving offshore. it was severe earlier, but it moves into this cool, cloudy, stable flow. it just dies out. this is not quite dying out. we still have some rain. it was down and redeveloped near long port. some of that on the heavy side. but this is what we have been tracking. that's good news. we don't need any severe thunderstorms, but the fog is going to be the story when you get up in the morning.

we'll tell you when it's going to break up and the temperatures go up with the forecast coming up. >> the impact of the latest twitter tirade honing in on germany. following a series of summit meetings with european leaders, the president sent this tweet saying we have a massive trade deficit with germany. plus they pay far less than they should on nato and military. very bad for u.s. this will change. >> the u.s. has a trade deficit as the president talked about, but some argue the relationship benefits us as well creating jobs here at home. the question is how will politics and pressure change things. on south street, there are offerings in german language on the wall and beer at the ready.

>> i'm not going to get into what the president did or did not discuss. what the question assumes is a lot of facts that are not substantiated by anything but anonymous sources so far being leaked out. new at 6:00, the former local fire chief is pleading guilty to charges he distributed child porn from a department computer. the state announced the plea deal for john toruso. he stored and distributed hundreds of child pornography images from inside the fire station. he was arrested in june of 2015. they will recommend six years in prison. philadelphia's kensing on to neighborhood, a shooting is being investigated that left a 14-year-old dead. she was found in the 2000 block of orleans. he died tr his injuries. a second teen was found on birks

street shot in the shoulder. he's expected to be okay. so far no arrests in the case. a 7-eleven employee is recovering after he was shot on the job. two masked men entered the store and demand money from the clerk. one of the robbers shot the clerk in the shoulder when he couldn't open a register quickly enough. one person of interest has been taken into custody. jury deliberations resume today in the trial of a man accused of killing his 3-year-old son. today the jurors spent more than three hours asking questions and looking at evidence against dj creato including the police interrogation video and dj's social media activity. league experts say the jury could be focusing more ob concrete evidence like those reports. >> new at 6:00, police officers are learning a secondcr langua.

operator errors led to a partial meltdown of one reactor. they have seen five years of steady financial loss 37. this thursday two coal fired power plants in new jersey will shut down. the mercer and hudson jgeneratin stations are closing due to steep competition from the natural gas industry. employees were notified of the pending slowtures lst year. the plants are located in hamilton township and jersey city. fans of the rocky statue got in their last photo ops before the statue was close d off toda. crews in philadelphia's parks and reck department cordoned off the statue to make improvements to it. later this week, they will be installing some orn the l fencing and replacing paving on the ground. >> it's rocky that's sim a symbol. >> i had to come out and see it. >> the statue will be off limits

drivers in a popular jersey shore community need to ease a bit off the gas just in time for summer. they have dropped the speed limit on one of its busiest streets. they are citing safety, but some wonder if money also motivated the move. ted greenberg with the story.

>> reporter: atlantic avenue n the busy summer season and is dangerous combination of cars, bikes, joggers and walkers. >> try to cross the street and whoa, they are going way too fast. >> reporter: city leaders are trying to reduce the risk of accidents on this congested street running the length of the community parallel to the beach. the speed limit just lowered this month on atlantic avenue from 35 to 25 miles per hour. >> people seem to be out of control. if we can save one person tr having an accident, this decision is well worth it. >> my father has been in a bicycle accident. i'm happy for the safety meas e measures. >> reporter: on social media one suggestion that enforcement of the slower speed limit could lead to an increase in revenue for the city and some people said off camera they also believe money might have been a contributing factor, not so says the mayor.

the river. by tomorrow morning, you may not be able to see that. that's when the fog gets more dense. keeping the temperature down, it's only 62 for high today in philadelphia. didn't even get that warm. at the shore, it's 59 at summers point in ocean city. 61 in cape may point. that's going to be one of the cool spots in our area. near 80 degrees late tomorrow. inland and then 80s on friday. thunderstorms and a chance tonight, but coming later on wednesday and wednesday evening. and sunshine for thursday. finally. now the radar showing the last of the rain moving off the

coast. and the stuff from central pennsylvania weakening and we just saw the story on march gate is running. these storms have really weakened as they crossed central pennsylvania. they move into this cool, dense air and that causes the storms to fall apart. but we could see a few showers or a little bit of drizzle in parts of the area tonight. and then tomorrow temperatures get 79 degrees by late in the day. the fog all morning, no rain on thursday or friday leaves temperatures getting up to 80 or near 80s. we have two really nice days and you're also going to probably like saturday for the most part. near 80 degrees. the shower threat is basically
