aftghanistan afghanistan. there's chaos in kabul, as an explosion rocks one of the most heavily guarded areas of that capital city. richard engel has the latest on this. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. this is one of the worst bombings there's been in afghanistan recently. the death toll according to afghan officials stands at 80, 350 people injured. i must say the death toll has been going up all morning. the taliban denied responsibility and came out and said it wasn't responsible for this attack, making isis the most likely suspect. the bomb went off in kabul's diplomat diplomatic corner. first responders were quick to arrive. this is supposed to be the most secure part of kabul. the massive bomb in a vehicle detonated by the gate of the

ge german embassy. the american embassy is just a few blocks away, so is the entrance for a fortified military base. the blast went off around 8:30 a.m., as base employees were headed to work. the trump administration is struggling to come up with a new policy for afghanistan. the country is more unable than it's been in years and bombing alone isn't fixing it. after recently dropping the so-called mother of all bombs on what the u.s. military called an isis tunnel network, u.s. officials say the administration is considering sending up to 5,000 more american troops to the country. that could bring the number of american troops to well over 10,000, fighting a war once said to be all but one. this bomb exploded right in the center of kabul.

the turkish embassy says its buildings were damaged. the japanese embassy said some of its personnel were injured. >> a rush hour attack in the heart of kabul. richard, thank you very much. here at home, major developments to tell you about in an congressional investigation of russia's interference into the american election. and president trump is lighting up the internet with a bizarre tweet. peter alexander has all of the developments. >> reporter: covfefe, covfefe, the power to harness the power of social media, twitter, helped propel him. the megaphone is raising questions of who is monitoring the president's means of communication with the american people and the world. this morning, confusion over a tweet, after trump posted at 12:06 a.m. -- despite the

constant negative press, with the word covfefe. the seemingly unfinished tweet, remains up most of the night. followed by this tweet at 6:00 a.m. who can figure out the true meaning of covfefe. the associated press says that president trump has been handing out his cell phone to world leaders. urging the leaders to call him directly. it raises concerns about the u.s. commander in chief's communications. the a.p. also reporting that so far, only canada's prime minister, justin trudeau, has taken the president up on the offer. all comes amid the backdrop of the russia investigation, as fired national security adviser michael flynn is expected to provide the senate intelligence committee personal and business documents. and this morning, the inquiry is

expanding. congressional investigators requesting information from president trump's personal lawyer. cohen telling nbc news, i have nothing to hide. i'm more than happy and willing to testify. but they have to be specific. spstheyn's lawyer saying he is waiting for more information before responding. as jared kushner remains silent, white house officials are not denying reports he sought to set up secret back channel communications with top russian officials. >> you're asking if he approves of an action that's not a confirmed action. in general terms, back channels are an appropriate part of diplomacy. >> reporter: the bottom line here, is white house is trying to find the proper message on jared kushner and his contacts with russia. this is the first time sean spicer had briefed in more than two weeks. and they're going to come up

as you're about to see, the lithium batteries could pose anywhere own risk. this morning, passengers are still reeling after a jetblue plane from new york to san francisco was forced to land in grand rapids, michigan, after smoke started coming out of a carry-on bag, holding an electronic device. >> we look back. and everybody is standing up. and smoke coming arnold. >> reporter: none of the 158 people onboard were injured. jetblue releasing a statement saying, the flight landed safely. and the aircraft is being inspected by maintenance crews before commerce continue on to san francisco. while there's no reported ties to terrorism, the stint comes as the department of homeland security says an extended laptop ban is still on the table. >> contemplating extending the ban. >> reporter: dhs secretary john kelly said he would implement

counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted aggravated murder. police say he verbally attacked two young women on a train that he thought were muslim. and three men rushed to their defense. mi micah fletcher survived. a portion of orlando international airport locked down late last night during a tense standoff. police responded to a disturbance in the rental car area. a man in mental distress pointed a gun at them and then at himself. authorities got him to surren r surrender. the gun was a fake. some flights were delayed but the airport was back up and running last night. let's turn to mr. roker. relief in the weather? something happen there? >> no. ending may, much like we started. a little on the damp side.

7:40, now, on this wednesday morning. we're back with what we're learning about tiger woods and that dui arrest. >> the police report is now out, painting a clear picture of what officers found that night. nbc's kerry sanders has the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. when tiger woods was arrested, police had a dash-mounted camera recording. that recording will be released later today. and it may best explain the condition tiger woods was in as he sat behind the steering wheel of his car. this morning, it's clear from police reports when officers pulled up on tiger woods at 2:03 a.m. monday, he was out of it. the first officer on the scene found woods asleep behind the

wheel of his mercedes. the car still running. the golfing legend appearing to nod off twice while being interviewed. both rims on the driver's side of the vehicle, accordi ingaare according to police and the tires were flat. woods was cooperative, confused. his speech was slow and spectaculared, mumbled, confused. asked if he understood the direction to recite the alphabet, he said, yes, recite the national anthem backwards. he did eventually get the alphabet part right. he took a breath test. the result, 0.0. no alcohol in his system. that supports what he put in his written statement. what happened was an unexpected reaction to described medicat n medications. he dribled four medications he used, including vicoden,

explosion in the heart of the capital city. richard engel joins us with more on that. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. the death toll has been going up all morning. the latest figures we have, are 80 killed, 300 injured. that would make it one of the deadliest bombings in kabul after the afghan war. the explosion went off in the heart of the diplomatic quarter in afghanistan. where many foreign embassies are based, international aid agencies have their headquarters. the bomb exploded by the gate of the german embassy. the american embassy is not very far away, just a few blocks, in fact. but american personnel were not impacted. the embassy itself, not damaged. there's been no official claim of responsibility yet. seems that most of the people killed were afghan nationals making their way to work. it happened at 8:30 in the morning right at the peak of the

schedule, with concert stops here in the u.s. and canada. now, that tour is on hold, as she deals with her cancer relapse. olivia newton-john revealed to the world that the breast cancer she battled years ago, has returned. newton-john, who rose to fame in "grease," canceled the first leg of her concert tour. due to what she thought was a sciatica flare-up. it was revealed that the back pain she was suffering was breast cancer that metastasized to the sacrum. >> 20% to 30% of breast cancers will recur. the most common places for breast cancer to metastasize, are the bone, liver, lung, and brain. if it metastasizes to the spine, it can present with low back pain. >> reporter: the 68-year-old singer was first diagnosed with

and frying can be intimidating for people. >> yu don't mind leaving the skin on them. >> i like the skin on. you want to fry them at 350 degrees. then, you do a second fry. >> why do you do that? >> you let them cool between. >> you do. you want to raise the temperature to 375 degrees, fry them again. that gives you the nice, crispy brown. and give them a little salt. >> that's the entire chips portion of the recipe. >> exactly. while you fry the fish, put that in the oven for 250 degrees. and to make our batter, corn meal and flour here. you put in the paprika, garlic powder and baking powder makes it rise and salt and pepper. there we go. and then, you take your fish -- this is really easy. what kind of fish do you use? >> isn't this great? >> come to momma.
