kelly's exclusive interview with vladimir putin debuts tomorrow night right here on nbc. fbi director james comey set to testify publicly at a congressional hearing on thursday, but could the trump administration silence him? nbc's kelly o'donnell has more on that. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. in the face of criticism and controversy, the trump white house is trying to focus on its own agenda and anywhere where it has some power. and that could lead to a long shot and difficult challenge this week. even though the president has talked about his own conversations and tweeted about his conversations with james comey, will he attempt to use a presidential authority to keep comey quiet? president trump and james comey. the fbi director he fired could be headed for a new power struggle this week. comey is set to go public thursday about the russian investigation. but the white house is not

ruling out a move that could block comey from testifying on capitol hill by claiming an executive branch privilege that protects the privacy of a president's conversations with senior officials. in a new letter, democratic lawmakers warned the white house, any assertion of privilege by the president would be seen as an effort to obstruct the truth. that preemptive strike came after white house officials, including press secretary sean spicer, said legal options are on the table. >> i think obviously it's got to be reviewed. >> that's not a no. >> i've not spoken to counsel yet. i don't know how they're going to respond. >> reporter: getting answers prove difficult on another issue. >> thank you very much, everybody. this is slightly less controversial than yesterday. >> reporter: after president trump broke with nations around the world over climate change. temperatures rose in the briefing room. epa administrator scott pruitt and the press secretary deflected all questions, and the

piazza's blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit in february when he tumbled down a flight of stairs at the bet betbeta beta theta pi house. it would be 12 hours before anyone would call 911. >> nobody should consume that much alcohol. that's torture. >> reporter: 18 fraternity brothers face charges, ranging from hazing to involuntary manslaughter. they have not yet entered pleas. beta theta pi's office says they're cooperating fully. all while there was another scandal here at penn state, another case where university officials were accused of inaction. three former administrators, including a former president, were sentenced to several months in jail for not telling police early enough about coach jerry sandusky's sexual abuse of children.

for today, nbc, gabe gutierrez, pennsylvania. three officers were shot after a wild gun fight on the streets of laredo, texas. the fire fight started friday when officers spotted a murder suspect outside a convenience store. they had been searching for him in connection with the killing of his girlfriend. when police approached, that suspect opened fire. one officer is in critical condition, two other officers are in serious but stable condition. meanwhile, the 55-year-old suspect reportedly shot by police was pronounced dead at the hospital. ariana grande is back in manchester today. victims of the bombing after her concert were posing in pictures with her on friday. young dane farrell mann tweeted, i got to meet my queen tomorrow. grande will hold a benefit

concert that also includes justin bieber and katy perry. in one case an electrical fire broke out after a woman drove her car into water and it caught fire. a front loader dumped water on it twice. she was okay but the mercedes met its end. good thing he knew how to run a front loader. >> good skill to have. out of alberta, canada, of all places, we have a tornado video caught on camera. it is clearly moving over some dirty terrain there. you can see that dirt being pulled up into that funnel cloud and it was just swirling around. there was no reported injuries, which is fantastic news, because that is a huge storm.

krystal, fill us in. >> this is one of those weekend days that's a little bit of a tricked. you look out the window right now, you'll see this. a gray picture with rain coming down. not a heavy rain, it's a light rain, but that's across the board what we're dealing with. 60 right now inned philadelphia. we're at 52 only in the suburbs. 54 in the lehigh valley. delaware at 60 degrees. and actually seeing more dry conditions over delaware, starting to try to see maybe a peek of sun, but we're really not going to get that until the afternoon hours. in the afternoon hours, things will look a lot better that this picture here. this is our live radar view. we have these scattered showers passing throughout now almost our entire viewing area with the exception of delaware. as this continues to progress to the southeast, it will finally move out all the way. and once it moves out, it takes with it the clouds. this will allow us to have sunshine in the afternoon. coming up, we'll talk about more about these showers, time them out for you, we'll also look at your afternoon forecas
