morning.nal correspondent peter peter, a lot to catch savannah. insiders are casting tomorrow's comey testimony as the political e kquivalent as the super bowl. and today, officials will take their turn testifying before the senate intel committy, about the new lengths that the president went to shut down the investigation. and new reports that his attorney general offered to resign. 24 hours ahead of james comey's senate testimony, director of international intelligence, dan coats, takes his turn in the spotlight. "the washington post," saying that coats said in march, had intervened for him to get to back off of russia and former security adviser michael flynn. near the end of a briefing at the white house, "the post" reports the president asked everyone to leave the room except for coats and mike pam

peyo. overnight, a spokesperson for coats said he never felt pressured by the president or anyone else in the administration, to influence any intelligence matters or ongoing investigations. also this morning, "the new york times" reports, the day after president trump asked comey to end his investigation into flynn, comey told attorney general jeff sessions he did not want to be left alone again with the president. while comey believed the attorney general should protect the fbi from white house influence, quali"the times" rep that sessions couldn't guarantee. the president said this. >> i wish him luck. >> reporter: sources close to comey says, when he testifies thursday, he's likely to detail a pattern of what he believed were inappropriate conversations with the president about the russia investigation. but he's not expected to accuse president trump of on obstruction of justice. white house allies are looking to contain any damage.

one pro-trump group attacking comey's credibility. >> james comey, another d.c. insider in it for himself. >> reporter: tuesday, the president's son, eric, lashing out at those who oppose his father's administration. >> to me, they're not even people. it's so, so sad. morality has gone. morals out of the window. >> reporter: aeroturmond detail turmoil between the president and his attorney general. his frustration with sessions. not just in his eyes, unnecessarily recusing himself from the russia inquiry. but monday morning quarterbacking other decisions, including the travel ban. sean spicer refusing to say whether the president has lost confidence in sessions. >> i have not had a discussion with him about that. >> reporter: no update from the white house if they had that discussion yet. this morning, as we noted, there's multiple results that jeff sessions offered to resign after this relationship with the

president grew increasingly tense. "the new york times" reports that sessions told the president he needed freedom to do his job. the justice department is declining to comment. the white house is referring all questions related to the russia inquiry to the president's outside lawyer. matt and savannah? >> all right. peter alexander at the white house the thank you as always. let's bring in chuck todd, moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. we have another report of trump allegedly saying to an official in the government, in this case, the director of national intelligence, to lay off the russia investigation. something the director doesn't exactly acknowledged happened. he never felt pressured to do that. what does it add up to when you add in the pressure to the attorney general? >> the russia investigation has consumed the president on every level. the report about the director of national intelligence, dan coats, he wanted him to go to comey and lay off of mike flynn and the russia investigation. in talking to people very close

and supportive of dan coats, he's been concerned all along by the atmosphere of the relationship between his interactions with the white house. now, he testifies today. you know, there's two days of these hearings. comey's tomorrow. that's the big one. he testifies today. and that's going to be a big part of this conversation, as well. and he's going to add to this obvious nature where the president is just consumed. >> we don't know what james comey is going to say until the words come out of his mouth. but there's words that he will stop short of accusing the president of trying to obstruction justice. might we fall into a situation where we might have the legal definition of obstruction versus the emotional definition of obstruction? >> yes. that's why obstruction of justice charges are hard to make hold on this point. all of the circumstantial evidence here says the president is trying to do everything he could to stop this investigation, for one reason or the other. we don't have the motivation behind it just yet.

but for one -- and he's asked people to step in multiple times. yes, james comey will have to explain why, if he was so concerned to write a memo, he didn't take it to his superior, in this case, the attorney general or the deputy attorney general. i'm sorry. we're in a crisis here as a country with our institutions. if the reasoning is, what the fbi of director is supposedly say, he didn't know who to trust at the justice department, if we're in a situation where the director of the fbi can't trust his superiors, that superior offering his resignation to the president, where are we here? we're not in a very good place. and big picture-wise, folks on capitol hill, this is another gut-check moment for them. >> a role for congress to play. we have three branches of government. >> and the executive branch is not functioning right now. >> chuck, thank you very much. i'll be in washington tomorrow, along with lester holt, for james comey's testimony. the broadcast network will carry it live. we get things started. and live coverage on these nbc

i wasn't sure if he was alive, if he was dead. >> reporter: that's the assailant, surrounded by armed police. this morning, a show of force at the world-famous notre dame cathedral. the man was armed with just a hammer and knives. nbc confirming his first name, farid, a ph.d. student in journalism. who left a video in his apartment, pledging allegiance to isis. unlike the jihadists in london last weekends, this man was not on the radar. france under a state of emergency, after a string of attacks. some near terrorist spots like the louvre, on the champs-elysees. last july, a truck in nis, killing 86. and the 130 dead, more than 350 injured. during this latest attack, hundreds of people sought sanctuary in the cathedral, ordered to put their hands in

the air. outside, once again, fear in the heart of paris. and the attack on that security camera footage, happening in the square just over there. the man was in his 40s. no group so far this morning, guys, have claimed responsibility. matt and savannah, as you can see, the tourists here are already back. >> keir simmons in paris this morning. keir, thanks so much. new fallout about the explosive leak of a top-secret nsa document that detailed russian attempts to hack into u.s. election systems right before the election in november. a u.s. senator is warning this is just the tip of the iceberg. we're hearing from the parents of reality winner, the woman who has been charged with leaking that document. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the story. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. since february, reality winner had been a national security agency contractor at this military base. now, she's in jail. the first person arrested in an intelligence leak case under the trump administration.

to some, 25-year-old reality leigh winner is a traitor. to others, a patriot. this morning, the top-secret government document she's accused of leaking is setting off a firestorm. >> i have difficulty believing she actually did this. what they're saying she did. >> reporter: her mother and stepfather say she is not highly political. she called donald trump an orange fascist on twitter. >> expressing one's political beliefs doesn't mean that they're a bad person. >> reporter: prosecutors say winner admits leaking the explosive documents to the online news site, the intercept. >> any disclosure of classified or sensitive information can threaten our national security. >> reporter: the top-secret document revealing russian intelligence targeted local election officials in a company that provided software for the 2016 election. the top democrat on the senate intelligence committee tells "usa today" he does not think votes were affected.

but -- >> the extent of the attacks is broader than reported so far. >> reporter: reality's name was known worldwide. a week ago, she was a yoga instructor, studying to be a massage therapist. she worked for a nsa contractor at ft. gordon in georgia. federal agents arrested her at her home on saturday. >> her words to me were, she was scared she was going to be -- they were going to make her disappear. >> reporter: are you scared of where this goes? >> i am so scared. i fear that they're going to make an example out of her. i fear that there's anger from the top toward her. and i fear that something bad is going to happen. >> reporter: their daughter is due in court on thursday. she's not yet entered a plea. matt and savannah, edward snowden, is nsa whistle-blower, has come out in support of winner, writing she should be freed on bail. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. let's turn to dramatic new testimony at bill cosby's trial.

the woman at the center of the case, telling her story publicly for the first time. claiming the comedian drugged and sexually assaulted her at his home. stephanie gosk at the courthouse in norristown, pennsylvania. steph, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. andrea constand is on the stand today. her story will be picked apart by a defense team determined to undermine her credibility. constand says she saw cosby as a friend, as a mentor. and he nodded yes when she asked him if the pills were about to give her were herbal. andrea constand's testimony, the most pivotal moment of the trial. the memories are a decade old. the details constand shared in court, vivid. outside of the courthouse, we caught up with her attorney. >> i thought that she exhibited composure and bravery. it's hard to talk about intimate

details like that in a room full of people. >> reporter: she told the jury, after cosby gave her three blue pills, i began to slur my words. constand said he moved her to a couch. telling the court in a shaky voice, i was trying to get my hands to move and my legs to move, but i was frozen. unable to fight back, she says, cosby molested her. adding, i wanted h eed it to st. the defense team will focus a lot of attention on what happened next. constand maintained contact with cosby. at least 72 phone calls. >> how are you feeling today? >> reporter: accepting tickets for her family to attend one of his shows. constand told the jury, i did not have time to tell my family. i went along with it. after a year, she shared her story with her mother. the defense team wanted to know why she looked into civil attorneys before telling the police. i wasn't familiar with who i needed to call, constand said. i just reached out to them for

guidance and to get advice. dozens of women have accused cosby of inappropriate sexual contact. the comedian denies all of the allegations. after court, he left seemingly in good spirits. >> hey, hey, hey. >> reporter: slipping into an old role that almost everyone remembers. constand was unrattled by questions about inconsistencies in her statements to police or any suggestion that she was just out to sue cosby for omoney. but it's not over. on her way out, one of the defense attorneys for cosby says, we are just getting started. matt? >> stephanie, thank you. we have more news to tell you about this morning, including this one out of atlanta. police searching for a suspect after a bizarre incident there. it was caught by a dashboard camera. a woman was leaving a grocery store parking lot, where out of nowhere, a man rushes towards her car. he jumps on the hood and smashes the windshield with his foot.

the woman drove off and turned that video over to police. hoping that somebody will recognize the man and turn him in. let's two back to the dramatic video of the america's cup race we showed you at the top of the show. team new zealand's catamaran capsized moments after the race against britain. the vessel hurled three crewmen into the water. others were left clipging to it. all team members were okay. the kiwis hold a lead over their british rivals in the best-of-nine series. the team making sure that catamaran is repaired and ready to go before the next race. >> wow. who has to turn it back over? >> that's tough to do. >> everybody outal once. dylan in for al. what's shaking with the weather? >> rain down south. look at what we saw on camera yesterday, in forest county, mississippi. this camper swept up by

floodwaters. rushing down what was a street there, as it goes under the overpass. and the top of the camper gets stuck on that bridge there. heavy rain can lead to flash flooding like that. today, our best chance of seeing the flooding will be across northern florida and down near southern florida, where the rain has been coming down hard for several days. we have moisture coming in off of the gulf of mexico, that's going to produce more rounds of downpours. we've seen areas like miami, picking up more than half of what they see for the month of june. we're only in the beginning of june here. we're going to see more rain, up near

assaulted her in his elkins park home in 2004. cosby pleaded not guilty. tonight town leaders are expected to vote on a smoking ban for the north wildwood boardwalk. if it's passed, anyone caught lighting up on the boardwalk would face a $250 fine. we'll have another update in 25 minutes.

them. sometimes they say, i saw the ball well. >> yes. >> he was apparently seeing the ball very well last night. >> the ball couldn't get out of his way. a lot happening today. we want to tell you about the controversy case in massachusetts. a young woman on trial for involuntary manslaughter. she is accused of using text messages to push her boyfriend to take his own life. morgan radford is following the story for us. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. now, 20 years old, michelle carter is sitting trial for allegedly encouraging her own boyfriend to take his life. so, the question facing the judge today, can one person be held legally responsible for the suicide of another. an emotional first day in court. the heartbroken loved ones of conrad roy, wiping away tears a few feet away from michelle carter, accused of encouraging roy of killing himself. >> this case is a suicide case. it is not a homicide.

>> she pushed him to kill himself sooner rather than later. and she mocked him when he chose to delay his death. >> reporter: prosecutors say carter coerced roy to end his life by text messages. they displayed disturbing texts, that the 17-year-old sent roy before his death. tonight is the night, she wrote. it's now or never. roy texts, i'm overthinking. carter responded, i thought you wanted to do this. the time is right. you're ready. you just need to do it. roy drove to this parking lot and filled his pickup truck with carbon monoxide. when he left the car, carter texted a friend. i told him to get back in. i couldn't have him live that way. >> she assisted and devised and advised and planned his suicide. she reasoned him out of his reservations. >> reporter: if convicted, carter faces up to 20 years in prison. her fate, now in the hands of a single judge after waiving her

right to a jury. is manslaughter a reach? >> i think it's a stretch. prosecutors have to prove that she, michelle carter, recklessly caused the death of conrad roy. did she cause his death when he was alone in the car 30 miles away. >> reporter: carter's defense says she should go free, claiming she tried to help roy. but gave in by supporting his plan. >> the evidence will show it was mr. roy who had a plan to take his own life. >> reporter: the tragedy, affecting roy's mother, who took the stand tuesday, at one point, fighting back tears. >> he would say, hey, mom, can we talk? >> reporter: a devastating case where the judge must decide if words speak louder than actions. 40 states have laws criminalizing assisted or coerced suicide. but massachusetts isn't one of them. so, today, the defense is going to try to prove that roy acted alone. and they're expected to bring michelle carter's friends to the

headquarters in san francisco. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt and savannah. it may be the biggest story in silicon valley. two investigations into allegations of sexual harassment and the broader culture inside uber. at least 20 people have been fired. and this may be the tip of the iceberg. this morning, at least 20 uber employees, including senior staffers, fired, after 200 climbs of sexual harassment, bullying and inappropriate behavior inside the company. all this sparked by former engineer, susan fowler, who had unwanted sexual advances from on a a supervisor. it was not only swept under the rug, she was told her boss was a high-performer who management wouldn't feel comfortable punishing. they launched an internal investigation, saying anyone who behaves this way or thinks it's okay, will be fired.

sauce. so, once you get the patties going, you let them cook. i love the "today" show. everything is ready. i can just keep moving down. >> like an assembly line. after these have cooked, you save some of the juice they leave behind. >> exactly. that's where a lot of the flavor is. i take the patties out. and the sauce happens, with just onion, cook this around. i like to get the onions caramelized. we'll speed forward. one of the key ingredients is whiskey. you can use beef broth if you're not into booze. >> are you kidding me? >> i'm giving options. >> carson, have you ever substituted beef broth for whiskey? >> never in my life, mr. lawyer. >> it's too late in life to worry about doing that, carson. after this cooks down, i use barbecue sauce. it's a good convenience ingredie ingredient, and jarred jalapenos. >> this cooks for how long?
