conversation during comey's testimony today on capitol hill. president trump asked him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser michael flynn, and two, the white house's possible alleged ties to the russian government and any involvement russia may have had in the 2016 presidential election. during his testimony the former fbi director confirmed he took notes during his january meeting with president trump because he felt the president might lie about their conversations. comey also confirmed that he gave those notes to the special counsel, that is, in the russia investigation and in one of the most stunning admissions from asked a friend to share the existence of those notes to a reporter. comey says he hoped public knowledge of the notes would spark the creation of a special counsel to investigate the trump administration. here is some of james comey's testimony when questioned about >> do you believe donald trump

excluded with russia? >> that's a question i don't think i should answer in an open setting as i said we didn't -- when i left we did not have an investigation focused on president trump. the russians interfered in our election during 2016 cycle. they did it with purpose, they did it with sophistication, they did it with overwhelming technical efforts. it's not a close call. that happened. that's about as unfake as you can possibly get. >> so what does donald trump say about all this today? he was surprisingly quiet on twitter. he didn't send a tweet all day despite reports he might live tweet the event. and here is what happened when reporters asked him at the white house this afternoon about comey's hearing while he was attending a meeting about his infrastructure program. >> thank you all very much. thank you. thank you. >> the president simply replied "thank you." didn't field any questions from reporters. instead he let his lawyer do the talking for him. that lawyer along with other

republicans defending the fñ today's >> the president never in form or substance directed or suggested that mr. comey stop investigating anyone, including the president never suggested that mr. comey, quote, let flynn go, closed quote. >> the president is new at ;br@. he is new to government and so he probably wasn't steeped in the long running protocols that establish the relationships between doj, fbi and white houses. he is just new to this. >> reaction has been pouring in from all over today and i'm joined now by nbc 10 reporter lauren mayk, she's live in hearing room where james comey in one case called information from the administration lies and in another backed up the president on a key claim. lauren, you were there for all of this.

>> reporter: yeah, jim, that's right. backed him up in saying that, yes, he told the president that president trump was not being personally investigated. also backed him up saying that the president did not ask him to drop the entire russia investigation. but director comey, former director comey, did admit right here to date that he took a pretty unusual step to get his message out. >> why did you want a special counsel? >> reporter: the former fbi director leaving capitol hill to more questions now after telling he arranged to get information to the press to prompt a special counsel and that he hopes there are tapes of his conversations with the president. >> do you need to look into whether those tapes really exist? >> it's critical that we get to the bottom of this. >> reporter: just after the hearing i spoke with senator chris coons a democrat from delaware. >> we do need to get the records that comey made of those meetings and we do need to get

access to tapes if they exist from the white house. >> reporter: coons said he found comey measured and believable. >> there are things he said that now contradict what the president has said so what happens then? where does that leave you? who do you believe? >> that's the purpose of having an ongoing senate intelligence committee investigation and a separate investigation by bob muller who is the special counsel. >> reporter: a big issue today, comey's claim the president cleared the room and asked him to let it go when it came to investigating michael flynn.aan÷ republican senator marco rubio said it shouldn't have happened. >> i don't think anybody will leave this hearing and say what the president says was appropriate. whether it rises to criminality, i think there are significant doubts whether it rises to that level. my hope is that there are peoplñ in the white house that advise the president about what's appropriate and what isn't when you're interacting with the fbi. >> reporter: now, in the top of that piece you heard me ask the former fbi director why he wanted a special counsel. did he not stop to answer our bd

president trump to the news media. coming up at 6:15 what we've learned about comey's friend who helped him disburse that information. for now we will send it back to philadelphia, back to you in the studio. now we are turning our focus to a tragedy here at home. neighbors are calling it a heinous crime.hjl9pr(t&háhp &hc and police accuse the stepfather that infant. police responded to this house on conestoga street yesterday afternoon. they say the baby's stepfather led officers upstairs where they discovered the boy lying on the floor without a pulse. doctors at the hospital determined he was dead and noticed bruises and signs of sexual assault. neighbors are in disbelief. >> it is very sad and to see a child young an full of life one day and hearing that he's gone the next is very -- it's sad. >> the boy's stepfather is facing attempted murder charges. that charge could be upgraded to murder pending the autopsy results and the exact cause of

death. a man who served as a youth hockey coach in south jersey and delaware faces sex crime charges. investigators accuse walter farrington of sex abuse dating back to the '90s. police say a new victim came forward. farrington already faces charges of having sexual contact with a 12-year-old boy in gloucester county. the montgomery county man is also charged with abusing two jjy today jurors in the boss by sexual assault trial heard the actor's side of the story, not straight from the comedian, instead from people who were a part of the investigation after andrea constand reported the sexual assault to police. nbc 10's deanna durante just walked out of that courtroom and joins us live. how did that testimony portray bill cosby? >> reporter: they were his own words from police statements and a deposition that happened after andrea constand sued him

civilly. bill cosby has left the courthouse. after leaving the courtroom the are bill cosby's words, many of them simply too graphic for television. he describes two sessions, two evenings he says he had with andrea constand back in the winter of 2004. he says, quote, he was testing andrea in terms of touching. he told investigators and he told her lawyers during that civil suiti!x

welcome back here live in washington, d.c. tonight, a lot of people asking who is daniel richman. he is the man former fbi director james comey used to leak information to reporters, information he said was unclassified. comey described richman as a good friend. richman is a columbia university law professor who worked with comey back in 2013. the according to richman the pair have been friends for more than 30 years. richman a former federal prosecutor with the u.s. attorney's office in new york and he has been a vocal reporter of james comey in the past. that man right there now thrust in the white hot spotlight of the russia investigation. for now live in washington i'm jim rosenfield. a busy day there. cag[yñ celebration on shore, to people in atlantic city are enjoying long awaited improvements to the famous boardwalk, but despite the makeover a summer let down is still loomer.
