into severe weather. ear"early today" starts right n. good tuesday morning. i'm frances rivera. rumors swirling around the white house that president trump is considering firing special counsel robert mueller, just as the russia investigation turns to attorney general jeff sessions. the ag will be in the hot seat today testifying in front of the senate intelligence committee. nbc's peter alexander has more about the testimony as well as details on president trump's bizarre cabinet meeting. >> president trump face-to-face with jeff sessions. >> it's great to be here. >> reporter: the attorney general preparing to break his silence on russia testifying in public before congressional investigators days after james comey addressed his role in the controversy. >> we were aware of facts i can't discuss in an open setting that would make his continued engagement in a russia-related investigation problematic. >> reporter: will the white house invoke executive privilege. >> it depends on the scope of

>> michelle, how did my hair look out of the gym this morning? >> you have great hair. >> reporter: still the president's suggestion he has secret tapes of his conversations with comey who he accused of lying under oth. no time table for an answer. >> thanks to peter alexander for that. as he mentioned we're hours from attorney general sessions' testimony before the senate intelligence committee, where he will be publicly interrogated. nbc's edward lawrence sin d.c. this morning. so originally we thought this was a closed hearing. sessions requested it to be public testimony. what can we expect? >> reporter: expect very tough questions from democrats, the attorney general will be grilled about his failing to disclose meetings with the russian ambassador on his security clearance paperwork and be asked if fill in the blanks left by former director james comey's testimony when specifically talking about a meeting in the oval office where the president cleared the room and including

sessions to talk about the flynn investigation, comey testified at that meeting is where the president said i hope you can let this go, now we do expect the attorney general may invoke executive privilege on a few of the answers. the white house basically is not as worried about this testimony because they know exactly what the attorney general is expected to say, still, there may be some very surprising questions for us. and answers as well. >> we'll know at 2:30 eastern when that testimony is expected to begin. thank you. so, will president trump fire special counsel robert mueller? rumors are flying around spurred by an interview with trump friend christopher ruddy. >> i think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. i think he's weighing that option. >> ruddy's is questionable. while he visited the white house monday a source says he did not meet with the president. adam schiff the ranking democrat on the house intelligence

committee tweeted if president fired bob mueller congress would establish independent counsel. don't waste our time. it is worth noting that legally the president cannot fire a special counsel. but he could order the attorney general and justice department officials to fire mueller. the jury in bill cosby's sexual assault trial will continue deliberations, deciding whether cosby is guilty of drugging and molesting andrea constand. jurors deliberated four hours on monday. and for the first time since the trial began cosby's wife camille escorted him to court. the defense made their case in a few minutes calling only one witness. during closing arguments the defense pointed to inconsistencies in constand's story. they also suggested the trial was happening only because of the dozens of women who accused cosby of sexual misconduct. cosby has denied all allegations against him. one accuser spoke out during a break in proceedings. >> justice for andrea is justice

for not only all of us 60 women, for all of the other women that have not found their voice. >> prosecutors pointed at the comedian's word saying he admitted in a deposition to giving constand pills and engaging in sexual activity. breaking overnight a man hunt in arkansas for gunman who shot and killed a police officer. state police say 41-year-old newport lieutenant patrick weatherford was shot at a park. he was rushed to a hospital where he later died. the shooting happened monday evening around 7:30. officers and canine units were sent to the area to search for the suspect. few other details were released. weatherford was a 15-year veteran named 2016 jackson county officer of the year. this morning dennis rodman is on his way to north korea. rodman passed through beijing airport where he was expected to board a plane. he made several is the trips to
