good evening, i'm jacqueline london. tonight congressional leader steve scalise is in critical condition with a bullet wound. three others were also shot and wounded. the gunman is dead shot by police. another congressman and police officer got hurt during that shooting. the bullets were flying this morning just outside of washington, d.c. at the eugene stadium park in virginia. congressmen and aids were practicing for tomorrow's annual congressional baseball game when the attack began. the shooter 66-year-old james kin son of bellville, illinois. he moved to virginia several months ago and lived in his car. he was known to frequent a ymca right next to the baseball field. he used to volunteer for the bernie sanders campaign. he says he's sick bed by this despicable act. live team coverage. lauren mayk spoke with the eyewitness who recorded video of the attack.

we begin with tim furlong live at the scene. >> reporter: we just had a short while ago with a briefing that the guy was illinois was living in alexandria. they need to know what made him snap today in this park. >> e he shot this video from behind a trash can. >> sheltering in the child care center. >> reporter: republicans were at the baseball practice say the gunman was out looking for them. jeff duncan says hodgkinson e made sure he was at the right field. >> he asked me if this team was republican or democrat team practicing. i responded that it was the republican team practicing. and proceeded to shoot

republicans. >> reporter: ultimately capitol hill police officers part of steve scalise's security detail took hodgkinson down. colleagues and aids were yelling at him to get down and stay down as he crawled for the outfield. >> he was coherent. he was asking for water and obviously he laid out there on his own for ten minutes. >> reporter: once they were sure the shooting was over, everyone on the field got up to help those who couldn't help themselves. >> one of our staffers was bleeding from his leg. so he said he was okay and i said you've been shot. you're not okay. >> reporter: that staffer will be okay. you can see as you come back live, police still on the scene here. a democrat and republican just put out a joint statement saying the ball game is still going to be played. they want lots of democrats and republicans to come out to national park for this game.

they also say they want the president there. they say it would be a good way to show some unity in the wake of this tragedy. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> our live coverage continues with lauren mayk on capitol hill. you were one of the first reporters on that scene and spoke with a man who saw it all happen. >> reporter: that's right, and then we headed here to capitol hill where lawmakers came back to work today. there are two republican lawmakers from our area on that republican team and neither one of them was there today, but one of them tells me that he just missed his 6:00 a.m. ride with another kmab or congressman or have been. congressman costello says he practices with the team three days a week when congress is in session always at that field. and he says e he plays

shortstop. the congressman shot plays second base, right next door to him. so given what we know about where the gunman was and where he was shooting, it is hard for him not to think about what could have happened. >> that's a scary thing when you realize because i'm a member of congress i could have been on a baseball field where somebody would have just did what they did. >> not an easy day hear. >> not an easy day for me. it's not. it's not at all. >> reporter: it is emotional. members here are shaken up and congressman costello telling me that he understands when somebody disagrees with him on a a vote, but that is policy and he hopes that people will remember that they are all human beings. live in washington, d.c. on capitol hill, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> "nbc nightly news" lester

holt is on the scene in virginia and will continue our coverage tonight at 6:30 on "nbc nightly news." we're on day e three of verdict watch. nbc 10 has cameras inside and outside the courthouse ready to bring you word of a verdict as soon as it breaks. i'm jim rosenfield. good evening, live outside the courthouse where jurors asked the judge two more today. we're going to get to what they asked. they wanted to rehear andrea constand's testimony, in particular the portion when she described the counter with bill cosby and what she told police about the incident. they also wanted to rehear testimony from the first detective to interview cosby. deanna durante is joining us live with more on these questions tonight. >> detective richard schaffer was on the stand for quite awhile during this trial as both a prosecution and defense witness. what the jury wants to hear is

his interview that he did with bill cosby in a new york city law firm after andrea constand had reported to police he sexually assaulted her. that's where cosby told investigators they have had numerous romantic encounters and he gave her three blue bills to take. e he told them they were benadryl and after that interview, he supplied investigators with some cut up benadryl tablets and other medications. one for blood pressure and one herbal. the jury has not reheard that tl. they will after they eat dinner. they also wanted to hear andrea constand's own words, what she said on the witness stand. how she said she went to cosby home and they were talking about her career and life and he gave her three blue bills. both have told the jury in their own words in one way or another that the activity did. happen in the home. there was sexual activity. cosby says it was consensual. andrea constand says it was sexual assault. that's what the jury is still

struggling with tonight as they eat their dinner and continue to deliberate the fate of the 79-year-old comedian. reporting live, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> they'll go back into course to hear more. but i'm joibed by an expert. they are asking for large portions of testimony to be read back to them. does that tell you nig? does it speak to how well they listened during the actual testimony or common for jurors to want to hear it again? >> i think it's important to notice what they are not asking for. they are not asking for any testimony from the expert testimony or any of the other people. this case from the beginning was labeled as a he said, she said kind of case. at this point in deliberations, all the questions seem to be focused on what did andrea constand said and cosby say. it seems as though the jury has disregarded all the other information that came out and concentrating on those two

things. >> we don't know how many are still in e need of being convinced way or the other when they hear this testimony read back to them. >> i believe that. i also think the longer this goes on, it's probably more of a win for the defense. the longer that the jury is out, there must be reasonable doubt somewhere here because theyen haven't come back with a decision at this point. the long er it holds out, the better it is for the defense. >> we should point out they haven't said to the judge we are dead locked or having trouble reaching a degs. so the process b continues. we'll hear more as we continue to mob tor the jurors' progress here. for now, back to jacqueline london in the nbc 10 studios. >> update us on any further activity whether it's another jury question or a verdict. to this now, deadly workplace violence in san francisco today. four people were killed in a shooting a ups warehouse.

an employee opened fire before shooting himself to death. you can see as other employees filed out of building to safety. a new jersey doctor now at the center several criminal investigations says he's staying in jail. a judge ordered the doctor to remain behind bars until a dehearing on monday. kaufman is accused of waving a gun when investigators served a search warrant yesterday. the warrant is not related to the 2012 unsolved murder of his wife. the doctor maintains his nebs innocence. >> he's destroyed. he's very upset and thinks he's being unfairly accused of things. unfairly investigated. and everybody has a breaking point. >> prosecutors call kaufman a danger to himself and others. another day in court for philadelphia district attorney seth williams, but this time he's at the defense table. his corruption trial is set to

begin in a few days. today williams' lawyer and prosecutors worked out the final logistics for trial. it's expected to last about one month. nbc 10 in north philadelphia a pregnant woman was shot in the dorway of her bedroom today. that woman told police she heard a noise down stairs in her home around 2:30 this morning. when she walked out of her room to see what was going ob, she stau two men who had kicked in her front dor and shot the woman in the leg before taking off. she's expected to be okay. celebrating flag day, how philadelphia's newest museum is marking the patriotic holiday. last night's london tower fire bringing back memories of a similar blaze here in philadelphia. next, the lessons learned from the e meridian fire and advice for those living high in the sky. some picture perfect weather is making its way for tomorrow

a a london high-rise apartment building. 12 people are known dead. investigators expect to find more victims in the burned out building. the smoke and flames were just too intense for firefighters to reach anyone in the top ten floors of this building. there was no sprinkler system inside and only one stairwell was accessible to residents. and that inferno in london similar to a deadly high-rise fire in philadelphia 26 years ago. the meridian fire led to drastic changes in how high-rise fires are attacked and prevented. randy gyllenhaal spoke with firefighters who were there and has life saving advice for anyone who lives in a a tall building. >> reporter: terrifying visuals, the high-rise consumed by fire and smoke. those images a vivid reminder to firefighters here in philadelphia. >> they are just a tough fire to

fight. >> now the city's deputy fire commissioner who back in 1991 battled the infamous meridian fire, a high-rise office complex near city hall that went up in flames killing three firefighters. >> a fire that's burning thor floors is labor intensive. >> reporter: the e meridian fire was a a lesson that sprinklers should be in every high-rise building. >> all new construction whether it's office residential has to be sprinklers on all floors. >> reporter: residential high-rises are popping up left and right. all of them will have modern state of the art sprinkler and alarm systems, but it's up to the residents to study their specific buildings evacuation plan. >> early warning is krcritical any fire. it's extremely critical in high-rise fires. >> pat invested the fire he says the best advice is if a fire breaks out, get into the protected stairwell where rescuers can find you. >> when the alarm system

out and enjoy the weather. it was a popular spot to enjoy a run or walk. for many this was welcome after our three-day 90 degree weather. >> and yesterday with the 96 degrees set iting a record. so temperatures in the low to mid-80s is comfortable by comparison. still relatively humid. it's closer to 80 across most of the area, but look at the sunshine in the lehigh valley. that's pushed the temperature further up there. what about the jersey shore? nowhere near the mid-80s here. 70 degrees in ocean city with the northeast wind often at 63. 73 at cape may point. even inland not all that warm. temperatures in the 70s. and it's going to be even cooler over the next couple of days. 85 for the official high of philadelphia today. 81 tomorrow. 79 on friday. and then it starts going up. and it's not just the temperature that goes up.

the humidity too. big time. below normal temperatures through friday as you saw. the wet period starts on friday. we don't have to worry about tracking any kind of showers or storms tonight or tomorrow. and over the weekend we will be tracking showers and storms. steamy and stormy for the weekend. especially on sunday. tomorrow, no storms or humidity to speak of either. fairmont at 81. reading at 82 degrees. just beautiful. nice and comfortable. at the shore it's going to be chilly. 68 degrees with the wind off the ocean at longport. and inland temperatures only into the middle 70s. now as we go through the night tonight and into tomorrow, we're seeing dry weather. thursday night we could start to see the first showers. and then by friday, we're

starting to see quite an increase in showers and maybe even thunderstorms. this model is really nailing this by friday afternoon and evening. we'll check out future computer models in the days to come. but for father's day e we do have a threat of showers. it will be very humid. it also will be hot. best chance of thunderstorms later in the day. so much of the day may up being dry. but still get a storm before the day is over. so there it is. 90 degrees in philadelphia. but upper 80s elsewhere. 78 at the jersey shore for father's day. and as we go into next week, it's going to be even wetter on monday. i think monday may be the wettest day of all. so a little bit of a break saturday and sunday compared to friday and monday. and then the temperatures don't
