temperatures hitting 120 degrees. plus, a terrifies one way crash captured on a dash cam. that and more on a special edition of "early today." good morning. house member oh steve scalise is in critical condition after a gunman opened fire on a republican baseball team. he was hit in the right hip and the bullet fractured bones, injured internal organs and caused severe bleeding. scalise has already received multiple points of blood and doctors say he will need further surgery. several others were injured during the shooting. matt micah was injured. zach b.a.r.t. was injured but posted he was okay and in the hospital. his boss, roger williams from texas suffered a sprained

incident during the -- sprained ankle during the incident. capitol officers were injured. president trump visited the wounded officer in the hospital as well as representative scalise and his wife. the president later tweeted scalise is in very tough shape but is a real fighter. pray for steve. nbc has more on the shooting. >> reporter: captured on cell phone video, the moment rapid fire broke out in alexandria. >> shots being fired and possible victims involved. >> reporter: an all-out gun battle as capitol police and alexandria officers engaged a lone gunman.

66-year-old james hodgkinson targeting a baseball game. >> we're at the baseball field right by the ymca and at the baseball field. steve scalise the first to be hit. >> he dragged himself from the baseballfield to the dugout. we can't help him. we have baseball bats versus rifles. >> the police immediately returned fire. >> reporter: the gunman armed with an automatic assault weapon and handgun. >> he had an ak-47 in his hands exchanging fire with police officers crouched behind a black suv. the six congressman injured,

david bailey. crystal griner, mike bailey, matt micah and representative williams twisted an ankle. >> one starve dug into the dugout with a wound and we got somebody's belt to stop the bleeding. we were tending to him as well as trying to keep down away from the shooter. >> reporter: members of congress said the gunman knew who was on the field. >> the individual walked up, asked, are those republicans or democrats. jeff said they're republicans and the guy turned around and started walking towards the field. it was a little odd. i didn't see any indication of violence. >> big fat guy, probably 5'8", 5'10", t-shirt, shorts, a long gun and pistol. >> reporter: after an intense gun fight that shot out the window esof the ymca, hodgkinson was shot and wounded.

all five were rushed to the hospital. representative scalise taken off the field by medics, a police officer taken out by a chopper. >> i never thought i would come to a baseball practice for charity and have to dodge bullets. >> reporter: representatives who normally don't have security details were grateful for the capitol police detail for scalise who had a detail. >> we were all sitting ducks except those sit ing the dugout. >> the political accusations started hours after the shooting newt gingrich talking about the hostility on the left and the gunman's actions. here's what we actually know about the shooter. >> reporter: police descended on the suburban home of james hodgkinson. having identified him quickly from the id he was carrying.

age 66, a home inspector in bell vel, illinois -- belleville, illinois who allowed it to lapse last fall. he strongly disliked republican policies and bitterly opposed president trump. on facebook he wrote, trump has destroyed our democracy and time to destroy trump and company. he used obscenities, and wrote i hate republicans and everything they stand for. a family member says hodgkinson was distraught over last year's election and worked as a volunteer for the bernie sanders campaign. >> i am sickened by this despicable act. let me be as clear as i can be. violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society. >> reporter: hodgkinson was a prolific letter writer to his local paper. in 2011 he described republicans as quotes full of hate.

during 2011 "occupy wall street" demonstrations he talked to the fox affiliate. >> 99% are getting pushed around. the 1% are not giving a damn. >> reporter: the congressman from hodgkinson's district said he called about 10 times but never threatened. >> they were disagreeing with my position but there were not any threats or any red flags that were sent up. >> reporter: in late march, sheriff's deputies responded to calls from residents that said he was shooting in the woods near his belleville house. >> we went over and talked to him. he was very nice, i'll take it to a range somewhere that's saver and that was the end of it. >> reporter: officials said he'd actually been in suburban d.c. for the past six weeks and frequented a virginia ymca directly across the street from the ballpark. >> nbc pete williams there. new developments in the russian investigation.

the "washington post" reports special counsel robert mueller is now examining whether president trump attempted obstruction of justice. and including an interview of national intelligence dan coats and mike rogers as well as former nsa director the "wall street journal" explains may have documented a significant phone call between rogers and trump. what more do we know about the russian investigation? >> we're just learning about what may be going inside this fbi investigation. keep in mind dan coats and mike rogers both testified here recently and would not talk about their private conversations with president trump. what did the president ask? what was their response? what could be key here the deputy of the nsa, richard leggett, according to that report, may have documented some of that conversation and be willing to talk about it with

the fbi now. keep in mind when the former fbi director testified here, james comey, he said he had assured the president several times that he was not personally under investigation. then comey was fired and according to these reports, the look into whether or not president trump was trying to obstruct justice started after comey was fired and after he told nbc he was thinking about russia when comey was fired. the question here, did the president ask any of these national security officials to intervene in the investigation. that's what they're going after. mr. trump's attorney, his personal attorney called this fbi leak as he describes it outrageous, inexcusable and illegal. frances. >> thank you. there's heat and a whole other level of it. are we really going to get within 2 degrees of the hottest temperature ever recorded?

something like out of a horror movie. >> that's how one survivor described the deadly inferno blaze in london that killed 12 people. many residents remain unaccounted for. blaze ripped through the 24 floor building early wednesday as people swept. many questions arise as residents complained about the building's fire safety. building management, have they responded? >> reporter: a lot of tough questions about whether this tragedy was preventable. there are reports there were alarm systems failing to go off, residents being told to stay put. residents association said it complained and warned about the risk of fire for years but that the warnings were ignored by city council which owns the building and a company that's been managing the building. this building nund went a -- un a renovation last year.

there were concerns that the outside was the reason why the building went up so quickly. the fire commissioner said the scale of this isn't something that he's seen in his entire 30 years on the job. 12 people believed to be killed. dozens are missing. 78 being treated at six hospitals. the fear is that the death toll is likely to rise. you can see the building still smoking behind me. it's too dangerous for authorities to do a comprehensive search. this is a country that suffered three terror attacks in one year and now this tragedy. more horrifying with those witness accounts. thank you. the manhunt for two escaped georgia inmates is intensifying with a reward raised to $90,000. authorities have found a green honda allegedly stolen by ricky dubose and donnie russell rowe. they believe the pair stole the car after killing two guards on a prison bus. the search is on for another
