bill henley is here with the forecast. >> it's a first alert weather day for severe storms this afternoon. all of the neighborhoods from the lehigh valley then through philadelphia into delaware and south jersey. it starts at noon. it's going to go on through the afternoon and well into the each hours. that's when we could be severe thunderstorms take shape with damaging winds and large hail is possible. heavy rain could produce flash oo so far, we have seen a few sprinkles. nothing severe about that. you could see scattered showers in the pocono mountains where first thing this morning we did have thunderstorms. the main threat is from a line of showers that is moving through western pennsylvania. it's approaching state college and williamsport. it's moving to the east at 30 miles an hour which will put it in williamsport just after noon. it's most likely to impact us this afternoon and moving through the philadelphia area during the afternoon and each commute. before it gets here, we're steaming up and heating up.

84 right now in philadelphia. winds out of the south at 17. in the 80s in the suburbs and new jersey. you can see clouds building over the lehigh valley. 85 right now. the chance of storms popping up at 2:00. that's when we could see the first of the strong storms and that threat continues into -- well into the afternoon hours. through it all, it's going to be getting hotter. upper 80s this afternoon with a high humidity it will feel like in the middle 90s for philadelphia today. into the 80s for most areas at the shore. likely to stay dry during the day. evening storms are likely for the jersey shore and delaware beaches. i will break it down with the futurecast when i come back in a few minutes to show you when the storms are most likely to appear in your neighborhood today. >> we will see you then. have the free nbc 10 app with you. it will send you weather updates as the severe storms move into our area later today. now to breaking news out of paris.

police are swarming the champs elysees. police are warning people to avoid the area. this is where a terrorist shot and kill aed a police officer i april. we get more information, we will pass it along to you on air and on our app. in london police call a van driven into worshipers near a mosque a clear attack on muslims. a man who was being given first aid at the scene died. it's not clear if he died as a result of the attack. ten people were hurt. a 48-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder. we will have more in the next 15 minutes. jury selection in the seth williams corruption trial is under way. philadelphia's d.a. is accused of taking bribes in exchange for illegal favors. >> pamela osborne is live for us

in center city. >> reporter: it all depends. experts we spoke to say at best it could take a day. but that jury selection process could stretch into tomorrow as well. that was seth williams on his way into court this morning. he was greeting cameras awaiting his arrival. his attorney adding they were feeling good going into the federal corruption trial. seth williams is facing 29 counts relighting to bribery and corruption. prosecutors say he took trips and gifts in exchange for favors. let's talk about the jury. more than 100 potential jurors are part of the panel. they will be asked what they may know or have heard about the case prior to today. they come from all over north hampton, bucks and beshrks coun to name a few. another thing is their ability to serve. this trial is expected to go on four four weeks.

one of the things they will attempt to weed out are jurors that can't commit to being a part of this four-week long process. they say that it could cause any hardship. that's another thing that they're going to check for as they go through the potential jurors. i will be back in a half hour for another update. then we will talk a little bit more about the actual charges against d.a. seth williams. live outside the federal courthouse, pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. happening now, a doctor whose wife was murdered five years ago is in court on unrelated charges. prosecutors are trying to show why dr. james kaufman should stay in custody. prosecutors showed body camera video of the doctor waving a gun when investigators served a search warrant on his medical office. the warrant is not related to the unsolved murder of his wife in 2012. the judge in the bill cosby trial could re-visit his decision not to release the

names of the jury members. media outlets have challenged this. the judge gave prosecutors until today to decide if they want to oppose the release. there are concerns interviews could impact a retrial. it's not clear why jurors could not reach a verdict or how close they came. the district attorney is promising to try the case again. page 6 of the new york post is reported cosby knew all along that he would get a hung jury. the paper says cosby reminded those around him during court breaks that he only needed one juror to be on his side. he called the conference room where he went for his breaks his dressing room and the courtroom his stage. cosby also allegedly claimed he turned down an offer by the district attorney for a no jail deal that would require him to register as a sex offender and wear a monitoring bracelet. the prosecution denies any offer was made. philadelphia police are looking for whoever shot and killed a man on house arrest.

the victim was in a chair in front of a house in west philadelphia when someone shot him numerous times. police believe he was the intended target. they say he was wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet. an assault in philadelphia leaves a man fighting for his life. he suffered a head wound around 2:00 this morning on north 18th street. he is listed in critical condition. investigators say witnessed who know the victim said they saw and heard nothing. pennsylvania state police are trying to figure out how the young son of a firefighter got ahold of a gun. the 4-year-old child died after shooting himself in the face yesterday at a home in monroe county. his mother was a freemansburg fire company. the philadelphia teachers union will vote on a contract days after reaching a tentative deal with the school district. if union members approve the contract it would run through 2020. we are expected to learn details

following the vote. the superintendent told us the new agreement could mean more stability for the district, teachers and the students. we have a warning this morning for six south jersey communities after a sewage spill. a malfunction caused the spill yesterday. us power outage caused generators to stop working which sent sewage pouring into the big timber creek. health department officials are warning people not to swim, drink or fish in the creek or its tributaries until tomorrow. that includes gloucester, camden city. if you are a 76ers fan, trust the process again. >> hopefully it will bear fruit. they will pick first on thursday so they can take washington point guard foltz. you are looking at him working on with the sixers saturday.

london's police commander says a van crashed outside a mosque was clearly an attack on muss lips. >> authorities have not released the name of the driver who took into custody. bill kneelly reports from london. >> reporter: minutes after another deadly terror attack and the injure ready treated where they fell, rammed by a van at high speed. >> drove on the pavement, coming straight towards all the muslims. as he is coming, he hit all of them. >> women and men on the floor. people bleeding. there was screaming. total anarchy. >> reporter: the attacker appears to have targeted people leaving prayers at a mosque. he crashed his van then tried to escape but was caught by the

crowd. >> we get him out of the car. he started fighting with him and spitting on us. he bite. >> reporter: some say he was shouting threats. >> he said i to kill the muslims. >> reporter: those he tried to kill handed him over to police. >> he was led away to the van. he screamed out, will do it again. he stuck out his hand as a gesture. >> reporter: i will do it again. one man died at the scene. police aren't sure if this was as a result of the attack. they are examining the van. no matter the motivation proves to be, we are keeping an open mind. this is being treated as a terrorist attack. >> it's a reminder that terrorism, extremist and hate take many forms and our determination to tackle them must be the same whoever is responsible. >> reporter: muslims who prayed for the victims had just prayed in the mosque for the dead of

last week's london fire, tragedy following tragedy, this one deliberate terrorism. people here this morning are shocked. they're angry and they're scared because the momentum of these attacks is now growing. there is a danger of at this time for tat attack. london today on edge. in london, officials say 79 people are dead or missing following that high-rise fire last week. that's a new number that came out this morning. it could go higher or lower. he says it's possible that some survivors may not know they are considered missing or have for whatever reason not let their family know they're safe. authorities are looking into whether renovations had made the building less safe. on wall street, the dow moved into record high territory this morning. 21492. that broke the previous record last week. a live look at the board.

the dow is up 105 points. the west souwest are in for record breaking heat. northern california yesterday, on top of the heat, there were numerous power outages across the bay area because the use of so many air conditioners overtaxed the grid. in phoenix, temperatures are expected to soar past 120 degrees today and tomorrow. the record high temperature at phoenix's airport is 122. that's one of the reasons i left and am in philadelphia. bill henley? >> announcer: your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> that's a good reason to leave. it's a hot one here, too. for different reasons. we don't have the extreme heat. but we have the high humidity that we have had for days. people are trying to escape the humidity at the shore. not happening. it's a steamy day at the shore. there's another risk at the

shore, that's the rip current risk which has been high. it's still high and expected to stay high this each. be careful right along the coastline. the rip currents will be strong. inland areas, a different threat. severe thunderstorms. we see the first showers starting to pop up. the threat of the strong storms will continue into this evening. it will clear out overnight tonight. then we will get a break from the humidity and see cooler temperatures tomorrow. it's warm. 84 degrees. but it feels like it's in the 90s in delaware and south jersey. 84 right now in south jersey climbing. didn't get that cool overnight. we saw morning temperatures in the 70s, upper 70s. it's ten degrees warmer than when we went on the air at 4:30 this morning. it will feel like it's in the 90s this afternoon. we are starting to see activity on the radar. not in the immediate area but you can see showers to the north. now we have our first severe thunderstorm warning that has

gone up to the west. it's not in our area yet. but that's very heavy downpours with a thunderstorm that's moving to the east at 40 miles an hour. severe thunderstorm warning for this area which is to the west of our area until 12:15. those winds are going to be strong. they have been clocked at 60 miles an hour based on radar. puts it in williams town at 11:38 and porter 11:44. it has some ways to go. it's heading to the northeast. it will miss our area. this is the main event. look at that line of storms. hef very downpours. no severe weather just yet. but that's a as we go into the afternoon as the heat and humidity will combine to fuel those storms as a cold front races into the area. here is your hour by hour. this is just after noon, the storms to the west. by 1:00, get closer to berks county and lehigh valley. during the afternoon, from 1:00 to 3:00, that's when we will see the heavy downpours and potentially severe weather move

into the lehigh valley. then the suburbs and then philadelphia. most of it is destined for the suburbs, philadelphia into delaware and new jersey right around the time of the evening commute. this is 4:30 this afternoon. this latest computer model shows heavy downpours in south jersey, accelerating and moving through south jersey and then to the shore during the evening hours. this is 7:00 this evening. first the rip current risk at the shore and then strong storms later today. the risk will be greatest for damaging wind and lightning. we could see some large hail as well. with heavy downpours, flash flooding is a possibility with the storms moving through. through it all, it's a steamy one. upper 80s in philadelphia at 1:00. the storm threat coming in this afternoon and into this evening. see what it does to the temperatures. suburbs will see storms before philadelphia. 81 at 5:00. storms possible at 9:00 this evening. the lehigh valley, showers and

thunderstorms coming through during the afternoon. should be starting to move out during the late day -- late evening hours. for delaware, you won't miss out either. 85 at 1:00, and evening hours, you will see showers and thunderstorms in delaware and new jersey. at the shore, a little bit later. count on those during the evening hours as well. storms today, you may have noticed with the seven day forecast, things are looking better tomorrow and wednesday. the humidity comes down. look at that with the full ten day on ten when i'm back in the next half hour. >> see you then. there are questions this morning surrounding the deadly collision of a u.s. navy destroyer and a cargo ship. authorities are trying to figure out what the worship's crew was doing before the crash as the bodies of killed were recovered. the bully at the playground. mom it could be you or someone you know. ahead, a look at just how many moern mothers have been criticized by their parenting schools.

easton seeing clouds. you can see rain coming down there. it's showing up on the radar on the satellite, the first of the showers. these are mainly light showers in lehigh county and north hampton. there are heavier downpours. we're tracking the one severe thunderstorm that's starting to die down a little bit. it's moving to the northeast at 40 miles an hour. follow this line, that's the main threat. follow that to the south and you can see moving toward s hagerstown, maryland, those will move into our area. keep an ear toward the weather. download the app. that will alert you to changing situations. what's not going to change is the humidity level today. right now, 84 degrees in philadelphia. it feels steamier. that heat will fuel the thunderstorms this afternoon. first alert for our area for severe storms. it will sweep from the north and west, right on through philadelphia, delaware and south

if you add them all, there are 29 counts against the current district attorney. >> good morning. how are you? >> reporter: that was senl with williams on his way into court. you heard him greeting on his way in. his attorney adding they were feeling good going into the federal corruption trial. according to the indictment, williams received a 6300 trip, other gifts in exchange, prosecutors say he offered to help the person who gifted him that bypass airport security at philly international and also help that person's friend who was facing jail time. williams is also accused of using $20,000 that was meant to care for family member for his own personal expenses instead. williams refused to step down as district attorney. his law license has been

suspended. right now, the jury that will ultimately decide his fate is inside right now. both sides going through questions for those potential jurors. williams has maintained his innocence throughout the entire time. if convicted, he could face up to 20 years behind bars. my colleague is inside of the courtroom. look out for her reports throughout the day. live outside of the federal courthouse, i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. the u.s. navy has identified the seven sailors who died when a container ship hit the u.s. warship off the coast of japan. >> we are hearing from the mother of one of the fallen sailors. >> reporter: the "uss fitzgerald" is badly damaged. its crew and the community here mourning the seven sailors who didn't make it. >> their loved ones are what make the navy great. this loss is something we all feel.

>> reporter: today, we know their names, their faces. among them a 19-year-old from virginia. and this young man from california. his father, a retired navy man. his mother didn't worry about her son. >> he knows whatever situation i know he can get out of it. but this time he wasn't given a chance. >> reporter: how an advanced warship with sophisticated equipment and a watch crew could collide with a cargo ship more than three times its size is the focus of several investigations. there are conflicting reports about the time of the crash. marine traffic records show the cargo ship made a series of course changes and a u-turn before heading toward tokyo. the commander suffered a head injury. now he is facing questions about

how a collision could happen in calm weather. repairs could take up to a year. the star board side is crushed and gashed. the entire crew scrambled to keep the ship from sinking but couldn't save the seven lives that were lost. it's unclear how long the investigations will take. japan's investigators have been on board the cargo ship that was involved. u.s. navy officials here say they will cooperate fully. for now, their focus is on the families of those sailors. back to you. new information on braining news out of paris. police now say the suspect who drove into a police car is dead. officials say they found weapons and explosives inside his car. police are warning people to avoid the area. they're calling this an act of terror. this is the same area where a tear terrorist shot and kill aid police offica police officer in april. as we get more information, we will pass it along to you on air

and on the nbc 10 app. firefighters in portugal are getting ready to battle a forest fire that killed more than 60 people over the weekend. france has offered three planes to help with the effort. authorities said spain has sent two aircraft. the prime minister said the death toll could rise as firefighters inspect charred remains of buildings in remote villages. more testimony is expected this week in the russia investigation. congressional intelligence committees meet wednesday. the president's lawyer spent sunday morning on the news shows insisting mr. trump is not a target of the investigation. this despite president trump's tweets calling it a witch hunt. the president's son-in-law is heading to the middle east this week for peace talks. jared kushner will arrive on wednesday for meetings to talk about a deal between israel and the palestinians. trump made a personal appeal for peace during a visit to. >> jeremy: last month. a special election in

georgia could end up as a referendum. the race is the most expensive house race in history. more than $40 million has been spent so far. the position opened when president trump appointed congressman tom price to his cabinet. the president this morning tweeted his support for handbell. polls have the two candidates in a neck and neck race. in the face of a public backlash megyn kelly aired a controversial interview with alex jones. he is known for outrageous allegations. he claims sandy hook was a hoax. >> i tend to believe that children probably did die there. then you look at all the other evidence. i can see how other people believe nobody died there. >> as she noted, there is no evidence on other side.

forever friend. every saturday at 9:00 a.m. here on nbc, we clear the shelters. you may see a dog or cat that would make the perfect pet for you. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. we are seeing clouds pop up here at the studios. still seeing blue sky. but this afternoon, the storms will be sweeping through the area. the clouds are racing past. that's warm, very muggy air that's being forced into the area. it is fuel for the storms to come. 84 now in philadelphia. the suburbs and lehigh valley has warmed up five degrees from this morning when it was 80 for most of the morning. an unusually warm start. 80s in south jersey and delaware. temperatures will climb higher but fall short of the 90 degree mark for most neighborhoods. graduate hospital is at 91.

myowers, you can see showers that so far have been avoiding most of us. we're seeing that rain and those storms pop up in the pocono mountains. we have seen some downpours now just past easton and heading to the north. there's one area of severe thunderstorm activity that's seeing heavy rainfall. the rain coming down at a rate of more than five inches an hour in a very small area. that's on the move. i don't think any one area will get five or six inches of rainfall. we will see some heavy downpours this afternoon. right there, that's the main act that's going to be coming in for the afternoon hours. this is a cold front sweeping into the area. that passes tonight on the other side of the storm, that's the cooler, drier air that you are going to feel tomorrow. not today. that cold air pushing into the warm moisture, that's producing showers and thunderstorms. give us severe storms right on through this afternoon. we could get a lot of rainfall

in a short period of time. this is 4:00 this afternoon. this computer model is showing rainfall amounts of more than an inch in reading and allentown. watch how quickly it will change. that's 4:00 this afternoon. philadelphia is reporting, not much more at 5:00. watch what happens between 5:00 this afternoon and 6:15. up to more than an inch and a half of rain. that's the potential for rainfall. i don't think everybody will see that much. with that kind of rainfall p potential that could lead to flooding. the severe weather for this afternoon, it's an enhanced risk for our area from lancaster through allentown and towards the shore. the stores are going to produce heavy rainfall. that will give us flash flood risk. damaging winds, risk is high for this afternoon. you will likely see lightning as well. possibly large hail with these storms popping up this afternoon.

a smaller risk but not completely out of the question for a tornado. that's today. come tomorrow, it's all out of here. the cold front passes by. less humid conditions. temperatures come down. still warm but much more bearable than the last few days. the humidity drops even more on wednesday. morning temperatures in the 60s and highs in the 80s. another warming trend. upper 80s thursday. dry with partly sunny skies. the heat and humidity will build for friday and saturday. near 90 both days. a chance of showers on friday. showers and thunderstorms as another cold front saturday. that will once again bring us relief for sunday. the temperatures come down. the humidity will be dropping. low 80s monday, tuesday and wednesday. that's where we should be this time of year. today, it's going to feel like it's steamy. watch out for the storms this afternoon. we will have updates right on through the day here at nbc 10. ♪

through easton this morning. the heaviest downpours are yet to come. you can see showers have started to pop up in chester county and delaware, too. that watch, that batch right in the center of the screen, that's a severe thunderstorm warning. we can expect more of those popping up this afternoon. you can see it's a line of showers that extends way into west virginia. it's approaching hagerstown, maryland. those will be here this afternoon. it's active with those thunderstorms in -- moving into maryland. we have a first alert weather for all of the neighborhoods from noon to 11:00 tonight. there's a threat you will run into showers and thunderstorms even well into the evening hours. severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain could lead to flash floods today. the steamy conditions finally will break for tomorrow. until those storms come through, do your best to stay cool. >> thank you very much, bill.
