10 studios. you heard the thunder. you can see the coming down there in buckets too. take a look at first alert radar. you can see the pop up showers making their way all across the region. nbc 10 news at 5:00 begins with first letter weather coverage. let's begin with meteorologist glenn schwartz. behind us, center si is drenched. >> absolutely. wait little bit and the sun is going to come out. we're going to end up today with some really nice weather. this is one cluster e of storms and once that moves through, you have dry air right behind it. this is just a temporary situation. it happens to be during the afternoon rush. let's take a look at this. you can see much of philadelphia is actually out of the heavy rain by now except for south philly and northeast philly. let's see just we're seeing some of the heaviest rain. we're center city.

you're getting hammered right there. upper darby, the heavier rain has just gotten past here. and the rainfall rate is not a a lot of lightning with it, but it's coming down really hard and gusty winds with this. it's caused some wind damage. look at the peak rainfall intensity. 5 inches per hour. if it stayed in one spot an hour, you'd get 5 inches of rain. fortunately, it's moving. it's moving towards the southeast. let's go in a little closer in through upper glen yn holden. we're getting some of the heavy rain. and we're starting to see some of the heavier rain in parts of new jersey, bristol is getting

alert weather updates. abortion, sex and birth control, sex education is at the core of a heated debate over proposed planned parenthood at a school. new at 5:00, randy gyllenhaal is live in brooks county where a rally is underright now. i can see the people behind you. >> the reading school district is going to be hearing about this proposal to open a sexual health center inside the halls of reading high school. that's going to happen in about an hour. this would be an opportunity for students to walk into an open door, ask questions about contraceptives, but we're seeing a number of pro life demonstrators urging this school board to vote no. >> teens get pregnant at three times more than the state average. it's part of the reason officials here are considering opening a sexual health center at reading high. >> there isn't enough of a safety net for our young people.

>> it's called access manners. it's answering teen questions about sexual health, birth control and lgbt issues. >> decreases in teen pregnancy really correlate to access to comprehensive education and access to birth control. >> it will be up to the school district whether the health center offers condoms or makes referrals on abortion. >> she opposes any talk of contraceptives inside of a school. >> teaching of sex education should be done by the parents and clergy. in a private setting, we don't want the teaching in the scho s schools. the schools should be reserved for academics. these are topics that are hard to talk to with your father and mother. i would hope my son would come to e me and ask any any questions, but if for any reason he couldn't, this gives that young person an option.

>> both sides of the issue there the schoolboard will begin the hearing in an hour. we are expecting a vote some time next week. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> the death of a woman found beating in a pool has been ruled a homicide. the medical examiner says the cause of the death was blunt force trauma. the 47-year-old was found saturday in her home on forest court. prosecutors office now investigating how she died. tonight police are searching for the gunman b who shot and killed a man outside a popular restaurant in burlington county. officers were called to iron hill around 8:30 this morning after gunshots rang out. police found a man shot to death. he's identified as devin young. this all happened while people were driving for work at nearby businesses. some were shaken.

philadelphia district attorney was back in federal court as testimony continues in his bribery fraud trooifl trooil. a woman handed him a bible. he asked her tr her prayers. inside the courtroom, prosecutors questioned witnesses about money they say was supposed to go to a nursing home for care for williams'. they claim he spent the money ob himself instead. an auditor testified that a check given to williams for his mother's care was spent to pay for his water bill. a stabbing is being investigated by the fbi as a possible terror attack. a police officer in flint was

stabbed in the neck. witnesses say he was standing a at the top of an escalator when a man with a large knife attacked him. the officer is in stable condition. uber's ceo is resigning. his exit comes after pressure from investors asking him to step down. recently uber has been under scrutiny with allegations of sexual harassment. he will remain on the board. he helped to build the ridesharing company in 2009. let's talk about the weather we're having. a bit soggy in the last half hour. the weather was gorgeous. if you look at boat house row, showers just passed through this area. they are moving rapidly. >> let's check in with chief meteorologist glenn schwartz. e he has your first alert forecast. we just got pounded and then it cleared out. >> that's right. once that storm goes past, the sun comes right back out and you end up with a beautiful end to

the day. just a brief interruption. fortunately, this is moving very quickly. so the heavy rain does not last that long. the problem is what causes it to move quickly is causing some wind damage. and so storm now is pretty much past tld. now into new jersey and camden, burlington counties. we have had several reports of damage. these are the symbols for that. large branches down at 4:26. pottstown, trees and power lines down at 4:00. numerous large trees down at 4:35. green lane, trees and wires down at 4:12. now we have some more reports coming in from new jersey. the severe thunderstorm warning extended until 5:45. not quite down to the shore, but i'm sure that it will be as long

as this maintains itself. it does look like it will because it's very well organized roigt now. it is just on top or about to be on top of pemberton. it will be getting the heavier rain in just a couple minutes. lacey at 5:43. if we extend this to the shore, atlantic city at 6:15. it's interesting that these storms were moving west to east and start making a right turn. that's what took it down to philadelphia and will take it to atlantic city. this is a different kind of storm. this is a tropical storm in the gulf of mexico coming to make landfall. tremendous amounts of rain over the south. and then some of that moisture moving this way.

here's the computer models showing the track of what will be the remnants of it. we're not going to get hit by a tropical storm itself by the 40 mile an hour winds, but it's going to carry the moisture with it. by friday with the center of the remnant low, we can still be getting rain a at that time. because the winds in the upper atmosphere are incredibly strong. it's going to push it right on top of us. it's a matter of the timing. that's another thing that's going to move through very quickly. and that's good because the faster it moves through, the less likely we're going to have for flooding. temperature down to 73 with the thunderstorm reported. down to 67 in the suburbs. now it's looking nice and sunny.

and in delaware where it hasn't been hit yet, 86 degrees. pretty wild afternoon. is and we're going to be seeing those storms head down toward the shore. and as we go through the night tonight, it will be a pretty nice night. then on thursday, a pretty nice day. although it's going to get hot near 90 degrees in philadelphia. sea breeze down the shore. then on friday, here comes some of the moisture from the remnants of cindy. some of it on the heavy side. perhaps friday morning. another there that you saw toward midday. then we get a break. then another round coming in late friday night and into saturday morning. and once that moves through, we should end up with some decent weather for the rest of the weekend. so friday is likely to be stormy. not it all day, but it will be hot and humid.

look out. bus on the loose. this rubaway bus caused a brief scare in brooklyn. the whole thing caught on ra. the driver got off the bus, but forgot to put it in park so the bus start ed rolling backwards and slammed into ten parked cars. also a church. luckily the church wasn't damaged. can't say the same for the cars. the bottom line, no one hurt. more than 500 surfers gathered in california for a record breaking circle. check it out. the surfers formed the largest paddle out. it showed support for the inclusion of surfing in the 2020 olympics. there's been many paddle outs in this area, but this is the first one recorded by give nis. they are now in a league of their own. the four letter carriers from

until 6:00 for parts of the area. meteorologist krystal klei joins us live from the museum of art. it's cleared up there for now. >> reporter: yeah, i am right along the parkway right now. the road is wet here. we hear kind of the splashing from the cars driving along. i'll tell you what. not too long ago when that severe thunderstorm rolled through, let's take the video that we were able to capture as we were ducking into our car. it was an absolute downpour for only about ten minutes at best. and that heavy rain just kind of washed out the roadways and sent people running for cover. just as quickly it started pouring on us and started to lightly drizzle and come to a close. so let's take the live back outside now here right noext to the art museum. and look up at the sky. it's blue again. you can see the sunlight and it feels really nice. i can tell you i have the

which got pounded by the storm. this is just light to moderate rain that's coming in. that's nothing like what they had. lock at all these storm reports that keep come iing in. this one shows a tree down. that's the symbol for tree damage. so at 5:05, several large tree limbs down. potstown had tree and power lines down. damage to some homes. numerous trees down. green lane, trees and wires down. this is at 5:45 in burlington and ocean counties. and until 6:00 up through the toms river area. but it's not heading further

down towards cape may. so it's going to hit cedars and ship bottom after 6:00. but then it's going to go out to sea. now the next thing we're going to be watching is this. it's tropical storm cindy. going to make landfall as the tropical storm most likely. but there's a lot of moisture with it and the remnants of that are going to be moving in this direction. these are the different computer models. and they are in great agreement here. that means it's going to be moving fast. by friday even with the remnants right here of the center of low pressure, the moisture could be already over our area. and then the track takes it pretty close to us, which would suggest at least a period of some heavy rain friday night and into saturday morning. we're down to 70 degrees now in philadelphia with the rain starting to come back in parts of the area. the sun is breaking out.
