"nbc 10 news" starts now. >> right now at 11:00, severe storms rock our region. heavy winds and rain lasted just minutes in i'm sorry neighborhoods, but left plenty of damage. >> nbc 10 is all over our area tracking the aftermath. passengers trapped on a train for hours in brin mar after the storm knocked the power out. trees crashed on a car in fairmont park. and a roof blown off in northeast philly. good evening. >> we're bringing you live team coverage of the aftermath of tonight's severe storms. chief meteorologist glen "hurricane" schwartz is in the weather center. >> keith, a lot of damage out there tonight. >> reporter: this is one example how strong this tomorrow was. i'm 6'3". the bottom of this tree towers over me. and look where it wind.

the wind knocked it past the fence here, hanging over the inner lanes of the roosevelt boulevard. >> it almost sounded like the house exploded. >> reporter: he was inside of this home. >> i jumped out of bed to make sure my wife was okay. she was downstairs. she came up and said the whole roof is off the house. >> reporter: not to mention the street was on fire. the wind ripped wires down, the sparks so hot it tore a hole through the pavement. >> fire was shooting up 20, 30 feet in the hair. it was a horrible experience. >> reporter: for rents of water and whipping winds dropped branches and trees on cars. cody was driving this one. >> after it hit, we kind of were like shocked for a second. i looked over and checked her. she was okay. >> reporter: his mom thankful her son was alive. similar scenes played out all over the city.

nearby, cars drove around a downed trunk. this car was crushed in winchester park. >> like a tornado was coming through or something. >> reporter: the storm tore a tree down on this shed. the power was out up and down the street. >> unbelievable. yeah, this is probably happened when sandy, the same thing. >> reporter: back live now. keep in mind, when this storm passed through this area of the city, it was rush hour. had this tree actually eclipsed this chain link fence and went down into the boulevard, it could have been disastrous. right now, there are less than a thousand with a power outage. keith jones, "nbc 10 news." and the storm made for major delays. downed trees caused power and signal outages. >> there wasn't much

communication. so i was expected to land in melbourne at 6:25 and t got off of the brinmar station at 8:30, just because i refused to stay on any longer. >> trains along the line were still running behind schedule. in burlington county, a downed tree forced the closure of a road. no injuries were reported. >> in montgomery county, a pair of trees fell knocking down power lines there. and take a look at this. that's a car under the trunk of that tree right there. the massive tree crashed down on wind rim avenue in logan. a witness who saw it fall says it is amazing no one was hurt. >> some lady just missed getting hit by that tree. she was just walking by when that thing started to fall. i don't know how she didn't get hit. i really don't. >> and part of the tree hit the garage across the street.

let's bring in glen. >> you're tracking even more damage out there tonight. >> we had a number of reports of damage across the area. it started around 4:00 this afternoon. first, there was just some showers coming across central pennsylvania. then it started to explode right after it hit redding, and then it continued moving southeast, all the way to the shore. right at 4:00 is the first report of severe weather. trees and power lines down, gusts estimated to 70 miles per hour. and then all of these reports, mostly north of philadelphia, down to just across the river. now, the next thing that we're watching is the tropical storm. about to make landfall along the gulf coast. a lot of moisture, some of it potentially affecting a part of our weekend. and you at home can stay

who went swimming with three other boys at the last day of school. >> the current was so heavy, it took him. >> reporter: they went in right after a heavy rainstorm. when the 17-year-old got into trouble, he tried to pull him to safety. >> i reached out to grab him, but we were like this, and since the current is so strong, it took him away from my hand. >> reporter: he says the boy gasped for air and vanished. they ran to a ranger for help, then the search began. they used boats, divers, people on the ground and in the air. >> i just heard the helicopters. >> reporter: neighbors gathered hoping for news. >> it's tragic. it sucks, it hurts. prayers to the family. >> reporter: a panicked mother of one of the boys was still shaken up. >> i just hope they can find him. >> reporter: a tragic way to begin the summer recess for these high school students. >> no words. >> reporter: the school superintendent was also out

here. he says even though school is out for summer, they'll have grief counselors available if anybody needs them. at day drek, tbreakdaybreak, th resumes. take a look at these flames here. sky force 10 overhead as cars burned at this recycling center in burlington county. crews were called out here in springfield township just before 7:00. the thick, black smoke could be seen for miles. one firefighter was injured but expected to be okay. a 66-year-old philadelphia man is in critical condition tonight after he was found shot in the head in his home. police were called to the home on spencer street this evening after the neighbor found the victim. a friend identified the victim as a local jazz musician well liked by everyone in the neighborhood. >> this is a nice neighborhood. i've been living here all my life. it's just sad. rick's been a friend all my

life. >> the victim was taken to einstein medical center. there is no motive for the shooting. a show of strength in washington for a capital police officer. crystal greiner threw out the first pitch tonight. she was just released from the hospital this evening. she and several others were injured last wednesday when a gunman opened fire at a practice for the republican team in the congressional baseball game. congressman steve scalise was the most seriously wounded in that attack. he's still in the hospital after several surgeries, but there is good news. his condition has been upgraded to serious. during a campaign style rally tonight in iowa, president trump once again sent his thoughts and prayers to scalise and he touted last night's win by republican karen handel in georgia's special congressional election. then mr. trump shared more about his plan to build a wall along the u.s.-mexico border. >> we're talking about the southern border.

lots of sun, lots of heat. we're thinking about building the wall as a solar wall, so it creates energy. and pays for itself. >> the theme of the event was build as promises made, promises kept. tonight police in south jersey are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a man outside a popular restaurant. officers were called to maple shade around 8:30. police found a man shot to death behind the restaurant. he's been identified as 26-year-old devin young. tonight, we're learning how the jury in the bill cosby sexual assault trial may have voted. abc news spoke to one of the jurors who said 10 of the 12 agreed the comedian was guilty on two counts, while only one voted for guilty on the third. the case ended in a mistrial last saturday. the judge who presided over the trial ordered the names of the jurors be released late today. but the judge said they cannot

new tonight, a gets loose and attacking a teenager in a delaware neighborhood. >> we talked to a young woman who stepped in to help. >> i saw the dog biting him like right here, and like it ripped his whole shirt. so i started pulling him away from the dog. >> wrbrandon hudson plains wher the canine was in the neighborhood in the first place. >> reporter: a neighbor shared this video showing a large police presence here moments after a delaware state police canine officer bit a 15-year-old boy. kalen waters, the teen's friend, showed us where it happened. >> next thing you know, i heard him screen. so i ran over there and i saw the dog bitding him right here,

and it ripped his whole shirt. so i started pulling him away from the dog. >> this was the shirt my client was wearing that was ripped off by the dog. >> reporter: the 15-year-old's attorney shared photos of his client's injuries. these wounds will heal. the emotional pain may linger. >> he's not really interested in going outside right now. so it's something he'll have to deal with. this was absolutely a terrifying experience. >> reporter: state police say their dog was chasing an armed suspect. neighbors say the dog was coming down this alleyway, came around the corner and saw that 15-year-old boy. however, that suspect got away. these are photos of the suspect police are looking for. during the search, the canine got away from its handler. moments later, it had the teen by his shirt. waters said her friend thought the canine, a german shepherd, belonged to a neighbor, because it wasn't wearing a police vest. >> the dog jumped on him once and then started trying to bite

at him. >> reporter: the teen's attorney will request a police report as the next step. >> if a police officer let a dog go to chase a suspect, i certainly want to know what that suspect did. >> reporter: i'm brandon hudson, "nbc 10 news." abortion, birth control and sex education were at the center of a heated debate outside a local school board meeting tonight. >> thank you so much for coming out. >> protesters demanded the redding school board vote no on a proposed planned parenthood affiliated health center for students inside redding high. opponents are against any talk of contraceptives or abortion in a school setting. but supporters say the school could reduce teenage pregnancy. >> teaching them sex education should be done by the parents and clergy, in a private setting. >> some kids might feel safe talking to parents, but not everyone does. so this is a safe place for kids to be able to go. >> in redding, teenagers get

pregnant at a rate more than three times the state average. the school board could vote on the issue by next week. the gulf coast is bracing for impact as tropical storm cindy bears down on the region. the storm has already claimed the life of an alabama boy. states of emergency is already in place in alabama and the remnants of that tropical storm could impact your weekend. >> for that, let's bring in glenn. >> it's not the winds of this tropical storm, it is the rain, and the rain is going to go from the gulf of mexico all the way to the east coast by the weekend. we started the day off nice and clear. 11:15 this morning, nothing on the radar. a few showers in central pennsylvania, developed into thunderstorms and raced all the way through the area, leaving dozens of reports of wind damage, especially from upper montgomery county through

philadelphia, a lot of reports in northeast philly and burlington and gloucester counties. a tremendous amount of moisture here. you can see the swirl just south of the coast, and the rain goes all the way into atlanta. the jet stream is going to push some of that moisture in our direction. and the track, the remnants, pretty much agreeing on this, all very tightly concentrated in here. and even as we go into friday, they're tightly concentrated together. and with the winds blowing this way, even on friday, that moisture could be causing rain in our area. then the tracks come right over us, or close to us on saturday morning, leaving a pretty good chance of rain then. no rain during the rain tomorrow. pretty nice looking day, but kind of hot. 90 in fair mount.

the humidity not all that high. allentown and easton at 87 degrees. 81 in long port. delaware, dover at 88 degrees. as we go into thursday, thursday is dry, near 90. here comes some showers. look at what happens by friday morning, the first batch of moisture comes in, and that could be heavy. friday night, some more. saturday morning, another batch. look at that. that's some heavy stuff, but it's not going to last. it's going to keep moving, and so just a portion of saturday, the early part of saturday looks rainy and stormy. and then clearing during the afternoon. sunday looks like a really nice day with low humidity. philadelphia is getting a
