>> we're tracking the storms moving in our direction. it looks like for the most part, we have some severe thunderstorm warnings and watches issue d jut to the west of our viewing area. we have some storms that are close to us. we're tracking for you a severe thunderstorm warning just west of burkes county until 5:30 p.m. we have some severe thunderstorm watches. i want to show you something that you rarely see around here. the team always keeps you updated. this is what we consider when we talk about hail. we're seeing just how much energy and the potential we have for hail. i do think we'll get some hail associated with these storms moving through the area. right now, we're also looking at storm intensity. this is another product that we use here exclusively. first alert team uses this product telling you just how strong these storms will be for the next couple hours. they could be dangerous at times. especially because we're talking about these storms moving over the plateau and as the elevation drops, sometimes they pick up

opponents and supporters meet face to face. a packed house there at city hall. jim rosenfield live in the breaking news center with this story. things did not go as planned. >> they didn't. local lawmakers had nixed the hearing buzz of that chaos and confusion. >> people came out to show their support for the tax carrying signs and chanting saying they are worried that funding for pre-k could be taken away if the tax is eliminated. we spoke with councilmen say they are not sure why they happened and the crowd today may have been confused. >> i think the committee was coming to say get rid of the beverage tax and these programs. >> other councilmen say they are not surprised by the

demonstration saying people will naturally fight back if they feel like they are going to lose important programs. the tax has brought in $25 million so far for the city. live in our breaking news center, jim rosenfield, nbc 10 news. > 800 households near the high-rise fire have been evacuated because firefighters say they can't guarantee the safety of residents. this comes on the same day e we learned that a freezer sparked the foir that killed nearly 80 people. police also say insulation and tiles in 24-story building had failed fire safety tests. they are considering manslaughter charges. today a a setback for the health care bill. a republican senator from nevada says he can't support the bill that currently stands. that brings the total number of republicans against it to five.

road block. he proposed to use $300 million of sur lus as part of the budget address, but the speaker seemed to close the dor on that idea saying it's a bad bill. the first week of the seth williams corruption trial ends with the philadelphia district attorney praising his lawyer's effort. much of the testimony came from muhammad ali. he told the court he gave williams lavish gifts in part because he wanted help from the da because he was having trouble with the tsa at the airport. the defense says the two men were friends ask that williams never actually resolved any of the problems. . they also questioned ali's motive for testifying. he's facing tax fraud and bribery charges. new at 5:00, degree revoked. the board of curators voted to revoke the honorary degree it granted to bill cosby. the recommendation was made back in 2015 following allegations

that cosby sexually assaulted several women. last week a judge declared a mistrial on charges bill cosby sexually assaulted a former temple university employee. in other news, a deadly accident is under investigation in east germantown neighborhood. a woman died when her suv slammed into a tree. investigators are trying to determine what led to the crash. we have new video of several men wanted tr burglarizing a family's home and their business. you can see the man this an apartment above the family's deli in southwest philly. it happened last saturday. police say they also hit the deli downstairs and earlier in the day investigators say the same group of men ransacked the deli owner's home. five years after being battered by hurricane sandy, a home is no more. a crew brought down the so-called hepburn house

yesterday. the home stood here for some 90 years before it was severely damage d by hurricane sandy. it became an occasional retreat in the 1980s for katherine hepburn. a pop already bridge is back open. it reopened this afternoon. the bridge connects avalon and the city. it had been shut down for two and a a half months for repairs. what happens to animals after they have been through testing for research? a lot of times they are euthanized. in 2015 82 cats and 85 dogs were used in research in delaware. now a state senator wants to make sure that they find forever homes for these animals. they were trying to get a a law passed to require universities to work with area shelters and rescue groups. turning to this now, an aed killer caught on the boardwalk. the popular place he was arrest

praise and criticism as people react to the health care bill. the countdown is on as they decide whether to vote on it or not. chuck todd joins us from washington, d.c. we're almost at the same point in the senate that we were in the house a few weeks ago. a few conservative republicans seem to stand in the way of the bill passing. do you think the republicans here will be a able to push this thing through? >> look, because of the way mitch mcconnell, the senate republican leader, has scheduled this vote, it seems to be design ed to do a shock and awe version of legislating, which is to take a week from bill introduction, amendment to a passage. he believe this is. the longer this is debated, the

more the opposition will grow. while, yes, there are some conservatives who are making noises, there are moderates making noises, he's going to try to thread this needle to a point and use a political argument rather thn a policy argument to win these folks over. saying do you want to make the base mad when we do nothing? you may not like this bill, you may this bill is going to be a political problem tr you down the road and you may be right, but you'll have a bigger problem with the base if it you do nothing or if you are blamed for skcuttling the ability to repea and replace or partially repeal and replace bobamacare. while the substance i think is very troublesome politically for the republicans say when this gets implemented in the next two to three years assuming it passes, i can see mitch mcconnell making the case that says, hey, worry about that when it comes. this is about survival right now. if you want to do tax reform,

we have team coverage as we track these storms. let's begin with e meteorologist erika martin. >> we are tracking some really strong storms moving to our direction. we already have a severe storm watch that has been issued. we have clouds building in the vertical. look how thick and soupy the at mot fear is. the clouds are thick across our area. satellite and radar, this is our two-hour loop. we are seeing some rain and isolated thunderstorms. we have a severe storm watch that has been issued by the national weather service. it's until 10:00 p.m. locally, i am tracking some stronger storms moving into burkes county right now. notice the red. we have some stronger storms moving from west to across burkes county including chester county and lehigh valuelevalley. and i want to show you something interesting. this is how we track hail and

see just how big the hail may be as it falls from the sky. so roigt now the satellite and radar lop is e showing the hail larger for burkes county moving across the area from west to east. we're also looking at the intensity of the storms really important especially because we had a lot of daytime heating a as temperatures climb into the 80s. we also had really high dew points for today. i do think we're pretty much going to see a couple thunderstorms across our area. so severe thunderstorm risk looks like it's enhanced for parts of the area. a slight risk ask that does mean we have the potential for some stronger storms possibly some hail as well. so here is your severe thunderstorm risking up in just a bit. we'll talk more about this, but what we're looking at is the potential for hail, stronger storms and just really tracking that for you. hour by hour forecast starting this at 5:00 p.m., notice we have this southerly flow moving across the area here. we have pretty much a a moisture chug because of cindy.

and this will clear by tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. then it looks like we have a pretty nice second half of your saturday into sunday. glenn schwartz has more information on that. >> there's going to be a a brief interruption and another nice weekend. by 7:00 a.m. the rain is already over. the sun is already starting to come out. but we're getting the thunderstorms in delaware and at the jersey shore. as we go through the morning, the rain is gone. the sun is coming out. it's going to be a nice day. not as humid as today. look at that sunshine throughout the afternoon. at the beaches, delaware beaches, that early shower ob saturday on saturday.

>> we are seeing a severe thunderstorm warning that has just been issued for burkes county and lehigh county. a heads up to west and knot of the city. a a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for 6:1 this evening. we are expecting several thunderstorms and heavy downpours moving from west to east across the area. remnants of cindy as the moisture moves up from the southwest to the northeast. here's satellite and radar image. you can see how strong the pockets of downpours and thunderstorms could be. we're seeing lightning strikes. i want to show you our satellite and radar storm intensity tracker. this is telling us just how strong these storms could be right now. we always have to get official confirmation. but you're seeing some oranges and reds here. that's telling me we're seeing stronger storms, heavier pockets of downpours moving across the

reporting live, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. sentencing has been set for the bucks county man convicted of sexually assaulting six girls in the same family. lowe will be sentenced september 20th on 17 counts of rape of a child. he was convicted earlier this month. investigators say the girl's parents gifted their oldest daughter because he helped them financially. caplin got r one of the gurls pregnant. she was just 1 at the time. >> a man accused of killing his father was arrested on the atlantic city boardwalk today. the 37-year-old beat his father to death on father's day. he's charged with murder, robbery ask other offenses. he had been spotted twice less than an hour after the murder. vineland police say the o owner of an ice cream parlor was recording employees while in the changing room. investigators say larry bostic

put a camera inside the employee changing room. that camera led to a monitor and recording inside his office. all of the victims are teen girls. he's facing several charges. >> here's a look at the stories making headlines across the region. people could be forced out of their homes. some people might have to be relocated during that clean up. in chester county calls to end gun violence. a group ral lid. they want. ed to support a bill that would prevent people who have committed a hate crime from purchasing a gun. in a statement a spokesperson said in part he will continue to look at proposals to reduce gun violence and believe we must work to prevent senseless acts of gun violence.

some muggy, sticky afternoon on this friday. erika har tin joins us now. >> that rain could ruin outdoor plans for tonight and tomorrow morning. >> we're tracking this rain. but the good news is a lot of it will clear by early tomorrow morning. approximately 10:00 a.m., i'll time that out for you. it's the center of that low hovering over the tennessee valley and all that moisture heading our direction. i'm tracking more rain and thunderstorms moving across the valley. we have a severe thunderstorm warning that has been issued by the national weather service. so the severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 6:15 m. seeing several strikes across burkes county and lehigh valley. and a watch here in the pink issued until 10:00 p.m. so not in the clear until 10:00 p.m. tonight. i do think those storms will linger longer until

approximately 11:00 p.m. locally let's focus in on what we're e seeing right now for chester county and montgomery county. we're seeing storms in the area move quickly. they are moving at 50 miles per hour. so packing quite a punch. es herbally as it works eastward. so get inside if you don't want to be out there. here's your risk as issued pi the storm prediction center. even though we are in the slight risk zone for our area, it still means we have the threat of some strong storms. short lived not widespread. one or two possible tornadoes. and also some scattered wind damage, hail between 1 to 2 inches. so we do have a severe weather situation on our hands. hour by hour forecast start iin

this right now at 5:30 p.m. notice all that moisture we're seeing efrlg everything coming up from the southwest. there's a lot feeding this. we have a cold front to the west of us moving into our area. we'll pause this at 11:00 p.m. we're not o done yet. we have moving through the area from west to east. so it looks like we will have some more showers and possible downpours and possible isolated thunderstorms. some of them could be strong later tonight at approximately 11:00 p.m. but i told keith and erin that everything looks like it's clearing by morning. well offshore and then i'm tracking mostly clear skies. so saturday locks like this. expected high temperatures in the 80s with clouds, thunderstorms to start the day. a mix of sun and clouds on sunday. temperatures topping out in the 80s. we have 70s on tuesday. and for the most part, a nice stretch until the following w weekend. so follow us on social media for more updates. we'll keep you updated on what to expect for tonight.
