and plans of permanent tributes to those who lost their lives. nbc 10 breaking news. >> we got two males -- female and male running. to the field. to the cornfield. >> the sound of police rushing after a man and woman who fired shots at officers. it leads to an armed standoff in the lehigh valley. i'm denise nakano. tonight, police say the two people were found dead in an attic after barricadesing themselves for hours. the standoff happened all day today near the corner of lime court pike in upper saucon township, where the man and woman locked thoe eed themselve house setting up a showdown with police. nbc 10's andundrea klein thomass at the scene. >> reporter: when officers tried

to make a stop, the suspects fled and according to the district attorney, they fired at least one shot at an officer. and tonight, that man and woman are dead. for more than nine hours, a community is on edge. >> i'm scared. is what i am. >> reporter: just before noon, an intense manhunt was under way for a man and woman believed to have shot at upper saucon township police officer. >> male has a handgun, shots were fired. >> reporter: nbc 10 got exclusive video of the suspects' car ditched in a muddy subdivision under construction. officials say police were pursuing the suspects when they ran away and fired at an officer, then police say they ran into two homes with people inside, trying to get car keys. when david returned home, he knew something was wrong. >> i walked up to my door and i stuck the key in and i couldn't open it. and i looked down and i saw a muddy footprint on the door. >> reporter: roads were closed and residents were evacuated. others were told to lock their doors. by 7:00 tonight, officers zeroed in on a home that had not been

previously checked. they yelled commands and even deployed tear gas but the suspects barricaded inside never emerged. by 9:30, it was all over. >> it ended with an apparent murder/suicide. one suspect shot the other then killed himself. >> reporter: now, names of the suspects and details about where they came from have not been released. we were told the officers never returned fire at those suspects. they only deployed tear gas. reporting live in upper saucon township, nbc 10 news. and check this out. powerful winds blew open the doors of a home depot in north jersey earlier today. the pounding rain and storm clouds scared these guys inside the store in monmouth county. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist erica martin has your most accurate forecast.

woman was found beaten and stabbed behind a high school. the woman's body was found around 3:00 this morning behind dobbins high school in north nil philadelphia. the murder of the 34-year-old was brutal and violent. the victim had multiple knife wounds from her legs to her chest and her face was beaten. a plaque marks the site where one of philadelphia's darkest days played out more than three decades ago. officials unveiled a historical marker commemorating the bombing of m.o.v.e. headquarters in cobs creek. police dropped a makeshift bomb on the rooftop bunker of the black liberation group following a day lonk standoff. 11 people died including 5 children. hundreds lost their homes in that fire that followed. ramona africa was one of two survivors and she said innocent lives paid the price for that bombing. >> we are very clear on the

replacement for obamacare still have more work to do and not much time to do it. senate leaders want a vote on the new health care bill this week, but right now, there isn't enough republican support to pass it. nevada senator dean heller the latest republican to say he will not vote for it. >> support a piece of legislation that takes insurance away from tens of millions of americans and hundreds of thousands of nevadans. >> heller joins four other republicans who oppose the bill. those four say cuts don't go far enough. several medical advocacy groups are lobbying against the plan including the american academy of pediatrics. it says certain cuts will hurt children and the aarp which is urging all senators to vote no. now tonight, pennsylvania senator bob casey is talking health care to his constituents. as part of a series of town halls he's holding across the state. the senator focused on the american health care act during the town hall in lancaster. >> the best word i came up with

is obscene. that's what i really believe that it is. >> most of the town hall was focused on health care. the crowd was mixed with democrats and republicans all concerned about a new health care bill. >> as americans, we need to be able to come together and talk these things out civilly and diplomatically. >> about 200 people showed up for today's town hall. senator casey is running for re-election next year. and tonight, the chairman of the republican party of pennsylvania is responding to senator casey's town hall. saying in part, "sadly, bob c e cas casey's march to left continues. as a senator whose state is facing skyrocketing premium costs. it's disappointing bob casey continues to play political games instead of working across the aisle." a big honor tonight for a delaware man who lost his life while saving his stepsons. michael manley wases posthumously awarded the silver

life-saving medal. manley swam out to help his then 17-year-old stepson, andrew, after he got caught in a rip current. andrew made it back to shore, but sadly, manley was swept out to sea. well, there's a new place for fun in west philadelphia. city officials cut the ribbon on a new roller skating rink. the rink was created on the side of an abandoned tennis court. now, it also includes six new fitness stations, a walking track around the rink, benches and chess tables. well, some of the coolest cars around were on display in southwest philadelphia today. the non-profit cool cars your kids brought together families of children with a rare birth diagnosis. and classic car enthusiasts for a day of fun. former eagles' coach was there with his 1926 open wheel race car. the organization supports children's hospital of philadelphia. ♪
