breaking news. a partial victory for the trump administration. the supreme court agrees to hear the president's travel ban case. philadelphia police dodge a speeding car that barrelled through a crime scene. what they think may have been the motive. it's the only place to celebrate america's birthday, a look at the big names coming to philadelphia for the wawa welcome america july 4th concert. >> announcer: nbc 10 breaking news. that news, the u.s. supreme court will hear the case on trump's travel ban. the decision is a victory for donald trump and the biggest legal controversy of his presidency. a live look outside the court. the justices agreed to enforce part of the president's ban

immediately. here is what it means. if someone is trying to come into the u.s. from one of six majority muslim countries and they have a relationship with someone here in the u.s., they will be allowed to enter. the ban will be in effect for anyone else. a live look at philadelphia international airport where travellers could soon feel that change. by the time the fall comes around and the case is reviewed by the high court, it could be moot. that's because the government is looking at the reliability of background checks on visa applications, something the travel ban was to address. as we get more information on how this will be implemented, we will pass it on to you. the spreeupreme court agree hear an appeal from a colorado bakery that refused to make wedding cases for same sex couples. it will challenge an anti-discrimination law in colorado that protects people on the basis of their sexual

orientation. a big name in the philadelphia police department is taking the stand in the seth williams corruption trial. the deputy police commissioner will testify about an alleged meeting that involved airport security. pamela osborne is live with the latest on the trial. >> reporter: the deputy commissioner gave his testimony. he was the first witness up today for the prosecution. he testified that seth williams reached out to him about businessman muhammad ali. he traveled internationally often. he told williams he was having trouble with tsa at philly international. williams told sullivan, the former chief inspector, that a constituent was having a problem at the airport. sullivan testified the d.a. told him ali was a good person or a person of good character and that he was being treated unfairly by the tsa he felt because of his islamic background. sullivan testified that he would look into it. with the da on ali's side and the issue of mistreatment being

raised because of a person's background, sullivan said it was an important issue to look into. federal prosecutors said ali gave williams gifts in exchange for favors. we will have more on this key testimony inside of that courtroom when i come back at 11:30. live outside the federal courthouse, i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. we will see you then. police are looking for the person who drove their car through a crime scene at nearly 60 miles an hour. officers were investigating a carjacking in kensington when someone drove through the crime tape, hit police bikes and nearly hit officers who had to jump out of the way. one officer broke his hand. philadelphia police are looking for the gunman who shot a man in the face. this happened just after midnight. police say the man was leaving his girlfriend's place when the shooter opened fire near the victim's car. the woman who drove the vehicle tim to the hospital told police the gunman was her ex-boyfriend. we're working to find out the

victim's condition. police are investigating a deadly shooting in kensington. nbc 10 on the scene at east allegheny avenue and b street. a man died after being shot in the head just before midnight. police say the victim was standing with his girlfriend on the corner when the gunman walked up, opened fire and then took off running. fire tore through -- tore across the porches of two row homes on west 7th street in chester overnight. fire crews put out heavy flames around 1:30 this morning. no reports of anyone being hurt. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. sunshine, blue skies, best of all, low humidity. a great start to the workweek as we take a live look at boat house row in philadelphia. glen hurricane swartz here with our forecast. >> we're not seeing a lot of wind. the wind we do see is generally

a westerly wind bringing in drier and drier air. it's nice and comfortable at the shore. there's a live view of cape may and some people right at the beaches there. temperatures generally in the mid to upper 70s with that westerly wind. it's going to get to near 80 degrees today. but not much higher than that. the humidity is unusually low for this time of the year. nothing on the radar, of course. need some clouds first. not until you get near erie, pennsylvania. even a wider view does not show very much. we do have a pretty good system off the north carolina coast. that looks like it's going to stay well offshore. as we go through the afternoon and evening, we do have some computer models showing some isolated showers popping up later -- much later today or into the evening hours. you can see how unimpressive

that is on this model, one or two little showers around. and that's about it for a shower threat for the next few days. temperatures going down tonight into the low 60s. it's not especially cool, but look at the areas north and west. 56, some of the suburbs and the lehigh valley. even in philadelphia, we're in the 60s, in the 50s in some of the suburbs. see when we heat up and look ahead to the 4th of july weekend coming up. >> thank you. the university of delaware teacher who created outrage over her comments about the death of american student otto warmbier will not be teaching at the school again. warmbier died after being released from a year of imprisonment in north korea for stealing a propaganda poster. the teacher wrote that warmbier was a typical young white rich clueless male and that his

parents are to blame for him thinking that he could get away with whatever he wanted. the university of delaware release ar released a statement saying -- the school said she was not an employee there and that we only express her opinion, she's not commenting. time for a check on the roads. >> yeah. trying to look at 95 a second ago. we lost our camera right before broad street. we were watching slow moving maintenance vehicles. construction projects on the northbound side where we had lane restrictions there approaching broad street. a little slowdown but not much right now. a crash on abington tieing things up on easton road. watch for that. checking in with the schuylkill expressway. a little slowdown because of maintenance crews there around the blue route.

today we will learn more about the gop health care plan. the non-partisan congressional office will release its estimate of the cost and how many people will be covered. more on the battle to get the bill passed before friday. >> reporter: this morning, the kickoff to a critical week with some republicans skeptical they can get health care over the goal line. >> there's no way we should vote on this next week. >> it's hard for me to see the bill passing this week. >> reporter: mitch mcconnell can only lose two gop senators or else the bill fails. right now, five republicans say

they can't vote for the bill as written, a plan that would eliminate the requirement to buy insurance and cut medicaid. passing the repeal of obamacare, a crucial campaign promise from president trump, as he now responds to president obama's criticism of the new plan. >> use my term, mean. that was my term. i want to see -- i want to see -- i speak from the heart. that's what i want to see. wasn't to see a bill with heart. >> reporter: the president confirming he called the house version mean. even after celebrating it in the rose garden last month. president trump also taking aim at his predecessor on russia and moscow'sed ming in the 2016 election. >> the question is if he had the information, why didn't he do something about it? he should have done something about it. but you don't read that. it's sad. happening now, house democratic leader nancy pelosi is in center city. she's participating in a round table discussion about women's

rights, health care and access to good food. she has been under fire for her leadership of the democratic party after recent losses in house races across the country. critics blame her for pulling the party down. president trump is tweeting about the russia investigation saying investigators have, quote, zero tapes showing that his campaign colluded with moscow to influence the 2016 election. he tweeted, the reason president obama did nothing about russia after being notified by the cia of meddling is expected clinton to win and did not want to rock the boat. it did the damage and crooked hillary no good. he went on to say the real story that president obama did nothing after being informed of russia meddling. with four months looking at russia, they have zero tapes of t people colluding. i should be given apology. president trump will welcome

the prime minister of india to the white house today. it could be a challenging visit. india's prime minister is promoting a program called make in india to encourage u.s. companies to build plants that. conflicts with the president's pledge to put america first by bringing manufacturing jobs back to the u.s. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. what a way to start the week after a pretty nice weekend. we had those storms saturday morning. pretty early. the rest of the weekend was real nice. that pattern does continue. we've got just some fair weather clouds around right now. sunshine today. up to 81 degrees in philadelphia and pretty close to that across the rest of the area. you can see these live pictures. a lot of sunshine and some nice blue sky for this time of the year. ocean temperatures, 62 degrees. atlantic city, just offshore and not much went.

you can see the arrows going different directions. that shows you there's no prevailing flow, at least not yet. this afternoon, we will probably see the sea breeze come in and these temperatures go down. cape may point at 78, ocean city at 73, summers point at 76 degrees. inland it's 79 in woodbine. as we go through the next several days, one of the things you will notice is how comfortable it is. we're just about to start the month of july. it's unusual to be this comfortable at this time of the year. for more than a day or two. showers just a slight chance tonight and again on tuesday. there will be small, not long last, not necessarily heavy. the 4th of july weekend looks like there will be changes. the heat and humidity coming back. that's for sure. the thunderstorm threat, that's

partly remains to be seen. there will be a threat of storms at least some time between the friday and tuesday period. most likely toward the end of the weekend, sunday the way it looks now would be the most likely day. nothing on satellite radar now close by. not too far away either. you have to go to missouri to find any showers coming up from the west. as we look hour by hour, the only thing we can do is pop up some isolated showers during the day tomorrow. this is the hour by hour. it's not showing anything tonight. a high resolution model. it would show these small things. there it is in the middle of the night. a couple little blips. that's about it. as far as the amount of rain, it's just not there. the temperatures, up near 80 degrees in philadelphia. low 70s down at the shore. it won't be warming up very much

there. then as we go through tomorrow, we start off kind of cool, in the 50s in many of the suburbs. we're going into the upper 70s to near 80. we do have some shower threats tomorrow afternoon. not widespread, because the humidity overall is very, very low. wednesday looks pretty dry, too. the temperatures below normal until thursday. the humidity still fairly low during that entire period. even at the shore we're in the upper 70s until thursday. it looks like a pretty good several days ahead. we head toward the weekend. the chance of showers and storms comes back. we will talk more about that coming up a little bit later. >> we will see you then. a star-studded lineup is in store as we get set to celebrate july 4th in philadelphia.

speculation supreme court justice anthony kennedy could announce his retirement. kennedy has given no public sign that he would step down this year. but he does turn 81 next month and has been on the court for nearly 30 years. kennedy's departure would allow conservatives to take control of the court. a big name in the philadelphia police department testified this morning in the seth williams corruption trial. the deputy commissioner answered questions about an alleged meeting that involved airport secu security. pamela osborne has the latest. >> reporter: deputy commissioner joe sullivan actually spoke to us after he testified in federal court this morning. take a listen to this q and a. >> seth williams set you up and put you in contact with someone of ill repute? >> it would appear to be that way. that's why there are checks and balances in place. that information came to light. >> are you amazed he did not

sullivan told williams that there was an issue and that philly police wouldn't be involved in the situation. he also testified that he told williams he shouldn't be involved either. federal prosecutors say ali gave williams gifts in exchange for favors. the defense says williams and ali were friends and williams never did anything to resolve ali's problems at the airport. that's the latest coming out of federal court this morning. live this afternoon, i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. another juror from the bill cosby trial is speaking out about their opinions on the case. the juror spoke this morning with the philadelphia enquirer. he said cosby's own words convinced him the entertainer was guilty. he called cosby's deposition eye opening. other jurors clearly did not agree. the case ended in a mistrial and the panel was unable to reach a unanimous verdict after more than 50 hours of deliberations. an accidental fire claims the life of a 9-year-old boy in

chester county. the father was hurt as he tried to rescue his son from their burning home. investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen. we're told the child was sleeping upstairs in the home yesterday morning. the boy's father arrived home to see the flames. he climbed up on the roof to break into the window. the fire was too hot, too intense to reach the boy. one other person was rescued from the home. at the jersey shore, investigators are looking for the cause of this fire that ripped through three homes at a popular resort. we will show it to you in a second. video shows the flames and smoke in wildwood crest yesterday. it could be seen for miles. the fire broke out between two homes. witnesses said within seconds propane tanks exploded as the flames spread. go homes were destroyed. the third was damaged. everyone inside did make it out safely. nbc 10 spoke to homeowners and others left shaken by the experience. >> i hear somebody yelling help.

there's this flame shooting out. you heard a loud explosion. >> i thought it was going to keep coming to my next door neighbor, my house and the business. everything here has gasoline. >> i have a pacemaker. my heart was trying to be calm. >> eight fire companies helped put out the flames. the fire chief told us vinyl material that's commonly used on newer homes is what led to the extensive damage. more details this morning in the case of a woman found beaten and stabbed behind a philadelphia high school. police today identified the victim. she lives a few blocks from where she was found saturday morning. the 33-year-old was partially clothed and had been stabbed multiple times and beaten in the head. police say they were led to the victim by a man who had been robbed by two other men in the same area. there are no suspects. the lehigh valley, autopsies are scheduled for go fugitives

who fired shots at police and were later found dead in an att attic. authorities say the man and woman died in an apparent murder suicide. the pair barricaded themselves in the house following a traffic stop on saturday. police tried to step them on outstanding warrants. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. gorgeous day at the jersey shore. a live look now at cape may where there's plenty of sunshine. very comfortable all throughout our area. folks there on the beach with umbrellas up. glenn? >> we're starting the day off with a beautiful day. we've got more to come over the next couple days. most of the weekend was nice. we're in pretty good shape here until we get toward the holiday weekend. we have some clouds building up. but they're not building up very much this way. when they spread out this way,

it's not threatening. when they build up that way, that's when you can lead to showers and storms. those are not happening right now. we have a lot of blue sky at the shore. the amount of people have increased in the last half hour. a little bit of a land breeze for a while. the sea breeze will be taking over. temperatures in the 70s across the entire area. nothing on the way of showers across the area. we've got some in new york state, close to lake erie. not much back to the west. you have to go to st. louis before you find anything. as we go through the rest of the day today, we will have some of those puffy clouds and it's generally dry as we go through the night and into the morning. but there is a slight chance of some popup showers, even during the middle of the night in some parts of the area. it will be on the cool side by morning, into the 50s.

let you know about the rest of the week and the holiday weekend coming up. >> thank you. six people are dead and 31 missing after an overcrowded tourist boat capsized in south america. the boat was reportedly filled over capacity when it began to rock back and forth and then went down in a reservoir. rescuers say the boat sank in just four minutes. amateur video shows the disaster as it was happening. survivors say none of the passengers were wearing life jackets. it's not clear yet if any americans were on board. an american airlines flight from philadelphia to germany that was forced to return over the weekend is finally at its destination. the saturday evening flight from philly to frankfurt returned on captain's orders. no emergency was declared. a passenger on the flight told us the pilot announced the reason as a mechanical issue. the flight left again last night and arrived safely. in an airasia flight over the weekend also had to turn around. video taken by a passenger on

the flight. the pilot told passengers to pray as the plane started to shake violently because of an engine problem. the flight yesterday from australia to malaysia was forced to return. the plane reversed course and landed safely. people aboard a southwest airlines plane got a scare yesterday when a woman tried to open an emergency exit in mid flight over texas. a passenger video shows officers removing the woman you see on the left there in the dark red dress. it happened on the flight from los angeles to houston. the pilot made anticipa emergen landing. she could face charges. new video of a cliff rescue in north jersey. if you look through the trees you can see emergency workers there. they are helping a man who fell 30 feet down a hill in cedar grove. the rescue effort has been going on for more than two hours now. we're working to learn the victim's condition. good samaritans are talking

about how they saved a teen dangling from a ride at six flags in new york. take a look. >> her neck is stuck. >> you can see the girl -- teenage girl dangling from the ride. her younger brother screaming for help. she hangs on for three minutes. she falls 25 feet into the arms of strangers below. >> thank you. thank you very much. >> security guards were saying back up. no. if she falls, i'm going to do everything to save her. she's not dieing on my watch. >> the girl is okay. inspectors found nothing wrong with the ride but closed it out of an abundance of caution. another rescue caught on camera. this one in northern california when a swimmer was stranded on a rock surrounded by a raging river. the swimmer thought he could make it across the river but realized it was way too much. he made it to the rock. emergency helicopter lifted the man to safety. he plans to pay that good

fortune forward by volunteering for his local search and rescue team in reno. this accident in california is being investigated as a dui. a car slammed into ia motel poo filled with children. none of the kids were seriously hurt. the driver was submerged for a significant amount of time before he was rescued. he is listed in critical condition. in southern california, a man is in the hospital after being hit by a train in san diego saturday night. witnesses say the victim was looking down at his cell phone at the time of the crash. he did not notice that he was standing too close to the track and did not see the approaching train. airbag maker takata has filed for bankruptcy. the largest filing for a japanese manufacturer. the company says it will be bought by u.s. auto parts maker key safety systems for $1.6 billion. takata faces tens of billions of dollars in cost and liability resulting from a worldwide

opening up the dishwasher. nearly 20% of americans aren't using their dishwashers. the agency says that's just pouring money down the drain. experts say dish washers use less water than hand washing and don't worry about preprinrinsin. the study showed that of all the household appliances, dish washers seem to be used the least. it's cheaper to travel this 4th of july than it has been in recent years. aaa says gas prices are about 5 cents a gallon lower than last year. 44 million americans will be traveling this holiday season. 37 million of those will be driving. taking advantage of cheaper travel this year. >> easier to decide we're going to drive versus we want to fly. >> typically heading into the summer. we see prices rise. that hasn't been the case for 2017. >> the gas isn't the only thing travellers will find cheaper this year. air fares are down 10%. rental cars are less -- are 14%

he was fine. the same could not be said for his big umbrella. the video of him blowing away is, as you could expect, has gone viral. i'm a little suspicious about that. you see the trees in the background, the leaves? they weren't really blowing. i don't know where that wind was coming from. 81 degrees for the high temperature today. lots of sunshine. we do have those fair weather clouds out there. makes it look that much prettier as you can see, a fair amount of sunshine in delaware getting a little bit more of those fair weather clouds. those type of clouds don't generally go into rain showers. we are up to 80 at marshalton in delaware. 87 in newark and middletown. 81 in reddon. 79 in lincoln.

well, in the low 70s at the delaware beaches. not too bad. a little bit of a wind off of the bay. the water temperature is close to 70 degrees. that helps a little bit if the ocean was much colder, the beaches would be colder, too. the comfort, that's the big story here. it's unseasonably comfortable. normally we get high humidity, we start talking about feels like temperatures, start talking about haze. none of that. not for several days. showers, just a chance of a couple little showers later tonight and into tomorrow. i can't say the chance of rain is zero in any one spot. but it's probably not better than 10% to 20%. the 4th of july weekend, a chance of rain is higher than 40%. at least for portions of the weekend. we will get into that a little bit later. the radar satellite not showing

anything headed this way. something is going to have to develop on top of us to produce any kind of rain at all. the moisture in the middle of the country is not even moving this way. that's a long, long way away. as we take a look hour by hour, you will see some of the showers popping up. not so much this afternoon or this evening. but overnight tonight, again, there's just not that much of it. but it's there. just have to let you know. we have low humidity this afternoon. a lot of sunshine all over the place. just beautiful day. starts cooling down tonight. you can see a shower possibility near midnight in one or two spots. by tomorrow morning, we have temperatures down into the 50s in part s of the area. still comfortable tomorrow with a mix of clouds and sun. some of the fair weather cloud cover over the next three days.
