different people. the defense said this was not you did this. i did this for you. they said he had friends that had a lot of money and these were good solid relationships and he was doing his job with one police officer in reference to the airport incident. when you look at it the u.s. attorney was able to slowly put out one person after another after another after another. it starts to look really bad and starts to look like a pattern. it was done on purpose. when you look at it it looks liej there may be something here to come back with some sort of conviction. >> a lot of folks were asking for hip to -- him to resign.

what can we expect? >> i think any of plea deal with come to some sort of resignation. you can't think you will stay in office and be paid by the taxpayers of philadelphia. i do believe a plea deal with come with immediate rez silg nation. a plea deal does not come with this. you'll have to have there in front of the judge. the judge will be the one to determine the time in in case. >> give us an idea of what's happening behind closed doors right now. we understand seth williams pleasing guilty. what's happening right now?

>> dwru the defense and prosecution who work together closely. you have seen each other during breaks. you can get an idea of where you may stand. sides continue to talk to one another. what will probably be going on is deciding what charges. each one of those have guidelines testimony judge will decide what to sentence him to. right now they are making that determination of what charges would be the charges he would plead guilty to. >> i just got an e-mail. she just got e-mailed the terms of the plea agreement. this is just coming into us.

what he is saying that he pleads guilty to one count of accepting a brine from ali. we heard him earlier this week. a max sentence of five years, a $250,000 fine and he mound admit but only pleaded guilty to that one count of voib ri. this was hard to watch to think that you would be in a situation where you have a pay for play situation. you want to think it's a fair playing field.

this particular case, i mean they are -- it makes you have a high of fife years which means he won't be anything more than five years. you seen just because the prosecutor doesn't. >> what do you think this means? it is a dad day for philadelphia. what does it mean for the office of the defense attorneyly. >> i think the tern it is white cloud -- clouds hovered over.

welcome back. we want to recap breaking news we have been following since the top of this newscast. seth williams pleads guilty in his federal corruption trial. he pleaded guilty to one bribery count. he just resigned his position as philadelphia district attorney and faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. want to take a look back at williams career up to this point. in 1992 he joined the district attorney's office after graduating are if georgetown yufrt law school n. 2005 he was appointed inspector general. in 2009 he became the first african american in the state to be elected philadelphia d.a.

reports started to surface that he did receive $160,000 in gifts between 2010 and 2015. in january of this year he was fined $62,000 by the city's board of ethics for failing to report several sources of income and gifts. the following month williams announced he would not seek reelection in the fall. he was indicted in march and bribery related charges. nbc 10 legal analyst joining us on the phone. are you there? >> reporter: i am here. >> we just went over this time line up until now. they began investigating this in 2017. it is 2017. we were about mid-way through

this trial and here we have a guilty plea, a plea deal and he agreed to resign his position. a big day and a sad day as you said earlier. >> yes. a sad day. it's a fall from grace. i think everyone agreed he had a bright future ahead of him that most likely he would be governor one day. he was doing very well. his career was going very well. unfortunately he allows himself to be compromised to a point where he put gifrts and money and trips and expensive dinners and massages and all of these other things ahead of

representing the people of philadelphia. it's very sad because he definitely had a bright much ahead of him. i don't think anyone expected he wouldn't end up on top one day. in 200 # his campaign was a new day, a new d.a. he was a lawyer, a district attorney. it was a case about corruption and bribery. it makes it a little more. >> reporter: you know, as -- to become a member of the bar in pennsylvania you have to pay close attention to anyone having anything that their past history, any kind of fraud or defeat or lying or cheating.

as an attorney myself and as the group of attorneys out here we are all out here working. attorneys do not want to be associated with anything fraudulent or anything like that. it is hard when you hear something like this happening. what it does have it the reputation and makes attorneys not look in such a high regard when you have someone supposed to be a attorney and supposed to be upholding the law and is instead committing bribery these are 2 things people steer clear of. >> again, i want to bring in the terms of the plea agreement for

those who may be just joining us. resigning from the district attorney's office and pleading guilty to one count. he faced 29 corruption related counts. should we draw anything from that pleading guilty to one into a part of this plea deal? >> i think one of the terms is he must admit to all of the things he was being accused of. >> yeah. >> so even though it is a maximum of five years he is going to have to accept the fact of telling the court that he did all of the things that the attorney's office was accusing him of that he is being prosecuted for. for him if you think things aren't looking well they will continue to stack it on and stack it on and eventually it looked too overwhelming for his team to continue to fight this

case. they are walking away with five years. anyone convicted you'll be looking at life in prison. so taking this deal works for both sides. mr. williams gets to make sure he doesn't get more than five years. >> does this mean anything for the cases that he has worked on at this point or what happens going forward with the cases that are in the d.a.'s office now? >> well, most of the time defense attorney is more of a manager position.

you know, for instance we all know the case in philadelphia changed from being charged as a misdemeanor to being charged a $25 fine. that is something that comes down from management. you know, mr. williams and people like that. so i don't believe that he actually was prosecuting any case himself. i do not believe it will effect any of the cases at the defense attorney's office. not only that but since the cases came down he took a furlt step back to make sure he didn't taint any of the prosecutions taking place in philadelphia. >> thank you for your incite. i'm sure we'll be checking in with you throughout the morning and afternoon as well as we just learned we are following this breaking news. seth williams pleading guilty in his federal corruption trial and

this. >> reporter: yeah. what we understand is that the judge has not accepted the plea yet. this is where you see seth williams day after day over the course of his trial coming out being peppered with questions and going into the city issued security car. that car is actually sitting right here right now. one of the questions were ve asking is how much are taxpayers paying to bring him to court? it cost taxpayers $31,000 when the philadelphia police department purchased it. a police officer escorts him in his capacity as district attorney doing whatever he seems necessary do the job as defense attorney -- district attorney. we know he has resigned.

of course his problem started last summer when they were able to confirm an fbi broeb was able to probe into his nonprofits. we continued to ask questions revealing information about disclosures. now, on march 22nd he was indicted with a 22 count indictment has been raised. part of his guilty plea he does admit to all of the items thousand he has pled guilty to one count of accepting a bribe.

we are not sure whether or not he will come out this door. this is where he normally gets picked up. we do not know whether he will be allowed to be released. if the judge accepts his plea. >> right. a big sticking point here. stay there for one moment. rosemary said right now federal prosecutors are laying out for the corruption count. he is pleading guilty to. he testified that he gave his capacity giving him a vacation trip to punta cana, a watch, a $7,000 loan, a $3,000 couch, it goes on and on.

tell us about that in your reporting that you came across in your reporting. >>. >> yaechlt so it involves the district attorney's lifestyle. there were cloiss over the course of five years that he decided to accept more than $175,000 in gifts. they included clothes. there's a couch that is mentioned as one of these gifts. the $45,000 roof and construction work that we mentioned. the problem with these gifts under pennsylvania law is they did not report them they were all reported late. it was a $62,000 fine. he still owes that money to the city of philadelphia as far as we know. the order has been issued. he has been fined. normally they would garnish somebody's wages. it now becomes a completely different matter based on what's

will come out of the courthouse. this is where he has entered and exited from last week onward. the question is whether or not he will be released until his sentencing or whether or in the he will be remanded. usually what happens is there's a hearing where witnesses can be called. that may be haas going on here. as people have come out of the courtroom we have heard it will be a why. as we told you repeatedly, we have been asking questions about his disclose sures as well as financing of his come pain as well as his nonprofit foundation. it seems to be the things that move the spotlight onto him that lead to the march 22nd indictment. it includes bribery and fraud. right now as we have been reporting throughout the hour he entered a guilty plea.
