11:00 pm
vantage point. once again, the 17 of ricky stenhouse jr. had filled that hole and a big hit by the 41 of kurt busch. the red flag has been displayed. >> those are the angles that just -- tremendous impact. 41 down and the bottom of the racetrack gets caught in the quarter panel, and you see the action start happening on the outside. 41 gets clipped. turns right. on the wall. >> the other car came down. it's hard for me to see where it first starts. we always want to point fingers. right here, they got together, but -- >> it's simple to me that i think ricky stenhouse has committed to the top. kyle larson was laying down, and did not know or thought he was protecting. 17 is running straight. 42 is moving to the right. that's what you do. it's six to go at daytona. you have to protect and be
11:01 pm
aggressive. if the 42 can squeeze, he'll have it down the straightaway. >> it's important to note when these cars are inches apart, these cars don't track straight. when you get beside another car, that can push your car away, or pull it to it. sometimes you have no wheel whatsoever, and you get it to the guy in front of you. i think that's close racing late in the race. i agree with you. stenhouse never moves. he is perfectly straight here. nevertheless, they had the caution. >> once again, not a mid pack accident. this is up towards the front. these are cars racing for the lead. up in the air. it's not the first time for kyle larson at daytona.
11:02 pm
where he has been up in the air in a car. if we go back to 2013, the xfinity series. >> kyle larson up into the fence. that's twiactually the engine t had come out of that car. it got caught up in the catch fence. the front end of the car complete lly torn off. so kyle larson up in the air once again in daytona. this time, in the monster energy cup series. >> the result of this, top three. ricky stenhouse jr. was involved in the incident. >> these tri-ovals are not loaded and as they get hit, coming to the start/finish line, we see the action as they get hit by other cars, it propels
11:03 pm
them up into the air, and unlike the back stretch, the front stretch that catch fence is coming out. this is on board with a.j. allmendinger out of the helmet. you see the 42 off to his right. goes airborne and that's it. the 47 has passed the accident, and he can just stay wide open. >> he is clear for that angle. the 42 definitely came up. >> once again, what an amazing job by nascar to make sure these cars stay on the ground. they dove straight back down to the ground. >> and thank goodness. you saw the kyle larson replay from 2013. here's austin dillon from 2015. same idea. the difference is he climbed multiple cars and you see the damage to the fence, the damage to the car. now the fence, as violent as
11:04 pm
that is, and it's always awful to see. remember, the goal of that catch fence is to keep the vehicle inside the race facility. and it did that, and that occasion, huge impact. huge damage, but it's great to see the 42 come back on the ground and stay below the safe barrier. >> red flag once again displayed at daytona. >> ty dhillillon out in front oe field. a.j. allmendinger, the top three at daytona with it will be five laps to go when they come back to start/finish line. >> we talk about safety innovation, and it's not about soft walls and devices and seats but the body itself. as we spin the car around, it goes up over the roof and that creates the pressure. it lifts the slab up much like an airplane wing.
11:05 pm
when that thing gets backwards, it creates lift. >> it opened up and released that pressure and keeps the front of the car down. the roof doesn't have a hole in the roof. it's just like an airplane like you see when an airplane is trying to slow down. the flaps come up, and it's like that. with the hood, it lets the air up from underneath the hood. >> they are designed to make downforce and seal up. what happens is when you take that vehicle that's sealed to the asphalt, and it even breaks the seal a little bit, it instantly turns into an airplane and it wants to fly. it wants to fly like a wing. nascar had to come up with devices that weren't there all the time, but they would deploy in certain situations. that's what the roof flap and hood flaps do. >> another car didn't drive underneath. had a car driven underneath,
11:06 pm
there are nothing roof flaps can do at that point. good thing they came on the racetrack cleanly. >> another wild ride for kyle larson at daytona. take a look at who is involved in this crash. on lap 153. it's a 160-lap race. kenseth has led. kurt busch, kyle larson. michael mcdowell. quite a few cars involved in this one to bring out the red flag. one driver who is familiar with getting a win and a restricter plate track is the driver of the 38, david ragan. see if we can chat with david. we'll try to dial up his radio. >> david, it's jeff burton. you got us? >> yeah. i got you, jeff. what's going on? >> well, you sound pretty calm.
11:07 pm
we're not. from what we have been watching, it's pretty wild. how is it down there? >> our shriners hospitals for children drove pretty good tonight, and we allowed good pit calls on pit road, and we haven't had to take four tires every time. our car drives good, and hopefully we can have help here with just a few laps to go and see if we can make it interesting. >> we see you so close to winning the daytona 500. we have seen you win here at the 400 and at talladega. without telling your competition what's on your mind, how will you get this race won? >> i won't be able to do it myself. i have to have somebody help push me a little bit. i wish my old teammate was out here so he could help me a little, but i have to make moves that the car behind me can follow and read what they are doing. the best way that i can and try to make the right moves that will allow him to push me hard because everybody is going to be
11:08 pm
really aggressive. i'm sure we'll be three wide in these last few laps and we'll just keep being smart, driving hard and hopefully, we'll have an opportunity coming off of turn four. >> david, we really appreciate you letting us talk to you. we'll let you alone and let you get this race on. >> everybody, stay tuned. it's going to be exciting. >> nobody is going to be changing the channel with just five laps to go. david ragan, i mentioned has had success on restricter plate track. his first win, july 2, 2011 right here in daytona. all smiles. and then his second career win came at talladega. >> you mentioned his teammate, and this is why he wishes he was out there behind him because this run, from really mid pack to the front at talladega was created off those two guys right there sticking with one another. he never left his rear bumper
11:09 pm
and he was committed to his teammate, and that allowed david ragan to make those moves. >> the cars once again now rolling. gone from a red flag condition to yellow flag condition. ty doillon second. and a.j. allmendinger is third. let's see if we can chat with him. >> a.j., guys in the booth. you with us? >> i gotcha. >> coming to five to go. how will you make this happen? >> just got to see which line the 13 picks and can't really, you know, how it is, can't set a plan here. try to pick the best time for the best run and got to look in the mirror a lot. there is a lot going on, but, you know, we have got this chevy car, and the first half of the race has come us to, and we have got a shot. that's all i can ask for.
11:10 pm
>> thank you for letting us ride along. we appreciate. try to make this thing work. >> thanks guys. >> we have five to go. for a race win, and we just talked to the guy running second, the guy running third. that is incredible that they are willing to take that time and by the way, can refocus. can say, okay. it's a red flag. i'm catch my breath, have a conversation and then turn the switch and try the win this race. >> what a relief it is to see kyle larson released from the care center after going airborne. what did you feel behind the 42? >> i was leading that front line or whatever. 13, and i saw the 38 kind of duck marylaed him inside, and i squeezed ricky, and wrecked myself. i hate that i tore up a lot of cars. i was pretty loose at that
11:11 pm
point, and i was kind of hanging on, but i was hoping to get clear to the lead, but once the 38 got inside me, i was just trying to leave him room, and kind of the way the air works, i felt like it pushed me out a little bit, and i was too high into ricky, so i caused that one. >> glad to see you're okay. >> thanks. >> unfortunate ending to kyle larson's night as well. danica patrick was also involved and she was checked and released from the care center. as well as kurt busch, and the 21, ryan blaney, all checked and released from the care center. legislati less than five laps to go, and once again, we have to continue to talk about the points. >> look. imagine the impact. imagine if ty dillon wins and that moves this cut line down. now we have a new winner. david ragan. moves the cut line. a.j. allmendinger, moves the cut line. think about -- we have talked about how hard it will be to get
11:12 pm
into these playoffs. don't forget, paul menard and erik jones. we have people in the top seven and top six that have a chance to win this race, and that changes who can make these playoffs. >> don't forget about kyle busch. he is running ninth, and without a win. den n denny hamlin without a win. drivers can jostle up what we're sighing in the playoff standings. >> it's easy to tell you who has a win. stenhouse in fourth. jimmie johnson in seventh. there you have it. everybody else. 13, 14, 15, 16. everyone else is looking for their first win of the season. >> how many times have you see a late start? this doesn't end well. we have seen how aggressive it has been to this point. it's going to be four, maybe three to go coming to get the checkers. so the aggression level, as high
11:13 pm
as it has been, it's going to have to get even higher to win this race. >> let's go back to kelly. she is with -- >> i have ryan blaney who has been released from the care center. you were up for much of the ninth. what was the vantage point? >> i don't know what happened. i saw the 42 get turned. up in the air a little bit, and i couldn't really miss him. i was already on the top, and i t-boned him, but it happened fast. we had a great car, and we had the lead for a bit, and we were racing hard. everyone was racing really hard all night, and we got shuffled out. i didn't pick a very good lane. we were working our way back forward, and that happened, and that stinks. i can't thank motor craft enough, and that's the way it goes sometimes. we'll go onto kentucky. >> thank you, ryan. >> you mentioned it. it was a few laps ago, he was with the lead, and made a
11:14 pm
mistake -- or not. lost that track position that got up to the back, and he was working his way back up, but that's the accident he ended up getting in, and now interesting. ty dillon decides to take the outside in front of ricky stenhouse jr. make perhaps splitting up 38 and 17. ricky stenhouse jr. and a.j. allmending allmendinger. >> of the 40 that started, there are 25 still out on the racetrack. as you mentioned, ty dillon, leading this field now. ty dillon, just 25 years old. welcome, north carolina. he is an arca champion. he won the series back in 2011. he has run the camping world truck series. he has run through the xfinity series. but now in a position where he could get his first monster energy cup series win at the
11:15 pm
biggest stage. >> and let's not forget, we talked about the front two rows, but back in row three. clint bowyer. 165 wins since he has been -- excuse me. 165 races since he has won his last race. not since 2012 has he gone to victory lane. kevin harvick won last week. i mean, nothing would be better for him to end up and breaking the long drought and going to victory lane. >> what i saw prior to the caution, that 17 car, ricky stenhouse jr., and the speed right there. he has the best car pushing. >> can they complete three laps? that will be the question. coming back into the geico restart zone. three laps to go. green flag back in the air. david ragan on the bottom of the racetrack. ty dillon on that second line. a.j. allmendinger, and a good
11:16 pm
push he has. ragan has cleared that outside line. way out in front. david ragan looking for his third win. could it come once again at a restricted plate track? and around goes the 77. erik jones slides into the infield. also the 11 of denny hamlin goes around. caution has not come out yet. now it does. erik jones slid. denny hamlin slid. and it was david ragan that is score as the race leader now for the restart and we will be going overtime. >> david ragan did everything right in that lead. >> take a look. this was mid pack where we saw
11:17 pm
erik jones pop out of. >> clint bowyer. gets up the racetrack a little bit. now he is three wide. one car jammed him. moved down with the side of him. pushed him to the side. i'm not sure what happened to 11. not sure what made him go to the left, but just -- some reason he went to the left. >> look at the 11. we see erik jones sliding. >> maybe jamie got hit from behind. you saw him to to the right and then the left. he wasn't turning the wheel like that for no reason. either he got hit or something happened for sure. >> erik jones on pit road. they will try to get him back out. not a lot of damage to that car. potentially could be
11:18 pm
competitive. >> just so far back now with just a few laps left. it will be hard to make it up. >> rick, you mentioned it. this will be overtime. we have documented that most of these leaders came a wrong time ago. 109 or 107 for fuel. there have been a tremendous amount of yellows, so they should have saved enough fuel. even though we think they have saved enough fuel, they have to go out and do the work under caution. shutting the car off to make sure they have enough. >> david ragan out in front. let's listen to his radio. >> you want to help. my next question. >> sure. he'll say he'll help, and that's pretty much the best shot we got. he has been good on the bottom, and we'll push it. i think that's our best bet. >> it would be two fords working together against two chevrolets. >> i think that means nothing. i think it's driver versus driver at this point. david ragan, a veteran. he knows they are going to tell him whatever he wants to here.
11:19 pm
he said, he'll say he'll help him. the guy that's pushing -- you will pick the guy you think can push you the best, and he is there to take that win from you. david is smart enough to say he says he'll help. that doesn't mean he is. >> with kurt busch now changed into his plain clothes, you got lucky, and it has been crazy from the drop of the green. >> i was hoping to be closer to the front, and i was low, and we just got clipped. wrong place at the wrong time. i didn't get the daytona sweep, but looked like 43 clipped us. i'm good. the cars are safe, and thank nascar for that. we were really hoping for a daytona sweep, but that's the way it goes. we're all kind of in a funnel, and there's nowhere to go to the low side.
11:20 pm
i can't go further left because i'll rip my splitter off in the grass, and maybe we have more runoff area to escape wrecks. >> thank you, kurt. >> they continue to clean up around the 11 of denny hamlin. and hamlin looked to have had some contact from the 24 of chase elliott. hamlin was on his inside. elliott looked like he slammed into him. you see denny was trying to drive back, but then the fire from underneath the hood made him think twice. he dropped the window and jumped out of that car. >> under this caution period, 48 pitted from the eighth position. his teammate, kasey kahne also hit pit road. >> we will go overtime, and we want to take a look at the overtime line on the back stretch.
11:21 pm
once they get the green flag, if the leader get to the overtime line, before the caution comes out, the race will be official if a caution comes out after the leader has passed that overtime line. if they don't get to the overtime line and a caution comes out, nascar will try to restart the race and they will do that as many times as they have to to get a green flag finish. >> jeff, you brought it up in the xfinity race today that ended under overtime. after the leaders came, the caution came out, and everyone has to think of that as a start/finish line. we have seen how aggressive they are, and there's a good chance they can end a point near that line, and they have to be aggressive near one and two. >> there is adam. that is david ragan's older brother, and probably his biggest fan. >> that's a nice kid.
11:22 pm
goes around, talks to everybody. hometown favorite. really, really good guy to talk to. fun. full of energy. >> david ragan, got his break in what they called "the gong show." it was their talent pool where they tried to figure out the next driver to put behind the wheel of their car. david ragan with two wins going up against ty dillon around the outside with no cup series wins. >> look at the top six here. is this the top six you would have picked to win this race when the race started? >> ty dillon, and david ragan in row one. row two, a.j. allmendinger, and ricky stenhouse jr. row three, paul menard and michael mcdowell. we are in overtime. sponsored by credit one bank.
