north korea basked in what the pentagon confirmed north korea launched the intercontinental ballistic missile. it flew for a record of 37 minutes. north korea now has a missile capable of reaching alaska. the move is prompting an immediate response from the u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson saying north korea's provocation represents a new escalation of threat. u.s. ambassador nikki haley is calling for an emergency meeting of the u.n. security council today as the u.s. looks for a global response. the launch is the tenth test since president trump took office wasn't it occurring on the eve of trump's visit to europe. what if any response will come from the u.s.. now we have it all covered. we're tracking the latest from

london and warsaw with the president will kick hoof his european visit. what's the latest on the nuclear standoff with north korea? >> reporter: good morning. as you mentioned the u.s. has confirmed that north korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile yesterday, the first time being successfully tested an icbm marking a significant advance. the test proves they have the capability to launch a missile that could hit alaska. the range is between 4,000 and 5,000 miles. whether it could deliver a nuclear war head is still a question. north koreans haven't seemed to have a tip. north korea state tv quoted kim jong-un saying the test was a gift to the americans on independence day.

the report warned of possibility of more tests saying he's ordered his officials to frequently send big and small gift packages to the yankees. in response u.s. and south korea have conducted military exercises in the region and a statement by two countries said the militaries warn self-restraint which is a choice is all that separates us from war and they are both able to change their choice. secretary of state rex tillerson described this as a new escalation of threat to america and the world and as you said the u.s. has asked for an emergency meeting of the security council, probably later today. but bringing alaska within range the missile test has considerably upped the stakes. >> really troublesome news. now to matt bradley in warsaw where the president will kick off his trip to europe.
