today's meeting comes after the president acknowledged just 24 hours ago, that the kremlin meddled in the 2016 u.s. election. but then adding, nobody really knows for sure. we got it all covered beginning with peter alexander in hamburg. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt and savannah, good morning to you. presidents trump and putin have seen each other, greeting each other with a handshake a short time ago. but the substantive meeting, that's still to come. the president this morning, tweeting that he's looking forward to it. saying there is much to discuss. president trump greeting german host angela merkel, braising her as leaders met in hamburg. but stealing the show, president trump's and putin's closed-door session. the spy master on his fourth american president.

an official familiar with the meeting telling nbc news, there will likely only be six people in the room. the presidents, secretary of state rex tillerson, his russian counterpart and a pair of translaters. tillerson describing the u.s./russia relationship attal all time throw. an investigation into russian interference in the election. and the president refusing to admit russia's role. >> i think it was russia. but i think it was probably people and/or runs and i see nothing wrong with that statement. nobody really knows. nobody really knows for sure. >> reporter: a growing number of democrats are pressing the president to confront putin about moscow's meddling, sending this letter. on the agenda, possible areas of cooperation, like fighting isis. and more fraught pressure points, including ukraine, syria

and north korea. just days after dismissing beijing's willingness to help, here, more optimistic as he's never giving up on china's president. anti-capitalist protesters clashing with police in riot gear. smoke bombs and water canons, dispersing the crowd. also on-tap, a meeting with mexico's president, their first meeting since the election. those thorny issues certain to be a topic of conversation between the two men today. back in hamburg, you can hear police helicopters overhead. we heard flash-bangs, more than a dozen of them. more protests, after 111 officers were injured yesterday.

sporadic outbreaks around town. we've seen blaockades. we're hearing from a spokesperson for the first lady that she is unable to leave the residence where they are staying at because of the protests. she was supposed to attend a boat trip and go to a climate center. that's now off. the first lady tweeting moments ago, thinking of those hurt in the hamburg protests. hope everyone stays safe. police are bracing for more. 100,000 protesters expected over the next couple days. >> peter alexander in hamburg for us. the president made no secret of his hopes to improve relations with moscow. but for past presidents, that's not been so easy. former president obama's attempt at a reset, largely collapsed. what makes the russian leader so difficult to deal with?

president trump, which is why so many wonder what he's up to. analysts say this meeting could be a win-win for vladimir putin. if nothing comes out of it, putin can say that trump is weak, that he's hamstrung by domestic politics. and if trump wants to make a deal on almost anything, putin can say the u.s. had to come to the kremlin for help. matt? savannah? back to you. >> richard engel, thank you. richard will have more on msnbc's on assignment atted: e9 eastern time. let me bring in jeremy bash and michael mcfaul who served as ambassador during the obama administration. is it essential, if president trump wants to say this meeting is a success, is it essential that he confront vladimir putin on meddling in the u.s. election? >> absolutely. he has to go in with a strong message and say, we know what you did last summer. we're not going to take it anymore.

it was unwelcome and you have to cut it out. >> ambassador mcfaul, by his comments the last couple of months and even yesterday, he said, yes, i think it was russia, but nobody really knows for sure, hasn't president trump boxed himself in? hasn't he given vladimir putin the perfect response to any accusations? >> they've already reacted to those comments, in the kremlin. one of his spokesperson said, we agree with president trump, that it is not clear who did this. and maybe other countries were involved. that was a very inopportune moment to say that, precisely because i agree with jeremy, if he wants to win putin's respect, he has to be tough with him. he has to say, i know what you do. when i'm president, you're not going to do it again. >> ambassador, you've been in the room many times with meetings with putin. >> we were in with obama and putin. >> i wasn't in the room. you were. what is it like?

is he a poker player? a chess player? what is trump walking into? >> he's been doing this for 17 years. our president, this is his fourth meeting with an american president. he always comes prepared. he always does his homework. he has an agenda. he does his psychological work about his -- he's a kgb operative. he used to do this for a living. he's going to come in with a game plan. my suspicion is his game plan will be simple. donald -- maybe he won't say donald. but he'll say, president trump, you and i can do great things if we work together because we think the same thing. now, the fake news people, the deep state, heeds goi's going t those phrases. they're our enemy. you and i can unite to do something together. >> i want to go back to something you slipped in there. he said vladimir putin will respect president trump more if

president trump goes right at him and say i know you meddled. if he doesn't bring that up in a direct term, vladimir putin will sense weakness. >> think about the converse. had the americans or the chinese done this in russian elections, how do you think vladimir putin would react to that? he thinks he needs to push back. and make no mistake, putin knows what he did in our election. for trump to not bring it up, that's a sign of weakness. >> there's a lot of topics. syria, isis, north korea and the threat they pose. what would be a headline, jeremy, coming out of the meeting that would show there's a possibility of cooperation between our countries moving forward? >> there can be conversation about deconflicting the skies of syria. i think the president has to go in there saying don't continue to prop up the assad regime. we have counterterrorism operations we have to undertake the we need you to stop in the

middle east and ukraine and europe. >> we're looking at the live picture. this is angela merkel in the summit room. we saw vladimir putin, a few moments ago, president trump will be along, as well. according to white house aides, the president doesn't have a set a agenda. maybe he is not telling us. would it be smart to go in there and wing it? >> no. putin is not going to wing it. i'll give you a concrete example. i fully expect putin to explain all the bad things that president obama did. in the first meeting that president obama had with putin, he spent the first hour complaining and explaining about the mistakes. and he's going to want trump to react to that. president trump needs to know what his response is. when putin says the sanctions they put in place, they were illegal. president trump, you should lift them. he's got to have a response. he can't just wing it.

for us. hi, miguel. good morning. >> reporter: initial reports that the passenger tried to storm the cockpit are untrue. this is a serious situation. one flight attendant and a passenger were injured when another passenger got out of hand in the air. tense moments thursday, after an unruly first class passenger forced a delta airlines flight headed to beijing, to return to seattle-tacoma airport. a man aboard delta flight 129 assaulted a flight attendant. several passengers then helped restrain the alleged attacker until the plane landed back in seattle. sources tell nbc news, plastic handcuffs or a device like zip ties, were used to restrain the passenger. with the incident creating frustration and rattling nerves, the airport released a statement

overnight, reading in part, two were treated and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the subject was taken into custody by police. the seattle fbi says the 23-year-old man is from florida, and was removed from the aircraft shortly after 7:00 p.m. local time. law enforcement officials say the incident is not considered to be a national security threat. this morning, the fbi's investigation is ongoing. they hope to release more information later this afternoon, when the suspect has his first appearance in federal court. savannah and matt, back to you guys. >> miguel, thank you. a five-story apartment block collapsed near naples. rescuers are digging to find people that are trapped. images of the partially clamsed building reveal the interior of

some apartments. no word on what caused the collapse. but there are words that construction work was been doing. bill cosby will go on trial for a second time. cosby's first trial ended in a mistrial last month because jurors were unable to come to a unanimous verdict on any of the charges. the new trial will take place in montgomery county. the 79-year-old comedian faces three charges for indecent assault for allegedly drugs and sexually assaulting andrea constand at his home in 2004. take a look as a runaway umbrella makes its way on to the course. riders were forced to dodge and weave their way past that wayward parasol. it didn't cause crashes or injuries. you can watch stage eight of the tour de france here on nbc.

the accident. venus williams will battle it out on the court at wimbledon today. the same day her attorneys are battling in a court of law, over a fatal crash involving the tennis superstar. 78-year-old jerome barson eventually t lly died from his injuries. the key contention, black boxes in both vehicles. williams won an emergency protective order this week from having the cars further inspected until after the hearing. lawyers want to examine williams' suv. >> ms. williams' lawyers are attempting to stop us from getting the information. >> reporter: williams' attorney says he wants a judge to establish a protocol that will govern the inspection that will ensure extraction of critical information from both parties in a way that preserves the evidence. nbc news has learned that police have security footage related to

the accident but won't release it. the police report says williams was at fault for violating the right of way in the accident on june 9th in palm beach gardens. the barson family has filed a wrongful death suit against williams. in a statement, her attorney called the case an unfortunate accident. and williams posted a message on her facebook page saying, i'm devastated and heartbroken by this accident. my heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of jerome barson and i continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers. right now, she's playing at wimbledon, getting emotional when asked about the accident at a press conference earlier this week. >> i'm completely speechless and it's just -- n >> reporter: now, williams is trying to focus on her game, while her lawyers take on her legal trouble. venus williams was not issued any tickets in regards to this

accident. and police say she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. back to you guys. >> all right, tammy leitner, thank you. i'm going to a story that may give hope to millions of americans to this nation's powerful prescription epidemic. >> a new report shows it's not too late to stop the ep demmepin its tracks. stephanie gosk has that. >> reporter: for so many opioid addicts in this country, the beginning starts with a prescription from a doctor. one of the ways to slow down the epidemic is to slow down the prescriptions. the cdc is making progress. but opioids are way over prescribed. and people don't realize how easy it is to get hooked. this morning, the cdc says the number of opioid prescriptions is still too high. >> enough for every american to be on opioid meditations around

the clock for three weeks. that's just too much. >> reporter: they have fallen 18% between 2010 and 2015 overall, in one in five u.s. counties, the numbers are actually up. mainly, low-income white communities with high unemployment. and higher rates of diabetes and arthritis. in an extreme case, oklahoma doctor described 1,800 pills in a single month. she is expected to plead not guilty to second-degree murder charges. more 33,000 people died of overdoses in 2015 alone. in the war against opioid abuse, some states have promising results. between 2010 and 2015, prescriptions decreased by 85% in ohio. 80% in florida and 82% in kentucky. >> things like a broken leg or a kidney stone, don't require

opioids. >> reporter: this medical center started a program to replace opioids with alternatives. people are saying i'm in so much pain, i need something else. >> what people are discovering is that effective pain management, specifically the first couple of days after an injury, can be accomplished with different medications. >> reporter: a slow by ke but k change in the medical community that can save lives. >> it's a challenge to overcome challenges that they need opioid medicines to manage their pain. >> reporter: the cdc refers to doctors when to take opioids. it's never good to take the painkillers to take them for long term. and to give them for acute pain like surgery and late-stage cancer. >> i had a back injury. i said give me two.
