tonight is an outpouring of support for these pets after a crash into an animal shelter. a home invasion. how the homeowners turned the tables on intruders. and someone in the draft gets hurt. a direct report on how he's feeling. that breaking news just feet away from where kid were playing in an inflatable pool. a man is in critical condition right now, and police say he was shot many times. it happened just after 4:00 on east atlantic avenue in kensington. so far no arrests have been made.

>> i felt something at 2:00 in the morning. i felt some kind of pain. heartache for a family in delaware. a woman crashed her van into an animal shelter in newcastle county. she died and so did several animals. good evening. i'm denise nakano. tonight as the family is mourning the loss of a mother of five, the animal shelter is working to help the dozens of pets impacted by the fiery crash. drew smith is outside that animal shelter in newcastle, and drew, this developed overnight. >> they had to get these animals out of here. the whole building had the sprinkler system going. apparently this woman was driving, ended up in this parking lot, jumped this curb and smashed into this wall. on the other side, there were a hundred animals in there. the brandywine animal shelter turned into crisis mode about

11:15 this morning. it happened when a van came crashing through the newcastle shelter. a dog and other cats did not survive. some of the animals are now in the organization's westchester location, busy today as they hope in a surge of adoptions to make room for the extra pets. >> some of the animals are terrified and others have bounced right back. >> this shows the impact zone, but fire, smoke and water from the sprinklers created an emergency throughout the building. >> i took the dogs, put them in crates, helped them find people to hold them. >> reporter: neighbors rushed over to help. >> it broke my heart. >> reporter: police say they're trying to figure out what happened to the driver, 34-year-old mother of five, latoya cooper. cooper's mother and many of her family members joined in an emotional prayer here this afternoon. meanwhile restoration workers are already trying to fix the shelter. >> we want to get up and running as quickly as we can. >> reporter: and there has been a lot of support for latoya

cooper's family as they remember her down here. they're preparing for a vigil, actually, at this hour, and you can see all the balloons that have been left. we asked her mother did she know what cooper was doing out here last night? she did not know where she was going or why she was out. we're live in newcastle. i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. a car crashed into this montgomery county dunkin' donuts overnight. fortunately, the store on eastern providence was closed at the time. t he tried to direct the driver to swerve from hitting something and that's when they crashed. no one was hurt. new details about a deadly hope invasion and stabbing in burlington county's most desirable neighborhoods. the homeowner stabbed two guys who broke into his morristownhome overnight. one of the men died from the stabbing and the other one is

recovering. they said this is an isolated incident. officers were called to west lafayette street around 3 3:30 find a person dead. police say that suspect was almost immediately taken into custody. no word yet on the identity of the victim. a delaware boy is taking another step in his recovery from a shooting. a spoerks perskesperson for thef deshawn banner said this six-year-old has been moved from icu into a facility. police are still searching for the suspect. working on a sunday. pennsylvania lawmakers are still trying to figure out how to pay for its budget. a deal needs to be made by tomorrow at midnight, and options for bringing in money include expanding gambling laws, borrowing more than a billion dollars, and a possible tax increase. well, local school principals participated in a 5k

fun run and walk this morning near the philadelphia museum of art. they ran the "rocky" steps and posed for pictures with the statue. principals from around the country are in the city this week for a national conference. and a 5k run in bucks county offered a sweet twist. this was a competitive eat and run event in warminister. at the halfway mark, participants stopped and ate a pint of vanilla ice cream. that was the requirement. they had to eat the entire pint before they could finish up the second leg of the run. nbc 10 and medford, new jersey where some track and field worked on their skills. and if arts and crafts are your thing, that haddonfield was the place to be this weekend. the arts and crafts festival just wrapped up. more than 250 vendors took part

wildfires in southern california are forcing hundreds of people from their homes. this fire near santa maria is by far the worst. it's burned 20,000 acres since it started thursday where firefighters are working to battle the flames in searing temperatures. the question here, do little girls think they're just as smart as boys? that was the question that drove a psychologist and princeton philosopher. for the study, 400 boys and girls ages 5 to 7 answered the questions and worked out puzzles

new tripoli at 80, bass at 78 degrees. as far as the pa suburbs, also seeing really comfortable temperatures with low dew points, so not very humid at all. west bradford township currently at 78 degrees. warrenton 83 degrees. new hope at 82 and newtown currently at 79 degrees. right now, sadly. radar images picking up on not much. we do have an area of high pressure keeping everything high ask dry, but i am tracking some scattered showers moving into our areas, scattered at best for tomorrow. let's go ahead and start our hour-by-hour forecast. at 6:00 p.m. it gets into motion tomorrow. tomorrow by 3:30 a.m., we are seeing some spotty showers at best moving across the area, but everything really mainly dry. what i do want to mention is that we will see a couple extra clouds developing later in date, and notice here at 3:00 p.m.,

fultz sprained his ankle in the last quarter with the warriors. the x-ray came back negative, revealing a lateral ankle sprain. he will face a one to two-week recovery period. today fultz was asked how he's feeling. >> great. glad to be alive right now. i'm good, i'm walking around. feel great. >> reporter: are you surprised it feels as good as it does today because it didn't look that good last night? >> i'm not surprised. i take good care of my body. the physicians made me feel better. in the end, everything happens for a reason. >> here he is with no noticeable limp on the court. seeing fultz get hurt was a reminder of the long list of injuries playing in a regular-season game. jo ell

the phillies hit six round-trippers. phillies heading for the all-star break with a 7-1 win. >> we should have probably saved three of those home runs for another day, but it shows you what the guys are capable of doing. cahill is pretty tough. he's got a lot of movement on his pitches and he made some mistakes and we capitalized. the key to any team's success is when you make mistakes and you don't miss them. if we continue to do that, we'll improve, and that's the whole idea. >> so all the phillies are off this is his second all-star appearance. hopefully we'll see you later. back to you.
