these four men were killed. >> it was tough. he was taken from us. but this mystery is far from solved as families wait for loved ones to be found and identified. >> they're tenderly, painstakingly, referenceally recovering the remains of people that they do not even know. >> and that painstaking recovery continues at this hour. our cameras spotted more people going in and out of that farm tonight where we've now learned all four missing men were killed. >> it's one of many revelations in this case today. they tell a tale of money, drugs, and murder. >> it all started with cosmody nard doe's confession, according to his attorney, he admitted to participating in all four murders. >> tonight nbc10 has learned from a source close to the investigationing that he some of the victims were shot and some of them were burned. and investigators are looking into the possibility thatdy nard doe had help. but the biggest revelation of

all could explain why these murders happened. >> nbc10 continues to cover every angle of this story. we put together a full time line of events and how friends and neighbors are responding to this new information. >> let's begin with brandon huffman live at the center of this investigation. brandon, the big question people still have is why. what have we learned about a possible motive? >> reporter: well, jacqueline, this may boil down to money and drugs. dy nard doe reportedly felt cheated during three drug transactions with the missing men leading to the ultimate power move. he killed them. some shot, some burn and he left investigators to pick up pieces. shackled and expressionless in his orange jumpsuit, cosmo showed a bit of remorse after his shocking confession. >> i'm sorry. >> he lowered his head as he stepped into a police van at the courthouse. his apology came moments after he told investigators he killed

tom mayo, mark sturgis, jimi taro patrick -- the 20-year-old's attorney told us why his client came clean. >> and the commonwealth will not be seeking the debilitate. >> reporter: a source close to the investigation told usdy nard doe shot more than one man, burned at least two of them and buried all of them on his parents' farm. a person with firsthand knowledge of the confession said he shot the men because he felt cheated or threatened during three drug transactions. that person sadie nard doe sold thousands of dollars of marijuana as well as handguns to area residents. >> he was a very nice, polite young man. nothing what you see on tv now. doesn't look like him. >> reporter: we spoke to a woman who served withdy nard doe on the drug and alcohol advisely board last year. she said after getting involved,

he mysteriously quit months later. >> he just up and left. >> no reason, no. >> no reason what soever. >> is that heart breaking for you? >> yes, it is. it is because if he needed help, he could have gotten it from any one of us members. >> reporter: the d.a. hasn't commented on money or drug motive and is expected to talk tomorrow morning at 11:00. live, nbc 20 news. >> our team coverage copies with drew smith. still hard at work tonight searching that farm for more evidence trying to get the victims' families some answers. >> yeah, we saw how determined these crews were working through the night and they're still out there. even today in tough conditions they want to find as much evidence of those human remains as possible. in heavy rain, excavators were

on the move at the 90-acre farm owned by cosmody nard doe's parents. work still going strong after his lawyer said the 20-year-old confessed. >> i didn't think that was going to happen. that's insane. >> reporter: a source close to the investigation tells nbc 10, forensic evidence was found in a barn and the 12-foot common grave where three bodies were buried. the source saysdy nard doe told police where to find the fourth body as workers loaded up on fresh rain boots and gear to keep the tents bob the dig sites dry. there still aren't positive identifications on three of the four missing men. even during periods of heavy rain tonight, excavation continued at the site just beyond this hill. reaction to the news of the confession was muted here at the scene. people did bring down flowers for the families. >> we just kept hoping abpray g abpraying. >> reporter: church leaders reached out to comfort the family. >> i went to visit at the house and they weren't there. because they were there and i called on phone a few times.

>> reporter: many of them are still here on this farm waiting. > i can't believe it had to happen this way. >> reporter: and we just got a statement from the stepmother of one of the missing men, mark sturgis. she says the loss of him is so indescribable, his father will spend the rest of his life along with myself to make sure mark gets justice. we're live in sul bury township, "nbc10 news." of the four missing men, dean finocchiaro's remains were the first to be found. today we spoke to a man who worked with the 19-year-old as a local business. their friendship went beyond the workplace. >> kind of had like a big brother, little brother relationship, he and i. and i never had a little brother. it was tough when he was taken from us. >> friends and strangers have also started placing memories on pieces of colored paper outside the business where he worked.

these murders have also stunned the local community. nbc10 went into new hope today where neighbors are shocked this kind of crime could happen where they live. >> just laid back and a lot of shopping and things like that. that's why we came down here. it all seems so tragic and sad. and it can happen anywhere. >> does it surprise you? >> yeah. yeah. this is -- this is a quiet community. >> and despite all the answers we learned today there is a still a lot we don't note about this crime. we posted a full time line on nbc10.com. coming up, keith jones will break that down day by day and show us what's left unanswered. >> your first alert weather, lightning lit up the sky down the shore. this is video from a couple hours ago. our camera captured three flashes of lightning in cape may in a matter of seconds.

you can really hear the rain coming down in montgomery county. it made driving more difficult. a lot of rain, lightning and even tornado warnings earlier this evening >> fortunately the skies started to calm down tonight. more is on the way. the latest from the chief meteorologist tami sue sa. >> it is quieter but not for all of us. you can see out here along the jersey shore, atlantic city starting to clear out. cape may we have activity. the greater philadelphia area is quiet. beat had that tornado warning earlier thatks county into upper montgomery county. let's look what's going down in sussex county. this is a severe thunderstorm warning. so this is just to the south of mill ffrdford and includes georgetown and also louis. lots of lightning associated with this. that severe thunderstorm warning for small hailwis. it goes till about 11:30 tonight. look at the number of lightning strikes.

right inside this box that i drew, we've got 40 lightning strikes going on there. you can see a little bit of shower activity just to the north of cape may, to the south of sea isle city. we'll be quiet across the area for tonight for the most part. tomorrow a whole lot more making its way into the area, and this is something we're watching for tomorrow, those were hail sfreeks that just went by. that and more damaging wind. we'll talk about that when i come back in a few minutes. you'll have to go a little deeper into your bank account to the pay tuition at pennsylvania's 14 universities. the department of higher education approved a 3.5% rate hike translating to about a $250 indegrees for in-state full time students. >> senate republicans face a crucial battle for votes in their own party after coming 0 out with their latest health care bill. this could be the last best chance to get reform passed. in an effort to win over

moderates, the new bill includes $45 million to fight the opioid epidemic, $70 billion to stabilize insurance markets and help lower americans pay for care and keeps some of obamacare's taxes on wealthy americans. >> everybody is looking for an idea that is more republican and does not run into the concept you're taking money from poor people to give it to rich people. >> the new bill does not restore any of the deep medicaid cuts, two gop senators have already said they will not vote for it. there's a new push tonight for federal anti-hazing it legislation comes in the wake of the scandal at penn state university. today, the parents of a student who died in a hazing incident at mercer county's ryder university joined congressman park turk mean in washington to talk about the reach act. gary died from chol alcohol poisoning at a fraternity fernt event ten years ago. the new definition would require colleges and universities to

track incidents. >> parents send their children away 0 college to learn to grow, to learn and grow. not to be hazed and left to die. we're tired of seeing this. something needs to be done. >> in another more recent case, 18 young men are charged in the death of tim piazza inside the beta that i pa pi house at penn state. he died after a night of drinking and several false at a frat party. tonight, we learned how much bill cosby's sexual assault trial cost taxpayers. that number just more than $219,000 according to officials in montgomery county including overtime costs for court employees and the price of bringing the jury to and from pittsburgh for the trial. prosecutors will retry cosby after jury deadlocked in his first trial. a familiar face throwing her hat in the ring for district attorney. lynn abraham turned in her

application today to be as interim d.a. she previously served in that position for 18 years. that position is open after seth williams pleaded guilty in a federal corruption case. the deadline to apply is tomorrow. city judges will vote on the candidate next week. back to our breaking news, that stunning confession after four men go missing in bucks county. a look back at how this murder mystery began and the unanswered questions that authorities hope to answer. final push to get passengers through the airport with fewer delays but it comes at a price. the strict security measure that could be coming to an airport near you. and tracking more storms. that's what we're doing. they're coming across pennsylvania and we have even more on the way for tomorrow. i'll break it down neighborhood by neighborhood right after the break.

murder mystery in bucks county. cosmo dinardo confess to the killing four men who disappeared last week. >> a source with firsthand knowledge of the confession told the "associated press"dy nard doe felt cheated or threatened after selling drugs to some of the victims. investigators are also looking into the possibility thatdy nard doe had help. >> and despite those revelations there is still a lot we don't know about this crime. >> keith jones is here to break down that timeline for us. >> jim, jacqueline, what i'm about to show you is available on nbc10.com. it has been a week. a quiet rural township upside down. a shocking confession after a week of mystery. our time line starts last saturday afternoon. from neighbor susan coleman. >> we heard a series of blasts. they were loud. and i was like what the heck is that. then within like a minute or

two, we heard another series of very disturbing gunshot fires. >> reporter: followed she says by faint yelling and even more loud blasts. by sunday, four bucks men had been reported missing. around 2:00 a.m., mark sturgis's car was discovered two miles from thedy nard doe farm in so bury township. two hours later tom mayo's car was found. crews start digging by monday afternoon. >> trying to find needles in a haystack. >> reporter: and cosmo dinardo was arrested on an unrelated weapons charge. by tuesday -- >> i will say so that mr. dinardo is a person of interest. >> reporter: the 20-year-old's father bailed him out that night. on wednesday, he was arrested again. this time for trying to sell thomas me o's car at midnight. >> we have found human remains in an approximately 12 1/2 foot deep common grave.

the identity of passengers leaving the u.s. a facial recognition kiosk compares the passenger's face with all photos already on file and passports, visas or other sources. the move comes as homeland security tries to keep better track of who is entering the country and who is leaving. >> real problem in immigration today is not so much people coming over the border, but people overstaying their visas. and we don't have a way of tracking that. >> the ultimate hope is to integrate the biometric screening process with the check-in process doing away with paper tickets. >> your first alert weather. >> sweltering heat gave way to storms for much of our area tonight. you can see here not everyone was prepared for the downpours. these girls had to improvise as they walked to their cars. chief meteorologist tammy sousa with more. >> more will be headed our way overnight. we have chains to dry out. some areas picking up very heavy

rain. we had scheffer thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings earlier on. basically that amounted to hail falling. walnut in size hail and trees snapped in berks county. let's take a look where we have activity right now. that's down here in lower delaware. we have a severe thunderstorm warning still in place for georgetown, louis, places like that. that is until 11:30 tonight. that's a storm moving off to the east. again, damaging winds are expected with this storm. that will be the biggest threat along with some of the intense lightning taking place. we have 40 lightning strikes right here in this little box. there has been quite a bit of lightning with these storms. along the jersey shore, they got a good pounding in atlantic city. all those people out for the concert stuck around later tonight and all got soaked. we're watching that move out across the ocean. this is the doppler estimated rainfall totals and they're pretty much spot on. about 3 1/2 inches falling as

you headed up into the northwestern part of berks county. about 1.2 inches. reading picking up 3 inches. 3 inches into parts of months gomry over into bucks county. mart of philadelphia nothing. it was a big track that moved north of the city and another track that moved just south across parts of delaware and into parts of new jersey. now, this is what's moving our way out of pittsburgh. we have more storms headed our way. some of this will filter in in the wee hours of the morning. tomorrow is the last big day we see with a chance of strong storms. allentown, could you see strong o stronger storms. about 2:00 in the afternoon, some storms popping up around philadelphia. we could get another batch of very strong storms. the line of those coming about 4:30 in the afternoon. moving into jersey about 6:00 -- and even another one tomorrow night before we finally clear out and things quiet down across the area for what could be a

pleasant weekend ahead. the doppler wants to put out, this is estimated. this is model estimated doppler totals. it could be up to four inches falling in philadelphia if we get that storm on top of us. somebody may get a storm like that. this is going to move around the area before we see where the final storm track is. 78 in philadelphia. 65 in mount pocono, 75 in atlantic city. tomorrow 83 in fairmont. swanksville 79. easton in the 70s. 81 in egg harbor township and 6 for everybody in dover. don't forget, you can follow us on the nbc10 app. it has live radar. you'll need that for tomorrow especially if the storms move in. tomorrow a high of 3. r on saturday. 90 on sunday. strong storms possible tomorrow. rain returning early next week. guys? >> he's known as doughnut boy and today he lived up to his name. where he was spotted in our area next.

the young man you see in that picture is on a mission to thank police officers across the country. he made a stop at the police department in the lehigh valley today. taylor is better known as doughnut boy. since last year, he's been buying doughnuts for officers everywhere and wears a cape i doe not need a reason toha cop. >> l.a. ram conner barrow visited smith playground in south philadelphia. bar win and his f da transformed this 7 1/2 acre site over the years. the final site includes two baseball fields and a turf football field home to the south philly hurricanes. we'll face off against his old team in december. you don't have to wait that long to get your eagles football fix.
