jared kushner and paul manafort were there. this morning, we find out there's another person in that room. let's start with nbc chief white house correspondent, hallie jackson, in paris. hallie, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, matt. good morning to you. nbc news is not naming this man. but we have learned that some u.s. officials suspect him of having ties to russian intelligence, something he denies. this is the latest twist in a story that has dogged the president in paris, as he now returns home, after being forced to confront this russia-related controversy here in france. this morning, a major revelation in that meeting between donald trump jr. and a russian lawyer during the campaign, aimed at getting dirt on hillary clinton. now, nbc news has learned more about who else was in that room. a russian-american lobbyist, a former soviet counterintelligence officer, suspected by some u.s. officials

of having ongoing ties to russian intelligence. nbc news is not naming that lobbyist, who denies current ties to russian spy agencies. his presence, likely to be of interest to investigators. natalia veselnitskaya was accompanied by someone was denied to identify him. the president, before bastille day celebrations in paris, defended the young man. >> my son is a wonderful young man. he took a meeting with a russian lawyer. not a government lawyer, but a russian lawyer. >> reporter: trump jr. took the meeting with someone explicitly identified as a russian attorney. >> i think from a practical standpoint, most would have taken that meeting. nothing happened from the meeting. zero happened from the meeting. and i think the press made a big deal over something that really a lot of people would do.

>> reporter: the president argues, it's politics as usual. opposition research is. what's not, is when it comes from someone claiming to represent a foreign government anded a stair adversary, at th. the president calls his son, a good boy and a good kid. trump jr., who is 39, is ten days younger than the french president, who stood along president trump, at a paris news conference. seeming to stifle a smile, when his counterpart was asked about his remarks after a terror attack in france. >> paris is so out of control. we don't want to end up like france. >> reporter: now? >> i'm coming back. you better do a good job, please. otherwise, you're going to make we look very bad. >> reporter: as for our new, exclusive reporting this morning, nbc news has reached out to the representatives of those involved in that june 2016 meeting. so far, no comment from any of

them. matt? savannah? back to you. >> hallie, thanks. let's get more on this. nbc news national security analyst jeremy bash joins us. jeremy, good morning to you. now, nbc news is reporting that the russian attorney was accompanied by a russian-american lobbyist who some suspect of having ongoing ties to russian intel sequence. a former soviet intelligence officer. what's the significance of that? big deal? small increases the likelihood this was a russian intelligence operation, aimed at collecting information from the trump campaign at that meeting andflu. this vinindividual, if they ha s historic ties, they may haves pr life. if they have current and ongoing connections to russian intelligence, this is going to be a major lead for investigato.

>> if you're donald trump jr. and you're involved in this meeting and the news of it breaks and you're forced to reveal the e-mail chain that led to that meeting, why don't you always reveal who else was in the room? why are we just finding out about this? >> it's possible that the individuals in that meeting, including paul manafort, who has a long history of working with russians and working with individuals from overseas countries, that he knew lontand soviet intelligence. that would be problematic for them to moment. again, it would show that the trump campaign had knowledge and detailed knowledge. >> but a drip, drip, drip, is not clear who was in the room. >> they had a lot to hide about this meeting. >> jeremy bash, ourexusive. there's mounting pressure for jared kushner, trump's

son-in-law and senior officer, to resign over his participation in it. peter alexander with this piece of the puzzle. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. once hailed by his father-in-law, as a plrodigy, sy they he is full steam ahead. there's a growing chorus of democrats calling for the son-in-law to lose his access to the nation's secrets or simply to be fired. not beside the president in paris. instead, jared kushner and his wife, ivanka trump, were in idaho. this morning, kushner is the focus of renewed questions in the light of revelations that he, paul manafort and donald trump jr. met with a kremlin lawyer. a kushner confidant telling nbc news that kushner has amended that three times. adding 100 foreign contacts, all

of them undisclosed, including the russian ambassador and head of a russian state-owned bank. kushner's lawyer says the form was prematurely entered with errors. the 36-year-old is drawing fire from democrats, calling for his security clearance to be revoked or kushner to be removed. >> any other white house, somebody that had this breach of trust with the american public, likely wouldn't have a job any longer. >> jared kushner should be fired or he should resign. >> reporter: in fact, experts say the president is the only person who can fire him of his son-in-law or trip him of his clearance. the russian questions aren't clearing up. investigators are examining if the trump campaign's digital operations, cooperated with russian operatives spewing bogus news stories about hillary clinton in key swing states. >> the use of data analytics, if

there was cooperation, coordination or collusion, is part of our investigation. >> reporter: this morning, looking to protect their client, arce with direct knowledge tells nbc news, the lawyers for the president, his son and son-in-law, have agreed they and their clients need to be more disciplined when discussing the russia case. newly released exerts of remarks on air force one, whether he was going to invite vladimir putin to the white house. i would say, yeah. i don't think this is the right time. but yes, i would. >> peter alexander, thank you. more news out of washington. the revised senate health care bill is being met with some opposition from key republicans. the bill aims to win conservative support while at the same time, placating hesitant moderates. it's not clear if mitch mcconnell has achieved the

delicate balance he needs. when he unveiled his bill on thursday, he lost two key votes. senator susan collins of maine and rand paul of kentucky. that leaves no room for error in terms of defections and puts the bill in jeopardy. the vote is set for next week. a setback for the travel ban. a federal judge in hawaii has ordered the government not to enforce the ban on close relatives, such as grandparents, who are legally in the country. at issue, is the president's executive order, who restricts entry into the united states for 90 days from 6 muslim nations. the ban includes not grandparents, uncles, aunts, nieces and cousins and people legally in the u.s. we want to go back in the stunning confession of the disappearance of four in pennsylvania. a man being held as a person of interest in that case, has admitted to taking part in their murders. this morning, we're learning

more about him. stephanie gosk has the latest developments. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. cosmo dinardo's attorney says his client admitted to participating in the murders. now, we're learning that police in that city are questioning a second person of interest. the other remaining question is motive. we don't know why these four young men became targets. cosmo dinardo, shackled and escorted into a van thursday, had one message. >> i'm sorry. >> reporter: the 20-year-old is talking todetectives, after confessing to taking part in killing these four young men. >> he admitted to being part of or actually committing the murder. ? all four? >> yes. and he gave the location for all four. >> reporter: in exchange for his testimony, prosecutors agreed not to pursue the death penalty. >> cosmo was spared life in terms of giving all of his

relevant information that he possibly could. >> reporter: forensics teams have been painstakingly removing remains. dean finocchiaro is the only one identified. the disappearance of the four men triggered a massive manhunt in pennsylvania. the investigation focused on a prowling multimillion-dollar estate, owned by dinardo's parents. law enforcement brought in police recruits to comb the property. now that the search nearly over, families of the victims are trying to makece sense of what happened. mark sturgis' mother said, the loss of him is indescribable. the grandparents of jimi patrick, say he was an athlete. an excellent pitcher and hitter. he was awarded academic recognition after his first year at loyola. his college friends are shaken.

>> there's no explanation to what happened to this kid. >> reporter: the confession does not mean that this investigation is over. police are still on the scene. this jittery community has witnessed a terrible crime. they are, no doubt, hoping to get more answers. back to you guys. >> stephanie, thank you very much. breaking overnight. two israeli police officers were killed in a shoot-out into jerusalem's holiest site. arabs armed with guns and knives opened fire at the temple mount. the three attackers were shot and killed by officers who pursued them through the streets. police evacuated the compound following the attack. disturbing information on a really close call at san francisco international airport. we told you about this earlier this week. investigators say the air canada plane that nearly landed on a

ta taxiway, came within 100 feet of plowing into a line of other planes filled with passengers. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. good morning. >> reporter: we could be uk tag about hundreds of people dead, had another pilot on the ground not raised the alarm of getting the attention of the sole air traffic controller in the tower. the plane was just 100 feet, the distance between the bases on a baseball field. this morning, pilots and aviation experts say they're baffled how an air canada pilot came so close to disaster, while radioing a plane on the ground. >> where is this guy going? he's on the taxiway. >> reporter: air canada flight 759 was arriving from toronto last friday. runway 28l had been closed for weeks. but the pilot seemed confused on final approach. >> we see some lights on the

runway there. can you confirm left? >> clear to land 28 right but you. >> reporter: the lights were the other planes lined up to the right, fully loaded with fuel and passengers. canadian authorities say the air canada crew flew a quarter of a mile over the top of the taxi way, coming just 100 feet over the first two planes and pulled up over the top of more. >> air canada flew directly over us. >> i saw that, guys. >> if this accident was not averted, i cannot imagine the extent of the mayhem. perhaps the worst aviation accident in history. >> reporter: how did the air canada crew make a basic and deadly mistake? >> they have instrumentation that tells them if they're lined up with the runway. why they didn't use that instrumentation as a backup is going to be a question for investigators. >> reporter: there was only one controller in the tower handling

arrivals and departures at the time. the other was on a break. the sole controller was distracted talking to another facility. investigators from canada, ntsb and air canada will be reviewing this case. so far, the ntsb has not released an update. >> thank goodness for the pilot on the ground that sounded the alarm. we want to go to the video that we showed you at the top of the show. an elephant stranded nine miles out to sea and rescued by the sri lankan navy. they were able to tow the animal back to land. they used ropes. that rescue operation took about 12 hours. a sri lankan navy spokesperson said, the elephant probably got caught in a riptide and was swept out to sea. here's another fact i didn't know. experts say elephants are some of the best swimmers of any land

from jet planes. now, a woman has died doing that very thing. tommy leitner is there for us this morning. >> reporter: it's an easy flight from st. maarten. but a family who traveled to the it for fun is grieving after a dangerous stunt went terribly wrong. this morning, an urgent warning about this popular tourist attraction on the caribbean island of st. maarten. it's called jet blasting. thri thrill-seekers clinging to the fence outside of the airport, testing their strength and nerve against the blast of departing planes. those blasts reaching up to 120 miles per hour, the same speed as a category 3 hurricane. but it can be deadly. on wednesday, an unidentified woman from new zealand, unable to hold on, died from the powerful jet blast. this video from 2012

talk to her. a busy morning. let's get to your news at 8:00. the nbc news exclusive. we learned that a second person with ties to russia attended that controversial meeting with a russian lawyer and members of the trump campaign. kristen welker has more from paris, where president trump atended a national celebration this morning. kristen, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump was aiming to shift the narrative away from the russia controversy here in paris. but this morning, it's only deepening. and now, the new twist involving the president's eldest son will undoubtedly be looked at by investigators back in d.c. this morning, another major development about that meeting between donald trump jr. and a kremlin-linked attorney. nbc news has learned exclusively there was someone else in the room. that person, a russian-born american lobbyist and former soviet counterintelligence

officer, with having ties to russian lobbyists. the presence of an russian-american with an intelligence background is likely to be of interest to investigators. the revelation comes as the president wraps up a visit to paris, france, filled with pomp and pageantry, culminating in the bastille day parade this morning. the president hoping that these would help turn the page on the russia controversy. but at their joint press conference, trump jr.'s meeting was front and center. the president saying nothing came from the encounter, which he called opposition research. >> i think the press made a big deal over something that really a lot of people would do. i had many people call up, oh, gee, we have information on this factor or this person or, frankly, hillary.

that's very standard in politics. politics is not the nicest business in the world. >> reporter: obtaining opposition research is common. but it's unusual for u.s. campaign officials to meet with people claiming to represent foreign governments offering negative information about opponents. with the city of lights dimmed by the cloud of scrutiny, the president found a silver lining. >> the friendship between our two nations and ourselves, i might add, is unbreakable. >> reporter: despite clashing over everything from trade to the environment, mr. trump discussing the paris climate agreement, after he infuriated president macron by pulling out. >> something could happen with respect to the paris accord. we'll see what happens. >> reporter: another off-the-cuff comments to france's first lady making headlines. >> you're in good shape. beautiful. >> reporter: this morning, an attorney representing donald trump jr. is responding to nbc's exclusive report saying that

trump jr. thought that additional person in the room was merely a friend of the intermediary who set up the meeting. the attorney saying he spoke to the person directly and, quote, he is a u.s. citizen. he told me specifically, he is not working for the russian government. nbc reached out to representatives of the other people in the room, paul manafort and jared kushner, no response yet. president trump is on his way to his resort in bed minister, where he will spend the weekend. >> kristen welker, thank you very much. a confession in the murder of four young men in pennsylvania has left questions this morning. cosmo dinardo has admitted to taking part in or actually committing those murders. he said the confession was part of a deal to avoid the death penalty. the disappearance of the four victims last week triggered a huge search that ended at a multimillion-d estate owned
