jared kushner and paul manafort were there. this morning, we find out there's another person in that room. let's start with nbc chief white house correspondent, hallie jackson, in paris. hallie, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, matt. good morning to you. nbc news is not naming this man. but we have learned that some u.s. officials suspect him of having ties to russian intelligence, something he denies. this is the latest twist in a story that has dogged the president in paris, as he now returns home, after being forced to confront this russia-related controversy here in france. this morning, a major revelation in that meeting between donald trump jr. and a russian lawyer during the campaign, aimed at getting dirt on hillary clinton. now, nbc news has learned more about who else was in that room. a russian-american lobbyist, a former soviet counterintelligence officer, suspected by some u.s. officials

of having ongoing ties to russian intelligence. nbc news is not naming that lobbyist, who denies current ties to russian spy agencies. his presence, likely to be of interest to investigators. natalia veselnitskaya was accompanied by someone was denied to identify him. the president, before bastille day celebrations in paris, defended the young man. >> my son is a wonderful young man. he took a meeting with a russian lawyer. not a government lawyer, but a russian lawyer. >> reporter: trump jr. took the meeting with someone explicitly identified as a russian attorney. >> i think from a practical standpoint, most would have taken that meeting. nothing happened from the meeting. zero happened from the meeting. and i think the press made a big deal over something that really a lot of people would do.

of them undisclosed, including the russian ambassador and head of a russian state-owned bank. kushner's lawyer says the form was prematurely entered with errors. the 36-year-old is drawing fire from democrats, calling for his security clearance to be revoked or kushner to be removed. >> any other white house, somebody that had this breach of trust with the american public, likely wouldn't have a job any longer. >> jared kushner should be fired or he should resign. >> reporter: in fact, experts say the president is the only person who can fire him of his son-in-law or trip him of his clearance. the russian questions aren't clearing up. investigators are examining if the trump campaign's digital operations, cooperated with russian operatives spewing bogus news stories about hillary clinton in key swing states. >> the use of data analytics, if

delicate balance he needs. when he unveiled his bill on thursday, he lost two key votes. senator susan collins of maine and rand paul of kentucky. that leaves no room for error in terms of defections and puts the bill in jeopardy. the vote is set for next week. a setback for the travel ban. a federal judge in hawaii has ordered the government not to enforce the ban on close relatives, such as grandparents, who are legally in the country. at issue, is the president's executive order, who restricts entry into the united states for 90 days from 6 muslim nations. the ban includes not grandparents, uncles, aunts, nieces and cousins and people legally in the u.s. we want to go back in the stunning confession of the disappearance of four in pennsylvania. a man being held as a person of interest in that case, has admitted to taking part in their murders. this morning, we're learning

more about him. stephanie gosk has the latest developments. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. cosmo dinardo's attorney says his client admitted to participating in the murders. now, we're learning that police in that city are questioning a second person of interest. the other remaining question is motive. we don't know why these four young men became targets. cosmo dinardo, shackled and escorted into a van thursday, had one message. >> i'm sorry. >> reporter: the 20-year-old is talking todetectives, after confessing to taking part in killing these four young men. >> he admitted to being part of or actually committing the murder. ? all four? >> yes. and he gave the location for all four. >> reporter: in exchange for his testimony, prosecutors agreed not to pursue the death penalty. >> cosmo was spared life in terms of giving all of his

relevant information that he possibly could. >> reporter: forensics teams have been painstakingly removing remains. dean finocchiaro is the only one identified. the disappearance of the four men triggered a massive manhunt in pennsylvania. the investigation focused on a prowling multimillion-dollar estate, owned by dinardo's parents. law enforcement brought in police recruits to comb the property. now that the search nearly over, families of the victims are trying to makece sense of what happened. mark sturgis' mother said, the loss of him is indescribable. the grandparents of jimi patrick, say he was an athlete. an excellent pitcher and hitter. he was awarded academic recognition after his first year at loyola. his college friends are shaken.

ta taxiway, came within 100 feet of plowing into a line of other planes filled with passengers. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. good morning. >> reporter: we could be uk tag about hundreds of people dead, had another pilot on the ground not raised the alarm of getting the attention of the sole air traffic controller in the tower. the plane was just 100 feet, the distance between the bases on a baseball field. this morning, pilots and aviation experts say they're baffled how an air canada pilot came so close to disaster, while radioing a plane on the ground. >> where is this guy going? he's on the taxiway. >> reporter: air canada flight 759 was arriving from toronto last friday. runway 28l had been closed for weeks. but the pilot seemed confused on final approach. >> we see some lights on the

runway there. can you confirm left? >> clear to land 28 right but you. >> reporter: the lights were the other planes lined up to the right, fully loaded with fuel and passengers. canadian authorities say the air canada crew flew a quarter of a mile over the top of the taxi way, coming just 100 feet over the first two planes and pulled up over the top of more. >> air canada flew directly over us. >> i saw that, guys. >> if this accident was not averted, i cannot imagine the extent of the mayhem. perhaps the worst aviation accident in history. >> reporter: how did the air canada crew make a basic and deadly mistake? >> they have instrumentation that tells them if they're lined up with the runway. why they didn't use that instrumentation as a backup is going to be a question for investigators. >> reporter: there was only one controller in the tower handling

arrivals and departures at the time. the other was on a break. the sole controller was distracted talking to another facility. investigators from canada, ntsb and air canada will be reviewing this case. so far, the ntsb has not released an update. >> thank goodness for the pilot on the ground that sounded the alarm. we want to go to the video that we showed you at the top of the show. an elephant stranded nine miles out to sea and rescued by the sri lankan navy. they were able to tow the animal back to land. they used ropes. that rescue operation took about 12 hours. a sri lankan navy spokesperson said, the elephant probably got caught in a riptide and was swept out to sea. here's another fact i didn't know. experts say elephants are some of the best swimmers of any land

from jet planes. now, a woman has died doing that very thing. tommy leitner is there for us this morning. >> reporter: it's an easy flight from st. maarten. but a family who traveled to the it for fun is grieving after a dangerous stunt went terribly wrong. this morning, an urgent warning about this popular tourist attraction on the caribbean island of st. maarten. it's called jet blasting. thri thrill-seekers clinging to the fence outside of the airport, testing their strength and nerve against the blast of departing planes. those blasts reaching up to 120 miles per hour, the same speed as a category 3 hurricane. but it can be deadly. on wednesday, an unidentified woman from new zealand, unable to hold on, died from the powerful jet blast. this video from 2012

and i told a few people in the industry. and a lot of them said, what do you expect? you went out for a coffee meeting with a guy whoed ed had he had interest in your company. of course these things are going to happen. like, yeah. that happens. >> reporter: suck it up. is it the truth, it's not just the investor, not just this guy. you have to worry about this guy, then, ruining your reputation because you refused to sleep with him. >> there's no binary choice. do i take the money and do this thing? or do i walk away unscathed? you're making a choice at this point, in your case, or many of the cases, you are jeopardizini yourself, where he can say what he wants about you. >> reporter: you have to be clever about it. you have to find a clever situation without alienated this guy. >> you have to be polite. you can walk away. you can do it in a dramatic fashion. but you're definitely putting your business at risk.
