worked close to john mccain over the years. >> that's breaking news overnight john mccain, arizona republican, one of those powerful and vocal lawmakers on capitol hill diagnosed with brain cancer. we've got full coverage. we'll start with nbc national correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> hey, savannah, good morning to you. that news met with stunned disbelief among colleagues, already dividing democrats and representatives in support of the senator. his office said he's in good spirits but appreciates the outpouring of support. his doctors say underlying health is excellent. he's one of america's bravest fighters. this morning senator john mccain may be facing his toughest battle yet. on capitol hill political partner and close friend lindsey graham emotional. >> this disease has never had any more worthy opponent. >> the 80-year-old mccain diagnosed with a brain tumor after doctors removed a blood clot above his left eye fry.

overnight an outpouring of support from both sides of the aisle. president trump offering his thoughts and prayers. president obama, mccain's 2008 rival tweeting, cancer doesn't know what it's up again. give it hell, john. while mccain recovering in arizona, the mayo clinic says he and his family are including treatment options which may include chemotherapy. they have diagnosed glioblastoma but he's pete cancer before, overcoming them. she posted this calling "her"o. an emotional letter reads, "it won't surprise you to learn that in all of this, the one that is the most confidence and calm is my father. cancer may affleck him in many ways but it will not make him surrender. nothing ever has. mccain, a former navy pilot survived 5 1/2 years as a

prisoner in vietnam. surviving three decades in service including two presidential runs. >> haven't changed. no, never a problem. of course not. i always like to move forward with legislation i haven't seen. >> never afraid to disagree with his own party, mccain's maverick reputation more present in recent weeks during health care debate. last week his health issues prompting leaders to delay the vote to repeal and replace obamacare um after mccain returned to washington. president trump sending his well wishes earlier this week. >> we hope john mccain gets better very soon because we miss him. he's a crusty voice in washington, plus we need his vote. >> the man known for clark with colleagues in both parties. this morning bringing the opposing sides together. senator mccain's office said he'll decide when to return when he consults with his doctors.

it was his friend lindsey graham who broke the news to colleagues. he spoke for five minutes largely about the diagnoses before the conversation turned to other issues like health care reform. mccain's message to the other senators, get back to work. peter, savannah. >> thank you very much. let's bring in medical correspondent dr. john torres. good to see you this morning. glioblastoma. we heard terms like aggressive and malignant. i know you're not treating senator mccain but generally speaking what kind of prognosis do you expect. >> unfortunately not that good. once diagnosed, live 14 months, five year survival rate around 10%, not very good either. one thing about this tumor, brain cancer, very aggressive, malignant and a survival rate. >> mayo clinic's statement said they believed they had gotten the tumor. it sounded like they had gotten most of it. >> if you look closely at the

statement they said they got the tumor they could see. there's parts they can't say, microscopic parts, if those are left behind, which unfortunately they are, they are hard to get, they start growing. it's an aggressive tumor,ette comes back, very hard to treat. >> senator mccain a history of melanoma. could there be connection between melanoma and glioblastoma. >> there are some thoughts they are connected. more likely two types of cancer especially for somebody at his age who had cancer before. >> what kind of treatments are there. he said the plan is to fighting it as aggressively as possible. >> he went through stage one, which is the surgery to remove as much as you can. the next part is radiation and chemotherapy on top of that. the problem is radiation and chemotherapy could take a toll on his health. he is 80 years old. there might be radiation, chemo, it just depends. >> going back and looking at the

james comey hearing where he asked a question that was meandering and confused. later he said i'm sorry, i was up watching diamondback game. from what you've seen, could there be a connection? >> it's in the frontal lobe. that part is decision making, could come into play. doctors look for confusion, headaches, weakness, those kinds of things. that is what clues him in to get a cat scan and shows something is going on. i think that's probably what happened in this case. >> add our well wishes to senator mccain and his family. thank you so much. >> thank you, dr. a lot more to get to including explosive new enter vow with the president. commander in chief sounding off on a wide range of issues and lashing out against his own attorney general. nbc correspondent kristen welker with more on that. kristen, good morning. >> good morning to you. the president's interview with "new york times" touches on a number of topics. everything from foreign to domestic policy. but the biggest bombshell is that he takes aim at his own

attorney general jeff sessions. overnight president trump speaking out against one of his earliest supporters. in an interview with "new york times," the president said he never would have appointed jeff sessions attorney general if he knew he would recuse himself from the russia investigation. the "times" releasing edited audio excerpts of the conversati conversation. >> so jeff sessions takes the job, gets into the job, recuses himself. i then have -- which frankly, i think it's very unfair to the president. how do you take a job and then recuse your self. if he would have recused your self before the job, i would say, thanks, but i'm not going to take you. >> on james comey the president accusing the fired fbi director of trying to leverage a dossier of damaging information to keep his job. mr. trump also warning special counsel robert mueller he'll cross a red line if he tries to

delve into trump finances related to russia. >> would that be a breach of what his actual charge is? >> i would say. i don't -- i mean, it's possible there's a condo or something, so, you know, i sell a lot of condo units and somebody from russia buys a condo, who knows? i don't make money from russia. >> the unfiltered comment ahead of a triple header on capitol hill next week. first the president's son-in-law jared kushner to be interviewed monday behind closed doors by senate intelligence committee staff members. on wednesday donald trump jr.'s and paul manafort's turn, invited to testify before a separate senate committee. no word yet whether they will appear, but leading senators are threatening to subpoena the men if they don't volunteer to attend. all three attending that highly scrutinized meeting last summer with a russian lawyer with a promise of dirt about hillary clinton. at the capital overnight, senate republicans huddling in last ditch effort to revise their bed to overhaul obamacare.

out west. it will take place in two locations. >> the nevada board of parole commissioners will convene in carson city. simpson will appear by video conference from the medium security prison he's currently serving up to 30 year sentencing for kidnapping and armed robbery in las vegas. >> nbc news will broadcast the hege live and we know that a decision will be announced today. >> so let's get right to nbc's j joe fryer standing by. good morning to you. >> savannah, willie, good morning. o.j. simpson is hours away from learning his future. will he walk out of prison in october or will he stay behind bars longer. it's the latest high-profile chapter in a life that has captivated the public for decad decades. it's being called the parole hearing of the century. last about 15 minutes. they plan to hearing from o.j. simpson, one of his friends or relatives and one of the robbery victims who plans to tell the

board that simpson should be released. the four commissioners will then deliberate privately for 20 minutes before voting publicly. if they don't reach a unanimous verdict, they will immediately contact two additional commissioners. to win his release simpson needs at least four to vote yes which many legal observers say is likely. >> during his last hearing in 2013 simpson expressed regret for the armed robbery in a vegas hotel that landed him behind bars. >> make no mistake, i would give it all back to these guys. they could have it all to get these last five years back. they have been somewhat iilluminating at times and painful a lot of times. >> if parole is granted, officials say simpson could be released as early as october 1st, entering a whole new world of exposure. while behind bars he remained constant fodder for tabloids. >> absolutely 100% not guilty. >> plus he was the topic of wildly popular fx series the

people versus o.j. simpson and documentary, "o.j.: made in america," both of which introduced simpson's story to a new generation. in the age of smart cameras and social media, it would be harder for the former football star to stay out of the public eye. first today he must win his release, one of america's most infamous inmates grabbing the world's attention one more time. >> for the parole porboard, one the key factors, a risk assessment. he was deemed a low risk and was granted parole on some of the charges. if parole is rejected today, state officials say another hearing will likely take place anywhere from one to three years from now. willie and savannah. >> all right, joe. going to be a long day there in lovelock correctional facility. in next half hour we're going to talk to chris darden, prosecutor in simpson's double murder trial. what does he think about the idea of simpson walking free. we'll ask him. special live coverage on many of

or being raped. she called out help. she called back eight minutes to make sure police were on the way. shortly after she was shot by one of the responding police officers, mohamed noor as she approached their squad car. this according to their partner who also told investigators they were startled by a loud noise. his attorney said it's reasonable to assume any police officer would be concerned about a possible ambush under these circumstances. >> a horrible tragedy. >> from minnesota's governor to prime minister of australia where she was from, lawmakers have been seeking answers. >> how can a woman out in the street in her pajamas seeking assistance from the police be shot like that. >> mohamed noor, the officer had opened fire, still has not agreed to be interviewed by investigators, a smart move according to one of minnesota's top criminal defense attorneys. >> why would you advise your client not to speak. >> i jokingly say i have six

three small children. a funeral for all of those victims is scheduled for next week. a raging wildfire that forced thousands of california residents from their homes has nearly doubled now in size. the dettwyler fire southwest of yosemite national park is now almost 46,000 acres in size. flames are threatening about 1500 homes and buildings. eight structures have already been destroyed. firefighters facing hot and dry conditions with temperatures in the 90s. >> the fire there. al, you've been talking all week about this ring of fire. so much oppressive heat in this country now. >> it's going to continue, unfortunately, guys. we are looking at this big area of high pressure. it is hot and humid throughout two-thirds of the u.s. 71 million people under heat advisories or heat warnings midwest from texas all the way into the northeast. look at these temperatures today. the heat index will feel like 108 in st. louis, 99 cincinnati, tallahassee 99, raleigh 100, 101

we're back at 7:30 thursday morning 20th of july, 2017. good morning to everyone. we've got willie in for matt. hoda is here. we have such a busy news morning. a lot of different topics. we begin with sad news about arizona senator john mccain. he has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. this follows the surgery to remove a blood clot above his left eye. in a statement from his office, mccain and his family say they are now reviewing treatment options including a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. >> president trump is taking his own attorney general to task in an interview at the "new york times." the president said he never would have offered jeff sessions the job of attorney general if he knew sessions would step away

and recuse himself from the russia investigation. >> how do you take a job and recuse himself. if he would have recused himself before the job i would say, thanks, jeff but i'm not going to take you. >> also sharp words for special counsel robert mueller warning him about looking into any trump family finances unrelated to that investigation. and take a look at this frightening scene in nepal. a 14-year-old girl crossing the roadway. she suddenly disappears, falls into the drain. a woman recorded the incident. you can hear her screaming from a nearby building. good news, minutes later the girl emerges from an underground sewer 30 yards away. a bystander is there to pluck her out of that rushing water. amazingly that story, she's okay. they ordered all the drains be covered. that is a miracle right there. >> we mentioned a busy news day. one of the big headlines, o.j. stimps's closely watched parole

hear a few hours away. he's 70 years old and served nine years for an armed robbery in las vegas. he's asking for officials to release him in october. chris darden served as one of the prosecutors during simpson's double murder trial in 1995. he wrote a book about that experience called "in contempt." chris, good morning, good to see you again. >> good morning. >> okay. back in the headlines. >> yeah. >> put your lawyer hat on. do you think he will be granted parole. then take your lawyer hat off, how does that sit with you? >> i imagine he will be granted parole unfortunately. you know, what can we say. he's not in jail for murder. he's in jail for robbery. it's an amazing thing that you can get a 33 year sentence and only do nine years. that's just incredible to me. you do 25, 22% of your sentence and the state of nevada releases you. >> you think about him walking around as a free mine, how does

that hit you? >> i like the picture of o.j. enhandcuffs more than i like the picture of o.j. with a golf club in his hand. i think he has a lot to account for. we have yet to extract from him the punishment that he deserves. >> on a professional level, chris, this parole board should not take into account what happened 22 years ago in los angeles and his acquittal in the murder trial and everything they heard around that trial. do you think on a human level they will be able to discount that and focus on what happened in nevada? >> i think it will be difficult for them. the board, i'm sure these are people who believe in law, justice. justice ain't killing two people, butchering two people and getting away with it. but the murders in l.a. are slightly relevant because o.j. simpson is robbing people of property that really doesn't belong to him. he claims it belongs to them but it actually belongs to the goldmans. >> do you think o.j. siches is capable of rehabilitation. he says he's changed, different,

do you think that's possible when it comes to o.j.? >> i think you really want to see the real o.j., you look back at the video of o.j. leaving that hotel that night after robbing these people, lining people up against the wall while a guy behind him stand there with a pistol pointed at him. lou at his demeanor, he's happy, jovial. that's how he really feels about this robbery. today he says i wish i could take it back. sure he does. he got caught and got nine years. >> they do say he's a model prisoner. would you agree with that? >> the fact he's a model prisoner doesn't mean he's a model citizen. doesn't mean he's not a danger to the public. >> i don't know if you saw excerpts to his hearing a few years ago. he talked about what he learned in prison and some of the things he's learned. when you watched that, do you think this is a man who has been humbled or chasened or changed? >> no, i thought he was the same guy i met in 1994, '95, a

manipulative person, narcissist. he's saying what he needs to say and doing what he needs to do to get out of prison. i heard he leads a bible study class or something to that effect. that's not the o.j. simpson i know. >> do you believe chris, i'll just ask you bluntly, that o.j. simpson is a danger to the public if he's out walking the streets? >> i don't know. one of the things the parole board will have to review are his psychiatric records. i'm assuming that he's receiving psychiatric treatment, some therapy of some kind. i would think if you receive therapy or psychiatric help, they should have addressed the issue of the murder. >> if you were on the parole board, what's the one question you'd want to ask o.j. >> did you kill ron and nicole. >> that's not legally relevant. >> that's the one question everybody would like to ask. i think everybody ought to call up the nevada parole board and say, hey, ask him. if you're really rehabilitated, remorseful, really a born again

christian, let's move this discussion forward. admit your sin. >> you've been so candid and we've had the pleasure of talking to you before about the impact of this trial and this case. you and i even joked about it this morning. it never goes away, always comes back. how is it for you to be sitting here today and be reliving all of this? >> it's amazing, you know. it all started last summer with the television series on fx. then someone wins oscars, people win emmys, we reintroduced this to a whole new generation of people and it goes on and on. now we have the parole hearing of the century. it's incredible this thing is streamed all over the world for people to watch. >> last time you were here, you said you wish you had never been part of it, never walked into the courtroom. >> never, ever. i still feel that way. >> chris darden, good to get your perspective. you know a lot about this case. thank you very much. we should mention, by the way,

nation. hallie, thank you very much. more than two decades after he was acquitted of murder and nine years after armed robbery and kidnapping o.j. simpson's fate could come down to a few minutes today. at a correctional facility in nevada where simpson will seek release. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in a matter of hours o.j. simpson will learn his future during a parole hearing. he'll be here at lovelock hearing. he'll be at a video conference a few hours away in carson city. this is expected to last about 15 minutes. during the time they can pepper simpson with questions. one friend or relative could speak on simpson's behalf. we heard one of the victims in this robbery case says he plans to testify and tells the parole board he thinks simpson should be released. the parole board will deliberate privately before coming back out and voting publicly. simpson now 70 years old and

in fact, we had been talking prior to that for the two years before that about me becoming sort of a creative producer with them, working alongside the two executives who i spoke to where i would have been really a part of the day to day decision making on the muppets. i was thrilled about that. i felt like at last, after 12 years with disney, we would be able to integrate the great pact of the muppets which is what i wanted to do. >> let's go to allegations between the muppet studio and the henson family that you were bitter, angry depressed victim, you did kermit that way and you were difficult to work with. that begs the question why did they keep you around for 27 years. >> nobody likes these sharp cornered adjectives thrown at them. as i said, we were in talks to move this ahead just prior to the conversation, within three days before we had a conference call to talk about all the work we were going to be doing going

forward. you better get plenty of rest because you're going to be worked really hard. so it was a huge shock. in terms of the character stuff, kermit becoming stale or bitter, it isn't true in my mind. but the funny part of that is, i would expect the people saying that to have been my staunchest allies. >> were you personally difficult to work with? that's really the criticism. you offered notes and were hard to work with, quite frankly. >> i offered notes. i don't think that makes someone difficult. it was totally an idea of trying to do what was best for the muppets in terms of receiving material and ideas and concepts that were well out of the bounds of the character. >> cheryl pointed out that you are not kermit. you are simply somebody who plays the role of kermit. >> yeah. it's really interesting about that. in my mind, my mentoring with jim tells me that the minute the muppets are reduced to being roles that are auditioned for and cast, it takes all the

individuality out of them. their longevity is completely based on their consistency, and that is just super important. otherwise it's not kermit or any of the muppets at all. that's what i've tried to push for and be outspoken about. >> the implication that in some sense you had them over the barrel. you were saying, hey, i'm kermit. good luck, you can't get rid of me. >> that's an arrogance that's not in my body. that's just not the case. i don't make those decisions and i certainly never felt that way. >> you're just speaking out now. this happened nine months ago. >> yeah. >> were you hoping, frankly, maybe i can work this out and get this job back. >> i still would like that. i don't think it's going to happen now. yeah, i was hoping that. in the meantime, they were saying, you know, we're not ever going to have you back again. we refuse to offer you a chance to remedy this, which is the worst part. i could do whatever they needed. they were also offering me things that i called consolation prizes. they were going to honor me, give me disney legends awards,
