that air already because of the heat and humidity is worse because of the thick smoke. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> and i'm jim rosenfield. we extended the first alert through the weekend. lots of people escaping to the shore. everyone is sweating it out. extra water breaks on the mail carrier routes in new jersey. sweltering on the course in wilmingt wilmington. the kids refusing to leave the sprinklers. >> and water parks are busy tonight as well with people swimming and sliding their way to try to cool off. this is a live look at the water park. fans will be sweating in the stand at citizens bank park. a live look at first pitch in an hour. >> we're bringing you live team coverage tracking every angle of this dangerous heat ted greenberg is keeping up with

that forest fire and all the smoke in south jersey. >> it will be hot and muggy all weekend long. >> it's going to be uncomfortable all weekend long. it's goirng to roll on and we're facing the threat of severe storms. we're all include in this. feels like in the mid-90 stz for much of the area. so we're still going to be in our heat wave. it will be the fifth day tomorrow of the heat wave. we are going to see storm this is weekend. we have a risk of severe weather. the second half of saturday. watching for the heat exhaustion and heatstroke. damaging hail, wind and lightning. i'll be in a few minutes to talk about all this and break down the timing of these storms.

>> the largest wild fire of the year is burning thousands of  acres tonight and the dangerous heat and humidity are making that fight even harder for fire crews. the smoke has spread from the state forest in burlington county to three other counties and reaching to the beaches a at the jersey shore. we're covering this fire from the air and the ground tonight. ted greenberg slooif in washington township. let's begin with mitch blocker. you can see the white smoke that used to be a wall of thick black smoke. but now as you look through the clouds, you can see the trees beneath them. when we got on the scene, it locks like a 7,000-foot ceiling for where these clouds are. that's about half that according to the radar equipment.

for more on how this is affecting those on the ground, let's go to ted greenberg. >> reporter: we are on the ground at the command post in washington township burlington county. this is closed right now because of the smoke and falling ash. we're about three miles away from the perimeter of that fire. if you're drive iing to the jer shore this evening or tomorrow, there's a chance you'll run into that smoke. many already have. the garden state this year sending flames leaping into the air. plumes of smoke reaches the beaches at the shore. this is a strong burning smell. >> smoke from the raging blaze in a remote section in burling county blowing into atlantic, cape may and ocean counties cutting down on visibility.

>> it's kind of scary. >> keeping her nose and mouth covered today. >> i have asthma so it makes it it hard to be out. health experts with heart issues to stay inside. then if. you still smell the smoke, you really need to seriously consider going to a friend or a loved one's house. >> the blaze is not threatening any homes or businesses, but firefighters working to contain the flames are being hampered by sweltering conditions. >> we were trying to rotate the crews in and out and also hydrate with water. >> investigators working to

>> i'm grateful for his work and wish him continued success as he moves on to pursue new communities. look at his great television ratings. >> she will take over as press secretary. he made several comments that caused some controversy. in april spicer said that even someone as depickable as hitler didn't use chemical weapons. that's despite hitler's well documented use of gas chambers. in march he was criticized for telling a white house reporter to, quote, stop shaking her head. in january spicer attacked reporters for accurate reporting on the size of crowd at president trump's inauguration. spicer claimed the crowd was largest in history even though official photos showed much larger crowds at both of president obama's inaugurations. >> this was the largest audience to witness ab inauguration period, both in person and

mayor today, i gathered the city is not planning to change its policy. >> no, no waivering from him on that. but the attorney general is not backing down either. today he spoke with members of the u.s. attorneys. they make cities like philadelphia. the chanting in old city was the trump administration and. top law enforcements. jeff sessions. >> he must go. ask emotions here because e want the wants the city to change its policy on undocumented immigrants. >> they are not allowed to come without permission. that's an unlawful entry. >> in philadelphia officials won't hold undocumented immigrants for i.c.e. without a

warrant. >> every sanctuary city to reconsider the harm they are doing to their residents by refusing to walk right to be just as devastating with the movement of philadelphia. >> he's twok say what he likes. we have morals on our side. we have the law on our side. >> reporter: sessions is using cases of crime by undocumented immigrants as fear mongering but believe the policy makes the city safer building trust in police. philadelphia's police commissioner was right up fror front for the speech. >> we don't believe that there's a major issue here with illegal immigrants causing violent crime like the attorney general is talking about. >> reporter: he doesn't embrace the sanctuary city label calling it a welcoming city. >> now the police commissioner is worried about the attorney

all new at 6:00, we're taking you inside the deal making used to coax a confession in the killing spree. >> investigators found the bodies of the three of the four missing men at the township farm. they needed the accused killer to tell them where they found the last missing victim. that required help from the victim's families. >> deanna durante sits down with the bucks county district attorney for exclusive insight into the delicate deal making. >> the district attorney says there's still a lot he can't talk about in this case because the investigation is ongoing and he says there's still could be a trial for one or both defendants. he talks about the plea deal he made in order to spare the death penalty for one of the accused killers and what it was like convincing the family to accept that deal. >> i don't believe in coincidence. >> four missing men all from different areas. police right away found common connection leading him to this farm. the search for the missing and

same deal if he had the opportunity to do it all over again. tonight at 11:00, he asked the d.a. about breaking the news to those four families when this went from a missing person's case to a murder case at 11:00. >> to this now, bucks county watch this is man uses two babies to steal sunglasses. inside their carriers. police say he stole about a thousand dollars wort of sunglasses. >> back now to the dangerous heat, it is steamy in center city it you're heading out to grab dinner or drinks. a a live look on broad street from our campus camera and the beach. that's the perfect spot to be in the heat this weekend. that's ocean city, new jersey. it's not just the heat we're dealing with right now as a threat. >> tammie souza is tracking storms for the weekend too. >> it's going to be a busy weekend out there too. you're going to get some storms rolling through.

right now, the temperatures still sweltering in philadelphia. it feels like 96. we'll be in the 90s through the weekend. it looks like it will possibly be a 5 or 6 day heat wave. 86 right now. let's take a lock at the feels like. it feels like 96 in philadelphia. 92 in coatesville. 98 at atlantic city. dover is suspicious. the areas of yellow of the three shades a highest risk level. it's a slight risk of severe weather. it covers the entire area. you can sigh see where it is. it falls on the middle of the threat defcon right here. what does that mean? it means that if we see severe storms, they will be short lived. not widespread. nonetheless, we could see an

isolated tornado pop up any time with the severe storm that's possible. but more likely we'll see scattered wind damage and hail. that's what we'll be. focusing on along with some very intense lightning. let's take a look at the radar. you saw the sea breeze pushing in. it was enough from that sea breeze to generate some showers right here moving through ship bottom. and we are watching what's going on. it's about ready to go away. with the big forest fire, coming out of the northern plains, let's break down what's going to happen for you. we are going to be looking at things pretty quiet tonight into tomorrow morning. we could see our first shower or storm crossing the area about 7:30. maybe this is south jersey. we'll get periodic showers and storms across the area.

we'll hit the low 90s. it's tomorrow night and into sunday morning we could see the best chance of the strongest storms and that will be out of here by some time early on sunday. with just some scattered showers remaining. heads up for anything that turns severe. how much rain? you could pick up an inch or two or as this forecast model is forecasting, maybe even three inches out in reading. for tomorrow, still 92. 90 on sunday. a chance of strong storms tomorrow night. 88 on monday. 83 tuesday. that's where the relief comes in. on wednesday we'll see the same thing. much less humid. coming up in sports, one player in particular is adding a spark to the phillies line up. we'll fill in those details. that and much more, next.

friday in the deval e lee. phillies is back for the first time since before all-star break. he's bye-bye on fire. as for the rest of the team, heating up at the plate. 10 runs on 20 hits. the manager thinks the line up mainly helping a lot. >> a guy with a smile on his face is really good to see and we need players that are going to play with a lot of emotion and a lot of energy and he's doing that right now. i think it's rubbing off on some of the guys. you can feel the excitement
