summer storms. we are tracking heavy rain moving into the region right now. dressed in white. this group's outpouring of support to local women. high-tech ship. the president touts the navy's new arsenal. >> nbc 10 news starts now. and we start with storms on the radar tonight. depending on where you lives you need an umbrella if you're heading out for dinner. this right now a live look at storms are rumbling through montgomery county. good evening on this saturday, i'm denise nakano. let's go straight to first alert meteorologist erika martin with the potential for damaging storms. >> that's right. right now we're tracking strong storms move through parts of the lehigh valley, montgomery county as you just mentioned, chester county, sussex, new castle

county, kent counties all see isolated thunderstorms moving through. a severe thunderstorm warning x extended until 6:45 p.m. chester county, montgomery county, philadelphia county. moving from the northwest to the southeast. let's zoom in closer. we're seeing lots of lightning strikes. be mindful of that if you're in norr norristown, glennside, lots of lightning. philadelphia, going to start to see lightning heading our way soon enough. stronger storms, springfield also seeing heavier downpours. also seeing hail returns as well. radar right now locally here, the northwest corner, we are seeing some, again, heavier thunderstorms. so, i want to go ahead and zoom on out because i do want to show you the storms as they approach our area, our neighborhoods. trenton expect some thunderstorms at about 6:44 p.m. middletown, 7:18 p.m. in around the metro area, 6:28 p.m. toms river, expect rumbling and thunderstorms.

some could be very strong. approximately 7:30, 8:00 p.m. coming up in just a bit, we're going to of course time out more storms for you. i'll see you in just a bit. back to you, denise. >> rains could cool us off a bit. right now it's a stem steamny might out there. brandon hudson joins us live from phoenixville with the conditions there. >> reporter: you talked about people bringing their umbrellas to dinner. we've seen a lot of that in the last 30 minutes. it just started raining in the last half hour. we've got a lot of heavy rain, we had some thunder and lightning not too long ago. i want you to look at this, people walking out in the street. it's about ankle deep water in that parking lot right there. this is one of the busiest areas in phoenixville. we're at the intersection of ridge and main street. see people pulling in. some people forgot their umbrellas. like us, we're under an awning. we've got some friends over here. we're making new friends down here. everyone wave. you can see. we're trying to keep dry out here. but like i said, it just started raining in the last half hour.

for the last month. a national group tried to raise awareness about gun violence outside a gun show. nbc 10's aundrea cline thomas reports. >> reporter: people wearing all white stand silently, each one holding a picture of a woman who was murdered. >> we felt like a good message to bring here today would be how at risk women are comparatively when it comes to gun violence. >> reporter: visitors attending a gun show inside the armory look but mostly do not engage. as the organization tries to pass out fliers. the group from new york was formed after the orlando pulse nightclub shooting. >> we are about responsible gun legislation and responsible gun ownership. >> reporter: their demonstration coincides with the recent rash of crimes against women in philadelphia. at least five have been murdered since july 12th. the incidents include a 32-year-old man who killed his

ex-girlfriend on tuesday. then he engaged police in a seven-hour standoff in germantown before turning the gun on himself. >> when you have firearms to the mix, it becomes, you know, especially toxic. >> reporter: korlgaccording to report by the cdc, half of all women who are murdered are killed by a current or former intimate partner. the specifics indicate that was the case in some of the recent incidents in philadelphia. aundrea cline thomas, nbc 10 news. president trump says america's enemies will shake with fear when they see the "u.s.s. gerald r. ford" headed their way. the president made the remarks today at the commissioning ceremony for the $12.9 billion aircraft carrier named for the 38th president of the united states. the "u.s.s. gerald r. ford" is billed as the world's most technologically advanced nuclear powered aircraft carrier. >> no matter where in the world

past views evolved and shouldn't be a distraction. i serve potus' agenda. that's all that matters". today congressional lawmakers reached an afwreegree on how to punish moscow for interfering in u.s. elections. part of the sanctions also punishes iran and north korea. a vote is planned for this coming week before congress leaves for its august vacation. if president trump vetoes the legislation, congress could overturn it. well, it's not your average weekend in harrisburg. lawmakers went back to work today to figure out how to pay for everything in the approved budget. about two hours ago, the session wrapped up without a deal. they're trying to find $2 billion to balance the budget. and in delaware, a 15-year-old girl was shot this morning in wilmington. the girl and a man were shot on 237 27th and north claymont streets just before 1:00 this morning. both are in the hospital tonight as police search for the shooter. new at 6:00, tonight a death investigation at the jersey shore. a body was found on wesley

avenue in ocean city. detectives in cape may county want everyone to know the community is safe and there's not a threat out there. just days after the nation learned senator john mccain has brain cancer, his daughter shared a picture of two of them this morning in arizona. meghan mccain tweeted this picture saying "amazing hike with dad this morning. thank you, all, for your best wishes." the 80-year-old has glioblastoma, one of the most malignant brain tumors. an actor best known for playing mccully culkin's dad in "home of loalone" passed away today. tmz reports he was recovering from back surgery. next on nbc 10 news at 6:00, the health scare for local state troopers. what sent them to the hospital. and taking a shot at a cure.

people on long beach island say they could smell the fire and smoke can be seen as far away as atlantic county. nbc broadcasting legend from philadelphia died today in our nation's capital. jim vance had a smooth voice and unmatched delivery. he was the anchor for our sister station in washington, d.c., for 45 years. jim vance attended college at cheney university. he then started his career in television here in philadelphia. he was a true pioneer. the longest serving anchor in washington. earlier this year, he announced he was battling cancer, but he kept on anchoring. he was delivering the news until the end. jim vance was 75 years old.

scoring a goal for a cure. today dozens of teens ran around in the heat to honor the memory of a bucks county girl who lost her life way too early. nbc 10's pamela osborne reports from quakertown.

♪ >> reporter: it turns out sarah's favorite song "unwritten" best describes her life and legacy. ♪ rest is still unwritten >> reporter: for the next 24 hours, the kids here will celebrate her by taking aim against ovarian cancer, the disease that took her life, at just 12 years old. >> she was an amazing individual. and this event personifies her spirit. >> reporter: more than 200 teens took the field to play the short she loves in her honor. >> it's a great fund-raiser to hang out with friends and get more and more people come every year. >> reporter: some of them have been here for the charity fundraiser start ten years ago. >> i don't like calling it a tournament because we don't compete for first, second, third. >> reporter: the biggest winners will undoubtedly be the women and men who benefit from the research these kids are helping fund. doctors at thomas jefferson university will use the money raised to try to make

advancements in ovarian and pancreatic cancer treatment. >> it's great they keep her spirit alive and the money they raise for ovarian cancer. >> reporter: she has a pretty good idea of what she would have thought of all of this. >> she would be amazed. she would be laughing. smiling. and dancing through the fields. ♪ rest is still unwritten >> reporter: in quakertown, pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. and tonight at the jersey shore, a special celebration for an icon that stood more than a century. it's lucy the elephant's 136th birthday so there was a celebration for the famous statue. the party had performers, games, food and in honor of the world's largest elephant. and this year the philadelphia youth regatta made a few changes because of the heat out there. this morning they decided to shorten the 2,000 meter race to a 1,500 meter. other changes, minimized the amount of time athletes stood or

waited on the water to race. the rain is headed toward philadelphia right now. check out the view looking toward the art museum. here's a live look. we're in for a stormy night. let's go to first alert meteorologist erika martin. >> we can hear the rain on the roof now. the radar shows us the storms moving into the area from the northwest and from the west as well. west-southwest. see these arrows telling us where the storm are coming from right into our neighborhood. let's zoom in a little bit. we do have stronger storms moving into parts ofgomery coun chester county and philadelphia. those storms are rolling in very quickly. we have a severe thunderstorm warning that has been issued until 6:45 p.m. including philadelphia county, montgomery county, parts of chester county and just the northwest of the lehigh valley we're seeing a see view thunderstorm warning issued until 7:00 p.m. we have more thunderstorms moving in again from the northwest into our neighborhood. locally right now, i do want to zoom in and show you lightning strikes and also hail tracks.

so notice here in philadelphia, we're starting to see a couple lightning strikes just the west of us right now. everything moving into our area. abington as well, you'll start to see lots of lightning. here are the hail cores, see walnut-sized hail, marble-sized hail as well. this is right now our current timeframe. our radar loop here showing us what you can expect some thunderstorms in your neighborhood. approximately 6:22 p.m. for upper darby. as those storms move in very quickly. trenton, 6:45 p.m. pemberton, expect thunderstorms approximately 7:01 p.m. lakewood, 7:28 fm for you. again, expecting more thunderstorms rolling in from west into delaware. so dover, 7:37 p.m., that's when you can expect isolated thunderstorms. one or two of them can be strong. egg harbor, 8:29 p.m. for you. vineland, 7:51 p.m. that's when you can expect some thunderstorms to roll into your neighborhood. i do want to time these out for you because it's not going to be

a total wash later tonight but keep the umbrellas handy. you'll need them for the next couple hours. 6:00 p.m. right now, we're seeing storms roll on through. notice by 8:30 p.m., we're seeing a couple of breaks in those thunderstorms. especially for northern delaware and parts of the shore, jersey shore seeing a break in those thunderstorms. more of a break at approximately 10:30 p.m., however, we do have more storms rolling in especially for south jersey, jersey shore and delaware. so we're not done yet. i do want you to know that by early tomorrow morning, the good news is a lot of it does clear out and in fact, this is just after lunchtime. tomorrow. we're not seeing much in the way of rain or thunderstorms, but still seeing lots of clouds in the forecast. so a severe thunderstorm risk right now. it is marginal. not a huge issue, but, of course, we will be tracking so follow us on social media. so here is your ten-day forecast. 88 is expected high temperature for tomorrow. 89 on monday. l 83 on tuesday. tracking the chance of showers, possible isolated thunderstorms on monday and the following thursday. here's danny with sports.

>> hey, good to see you again, i'm danny pommells from csn. phillies won their third straight game last night against the brewers. offense pulled their weight, six runs to the cause of aaron knno who was spectacular again. seventh win of the season. former firks-round pick, seven innings, nola gave up only five hits, walked two and struck out nine using a new style that has added more power to his repertoi repertoire. the tarp is on the field now but greg murphy sat down with the phils' presumptive ace to determine where nola's added boost is coming from. >> come from rehab. i worked with ray burris down there and had to do something to take stress of my elbow. you know, i didn't want to feel that again when i started throwing so i started using my legs a little more and didn't really understand it at the time. 2016 when i tried to put that in my head, i wasn't using them right. i went and looked at some video during rehab. from that with ray. and i wasn't doing it right.

here's a look down broad street. the rain is really coming down. >> yeah, denise, we're already hearing it on the roof. the thunderstorms are moving in very quickly. so of course i was timing that out for you. i want to show you all the lightning strikes moving across our area. notice a little bit of a break here. however, we do have some more storms on the way. so keep the umbrellas handy if you're headed out in the next couple hours. locally, again, i want to show you the threat of severe thunderstorm warning until 6:45 p.m. we're seeing lots of lightning and we're also seeing some hail already that hasn't been reported. walnut sized. we're also seeing marble-sized hail as well. so, again, severe thunderstorm warning issued until 6:45 p.m. and in fact, denise, that was extended because initially it was at 6:00 p.m. that the warning was going to expire. now 6:45 p.m. here's your radar with the size of the hail, walnut size and marble-sized hail. that's really important, denise, because people have to understand that hail can be dangerous. sometimes it can damage your car windows, and if you're walking, it definitely could hurt you as

you're walking down the road. so radar, again, wider perspective here, timing out the threat of those thunderstorms moving into your area. we are seeing the threat of some thunderstorms in dover at approximately 7:37 p.m. right now, the thunderstorms are moving at approximately 40 to 50 miles per hour. egg harbor, 8:29 p.m. so even though you're going to see a little bit of a break, there's more headed in your direction. so you are not done yet. and i really want you to know that because here is your hour-by-hour showing those storms that eventually will start to clear. you see a little bit of a break, but there, denise, you start to see more and then it looks like we're going to have the threat of more thunderstorms later tonight. >> okay. update at 11:00. that's nbc 10 news for now. for erika, zany, adanny, all of. see you all at 10:00.
