10:00 pm
i thought it would be scored a hit. e-1. >> mike: this is an old-fashioned rally we have going right now. >> tom: outside. >> mike: a lot of times a home run is a rally killer because you have to start all over. freddie gallon freddy galvis. restarted it. all the relievers look like they're 6'6". >> john: okay, you got that out of the way. you tried to tie it up.
10:01 pm
now shoot this thing the other way if he's going to stay out there. >> john: got that pull swing working today. >> mike: he wants to get them all. >> john: ground ball to second base will either load them up or freddie will score. >> tom: santana has a good arm but he is deep out in right field. inside. 2-2. >> mike: i don't know why the milwaukee pitcher would mess with that pitch right now.
10:02 pm
>> tom: tried to come inside again. >> mike: if you want to get an rbi, just poke it the other way right here. because you know he's going away with this, right, john? >> john: and that's the thing where franco has to make sure that he just stays on this ball. if he comes in, try to fight it off. you can't roll over a ground er here and hit into a double play.
10:03 pm
>> tom: bouncer over the mound picked up by sogard. runners on second and third. 4-3 on the putout and there are two outs. >> john: they got the shift on a little bit. watch arcia come into the picture here. watch arcia. if sogard lets him catch this ball this is a double play because arcia has all his momentum going to work, second base had his foot touched. throw to first. now a base hit scores two and it's a one-run game. i've never seen that, he hit himself in the head and spit came out. did you see that? we have to show that again. that was amazing. hand/eye coordination is unbelievable.
10:04 pm
>> tom: it's 0-1. >> mike: he might have had a play at third, too. it was running right to third base when he fielded that ball. >> tom: second and third, two outs, the phillies have scored four in the inning. a three-run game. that ball had some good sink on it. >> john: watch this. a little hit in the head. >> mike: that's a good one. that's good. >> tom: the phillies send nine men to the plate.
10:05 pm
able to make it tloud. we'll go to the eighth. the
10:06 pm
>> tom: phillies baseball is brought to you by your local chevrolet dealers and jefferson health. the phillies are down 8-5 as we go to the top of the eighth inning.
10:07 pm
time for our hyundai defensive plays of the game. a couple good plays by the phils outfielders tonight. >> john: this one by herrera save add run. a long way to go. tracked it perfectly and then howie ken fresh off the disabled list, fresh with a diving catch also to save some runs and those are hyundai defensive plays of the game brought to you by your local hyundai dealers. >> tom: perkins stays in to play first base. hoby milner is on. 2.25 e.r.a., he's on to face phillips who shows bunt. takes it inside. >> john: it would have been nice to get one or two more there, wouldn't it? you get greedy. drop a four spot on them. had an opportunity to score more. >> tom: outside, 2-0.
10:08 pm
pinto warming up in the bullpen. milner is probably facing phillips and then will go to pinto. inside, 3-1. arcia is on deck. fly ball left field. and howie kendrick is out there. one out here in the eighth inning. well, pete has not gotten up. it looks like arcia will face hoby milner. let's check in with gregg murphy. >> thank you, guys. it's the unlimited baseball break.
10:09 pm
the chicago cubs are starting to play like the team that won the world series a year ago and they're getting another starter back as hendricks is set to join the team monday. hendricks has been on the disabled list since june 5th with inflammation in his pitching hand. last season hendricks led all of baseball with an e.r.a. of 2.13. he was good. the yankees news, not so good for them. starling castro heading to the disabled list the second time in four weeks. he's still dealing with some hamstring injuries. they're saying they think he came back too soon from his hamstring injuries. that he arrived back a week ago. he's heading back to the disabled list at this point, something he's been dealing with his entire career and they're trying to get him healthy. he'll be sitting for a while. >> tom: they arcia
10:10 pm
is 2-3 today. 3-2. warming up in the on-deck circle. way inside. ball four. so he walks. by the way, around baseball, adrian beltre picked up another hit. beltre is now 13 hits away from 3,000 for his major league career. >> mike: one of the most underrated third basemen ever.
10:11 pm
he has more than both chipper jones and myself. underrated. >> john: how many gold gloves? he has to have a bunch of them, too, doesn't he? >> tom: i think the last time i looked he had. i'm going to check that to make sure. there's rumors or there were rumors that the red sox were interested in bringing him back because they've had so many problems with third base this year and he said i prefer to stay in texas. outside. five gold gloves for adrian beltre. >> mike: he doesn't need those gold gloves to get a check into cooperstown but they surely will -- i mean, he has to be in a discussion of all-time great players at my position.
10:12 pm
>> tom: too good for this generation. one ball and no strikes. popped him up. cameron perkins in foul territory. kind of in no man's land. >> mike: the ball spinning back to the right-field line. the backspin on the ball like the catcher at home plate you have to let the ball come back to you because it will spin back to the field. that's a tough play to put on him. don't know how much first base he's played recently. look how far hernandez has to go for that ball. he's playing double play depth at second base. >> john: he looked up and slowed up. that's one of those that you have to run down t lhe line and
10:13 pm
maybe in fair territory or foul territory because that ball will come back. but if you try to run straight at it where it's at, you're going to get lost. >> tom: one ball and two strikes. >> mike: gentleman pulled the old hat move. you have to plan that. comes up here i'm going to use my hat. >> tom: he couldn't get it, though. a young lady got it. he deferred. >> mike: the lady next to him got the ball. he did the dirty work. >> tom: in the dirt. 2-2. >> mike: ripped it right out of there. >> john: you talk about using your legs and positioning. she used her legs, she got position and boxed him out. that's moses malone stuff right there.
10:14 pm
>> tom: upstairs. they throw behind the runner and he is back. >> john: this is a busy place. i like it when they might not hit me a ball for three or four innings. >> tom: a swing and a miss. two outs. >> mike: okay. you get that kind of fastball right there, what's the deal with the 3-2 slider to the guy leading off the inning? >> tom: to a right-handed hitter? i don't know. >> mike: down and in off the plate.
10:15 pm
>> john: you're the smart one here. you went to college, right? >> mike: not harvard, though. >> john: how many years did you go three? >> mike: what do you mean? you don't think i graduated? i graduated early. i got all my credits. it took me four years and one extra quarter to get out of there. >> john: so you are the smart one. >> tom: what was your degree in? >> mike: business administration. >> tom: john, you have to get him involved in the cheese steak business. >> mike: by the way, i'm working on an appearance for you now. you may not even know about it. >> john: i don't. >> mike: i am. a nice one. >> john: you're my agent? >> mike: no. you know who my agent is. >> tom: two balls and one strike. sogard. >> mike: i know you're going to need
10:16 pm
a little more -- >> john: can you imagine him calling someone, i have john kruk here, i want to book an appearance. why don't you just come? forget him. >> tom: to short right field. williams makes the catch and the inning is over. no runs, no hits, one man left. johnny has some extra work. bottom of the eighth.
10:17 pm
10:18 pm
>> tom: count on nbc 10 first alert weather. erica, glenn, tammy, bill, and crystal rated most accurate for your neighborhood. jacob barnes who has been red-hot for the brewers will take over bottom of the eighth inning. it's a three-run game. opposition is 0 for their last 21 against barnes. he has not allowed a run in his nine games.
10:19 pm
nick williams who is 0-3 will lead things off just as he led off the seventh and made the first out. that was just a challenging fastball right there. >> mike: 97. >> tom: 0-2. >> mike: i never thought i'd be a miles per hour guy. i joined the crowd. >> tom: would it have affected you? >> mike: would i want to know what he's throwing? >> tom: yes. this is a base hit into right center field. so much for 0 for
10:20 pm
the last 21. hot hitter, odubel. >> mike: nick got him a knock. an at-bat you might want to take a strike. he did swing at ball one, the first pitch. but the end result is what counts and it turns that at-bat into a base hit. broken bat but still a base hit. >> tom: hitting streak for williams. phillies with six consecutive games with five or more runs. for the first time since may of 2011. actually kind of amazing. odubel is 3-3 with three extra-base hits. has 31 doubles. one away from daniel
10:21 pm
murphy who leads the majors with 32. >> mike: back to your question about the miles per hour, oh, that fast. >> tom: was it up when you played? >> mike: i don't think so. >> tom: john, i don't think it was up when you played. >> john: i don't recall. >> tom: i think one of the first times i remember seeing it was armando benitez, if you remember him, when he was pitching for the orioles. odubel just screwed him seven into the ground. >> john: he might have overswung there just a little bit. >> tom: a little over exuberant. going down. >> mike: he's just trying to get on
10:22 pm
base. >> john: trying to work one the other way. >> mike: how far do you want to hit it? good lord. >> tom: odubel asked for time-out and wasn't granted. started to step back in. he needs a reality tv show, doesn't he?
10:23 pm
>> john: at some point wouldn't you think barnes would go back to the slider that he fell down on? >> tom: i might have gone back to it the next pitch. >> john: just to see if he'd fall again. >> mike: he's actually having a pretty good at-bat. he is having a very confident at-bat right here. i would think the pitch to get him out would be a splitter or an off-speed pitch with some good motion, but we'll see. >> tom: 2-2 to herrera. outside, 3-2. >> mike: now the big key, can we lay off this bad boy.
10:24 pm
>> john: that's what i mean, i mean, we've seen 3-2 change-ups. odubel is not the tying run. >> mike: i think he might think he is. >> john: does barnes challenge him and say if you beat me, you beat me but i'm not going to walk you or go for the strikeout. >> mike: that would have been the deal in the old days. >> tom: over the head of thames into right field, the fourth hit of the night for odubel. >> john: that was a short breaking slider which was a ball. he beat it into the ground. it gets over to first base. must have caught that with a ton of topspin. >> tom: the first four-hit game for odubel.
10:25 pm
>> mike: watch the second baseman. >> tom: he could have easily gotten to third. >> mike: both runners move up. >> john: i'm sure that's a conversation manuel and more dedini will have. that ball gets past soga sogard. >> mike: a double play would score you a run and get you with two. >> tom: cameron takes low, 1-0. if ever someone was due it's cameron rupp. >> john: that pitch was 98. >> mike: it was clocked at 98.
10:26 pm
i knew a guy throwing 98 i would start swinging while he's winding up. >> tom: ball with no strikes to rupp. 2-0. perkins on deck. >> mike: there's nobody out. >> tom: we mentioned the earned run average was under 1.00 in the previous club games. barnes has nod allowed a run in his last nine games. >> mike: i would turn cameron rupp loose. look for a fastball anywhere and try to hit one into the right field seats. boom! it looked like a cutter, didn't it? cut a little bit, but that's good. what the heck. >> john: the man is throwing 98. >> mike: i hear you. apparently that
10:27 pm
cutter he can throw as easy as that 98-mile-an-hour fastball. >> tom: two balls and one strike to rupp. to right field. going back on it is thames. it's gone! three-run home run for cameron rupp and the phillies have climbed all the way back down by seven. they tie it up here in the bottom of the eighth inning. >> mike: that ball was low and away. i wouldn't want to be forearming with cameron rupp because that would hurt. >> tom: rupp's puppies are celebrating. >> mike: some dancing or something. there we go. see, that ball middle of the plate but down. think cameron knew he got it? >> john: what did he do bat it back no
10:28 pm
play? >> mike: don't bring that in here. we're getting all kinds of basketball references. here we go. >> tom: the first runs allowed by barnes in nine games. >> john: and there's no outs. >> tom: back-to-back innings of thee-run home runs. no balls and one strike to perkins. inside. 1-1. >> mike: got a call right there. i think he thought he got it. >> john: they're co-catchers, aren't they? >> tom: he said today one guy is hitting more than the other so that's why he's playing more but he said i'm keeping it open. when somebody else starts to hit i may change it up. >> john: cheesehead starting to melt a
10:29 pm
little bit. >> tom: one ball, strikes to perkins. he hits one back. >> mike: we might have something here. >> john: that's the closest ball i've seen come to me. how many gold gloves you got? >> mike: ten. >> john: do you know how many i've got? you're catching it, zero. >> tom: one ball and two strikes to perkins. >> mike: i would probably run away from it. >> tom: fouls one off to the right. >> john: i think at some point you just let it hit you. >> mike: that come with heat on it. it can't come in high. >> tom: an 8-8 game, neris warming up. >> mike: if we get a run --
10:30 pm
>> tom: ground ball through the hole to the left side. cameron perkins off the bench is 2-2. craig counsell is probably sitting there thinking there is no playbook for what's happening to his team. he's going to the phone again. >> mike: all right, johnny boy. a little slider hitting the hole there. >> john: he's going to be over his data on phone. >> mike: you're the manager. you need a quick answer on this. are we bunting here? the guy just hit a three-run home run. >> john: i wouldn't. that's one thing cesar can hit a fastball. left that hole open. a nice gapper into right center, whatever center.
10:31 pm
would be good. >> tom: shows bunt. back in the seventh inning he wasn't bunting. >> john: you hit one this hard, that's hard. >> mike: i believe in it. i believe with what you have coming up with freddie and has two knocks in a game already and perkins. no, no, no, no, no. >> tom: double play. >> john: he had a heck of a jump, too. >> tom: well, that's a shame. >> john: he's going to talk to someone.
10:32 pm
>> tom: i think he's upset with cameron kins. perkins. >> mike: it might have been a missed sign. >> tom: freddy galvis has two hits tonight and takes low. that quieted the place up. >> mike: cameron looks like he's a little confused but somebody missed a sign somewhere. if you're going straight sacrifice you wouldn't bunt and run. >> john: i think when the manager by-passes the guy, i'm certain that's the one who missed the. >> mike: he might have thought
10:33 pm
hit-and-run. he might have thought hit-and-run was on. i don't think it would have been a bad play. >> tom: he pulls it foul. perkins has had kind of an odd entrance into this game. you see that pitch to galvis. he also has the pop-up that he didn't grab and now the baserunning mistake. >> tom: 2-1. off the glove and the inning is over. 3-1 on the game up. cameron goes opposite field for this shot. that's the seventh
10:34 pm
home run of the year. we'll go to the inning, the phillies and brewers locked in an 8-8 game. to its roots. brewed only in golden, colorado... ...and nowhere else. ever. coors banquet. that's how it's done.
10:35 pm
>> tom: the phillies have tied it up. now to the top of the ninth inning in an 8-8 game. every time the phillies retire the opposing team 1, 2, 3, comcast will make a contribution to charities.
10:36 pm
xfinity will change the way you experience tv. here is hector, 2-3. an e.r.a. of 3.21. hector will face thames, ryan braun and travis shaw. >> mike: braun's out. >> tom: that's right. >> john: remember they had a big lead, gave him a rest. >> tom: i didn't mark it down. that's a huge piece to this it game, too. >> john: i remember when tommy lasorda took his starters out and we scored in the ninth to win the game. tommy wasn't happy which made me very happy. >> tom: that ball is
10:37 pm
hit well to right field. williams is going back. it will stay in yard off the scoreboard. thames. the throw not in time. just missed getting him. >> mike: a nice throw. a great hustle by thames coming out of the batter's box hard. the ball duck hooked. >> john: if that chain link fence wasn't there nick would have had him at second easy. that chain link deadens it and kicked it off. >> tom: so thames is at second with his 18th double of the year. >> mike: that's where he would be.
10:38 pm
>> tom: perez who has been a good addition off the bench for the brewers the last few years bumps it foul. they have their rbi leader on deck in travis shaw. >> john: a lot of their hitters when they step out to take a practice swing is always with their top hand. perez just did it. thames does it all the time. >> tom: he fires it and thames it out! what a throw. that was a bb. you heard cameron rupp saying three, three, three. >> mike: that's big. he played that with some athleticism. a nice reverse pivot.
10:39 pm
right on target. >> john: they have to get into their throwing mechanics. i throw over the top so i have to throw this one over the top. what a great play by hector. how about pitchers with their throw. a force-out at second. that one right there is huge. >> tom: travis shaw has two extra-base hits tonight. take outside, travis shaw. one ball and one strike. >> john: that was dangerous right there. a little bit of a hanger. some fans here,
10:40 pm
let's go brewers. >> tom: when they were scoring the runs over the third base dugout there's a pretty good amount. >> mike: he tried to pull it. he tried to pull it. a challenge there with the fastball. see if he's still in pull mode get a grounder to cesar. >> tom: the pitch is lined to right center field. odubel gets to it. perez to third. the brewers have first and third with one man down. and shaw has three hits. and here is domingo santa santana.
10:41 pm
>> mike: good baserunninging. perez read that ball. third base with one out. >> john: if the bunt was successful i'm sure would have walked shaw. >> mike: this is where that splitter, that double play o third base. get out of the inning. >> tom: going out to talk to hector to get on the same page. >> mike: and the strikeout potential.
10:42 pm
pete looking over the defense. here is where the confidence comes into play. >> tom: 96. hacking first pitch. it's 0-1. >> john: he and nick williams have the same approach, first pitch fastball, we're going to let it fly. now you can get him to chase. >> tom: the brewers will retake the lead. are rbi single by santana. it's 9-8, milwaukee. >> mike: that was a bad pitch. i know he wanted that ball down.
10:43 pm
he didn't want to throw that pitch for a strike. watch where this pitch is. >> john: that's the struggle. that just tumbles. doesn't hav downward b on it. >> tom: aguilar will be pinch-hitting for the pitcher. >> john: a large fellow here. >> tom: it sure is. >> john: if you're hector, i have to keep this here. >> tom: they've shown the ability to ns t last two tonight. innings, the phillies. on the outside corner, 2-1. he's been a good
10:44 pm
pinch hitter. 12 hits as a pinch hitter including a home run. 0-2. got him. the first strikeout. two outs. and phillips is the batter. he's 0-4.
10:45 pm
the phillies will have kendrick, franco, the first two hitters and then the pitcher's spot. >> mike: nava maybe depending? >> tom: pete said it was day-to-day he would check in with him to see if he was available. nava has been sitting on the bench most of the night. >> john: if there's two outs you might throw him in there. it's either him or knapp. >> tom: or blanco or knapp. two outs, nobody on. >> mike: nava is my man if all we need is contact. >> john: a double play wouldn't hurt.
10:46 pm
i don't know how well he can run. >> tom: a change-up. it's 2-1. >> john: you had heard how deflated it was on perkins running and the pop-up bunt. took the air right out of the balloon. >> john: it was deflating. you have to hand it to the brewers, they did some hittinging against pretty darned good closer. i know he's not the closer he was last year.
10:47 pm
>> tom: a long run for kendrick and he's there. the inning is over. the brewers, though, retake the lead. they get a run on an rbi single by santana.
10:48 pm
>> tom: we've had our share of deliveries. seventh inning with cesar hernandez. three-run home run. an 8-5 game and then in the eighth cameron rupp, a three-run home run that ties it at 8-8. but the brewers blew an 8-1 lead. domingo santana the

10:51 pm
strike three called. 99 on the outside corner. one away. >> john: that got there quick. >> tom: in 45 2/3 innings. >> mike: 80 in 40? that's a deuce an inning. >> tom: breaking ball and it's 0 had-1. didn't like that baseball.
10:52 pm
>> john: let me try another ball. how about throwing the same thing again? don't get me wrong, i want franco to get a double or a home run or something but, wow, why would you even think about that? >> tom: arcia, down to the last out after trailing 8-1. they tied it up at 8-8. and now the brewers have taken the lead with two quick outs. andres blanco. so we assume that nava is not available.
