victory. we start with politics. a lot going on with the russia investigation. all-eyes on the president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner. we know what he will tell lawmakers on capitol hill today. and we learn more about the abrupt departure of sean spicer. we're going to talk to the president's former campaign manager in a moment. let's begin with nbc white house correspondent, kristen welker. >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump will try to put the focus on his domestic agenda today, delivering a speech about health care this afternoon. but it's his son-in-law who is in the hot seat, jared kushner, expected to deliver a strongly-warded statement insisting he didn't collude with the russians and, quote, he has nothing to hide. this morning, jared kushner, in his own words. as the president's son-in-law gets set to face tough questions from staff members with the

senate intelligence committee. nbc news has obtained his statement to congress. kushner says, i did not collude and i don't know anyone else who colluded with a foreign government. i did not rely on russian funds. in the 11-stage statement ru kushner addresses two points that have become flash points. he said in april 2016, he met the russian ambassador. he said after election day, he had to ask, what is the name of the russian ambassador? and that trump tower meeting with a russian attorney in 2016, kushner received an e-mail from donald trump jr. asking for a meeting with no other attendees listed. and he didn't read the e-mail chain forwarded to him. but after arriving late, he

found the russian attorney discussing adoptions. and he e-mailed his assistant, and asked, can you call me on my cell? need excuse to get out of meeting. the meeting is behind closed doors. and he won't be under oath. the russian investigation, top of mind for the president. he tweeted on saturday, all agree the u.s. president has the complete power to pardon, why think of that when the only crimes are leaks against us. >> pardons have not been discussed. and pardons are not on the table. >> why are we talking -- >> there's no one to pardon? there's no presidential crime. >> reporter: but a different message from anthony scaramucci, the new communications director. >> we're talking about that. he brought that up. he doesn't have to be pardoned. as for kushner, he is expected to address reports that he tried to set up secret communications with the kremlin.

he will say, quote, i did not suggest a secret pack channel. and his security would be prematurely, leaving out all contacts with foreign officials, not just those from russia. congress has struck a bipartisan deal to impose sweeping sanctions on russia for its election meddling. the white house was opposed to the bill. over the weekend, the top aides sent conflicting signals whether trump will support the legislation now. >> we'll see if we can get clarity on that. let's focus in on the dramatic shakeup of the communications operation. how it will change the communications out of the white house and what's been a rocky relationship with the media. hallie jackson has that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that new communications director who is making a move from wall street to washington, is coming out strong against his own staff. warning he will not tolerate

i liked the makeup artist. i can get all of the help i can get. #humor. scaramucci says he will do some tv if he wants. but sanders will be handling the podium regularly at the briefings. telling me, he is not a ball hog. >> got it. >> we need all the help we can get. corey lewandowski served as one of president trump's campaign managers. he joins us now. good morning. >> good morning to you. >> jared kushner has given his account on paper. he's going to talk to congress later about what happened with that plemeeting with the russia lawyer. apparently jared kushner is going to say, i got pulled in late. i got out as fast as i could. does this come back to donald trump jr.? was it a mistake for him to not only schedule that meeting but to bring others into it and put them in that position? >> i think what jared is talking about, if you looked at his calendar and the memory.

the meeting he was asked to attend was at the request of his brother-in-law. it was not uncommon for him to pop inmeetings. there's no indication about who that meeting was with or what it was about. >> that's why i'm asking about donald trump jr. was that a mistake of him to do that? >> donald trump jr. is the one that initiated the meeting. if you were to go back and look, he probably wouldn't have done it the same way. he said that very publicly. but the notion these meetings don't occur, across campaigns all the time, when individuals are trying to get opposition research from opponents is a fallacy. >> you were campaign manager, would you have taken that meeting? be honest. would you have? >> i was obviously the campaign manager at the time. i did not participate in that meeting. if i thought it was a meeting that would have been relevant to the outcome of the campaign, i would have been there. i did not think it was relevant.

i did not know the individuals involved. it was a friend who asked donald trump jr. to take the meeting. he took it as a courtesy. and looking back, he would tell you that it probably wasn't the right thing to do. but nothing came of the meeting. >> there were tough eer sanctio on russia. we have a now white house communications director who is casting suspense on what the president might do. do you think he will sign it? >> i haven't talked to the president or what he will do regarding that legislation. if there's an opportunity to work with russia, that's a good thing for us, and for our country. if we're adversaries and we can't work with russia because they're punitive against us, the president will be tough on russia. if we have to put sanctions in place, this president has been very, very clear. his priority is america first. that hadn't changed since the day he was elected. >> let me ask you about the shakeup in the administration. sean spicer decided to resign.

do you think will there will be more big personnel changes forth coming? >> i have been public in my criticism of the administration and the leaks that come out of it. what we've seen over the weekend is that anthony scaramucci, the new communications director said he will find the leaks. that means that individuals who are working inned that building are fired because they're not on the president's agenda, think it's the right thing to do. if you're working in that administration, the guy that opens the door or the chief of staff, if you're not on the president's agenda, yu shouldn't be there. i have full confidence that anthony scaramucci is going to find those leaks. >> are you going to take a job in the administration? >> i haven't been offered a job of the administration. i like coming on your show without problems. >> are you advising the president? >> i have been a steadfast supporter of the administration.

if i receive a phone call from members of the team of the president, i will take that call and give them advice. >> our nicolle wallace is the host of "deadline white house." nicolle, good morning. >> what do you make of the shakeup in the communications team? and there are rumors that there are other big resignations. >> it's the president's prerogative to hire and fire whomever he wants. this is someone who communicates more consistently with the way the president sees himself communicating. he's a street fighter. the president has made no secret to friends and confidants that he has been dissatisfied about fighting back about stories about russia. anthony scar moochuchamucci sai russia investigation is a hoax. he has someone in line of the thinking of these things. >> you heard scaramucci saying

he wants to change the culture. that's how he referred to it, inside the communications division of the white house. how does he go that? >> i'm guessing you don't really boost morale by saying you're going to fire everybody. and anybody that covers this white house, knows it's not difficult to get folks to talk about what's going on, to talk about one another. and one of the most stalwart defenders of the president said the addition of scaramucci is one more person, you know, in the swirl. and what the real problem is in this white house, they don't have a functioning chain of command as a staff. they don't have a powerful chief of staff that keeps everybody out of everybody else's lane. the chaos is a product of a weak chief of staff. this was a decision he lobbied against. he opposed with all of his might. and the president made it anyway. you talk about other shoes to drop, i think all eyes are on steve bannan and reince prebus

who were against scaramucci. a lot more happening this morning. and federal charges are expected against the driver of a tractor-trailer, involved in a deadly and disturbing case of human smuggling in texas. dozens of people were found in the back of a swelters 18-wheeler. gabe gutierrez is in san antonio with this. >> reporter: dozens of people crammed into a tractor-trailer in this parking lot, in the stifling texas heat with no air conditioning. the suspected driver of that tractor-trailer is expected to be formally charged later today. this morning, federal investigators are trying to unravel how a human smuggling operation inside this tractor-trailer turned deadly. >> something out of the movies. you don't expect to see that kind of thing around here. >> reporter: the gruesome scene, a sweltering parking lot in san

antonio. someone climbed out of the back of the tractor-trailer parked near the store and begged for water. a walmart employee called 911. police found 39 suspected undocumented immigrants found inside. 8 were dead. others went to the hospital. >> people were inside that trailer without water. >> reporter: investigators say the suspected driver, james bradley junior of clearwater, florida, will be charged later today. some blame the political climate. >> the harsh rhetoric is what is responsible for tragedies like what happened in san antonio. >> reporter: but human trafficking has been big business for decades. it's reminisce sint of a 2003 case when 70 people were trapped in a tractor-trailer. last year, homeland security officials investigated 2,000 cases of human trafficking p making 3,000 arrests.

facing what could be tough questions on capitol hill today, about his meetings with russians. we're going to get more from white house correspondent, kristen welker. good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning to you. his meeting with senate intelligence committee staffers today, jared kushner is expected to say in strong terms that he didn't collude with the russians and he has nothing to hide. in an 11-page statement, kushner will detail four meetings and he will say nothing improper happened at those meets. he'll talk about two scrutinized meetings. one with the russian ambassador and one with the attorney. he briefly met the russian ambassador with a campaign event. the encounter so quick, the day after election day, he had to ask, what is the name of the russian ambassador? and the second one, the trump tower meeting with the russian attorney in june of 2016. kushner expected to say he received an e-mail from his

brother-in-law, donald trump jr. but after arriving late at the meeting, kushner will say he found the attorney discussing aoptions and it was a waste of his time. he e-mailed his assistant saying, can you call me on my cell, need excuse to get out of meeting. kushner's meeting is behind closed doors and he won't be under oath. a truck driver is facing charges after a suspected human smuggling operation left nine people dead. gabe gutierrez is in texas, where others were rescued from inside a sweltering trablgt ii tractor-trailer. >> reporter: dozens of migrants found inside that tractor-trailer in this parking lot, in the stifling texas heat with no air conditioning. as you mentioned, the suspected driver of that tractor-trailer is expected to be formally charged. investigators are trying to

figure out how this smuggling operation turned deadly. police say that temperatures reached up to 101 degrees here in san antonio on saturday. and someone climbed out of the back of that tractor-trailer, begging for water. that's when a walmart employee called 911. when police arrived, they found a gruesome scene. eight people were found dead inside the tractor-trailer. another died at the hospital. now, the suspected driver, 60-year-old james bradley jr. will be facing charges. 30 suspected migrants remain in the hospital, 17 in critical condition. carson, back to you. >> a horrific scene there in san antonio, texas. thank you to you. police are searching for a suspect in northern switzerland. a man with a chain saw entered an office building and injured five people. officials do not believe that incident has any connection to terrorism. breaking overnight, a dramatic rescue operation in

we talked to them about, was it possible to make another film? we met the princes earlier this year and began to talk about it. >> you probably had expectations. how open you thought they would be. and you were sitting in the room with them, right, during interviews. did they surpass your expectations? >> it's difficult stuff to talk about, isn't it? private and personal. once they decided they would make this film to honor their mum, they were incredibly candid. >> we see a side of diana through her son's eyes. they talk about her laugh. how she was so exceeding love. and we see some images that have never before been seen. >> this film, it's a personal film for the princes. but it's a universal film. it's asking, how do you keep alive the memory of someone you loved and lost. prince harry showed you do that, not just through looking at photographs, but the way you live your own life. they are very much carrying on
