>> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. what a dramatic morning this is turning out to be. with john mccain making that surprise return to washington, just days after getting diagnosed with brain cancer. republican leadership, knowing every vote is critical on health care, had hoped he would make it back in time for today's procedural vote that kicks off debate in the first place on a bill. this is something the senator seemed supportive of last week. if the gop clears this hurdle, there are plenty more ahead, with questions on what the senate bill will even look like in what is shaping up to be another health care cliff-hanger. one of the senate's fiercest fighters, back for battle. john mccain returning to capitol hill, to help republicans clear a critical health care hurdle. the senator, recently diagnosed with brian cancer. until now, recuperating at home, in arizona, taking a hike. in washington, a different uphill climb. for him and the rest of the gop,

votes this week. we may hear more from the president when he holds a joint news conference in the rose garden with the lebanese prime minister. no shortage of questions for him in a busy day here in d.c. >> it sounds like mccain is a yes vote on health care. do republicans have a vote this time? >> reporter: if i had a crystal ball, i would be able to answer that for you. but i don't know if republican leadership knows for sure they will be able to get this thing across the finish line. and the vote today is the first procedural step to start debate in the first place. that's what leaders think that's what john mccain will support. but it's not clear if he will support what is down the road. repeal now and delay a replacement? or something else. that's why today will be critical. watch for the gop leaders to go after familiar names. moderate republicans, like susan

collins, for example, or rob portman. >> a lot of suspension. something else to watch on capitol hill, another appearance by president trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, jared kushner. he will face more questions about his contacts with russia during the campaign after testifying on monday there was no collusion. peter alexander has more on that. peter, good morning. >> reporter: carson, good morning. one of president trump's top aides insisted that attorney general jeff sessions has the president's confidence. but it certainly doesn't look that way. more and more, it looks like the president's in the market for a new attorney general. the president with a blistering critique of sessions for his very week position on hillary clinton crimes. under withering new pressure this morning, jeff sessions who infuriated the president by recusing himself from the russia investigation, back in the west wing, meeting with aides about his future. the president on twitter taking the unusual step of branding his

team acquitted himself pretty well. he had the impressive backdrop of the white house. his defense, though, was notwithstanding all the professional look and feel of the testimony. i was a rookie. i was a novice. i was overwhelmed. there's more questions to ask him, for example, about his role in the comey firing. about his role in the warning from the justice department, that the russians could blackmail the national security adviser. there's plenty for investigators to look at going forward. >> jeremy bash, thank you so much. thanks, guys. more to get to this morning, including newly released video that shows the shooting of telespecial forces soldiers at a military base in jordan. on monday, the jordanian government released security camera footage of this incident. the three green berets were shot by a jordanian soldier as their convoy waited at the base gate. the defendant said he opened fire because he feared the base coming under awac. the soldiers are waving their

hands in an attempt to surrender. a jordanian military court sentenced the shooter to prison with hard labor. there's more developments in the disturbing case human smuggling in texas. gabe gutierrez is in san antonio with more. good morning. >> reporter: carson good morning. at least 20 of the undocumented immigrants are hospitalized. several have spoken to investigators and described a terrifying ordeal. authorities say nearly 100 people were crammed inside that tractor-trailer, in pitch black darkness and stifling heat. james bradley jr. is in custody, after new details emerge about horrifying allegations of human smuggling. now, ten immigrants have tied, after 39 of them, including teenagers, trapped in this sweltering tractor-trailer.

>> it makes me angry that people can be so cold. >> reporter: bradley told investigators he was driving the truck from iowa to brownsville, texas, but stopped in loredo, to get it detailed. his boss sold the trailer and asked him to take it to his new owner. he was unaware of the contents. when he opened the back door, he was knocked to the ground by some of the people who fled. authorities interviewed some of the survivors who said they started to take turns breathing from the only ventilation hole. they told investigators they paid smugglers and others linked to the drug cartel to help them cross into the u.s. this survivor said people were crying and begging for water. this police body camera video from a similar incident in texas shows the stifling conditions. dozens of unduocumented

immigrants gasping for air. a 13-year-old boy among survivors. >> 137 degrees the. >> reporter: border patrol agents showing how quickly the smuggling operations can turn deadly. >> we checked the temperature in this trailer, which had been shut for about two hours. it went from 105 degrees to up over 130, in a matter of ten minutes or so. >> reporter: bradley, the driver, is charged with one count of transporting undocumented immigrants, resulting in ten deaths. if convicted, he faces up to life in prison. even the death penalty. he's due back in court later this week. carson? savannah? >> a horrible story in san antonio, texas. gabe, thanks so much. as we mentioned at the top of the show, the vatican's historic fountains are going dry. the holy sea says it is shutting off 100 of its fountains because of italy's drought. this past spring was the third-driest in 60 year. more than a million residents in

ro rome are facing water rations. the decision to turn off the fountains is reaching to pope francis' teaching. frightening moments on a busy new jersey highway. look at the suv, beginning to swerve. suddenly, it swings to the far left lane. almost hits another car and turns over. amazingly, no other vehicles were hit during the accident. and the driver of the suv was also not injured. the wreck, as you can imagine, blocked two lanes of traffic for several hours. >> especially the car right behind. hello, al. >> hello. looking at more rain in the southwest. they're just getting dumped on, that monsoonal moisture coming in there. this is maricopa, arizona. a lot of flooding. folks making their way, slowly. some guys deciding, i'm going to keep biking. and looking at severe weather up

through the plains and into the upper midwest, as another system pushes in. we right now have enhanced risk of strong storms. 5 million folks at risk. we move into tomorrow. it shifts to green bay, madison, chicago, springfield, indianapolis, 24 million people at risk. and can't rule out tornados. by thursday, it moves into the northeast, and charleston, atlanta, new york city. the storms will continue into the night. mostly wind damage. but there could be some hail damage, as well. we're going they say glory awaits at the finish but what about the start? that moment you suck up all that doubt that fear all those reasons why not and decide to begin.

new criticism at his attorney general this morning. the president tweeting that jeff sessions has taken a weak position on hillary clinton crimes and intel leakers. that's according to the tweet. last week, trump attorney general on his decision to recuse himself from the russian investigation. and he called the attorney general beleaguered in a tweet on monday. a new hoverboard recall to tell you about. i-rover isal about 2,800 of them. these were told at t.j. max and marshas stores nationwide. we are hearing from the parents of a 5-year-old boy who died while attending a day camp in georgia. they have an important message for all families. catie beck has this story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the cricket summer day camp is shut down following the tragic death of 5-year-old benjamin. his heartbroken parents and

investigators are trying to figure out what went so terribly wrong. this morning, a mother in agony. grieving the loss of her 5-year-old son, benjamin. the little boy, sent for a day of fun at camp. but never coming back. >> i miss him. i'm angry. and i want him back. >> reporter: benjamin and a dozen other 5-year-old campers were taken to a waterfall at the nature center for a according to the camp, the children, supervised by four counselors were allowed to splash around in a shallow creek. a camp spokesman says, when it was time to head back, the counselors noticed benjamin was missing. he was found water. >> it's not right. >> reporter: his parents say benjamin didn't know how to swim. but the camp schedule only listed water activities like fishing and water fights.

they didn't think it would be a problem. >> we never had a conversation about swimming. that's not on their itinerary they sent to us. i would never have agreed for him to do anything like that. >> reporter: monday, the camp was shut down after the state of georgia determined it did not follow proper licensing procedures. the family's lawyer is planning to file a lawsuit. >> you're going to pay for this one. >> reporter: the camp issued a statement, writing in part, they're heartbroken and distraught over this tragedy. adding thousands of children have attended the camp over the years without incident, except for minor scrapes, bumps and bruises. the family's attorney says that parents need to be cautious. >> any parent can pay the price if you don't know what's going on with a summer camp. >> reporter: the american camp association, suggests that parents should ask about the camp'saccreditation, and check with the better business bureau

i had a fear of swimming in the ocean. >> reporter: that fear was challenged after her younger brother, robby, sudden lly diedf a heart attack. pat's son asking her to join him for a local tribute swim in robby's honor. i said, that's so sweet. i wish i could do the same. he said, you could if you try. >> reporter: after that first swim, she was hooked. she started to distance swim in her spare time, training at a local pool, getting tips from high school kids. >> he was 16. hen and he says, you're swimming like you're doing the dog paddle. like that. >> reporter: it turned out this lovable matriarch was a machine in the water. three or four miles, crept up to six or seven. and by her 50s, pat was swimming ten miles straight without stopping. every year, her swims got more ambitio

ambitious. marathon swimmer. >> yes. >> reporter: why haven't you hired a coach? >> i don't have the money. everything is self-funded. >> tackle the ocean seven. intense long-distance swimming all around the world. >> i swam across catalina channel. that's 21 miles. i molokai channel in may. i got the record for the oldest woman. >> reporter: all under her belt. but pat dreamed of setting a record in the english channel, one of the most dangerous and challenging. your lung capacity must be amazing. >> yes. it is. don't ask me is. >> reporter: after trying last year, pat set out this june, to conquer the 21 miles between >> reporter: how do they eat in the water? >> they throw a bottle attached to the line. and i have quick lid carbs.

chris chrissy, good morning again. does this exceed your wildest dreams, for this show, this role, what this would mean for your life? >> absolutely. literally, i was going to quit acting and move back home. and now, my mom is going to be my emmy date. and it's really exciting. >> you talk about how before this role came about, you were empty in your bank account and had some change there. you go into for this audition on "this is us." did you feel like, i nailed it. >> no. i had a great preaudition. and when i got in the room, it was like, whatever it. >> the birds were birdier. the skies were bluer. and so, it was a bit of a musical experience. but when i got in the room, i was like, this is not what i planned. >> and what happened? did your agent -- >> luckily, they had me in for a couldback. thank god. there was something there.

and almost 45 minutes to an hour couldback. that never happens. this is a good sign. you never -- you could never -- luckily, we did test twice. and it was jumping through hoops. but, like, it feels good because you feel like you earned it and it was the right thing. >> when did you realize -- you're shooting a pilot. that's amazing to get that role. then this, is a breakout hit. i mean, it's the show everyone is talking about next year. i'm not saying that because we work here at nbc. and hoda said, you have to see this show, "this is us." when did you realize, this is something special? >> we knew at the table read when everyone got together and we read the script so many times. but it's still so emotional and everyone there was engaged. all of the executives were crying. this is amazing. when we're in the fourth or fifth episode and we start to see people really get into it. and then, i cry with strangers in bathrooms and random people

at different stores, i was like, this is impacting people. >> people are looking at the characters and feeling you. there's somebody who each of us connects to. when somebody does come up to you in the bathroom and says, oh, my gosh, what is the message? what are they saying that your show is teaching them? >> it's typically thank you so much for enlightening me. or i've never had a relationship with my daughter who has a weight issue. i never understood her. and thank you for doing that for us in the relationship. then, i'm in tears. >> you're crying, yeah. >> or anybody who is battling -- anybody who feels other in any capacity or feels inadequate. we are trying to get through this thing called life. you know? and we do it a little differently. >> speaking of, how has your life changed? i mean, since we talked about it, 81 cents in the bank account. and you moved into your own place. >> very grown up. >> that's a thing. that's amazing. >> i have my own washer and
